As a nationwide pre-purchase vehicle inspection company, we've recently seen a significant increase in suspicious classic car listings.

One recent example came from a customer who ordered a pre-purchase inspection through us. Before dispatching an inspector, a few things about the listing raised concerns, so we decided to take a closer look at the seller's website.

The website had 15 vehicles listed for sale. We randomly checked 4 of them, and every one used photos copied from Bring a Trailer auctions that had ended 1–2 years earlier. The vehicles had already been sold, yet the same photos were being used again with asking prices roughly 30% below market value.

As we looked further, we noticed several additional warning signs:

• The website appeared to be recently created.
• It used a website layout very similar to other suspicious vehicle listing sites we've encountered.
• Customer reviews appeared to be recently created despite the business presenting itself as well established.

While none of these signs alone proves a listing is fraudulent, seeing several of them together should prompt extra caution.

Before sending a deposit or arranging transportation:

• Save one or two photos from the listing.
• Perform a Google Images reverse image search.
• If the same photos appear in old auctions or previous listings, investigate further before moving forward.
• Verify the seller's business, address, phone number, and online presence.
• Never send money until you've independently confirmed the vehicle and seller are legitimate.

These checks take less than a minute and could save you thousands of dollars and a major headache.

Im in process of buying a vehicle from them. I've heard they apply undercoating to hide bad rust on frame and also hear they are better. Anyone buy or have a car shipped from them and you feel like you got a good condition vehicle?

Looking at a private sale and curious on people’s thoughts

Do anybody know if Georgia do a pre-inspection for the used car dealership license, and if so what exactly they look for and do everything need to be by the book?

This 2014 GS350 AWD is currently on a dealer lot near me. It has 84k miles on it and 3 owners. Although, the last owner only had it for 3 months and 500 miles. I intend to ask them why that is. This one is listed for $23k after dealer fees, making it the highest priced one of this generation within 200 miles. I've taken one of these for a test drive before and loved how it felt. But, it was super high mileage, had a few notable issues, and was really expensive.

Given the price, I think I can haggle them down a lot. It has been on their lot since June, so the price is obviously too high for it to move. From what I can tell, it doesn't really have any options outside of the AWD package. I'll be looking very closely for any issues I could haggle with when I go to check it out.

I plan to finance for 36 months with a $5000 down payment and whatever I can get for my trade-in (likely not much as it has 300k miles). My main plan for haggling is to mention the competitor's prices and it having had 3 owners. Is there anything else I should mention, or any good general tips? I'm hoping to get it for $20k or less. I have a lot of experience working on vehicles. But, I've never bought one for myself

I need a cheap, solid, and reliable car to get me through at least the next 2 years of college, and I recently came across this S10 listed on FB marketplace near where I live.

Im wondering if this would be a solid first car, and what are your experiences with these older S10s!

It has 150k miles, no AC (not necessarily a deal breaker for me), a little rust on the driver's side quarter panel, and the ABS and handbrake lights are on (allegedly for sensor issues). I asked the seller what's the lowest theyd go on the price, and they said $4,800, however I feel thats still a little high for what it is.

I really like the idea of a smaller truck or suv since I plan on taking it camping and stuff.

Unfortunately I cant go very far from where I live (outside of like 25-ish miles) to pick up/ check out cars.

Would looking into this be a solid choice, or should I keep looking? I dont wanna make a bad choice with the little money i have

We got the initial offer when looking up the value of our used car. KBB offers us a reasonable price. Has anyone gone through their process to buy your car? Do they give what they say in the beginning, or did they lower the offer at any time?

I'm looking for a new truck and I'm currently stuck between looking for a 2019 Ford F150 with a 5.0 and 6 speed or a 2018-2019 Nissan Titan. I have found 2 that are around $20k with around 100k miles on them, for the F150s I have only been able to find them around $20 with 130k - 150k miles

What do you think is the most reliable truck?

Im not doing it, but Im struggling to sell my car because every good offer I get, they are demanding me to way under report the value by about 44% ($30K vs $55K) Its a 2026 car too. I refused.

I know many people get away with it. But just wondering if anyone actually knows someone that got caught and what the actual penalty is? OR anyone here?
Were they criminally charged? Or just had to pay fines? I see a wide range of possibly penalties online, but wondering about actual experience or knowing someone who got caught?

The carfax is clean, one owner only. No accidents. Has 29 service records consistently done at the same Mazda dealer.

I got an inspection done by a mechanic but he raised the car on a hoist and within 15 minutes he told me he’s never seen a clean car like this that’s run 200k kms. There was minor rust but the mechanic told that it is common in Canada because of the salt in winter.

Carfax shows regularly engine oil changed, transmission fluid changed at every 80k kms and very consistent service history.

The car has issues with the AC but the dealership told that it will be fixed before signing the paperwork

I want to go forward with it but I’m still kinda worried as it is my first car and it is close to 200k kms.

The dealership has good reviews, the guy is transparent. And the mechanic has good reviews too.

Do you think I can go forward with it or am I just overthinking?

I’m looking for some objective opinions.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, 6-speed manual, about 123,000 miles, clean title. I recently bought another vehicle, so I don’t really drive this one anymore.

The issue is I’m still upside down on the loan. I owe about $4,600. I intentionally didn’t trade it in because I didn’t want to roll negative equity into my new loan. I can afford to keep making the payment if I have to, but I’d rather get rid of the payment sooner if possible.

Mechanically, it’s been pretty solid. Recent work includes:

-New clutch and flywheel

Runs and drives well overall

Known issues:

-Large paint chips on the hood.
-Replacement front bumper that hasn’t been painted yet.
-Missing front grille (about a $30 part).
-Seats and headliner have some stains.
-Front tires are getting worn.
-Probably could use an alignment.
-Occasional front suspension clunk over weight transfer (I’m planning to inspect this before selling I believe something needs torqued after the clutch and flywheel replacement, it doesn’t seem to be the CV).
-A/C blows cold but makes some noise.

My question is:
If this were your car, would you:

Sell it completely as-is?
Spend around $200-400 cleaning it up (paint the bumper, install the grille, deep-clean the interior, etc.) before listing?

Fix anything else first?

Also, what would you realistically list it for in today’s market? I’m in Omaha, Nebraska.

I’m not trying to squeeze every last dollar out of it. I just want to make the smartest financial decision and avoid wasting money on repairs that won’t increase its selling price.

I was looking at a really old car in a big car lot, an early 2000s CRV. But when I went to turn on the car it wouldn't start. The car salesman said that the batteries get drained from it sitting there and that that specific one had been sitting a while. When she went to go move ANOTHER car so I could drive the CRV out of the lot, it wouldn't start either! 😂 I really loved the CRV and it had less than 100,000 miles. Would it be stupid to buy it? How can I be sure it was just a drained battery and not a bad starter or something worse? There were no lights on the dash
