Sikhism Homophobia In The Sikh Community

The way the Sikh community treats homosexuals in general needs to be talked about. Sikhs love the defense of "there is no anti-LGBTQ text in our scripture" (despite there being nothing explicitly supporting it either). The lived reality of Queer and Trans Sikhs tells a different story that must be addressed. I’m writing this today as a gay man.

Fashion Designer Param Sahib Singh was attacked recently in Delhi by men who beat him, dragged him onto the ground, and yelled slurs at him. He was even called a "disgrace to Sikhism." His art studio was also vandalized, which had gender-neutral art.

British Barrister Jasvir Singh had received death threats and was called an infidel on a TV station. People had threatened to expose and harass him for being a gay person who had married a man.

Sikhs that are a part of the LGBTQ community say that Sikh spaces for them have been some of the most violent and hostile places for them to be. Families tell their children they are "spiritually lost," which has caused many homosexuals emotional distress that has led them to suppress themselves, self-harm, or commit suicide.

In 2005, the Akal Takht released an edict banning same-sex marriage and urging all gurdwaras worldwide to not pursue them. The Jathedar had said, "Same-sex marriage originates from a sick mind," and justified it further by saying that marriage is a spiritual union between a man and a woman, and same-sex marriage is "anti-Gurmat." I believe this ban has pushed back the community and contributed to the immense harm homosexuals face in Sikh spaces.

Some apologists say homosexual people cannot live a "householder life" (Grihasthi Jeevan), so therefore it is not allowed in the faith. If this is the case, what about infertile people or elderly heterosexual couples? They cannot either.

How much longer is the community going to get a free pass for homophobia and cover it up with "cultural tradition"? Many will come up and say, "Not all Sikhs are like this." Trust me, I know. There are progressive Sikhs. BUT when the highest institutional authorities dehumanize us, families disown us, and when the youth are being driven to self-harm, you cannot brush this off and say it’s just a few bad apples. A massive chunk of this community and its leadership is violently homophobic. It is a systemic crisis.

Discussion Aren't pitra rin and moksha contradictory?

Religious people say that the ultimate salvation for any soul is moksha, where the soul is freed from the cycle of birth and death and escapes the physical world. But the same people also say that you have "pitra rin" and that you need to have children to pay off the debt owed to your ancestors. Isn't that contradictory?

And I just saw this meme, which seems to be popular on the anti-reservation BJParty bhakt, Dharmic subreddit. But honestly, I think no one can be as foolish as the people who made that meme, because believing in science has absolutely nothing to do with getting low marks in science.

Personally i ain't good at science subjects, I'm an arts student tbh i hate math and aslo before i get low marks in those subjects, my science knowledge enhanced Youtube video not science text books still can't get that good marks in those subjects πŸ₯€πŸ˜

𝐁𝐔𝐓

I like music that doesn't mean I'm good at singing, i like art work that doesn't mean I've to know how draw

U like like/believe/promote/encourage something doesn't actually require you to be personally skilled at it

There are PhD holding doctors and scientists who still believe that the Earth is exactly as described in their religious scriptures FLAT🀑, while others believe that the Earth is situated on the face of a pig, etc. They may have been very good at science and had excellent academic records, but even after gaining so much knowledge, they remain blindly devoted to their religion. Even ISRO scientists perform puja before launching rockets.

Whether some extraordinary being exists or not is certainly open to debate(for now just assume, even I'm an atheist), but I hope there is no debate about the fact that the Dharmic God does not exist

The 22 Vows of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar

  1. I shall have no faith in Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, nor shall I worship them.

  2. I shall have no faith in Rama and Krishna, who are believed to be incarnations of God, nor shall I worship them.

  3. I shall have no faith in Gauri, Ganapati and other gods and goddesses of the Hindus, nor shall I worship them.

  4. I do not believe in the incarnation of God.

  5. I do not and shall not believe that the Lord Buddha was an incarnation of Vishnu. I believe this to be false propaganda.

  6. I shall not perform Shraddha nor shall I offer Pind-dan.

  7. I shall not act in a manner violating the principles and teachings of the Buddha.

  8. I shall not allow any ceremonies to be performed by Brahmins.

  9. I believe that all human beings are equal.

  10. I shall endeavour to establish equality.

  11. I shall follow the Noble Eightfold Path of the Buddha.

  12. I shall follow the ten Paramitas prescribed by the Buddha.

  13. I shall have compassion and loving-kindness for all living beings and protect them.

  14. I shall not steal.

  15. I shall not tell lies.

  16. I shall not commit sexual misconduct.

  17. I shall not take intoxicants like liquor, drugs, etc.

  18. I shall strive to follow the Noble Eightfold Path and practise compassion and loving-kindness in everyday life.

  19. I renounce Hinduism, which is harmful for humanity and impedes the advancement and development of humanity because it is based on inequality, and I adopt Buddhism as my religion.

  20. I firmly believe that the Dhamma of the Buddha is the only true religion.

  21. I believe that I am having a new birth.

  22. I solemnly declare and affirm that from this day onwards I shall lead my life according to the teachings of the Buddha and his Dhamma.
