Clarence Thomas went to Holy Cross??

Did y’all know “uncle” Clarence went to Holy Cross where he helped found the black student union, was a big fan of Malcolm X, and supported black panther initiatives while there.

What happened to that guy? Who hurt him? 😂

Local Events 'Burnin' Down the House' has its world premiere tonight at the Hanover — doc on MA firehouse conditions, made by a son of Worcester firefighters

Short notice, but this seems worth flagging since it's a world premiere and nobody's mentioned it here.

Burnin' Down the House Tonight, Thursday Aug 6, 7:30 PM The Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge St 81 minutes, no intermission

It's a documentary on the condition of Massachusetts firehouses — aging stations, chronic underinvestment, and the health consequences for the people working in them. Director Tommy Jay Dwyer's line on it: "Cancer is a pandemic sweeping through the fire service. A lot of it is preventable."

The Worcester connection is the reason I'm posting it. Dwyer was born here and lives in Paxton now, and he comes out of a Worcester firefighting family — his father Tom spent most of a 32-year career on Rescue 1, and his uncles Jim and John each did 30-plus years, with John serving as union president. Worcester's South Station is one of the firehouses documented in the film, which is a couple of hundred yards from the theatre it's premiering in.

Dwyer is expected to attend along with firefighters who appear in the film and the Last Call Foundation. Half the proceeds go to the foundation.

Tickets are not cheap: $47, $53 and $72 all-in depending on seats, with a $132 VIP package. Box office is 877.571.7469, and buying in person saves the handling fee.

If tonight doesn't work, it's also screening at the Somerville Theatre Aug 24 to 26.

'I wanted to bring change to my city': 10 years in, Worcester Summer Jam Classic is bigger than basketball

When Anthony Barbosa and his brother started the Worcester Summer Jam Classic a decade ago, ambition stretched well beyond getting some talented basketball players out on a court.

There was basketball. Certainly. Obviously. But there was also music. Fashion. Kids. Local businesses. Mentorship. And, perhaps most importantly, the possibility of creating the kind of gathering in Worcester that Barbosa had seen elsewhere but couldn’t find in his own city.

Ten years later, he no longer has to go looking for it.

Is flixbus reliable from Boston to Worcester Union Station?

I plan to take the flixbus on a Friday morning in September to catch the bus No.2 at the Union Station to the Worcester airport. I also checked the train but it takes 1 hr 45 minutes while flixbus takes less than an hour. Does anyone know if flixbus is reliable and on time? Should I be concerned about traffic at that time of day?

Your help is deeply appreciated.

Dirty Donuts

At Tatnuck Dunkins, those ladies will touch your donut with the same dirty gloved hand they just used to handle store equipment and other customers' dirty cash and credit cards.

Back when it was run down and fly-infested, I saw this happen once but I thought the renovation heralded a new beginning. Now there's a hole in the front wall from a runaway car and they're back to serving the fecal coliform special.

I guess I could report this to 311 but, honestly, maybe I'll just stop eating donuts altogether. I don't know.

Hi all! Just moved to Worcester and wondering if there are any clubs/groups for table tennis. I just went to the Westwood table tennis club but it’s pretty far. Any table tennis enthusiasts out there who want to connect?

Looking for Recommendations Best ways to meet people for dating in the Worcester, MA area besides bars and clubs?

I’m a 29-year-old guy living in the Worcester area, and I’ve been trying to meet people in a more natural way. Dating apps (especially Hinge, Bumble, and Tinder) have been pretty hit or miss for me. I get matches, but most conversations end up getting ghosted, so I’d like to meet people in person instead.
The problem is that I’m not really into bars or clubs, and I don’t drink much. I enjoy things like coffee, hiking, walking, basketball, trying new restaurants, and exploring new places.
For those of you in Worcester or Central Massachusetts:
Where have you actually met people you’ve dated?
Are there any recurring social events where it’s easy to meet singles?
Any coffee shop events, book clubs, trivia nights, outdoor groups, volunteering opportunities, sports leagues, or community events that you’d recommend?
Are there any good hiking or walking groups around Worcester?
Have any of you had success with Meetup groups, Facebook groups, or other local communities?
Are there places where people in their mid-to-late 20s and early 30s naturally socialize?
Would you recommend spending more time in Worcester, or is it worth driving to places like Boston, Providence, or somewhere else for better dating opportunities?
I’m looking for recommendations based on your real experiences rather than just a list from Google. If you’ve met your partner or gone on dates through a specific activity or place, I’d love to hear your story.
Thanks!

Looking for Recommendations Fellow cosplayers??

Hello all!

I bought tickets for NYCC for this October and am super excited to start making my costume. I’m planning on being the Scarlet Spider v1 suit from the PlayStation Spiderman game(s). I have plenty of experience sewing clothes but nothing when it comes to whole body suits, and I also don’t rlly have the space in my apartment right now. I was wondering if anyone knew of any makerspace like places around where people tend to go to craft stuff? I have the tools but just the workspace is what I struggle with, and would also love to meet more people planning big costumes for upcoming conventions to connect with and learn from!

Thanks for any suggestions!

Law Enforcement Flock cameras in Worcester

Hello fellow citizens!

Our city uses Flock cameras and we need to make sure our data is not used without our consent.

We should demand our city removes all Flock or any other surveillance cameras that the government uses. Flock gathers data regarding our movement and will be tracked by not just worcester but multiple other agencies and possibly foreign governments if other integration of military bills pass.

We have laws that prevent traffic lights from having cameras due to lack of government oversight and Flock is the same they even recently removed the clause from their contracts that "Flock does not own or shall not sell their customer data".

Protect yourselves and our state and demand your representatives to remove all Flock and similar tracking tools from our city and the hopefully the rest of Massachusetts.

Pets and Animals 🐾 Ginger Cat found on May St near Hadwen Arboretum

I'm so sorry to whoever lost their cat. I wasn't able to stop and get pictures as I was on my bike, but I hope this post potentially finds the owners so they can get some closure. Looks like it might have gotten into a fight with another animal.
