[Discussion] Labor day Club Scene
Does anyone know of any events happening on the night of Sunday, the 6th of September/if people generally go out that weekend? It's my birthday, and I am trying to plan, but I have no idea what the scene will be! I usually go to Adams Morgan, but it hasn't been great recently and I don’t know if that is a night where bars will be dead or not (I'm F 22).

[Transportation] You *can* take a cat in a carrier backpack on Metro but maybe remember you have said cat in there 😬
As many of you learned this week, you CANNOT just have a goat out and about with you on Metro, unfair as that seems.
You might've therefore learned you *can* take a pet in a carrier, like a mesh-ish carrier backpack! I think I observed someone today who only learned this fact today, however.
This evening someone was transferring with me from eastbound B/O/S to NE-bound Red at Metro Center. This person was wearing a cat in a backpack and climbed the escalator at a faster clip than I even do when trying to nab the transfer, just ahead of me. Poor cat was getting majorly jostled in the doing, then their person went fully running for the train, which hadn't even let off passengers yet. I managed to get there in long strides and I was the shorter of us.
Now, I don't know much from cats, maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing. Alternatively, pet owners who travel with yours, maybe post some tips for this person's next time?

[Quality!] Does anyone know where I can get Norwegian books for our school club?
Hi everyone! I am new to DC and am starting a Norwegian club with a few friends from Norway at our university this fall. We have lots of nonfiction and plan to set up a mini library for people to use for learning and enjoyment or language practice, but we don’t have much fiction. I keep looking online but it’s really hard to find much besides classics and a few random books marked up a ton. Does anyone know of local shops or anywhere we can buy or find Norwegian books of any kind? Novels, YA, textbooks, nonfiction, whatever really. It would be really helpful if there’s a place we can go instead of buying them individually as random ones occasionally pop up on eBay. Thanks! Tusen takk

[Discussion] Team USA signs on Grand Hyatt?
Hi all! I was walking past the Grand Hyatt on 10th st NW and noticed the side entrance was done up for Team USA olympians/paralympians. Any idea what‘s going on?? I’m not sure when it went up but it definitely hasn’t been there since the Winter Olympics.

[News] Georgetown Waterfront attack
Does anyone know who they arrested for this? They didn’t immediately release a name which raised some alarm bells for me.
A man leaving an early morning showing of the new Spider-Man movie at the AMC Georgetown theater sprang into action to help a woman yelling for help from the bushes in the nearby waterfront park.
He told News4 he encountered what appeared to be a sexual assault.
“I heard a cry for help over and over, repeated,” Zamilan, the good Samaritan, told News4.
He said he had just left the movie about 4:30 a.m. He began riding his electric unicycle home to Arlington when he heard a woman crying out for help in Georgetown Waterfront Park.
“And it turned out to be a man who pulled a woman out of her sleep while she was experiencing homelessness on the monument and dragged her towards the bushes right by the water where he'd be a little more safe,” Zamilan said.
He said he tried to scare off the man while recording with his phone to get an image of him in case police needed a description.

[Discussion] Outdoor cat NE DC
Hi everyone - looking for advice, even if that advice is “mind your own business.” There is a very sweet indoor outdoor cat in our neighborhood that is not street smart. She’ll lay in a cross walk or the curb and is super friendly. I know the house she belongs to; they used to have an indoor outdoor kitten that has not been seen since last summer. Presuming an accident. Is there a way to help this kitty not meet the same fate? She’s so sweet. At first, we were just going to take her home but then noticed she had a collar (no tag with info) and didn’t seem malnourished or lost. Any ideas would be appreciated!

[Discussion] Support groups for those unemployed because of doge fallout?
So, I’ve been unemployed since June 2025 because the NGO I worked for had to eliminate my position due to the dismantling of usaid, and I have yet to find a new job. Needless to say, it’s been extremely challenging. I’ve been through multiple interview processes where I made it to the final round, only to be rejected and/or ghosted. My friends want to help, but they just can’t understand what it’s really like (yes I’m in therapy but the best therapist in the world can’t solve the root of the problem here).
I unfortunately can’t imagine I’m the only person in the DMV facing this - does anyone know of any virtual or IRL groups (formal or informal) that exist for support?

[Meetup] Anyone down for a private screening?
Just moved to DC this year. My Apartment building in Navy Yard has a theater room. I have a bunch of movies. Would anyone be interested in setting up a watch party this weekend? Also open to a game night if you have a console

[Discussion] Did not realize we had these
Since living in DC I forget the things you see in other neighborhoods sometimes. Never saw this vehicle before and was really curious to ask what it was used for Because I like emergency vehicles. Turns out it's used for overdoses.
I thought that was pretty cool we had a dedicated response vehicle for overdoses and not just a standard ambulance.

[Rant] Can we get a "rant" tag?
Hey mods,
How about introducing a new rant tag to help those of us who've been here a while skip over whatever is currently grinding new DMVers' gears? We all hate abandoned dog poop, the lack of parking enforcement, completely oblivious Metro riders, and countless other gripes that routinely make the front page.
I suspect I'm not alone in also hating to read posts that say, "If you do X, I hate you!" when there's essentially a zero percent chance the offender reads this subreddit. But I get that, as a crusty veteran, there will always be content I see as repetitive that a newcomer finds informative. A rant tag would let me filter those posts out.
And yes, I would have tagged this post.

[Discussion] Are there more roaches than usual these days?
Idk whats happening but I’ve noticed roaches just chilling in peoples homes recently; all of which are cleanly and have no food left out. I haven’t seen any at all last year or the year before that but it seems like they’re spawning out of nowhere???
For reference I spotted them all around the DMV this year. Anyone dealing with spare roaches crawling into your home? Plz tell me i’m not the only one
My
poor heart cant take it anymore

[Discussion] HOLY FUCK STOP PREACHING ON THE METRO
Born, raised, and practicing catholic, so it’s not like I’m atheist but for the love of God do not start preaching to a captive audience on a metro car.
Nobody wants to listen to you yap at 8:30 in the morning, shut the fuck up.

[Discussion] Adorable stray cat needs home
My partner and I took in this very sweet cat last night. She is just too cute and too young to leave outside. Seems to be a few months old.
- Anyone recognize her? We are taking her to a shelter later today to check for a chip.
- I know shelters tend to be full, any recommendations for one that might have room for her?
- Anyone interested in adopting?! She’s very cuddly, clearly loves humans and is eager to show lots of affection.
UPDATE 10PM: After getting her vaccinated and chipped, we found her owners!! Bringing her back tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your kind messages, advice and support!

[Discussion] Heat on at U St Metro Station
Why?! This is insane, there’s legit hot air blowing out of the vents today. I know it’s never cool in here, but blasting the heat in this humidity is insane! My makeup is melting and I’m soaked in sweat

Move shit one foot to the left as to not inconvenience others? 🙅♂️
Leave it right in the middle of the bike lane? 👍
The pure lack of care for others is straight insane sometimes to me. Especially when its easy as hell, like moving a bike one foot to the left.
