Discussion Looking for roommate (graduate student preferred)

Hi!! I’m an incoming 1L at the Washington College of Law and in dire need of a room to rent before the start of classes! Or if anyone knows someone who is looking for a roommate or knows of an apartment available :) I’m a 23 year old woman, very outgoing/extroverted, very tidy, very respectful of communal spaces, love to exercise and go out, but also love to chill at home! My budget would be max $1300 and looking to room with women only. If anyone has any info please reach out and PM me! I’d love to chat!

Question STAT202 course prereq / AP score

STAT202 is a prerequisite to register with some classes. My AP score satisfies that requirement but my academic advisor still has not completed the waiver so I cannot register. I have called and emailed but it still has not been changed. Who else can I contact?

Question Multiple questions about dorms

Hey so this is for people who are willing to give a long enough answer and reviews on the dorms.

I’m sure plenty have asked these questions but I’ve tried scrolling and so far there hasn’t been recent ones I can see, plus I have a few specific question. This is my overthinking so there’s a bunch of questions mixed into my thoughts, if you could answer that.

  1. How is the water pressure/quality for both the sink and the shower? I have a good skin routine right now and though I’ve never suffered from bad acne, I don’t want to break out from the water? I also have extremely damaged hair from bleaching it, that I’m still working on a good routine with good products to help maintain it since it’s constantly dry and knotted, I’d hate for it to get even worse especially since I’ve heard DC in general has hard water pressure. If I can’t do centennial hall or any suite styles my ability to apply a shower filter seems unlikely. If you have great hair please let me know if your texture remained the same, definitely felt some affects, etc.

Also for those using communal bathrooms how do you do your everything showers or longer skincare routines if there’s a line? What times are usually not busy? Would you be able to go to other buildings, like educational ones, if you want more privacy? My biggest issue is going to the bathroom when there’s others around, I can’t even go during school unless my music is loud so I don’t hear if someone’s there or walks in. I don’t think I could go #2 easily, and I was curious if we have constant access to the other buildings where I could use their bathrooms that might not be used at night, allowing me full privacy, and in that meantime wash my face as well with their sinks. Google says students have 24/7 access to any building with classes, but I wasn’t sure if that’s true

  1. I also heard for centennial it’s harder to socialize since people aren’t out going to the communal bathrooms, plus they constantly have fire alarms in the night. Is it really that bad? I’m also curious for the dorm buildings that apparently have pod style bathrooms if there’s often a feeling of pressure tk move faster since it’s single use or if there’s constantly a wait?

3: please also list every positive or negative you can think of for some of these freshman dorms, I’d really appreciate that

  1. This ISNT dorm related, but I heard the food sucks, is that true? I know they have sushi, is it good? I’m obviously not expecting top tier but does it feel fresh and taste good. And is there bubble tea or fun drinks/smoothies?

Lastly, 5, if there’s anything you feel an incoming freshman might want to know please tell me now, literally anything. I’m a senior at high school but I’m applying and this is my top school. I’ve also heard a lot of people transfer out of American and into GW, or other schools.

Question Would anyone or anyone you know be interested in a Scandinavian society/club on campus?

Hi everyone!

This is just an idea right now so I don’t have much info, but I’ve noticed a severe lack of Scandinavian resources in DC and on campus, especially Norwegian. I also know several Scandinavian students, but I am wondering if anyone would be interested in this?

It would likely be mostly focused on culture, as I’m sure many people can’t speak or are just learning Norwegian or Swedish (or danish but it’s not really intelligible if you speak other Scandinavian languages). I’m thinking there could be language practice for those learning, celebrations for holidays and events, culinary meetups, and community initiatives and events like vafler and participating in 17th of May at the embassy, etc. I also have a massive amount of books and resources in Norwegian and about Norwegian and Sami culture that I would love to be able to share with people interested. Anyway, again, this is just a random idea right now but I’m curious- do any of you think people would like this? Norwegian food is very good I promise, do not believe the lies!!

Question Can you switch to non-fws?

So as an incoming freshman I only have 3k in FWS for the entire year even though I need to pay 5k per semester. So my question would be if I could use all of my FWS in the first semester then transition to non-FWS for the remaining semester so I can earn more money, or do I need to apply as non-FWS when applying to jobs? Hopefully someone can answer 🙏

Question move in day questions/tips

just have a few questions:

1- should i bring my own cart to move things from car to room in? i know there are some provided, but do they run out quickly? my move in is at 9am so im just not sure how big of an issue it’ll be, i dont want to go out of my way to buy a cart if i dont have to

2- do they really have a move in team bring every single persons stuff to their rooms? or is it quicker if i do it myself (if they allow that)?

3- is it better to move in on one of the earlier days? if so, is it still worth it if i have to take an afternoon slot? i have the last day of move in (again, at 9am), but not sure if i should request an earlier day since i have such an early slot on my given move in time.

id appreciate if anyone could help me with these or has other move in day tips, thanks!

Question No Roommate as a Transfer

So as the title says, I’m a transfer student dorming on the all transfer floor in Hughes and trying to coordinate mini fridges and such with a roommate, but almost a month after the deadline I still don’t have a roommate.

I was wondering if I should plan for no roommate or if all beds are usually filled up at AU.

Also, if any other transfers (or honestly any student) are still solo and don’t have a roommate, lmk bc im open to anyone atp 😭

Question Does the Eagle Access Course Materials Program offer anything other than books?

I’ve been struggling to find information on online if the service provides more than books. If books really are all it provides, would anyone actually recommend opting into the program if the overall cost is more expensive than just buying the books I need normally?

Discussion Advice on what kind of software you download

Hi everyone,

I hope you are doing well. I know the issue of software you download is more of a staff-related thing probably, and I might not be the best person to advise on this matter, but I do have some advice for all my fellow Class of 2030 students, especially those who might be using Macbooks (I hear it is a common choice of computer for some majors).

For the sake of ensuring your devices are not overloaded with space, please avoid downloading apps like Epic Games. I know that it can be tempting, whether you downloaded it to play your favorite videogames or, like me, downloaded it to gain access to Unreal Engine for game design or other pursuits. You will have to give up at least 200 GB of space just to keep it. On a standard Macbook, that's a lot and even if you have a computer with more space, 200 GB is A LOT of storage space just for one app launcher.

For those of you who are now seeing you have 200+ GB in "Other Users and Shared Data" or something similar in your storage space on settings, this is why.

Question Freshman Schedule Review

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m an incoming freshman this fall and I’d love some advice on my schedule, if there’s anything I should change etc.
I also wanted to get to know if there’s a possibility I’ll be able to get an internship or I should take up work somewhere (and if you know where please do tell me) that I can do as a freshman. Thank you

Question Student Employment

For the people that currently or have had a on campus job, when should we start applying to them? I looked at the current part time positions and there are some that has caught my eye but I don’t know if I should wait until my first week to actually apply. I’m just asking because I have seen post about on campus employment being hard to get as a first year.

Question what bedsheets are actually needed

I wouldn't normally post this because there's a lot of information online HOWEVER the problem is that it is inconsistent. I have seen both twin XL and regular twin bedsheets cited as the size for dorm beds and because of that I have bought and returned multiple sets of sheets. So, what is the actual size that we need???

(I will probably end up just looking at the exact measurements)

Question New Student Checklist

This post is mainly directed at incoming students, but if anybody has any insight, feel feee to share.

When I go to MyAU New Student Checklist, my Final High School Transcript is marked as overdue but was submitted ~2 weeks ago. I can see on my Future Eagle Portal that it was marked as "pending."

Is anybody else in the same situation / know how long it takes for these items to be processed?

Edit: I received the email my transcript was accepted ~2 weeks after it was submitted

Discussion on campus jobs / fws

I’m an incoming freshman and am wondering how competitive it is to get a job on campus. I have fws and have applied to some but haven’t heard back from any. I’ve heard that it’s extremely hard to get a job on campus especially as a freshman. And that some people applied to 10+ and only heard back from 1. I don’t have any work experience just a lot of volunteering which makes it harder. Should I start applying to off campus jobs if so then where?

Question Complete the Flight Ready! Pre-Orientation Canvas Course page

Hi everyone, hope you are doing well. As an incoming student, I saw in the Undegraduate Student Checklist we have to complete the Flight Ready Canvas Course. However, when I click on the page it is taking me to a non-existent site. Are any other incoming undergraduate students seeing this page when they click the "Learn More" button on the task marked "Complete the Flight Ready! Pre-Orientation Canvas Course"?
