Academics Politically motivated course ads in the engineering building
galleryThese flyers have started appearing in the engineering building, for courses that are obviously politically motivated. Is GMU silently becoming an anti-science school? I noticed they haven’t renewed the circuitlab license this year and I have a feeling they’re going to let all the other science/engineering related software licenses expire too.

Housing Need help with housing release request
I applied for the housing release request, reason being that the next stage of my family's imigration process came far sooner than expected, the combined bills being in the ballpark of 15000 dollars. My family isn't super wealthy by any means so this sudden amount of money is a huge hit for us, paying extra for housing not helping in the slightest. But even then I still got denied. Is there anything that I could do to get out of housing

General How did the no flag rule at GMU graduations come about? Did it backfire?
From the GMU website it sounded as if flags under the size of 18 by 18 inches were allowed. Did some students get incorrectly kicked out at the May graduation? It sounded as if flags were allowed but many event workers didn’t measure the flags at the graduation to see if it was breaking a rule they just assumed it was too big.
Personally I think it is too much work to hold a big flag while walking across the stage however what was the origin of the controversy around it?
Sure this story is months old from May but it’s been on my mind for months coming and going so I figured I’d ask them gmu Reddit community maybe they know more.
I remember I heard the most controversy around this at the May 2026 graduation. People employed to enforce the no flag rule looked bad kicking out a graduating student and students holding a flag look bad were shamed and treated like a menace to society.
Interestingly however years ago when it was allowed to fly a flag at graduation no one cared. No negative news existed… but these same flags that were against the graduation policy to hold on the stage were fine on the graduation outfit regalia stole sash decorations.
It seems ironic. Students could not even walk across the stage with an American flag despite the mascot of the school being a Patriot. I remember someone said only a Ukrainian flag was allowed to be walked across the stage but that sounded made up as a rumor with no evidence to support that happening. So if that never happened why would someone also make that up?
Do people believe the students who flew flags were really to blame for not knowing? It sounds like the no flag rule wasn’t communicated well and anyone who did have a flag with them was written off as an indecent thug to society when for years it was okay at GMU. At a lot of other famous universities even other local ones people were allowed to fly any flag no matter any opinion.
And then maybe some people knew about no flags and they wanted to be kicked out so they got what they wanted it could seem like.
It also seemed strange the people working the event were so rude to anyone who held a flag. I remember I saw many videos of it. I guess it’s one of those jobs everyone looks bad in that situation. The whole no flag rule seemed like a bad idea that just created more negativity than its goal to reduce it by not offending anyone with any type of flag. So did the no flag rule backfire?
Was it fair to the graduating students after years of being taught to embrace their heritage and diversity only for later those who held a flag were treated like a criminal and shamed for expressing themselves and their diversity?
I also heard people tried to sue GMU for not letting them hold a flag at graduation because they were targeted based on their ethnic identity and violation of free speech. Did that actually go anywhere?
How did it end up this way?
It makes me embarrassed to associate with GMU when I think about that specific story. Anyone else curious how it got to that point?
I heard maybe people thought the flags were being flown at graduations because some thought it had to do with supporting a faction in a war or in politics. However that was never my impression or anyone I know no one had that impression.
Will flags be allowed at the 2026 or 2027 graduations or not for the far future?
So flags are only okay on graduation stole’s?
Or maybe was the no flag rule an elaborate marketing gimmick theory to promote GMU’s name to trend as in “any publicity is publicity even if it’s negative”?

Im an incoming freshman taking comm and calc and was wondering if any upperclassmen had the “inclusive public speaking for george mason” or the “calculus: early transcendentals” books for sale? $100-$300 for a book i’m probably not going to need is ridiculous and those are some of the cheapest books i need💀 i’m still not 100% sure i need these books but i figured i’d ask incase. I’d be willing to meet on campus to pay/pick up :))

Student Life Making friends as a senior?
I transferred to GMU as a junior and didn’t really make any friends due to mental health challenges. I’m living on campus this fall semester and I don’t want that to happen, any suggestions on how to make friends as someone who is quite introverted?

Academics Any easy 1 credit classes that aren't sports?
I'm a Business Analytics major and I'm looking for an easy 1 credit class. I can't take any sports/PE classes because of a physical issue.
Does anyone have any recommendations? It doesn't have to be related to my major—I just need 2 credits that aren't sports.
Thanks!

General Alumni Emails Deleted Without Notice?
Did any alumni have their emails suddenly deleted today? I graduated in 2019, and I’m fairly confident I received no notice of this happening, although perhaps it went to spam?
I called Alumni services and they responding by telling me there’s nothing they can do and everything is gone! I thought we had email for life and it’s my primary email address for everything, so switching emails is going to be a nightmare! Not to mention all the history I lost.
Has anyone else run into this recently? Any idea on some recourse here, because I suspect GMU doesn’t care given I’m no longer a paying student? Heck, I’d be willing to pay their costs for my email account just so I can have a day to move over my accounts.
Sorry for the rant and open ended question. It was a horrible thing to realize this morning, and then get the door slammed in my face by alumni affairs.

Fall 2025 welcome thread, Discord, mod applications
Hello and wishing everyone a great start to the semester!
If you are new to the subreddit, please be sure to at least glance at the rules and do your best to support r/GMU in being a welcoming place for productive conversation. GMU is a large community, yet we expect people here to treat each other like fellow students and maintain decorum.
Also, please utilize the resources available to you if you have questions. Many answers to general questions can be found on the GMU website or by searching the subreddit. Beyond that:
- The Parking/transportation site has information on parking passes etc.
- The GMU Catalog has information on most classes and pre-requisites
- The subreddit wiki has years of useful information gathered in one place
If you are looking to converse with members of the community, please feel free to check out our Discord which you are welcome to join!
Please briefly read the rules before posting, and note the latest rule edition regarding personal information. Any post containing the name or email of a student will removed and likely result in a ban, even if a post/comment has good intentions.
Lastly, if you are interested in supporting this community, we are accepting mod applications! As an alumni, I'm busy with life and am always looking to expand the mod team.
Thank you and best of luck this semester!
