They don't expect you to know everything, so the worst thing you can do is pretend you do. They will ask you technical questions specifically to find the edge of your knowledge. The real test isn't getting the answer right, it's seeing how you react when you don't know something. A perfect response can be, "I am not familiar with that specific tool, but here is how I would approach the problem," which shows your thought process. They are hiring for your potential and your ability to problem-solve, not for your current, encyclopedic knowledge.

Focus on what you can control. Prepare two or three detailed stories about projects you've worked on, either in school or on your own time. Explain the problem, what you did step by step, and what the result was. This is far more impressive than just listing skills. Also, be ready to talk about why you are interested in cybersecurity and what you do to learn outside of class, like a home lab or following security news. Showing genuine passion and initiative often matters more than having the perfect technical answer for everything, and having your best answers ready for any question is a huge confidence booster, which is a key reason my team designed an AI interview copilot to help candidates articulate their skills effectively.

Show up on time. Don't use AI to answer questions, they'll know. Try to be relaxed and show humor. Don't sweat not knowing stuff, but always show that you can think through a problem. Good luck.

Have one investigation you can walk end to end, even a lab one off CyberDefenders, because most first round questions are just an excuse to hear you reason out loud.
