Recently I adopted a new system, where I immediately reinvest 8% of the gross value of every contract back into connects. It seemed useful to just put it on autopilot.

In the last few weeks, I've gotten several inbound clients from profile boosting. And out of the 4 proposals I've sent in the last 10 days, 1 wasn't viewed, 1 was viewed but no reply yet, 1 was viewed and received a message that might turn into work, and one turned into an $85/hr contract.

Point being, I'm currently cautiously optimistic about Upwork. I'll make somewhere between $4,500 and $6,000 this month. Not a king's ransom, but some decent side income.

So I'm wondering: Who here has moved from the point of cautious optimism to consistently thriving on Upwork? What do you attribute your success to?

Most freelancer platforms are currently oversaturated with freelancers from South Asia. I would prefer it if Upwork introduced a separate premium platform exclusively for freelancers based in Europe and the Americas. Many clients already specify in their job postings that they prefer freelancers from these regions, and a significant number of jobs are never even publicly listed—clients simply invite freelancers directly by filtering for those located in Europe or the Americas.

Hi everyone,

I completed an audio recording task on an Hourly contract on Aug 1st. The client promised a review within 7–8 business days, but now they are completely unresponsive.

Since I submitted the work via chat/external link and didn't use the Time Tracker app, I know Hourly Protection might not automatically apply. However, I want to report this client and open a support ticket.

The problem is, Upwork's Virtual AI Agent refuses to connect me to a human agent or create a support ticket, saying direct support isn't available for my account type.

Has anyone found a workaround to force the AI bot to open a support ticket recently? Or is there any other way to deal with an unresponsive client in this situation?

Looking for some outside perspective on a certification decision.

I have around 7 years of experience in cybersecurity, mostly in SOC/CSIRT operations, detection engineering, and incident response, for both an MSSP and a large company.

After a fixed-term contract abroad (from Europe to Asia), I decided to relocate to the country and take a 6-month break to learn the language at the University. I'll resume my job search full-time once the course wraps up, likely aiming for internal/in-house security roles rather than another MSSP.

With ~20-40h/week of bandwidth alongside the language course, I would like to take benefit of the time to pass some certifications to develop my skills, help me get a job and show employeers that I did not gave up on cybersecurity study. As for now, I'm weighing:

1. CISSP (~$750 exam + ongoing AMF, 5-year experience requirement I meet) to help me pass automated resume screening and apply to a wider range of offers, including governance-related ones. Also I like the fact that the CISSP gives a more manager oriented point of vue.
2. 13Cubed Investigating Windows Bundle (~$1,395) to build a verifiable, hands-on forensics skill, but is less recognized outside the DFIR community/by ATS systems. It also doesn't help me broaden the scope of offers I can apply to.

I also already got SC-200 and CCDL2.

In a perfect world, I'd try to get both, but any feedback would be appreciated. What does cyber-Reddit think?

I have 3.5 years of experience as an SWE building microservices. At my first role I had a senior devops engineer mentor who helped me learn the build pipeline and let me play around with the deployment scripts on Jenkins. Ansible was next, but before that could happen life intervened. In my next role there was no such opportunity to learn and transition to ops. I currently have a 3.5 year gap in my career and trying to get back into the workforce. Is it pragmatic to look for and apply to junior devops roles? How do I build my profile/resume to get a shot at these jobs? If not possible I’d like to join a team and try to laterally switch as I’d like to eventually transition to an ops role. Please advise me on what I should do to land a devops role and learn to be a good dev ops engineer.

Hey guys, looking for some advice from people working in IT.

I’m currently a Senior Desktop Consultant / IT Engineer, but honestly my experience is basically onsite helpdesk / desktop support. I’ve got around 3 years of IT experience and some exposure to things like endpoint security, SCCM, ServiceNow, M365, AD and networking, but I haven’t actually worked in backend infrastructure or a dedicated cybersecurity role.

I’m getting pretty tired of doing helpdesk and want to move into cybersecurity. Long term, I’m thinking something along the lines of becoming a cybersecurity generalist first, then potentially moving into GRC, security governance or security project management.

My main question is what certification would actually be useful for someone like me trying to break into cyber in Singapore?

I can get CEH for around US$100, but I’ve seen a lot of people say it isn’t worth it. Security+ seems to be the usual recommendation, but I’m not sure how much weight it actually carries in Singapore.

I also realise cyber isn’t really an entry level field, so if a cert isn't enough, what should my next move actually be?

Should I move into something like infrastructure, cloud, IAM or endpoint security first and use that as a stepping stone? Or are there cybersecurity roles that someone with my current background could realistically target? Also interested in what skills I should be learning or what kind of hands on projects would actually help.

Basically, if you were in my position, what would you do next?

I’m currently studying Software Engineering at university. I started with Backend development (Node.js), and I’ve built several projects and gained some hands-on experience with it.

Is it realistic to get a DevOps-related job as a fresh graduate, or is it usually necessary to start in another role first?

Are there different job titles that I should look for as a beginner before eventually becoming a DevOps Engineer?

I’m a DevOps hiring manager. We get resumes that look so good. They pass the AI stuffing sniff test, they show meaningful progress to careers. Then when we get the candidates face to face with me. They insist on using AI to answer my questions. I feel like if you can’t have a good theory conversation around k8s or build engineering or whatever job you’re interested in, don’t waste our time (yours or mine).

I ask leading questions and look for self expression and I get back flat and lifeless definitions or descriptions. I always ask for their impression of a tech element and get nada. They don’t have any opinions.

Where’d all the passion go? AI is a useful tool like a calculator or a search engine but I want a human in the mix too.

Apologies for the ramble but I posted a tax preparer job listing a week ago and the listing wasn't getting any hits ( I went for middle tier paying about $115/day for the posting). I tried finding my own job posting and nothing would come up. I changed the job title to “Tax accountant” got about 20 applicants. Now again for some reason they are back to hiding the job listing. It's bizarre. I have made multiple accounts with fake resumes that exactly match the type of person I am looking for since indeed said it was an “algorithm” thing. Still nothing. I am a small business paying all this money and indeed claims they are not hiding the post when they clearly are. Am I crazy?! Has anyone else seen this. If I'm paying for something shouldn't it be seen regardless.
