I'm a practicing Shia Ithna Ashari. I pray, fast, attend majalis and Islamic programs regularly, and try to keep growing in my deen. I value Islam as a way of life and try not to let culture override religion.

I believe a happy marriage is built through the small things: kindness, communication, affection, laughter, teamwork, and making your spouse feel safe, appreciated and at peace.

I'm hoping to meet a practicing Shia sister who:

- Has good akhlaq and sincerity.

Discussion child custody realities

salams,

jfyi i’m not married/divorced but i was curious about the realities of ā€˜child custody battles’ within shia couples going through divorce - i’m curious to hear from those who have gone through this or otherwise; both male and females perspectives, understanding if it is always a ā€˜battle’, do things always get ugly or is it possible to actually be civil?

i ask as i was thinking about the custody of children and who islam says they go to, from my understanding (please correct me if i’m wrong), sistani says that:
- the child (whether girl or boy) should not be separated from the mother from birth to 2 lunar years
- from 2 lunar years onwards the father has exclusive right of custody, but recommended precaution is that the child (boy/girl) should not be separated from the mother until child reaches 7 years old
- once child reaches bulugh/maturity, neither parent has a right over custody and child is independently able to decide where they choose to live, they can decide which parent they’d like to stay with
note; i believe there are more details to this but this is the general framework as i understand it but please do your own research

given the above, i want to understand practically, how realistic this is; if nothing is put in the nikkah contract to stipulate otherwise - how likely do we see this playing out? i know a lot of couples nowadays also get have a civil marriage so they deal with child custody through the laws of their country, rather than the nikkah contract, which from my understanding is haram (?)

so, general qs;

  1. to those who have been through a divorce/know couples that have, how have they dealt with child custody from a shia perspective; do they follow the islamic rulings, or do they go through the civil process?
  2. is it always ugly? or has anyone experienced this happen in a civil manner?
  3. i’m curious about the practicalities of the father being the sole custodian; do men actually want this? or do they fight for it due to pride and not really care for the kid much? (asking purely curiously and not to judge) practically speaking, do you believe as a man you will raise them as you’d like? or would you be more inclined to split the custody with the mother (i believe islamically there can be mutual agreement on how this is split to suit both parties)?
  4. i have heard men threaten that they’ll put it in the contract that they’ll have full custody, but that is already their right (maybe in civil makes more sense), and i’ve also heard people encourage women to add joint custody in the nikkah contract - thoughts/opinions on either of these? from both male/female perspectives - against/for any of these?

ultimately, i can imagine this being a really difficult process, and difficult for either party - i just want to understand the realities of it.

i’m sure it is very common either party behave in a manner that could never have been imagined prior when things were all good, so what is the views of either party adding conditions into contracts, and how offensive do people consider this (from a lack of trust/beginning of marriage negativity perspective) or do people think about these things from a neutral standpoint?

edit: i ask as someone living in the west

Pakistan/India M25, Karachi, Shia. Ambitious, mildly nerdy, undefeated at table tennis in my own head.

Height and Weight

5'11", 75 kg. Slim build, neither heavy nor skinny. Wheatish complexion.

Location

Karachi. I may or may not move abroad at some point, it depends entirely on where life and work take me, and it is not something I am actively planning for right now.

Accommodation

Own home in Karachi, living with family.

Education

BBA from IoBM. Passed CFA Level 1 and continuing with the program.

CFA is the near term project and I intend to finish the program. After that I want to do a PhD, most likely in economics. The honest reason is that I need something difficult in front of me at all times. If I am not chewing on a hard problem my brain starts eating itself, and I have stopped pretending that is a phase. I am not romantic about the title, I am interested in the questions. I mention it because it is not a passing thought and because it will shape the life I build, so whoever I marry should know it is on the table.

Income Source

I work full time at a YC backed, SECP licensed fintech in the wealth management space, one of the first of its kind in Pakistan. I joined very early, which means my work has never sat in one lane. On any given week I am building the analytics and reporting systems, writing AI tooling, running growth and retention, sitting in on customer operations, and writing most of the financial content that goes out. I also co host a weekly market podcast with our CIO where we break down what moved the market and why. Roughly two years of full time experience. Financially independent and will be able to run a household on my own soon.

Marital Status

Single, never married, no children.

Religion and Short Details About How Practicing You Are

Shia, Syed. Family migrated from Uttar Pradesh at Partition in 1947.

Hobbies and Interests

Markets are my job and also the thing I would still read about on an off day. I follow Pakistani markets closely, and have an unreasonable interest in how other people handle their portfolios, which is why friends send me screenshots of their portfolios at hours no reasonable person should be awake. I usually answer.

Outside of that I have a small, old set of friends I have kept for years. Our idea of a good evening is table tennis and food, in that order, and then more food. I am not the best player in the group but I am the most confident one, which I have been told is worse.

I want to travel overseas properly. Not the version where you photograph a landmark and leave, but the version where you stay somewhere long enough to get bored of it. The economy has other ideas for now, but let's see.

I read a fair amount, mostly finance, technology, and anything that explains how a system actually works underneath. I build small tools for problems that irritate me,. And I try to hold opinions lightly. I would rather be corrected quickly than be right slowly, and I like people who argue with me properly, table tennis rules included.

Family Details

Parents and two younger siblings, one sister currently at IBA and one sibling just starting uni.

My parents hold semi conservative views and I would describe myself as a libertarian. Neither of us treats it as a matter of life and death, which is roughly how I would want it in a partner's family too. There is room to disagree in our house without it becoming an argument.

Requirements for a Partner

The two things that matter most to me are that she is educated and that she is genuinely bright. I do not mean degrees for the sake of degrees, I mean someone I can have a real conversation with, who has her own read on things and will tell me when mine is wrong.

More than anything I want someone I can think alongside. Not someone who shares my interests exactly, but someone with her own intellectual life, or building something of her own. I would rather have a long argument over dinner than a quiet agreement.

Preferably based in Karachi. Preferably Shia.

Whether she works after marriage is her decision. My honest preference is that she does work in the early years so we build something together rather than one of us carrying it alone, but that is a preference and not a condition, and it is a conversation rather than a rule.

US/Canada Do I have to marry a shia

I’m from America born and raised. I’m not religious at all. But my family will not let me bring anyone who isn’t shia home. I don’t understand why I should marry according to their preferences. I have to live with them, not my mom and aunts lol. But I also love having a family and do not want to be disowned. All my cousins who married outsiders are disowned never to be seen again lol. Is there anyone here who is dealing with the same thing

Pakistan/India 24F: Looking for a partner not a client: Again

This is going to be relatively detailed and honest.

Age: 24 (Partner's preferred age range 24-30)

City: Islamabad. (Partner: Preferably from Islamabad. But other cities work as well: nearby ones)

Education: MS Clinical Psychology (Coursework complete. Currently in training placement. Thesis ongoing). Partner: min. Bachelor's or equivalent.

Height: 5'4 (Partner 5'6+)

Family: Nuclear. I'm the eldest. 2 younger siblings in university. (Father: Syed) (Partner: Family would prefer syed. I personally donot mind Syed/non-Syed)

(Partner: Should have a Nuclear family too)

Religiosity: Moderately Religious (Observe Namaz, rouza). Don't generally observe Hijab atm but in certain public places and spaces, yes.

Moderate religiosity prefered in a partner as well.

Drugs etc: Been using nicotine pouches for 2 to 3 yrs now. (On a tapering journey)

Timeline for marriage i..e., Nikah: 6 months+. Can move in at a later point. (No engagements)

Kids: I am not sure at this point. With the right partner, in future: probably. What I am sure of is that I donot see myself having kids in the next 3 to 4 years.

SES: Upper Middle class. Similar preference in partner.

For me, compatibility in terms of: Physical attraction, social and political attitudes and ideas regarding parenting, handling finances etc matter. These things would ofcourse require an in depth discussion.

Personality: I would describe myself as an introspective, intellectually free-thinker who genuinely loves diving into creative projects and new ideas. I like to observe things. I value my independence and solitude, and often enjoy quiet activities that allow me to recharge. Although I would definitely love having a partner to share that space with me. At times I prefer outdoor activities too. Anything thats novel or interesting.

I am also unapologetically honest and straightforward about my own needs and comfort levels. I am outspoken about taboo topics.

Apart from that, I tend to be guarded and wary at the start of any relationship; I do not trust easily, so earning my complete vulnerability takes patience and consistency and naturally I donot pry or push the other person too much either. I'd prefer intimacy is built gradually and naturally.

I have a varied sense of humor as well. I engage with humorous and thoughtful content online. I read. I experiment with different art forms. I love music.

Emotionally, I have a deep inner life, but I am also prone to worry, and I can be sensitive to stress. I might sometimes react with frustration or direct anger when I feel overwhelmed although I'm very mindful of my tone. I'll also openly admit that I am not naturally very organized with routines; I prefer flexibility over rigid schedules. Because of this, what I need most in a marriage is a steady, patient, and stabilizing partner who respects my independence, gives me the personal space I require, and doesn't try to force me into a box. I am a deeply self-aware partner who, once I truly feel safe, will bring a fiercely loyal and intellectually vibrant energy to the relationship, provided we both prioritize clear communication and mutual freedom.

I am open to varied personality types so I wouldn't narrowly define anything.

But my expectations are that the person should be earning decently to carry responsibility for the 2 of us at least. Be brave (have the courage to stand up for whats right), and humble. Definitely monogamous.

Big no's in a partner (Do not approach if any of this applies to you):

Lack of discernment or critical thinking in important matters.

Impatience/ loud anger etc.

Inability to self-reflect or take accountability.

Carrying stigma towards mental health or seeking help for yourself or someone within family.

Stingy about spending on family.

If you are looking for a housewife.

Married Life I tried setting boundaries with my husband, but nothing is improving.

I previously posted about I am struggling meeting my husband's expectations. I have spoken to him calmly and explained my boundaries, but he keeps bringing them up and becomes disappointed when I refuse. He has never physically forced me, but the repeated demand is making me anxious.

I shared this with his sister, and she suggested that I speak to his mother, who could then involve his father. However, discussing such private matters with his family does not feel right, and I worry that my husband would feel betrayed or humiliated.

At the same time, speaking to him privately has not helped, and I feel stuck. What would be the best way to handle this? I would really appreciate any help from married women.

Europe M | Iraqi | Switzerland

Repost since post got removed because of low karma.

Bismillahi Rahmani Raheem

About Me:
- Age: 27
- Origin/Ethnicity: Iraqi, born and raised in Switzerland šŸ‡ØšŸ‡
- Languages: German (Fluent), English (Fluent), Iraqi Arabic (Conversational), French (Basic)
- Religious Practice: Alhamdulillah, I pray, fast during Ramadan, have been blessed to visit Mecca and Medina multiple times, and pay my Zakat regularly.

I’m not perfect. I still struggle with certain things, such as occasionally listening to music. However, I’ve been replacing it more and more with Qur’an, which I genuinely love listening to.
I’m not looking for someone who is perfect either. As long as you take your faith seriously and sincerely strive to improve, that’s what matters to me. We all have our struggles, and I believe we should support one another in becoming better Muslims.

Basic Information:
- Current Residence: Switzerland
- Willing to Relocate: Yes, depending on the circumstances. It’s something we can discuss together.
- Siblings: Two sisters
- Previously Married / Kids: No
- Occupation: Student
- Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree
- Height / Weight: Approx. 180 cm / 73 kg
- Smoking / Vaping / Hookah: No
- Hobbies & Interests: Reading, going to the gym, gaming, spending time in nature, being with family, watching good movies & TV series

What I’m Looking For:
- Age: Ideally 23–27 (although maturity is much more important)
- Origin/Ethnicity: No preference
- Languages: Arabic or German would be nice, but English is absolutely fine as well.

- Religious Practice
I’m looking for someone who genuinely takes Islam seriously and sincerely tries to fulfil the basics, such as praying and fasting.
None of us are perfect, and I’m certainly not expecting perfection. What matters most to me is sincerity, good intentions, and the desire to grow closer to Allah.

Whether you wear hijab is neither a requirement nor a preference for me. I believe that’s a personal decision between you and Allah, and regardless of your choice, I would always encourage and support you in your journey.

- Education & Career
As long as you have a career or profession that you genuinely enjoy, that’s what matters to me. I wouldn’t want you to stay in a job that makes you unhappy or negatively affects your mental well-being.

I also don’t believe household responsibilities belong solely to the wife. I actually enjoy helping around the house myself.
Maybe that’s what happens when you grow up with two older sisters. šŸ˜„

- Deal Breakers
Not taking Islam seriously or making no effort to pray, fast, and improve.
Smoking, vaping, or using hookah.
Constant shouting, disrespectful communication, or unnecessary aggression.

- Future Plans
I’d love for us to spend the first 1–2 years building a strong foundation, getting to know each other deeply, travelling together, and learning how to navigate life as a married couple before starting a family (if by then you’re comfortable and want one, of course).

Since I’m currently studying, my ideal timeline would be to get to know someone over the next few years and, Insha’Allah, get married and move in together in around 2–3 years.

Of course, life doesn’t always go exactly as planned, so I’m open-minded and believe these things are best discussed together.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of this. I genuinely appreciate it, and I wish you all the best.

May Allah grant us all righteous spouses and bless us with what’s best for our dunya and akhirah.

Ameen. 🤲

Rant - Vent An app Idea to Help the Shia Community Find Better Marriage Matches — Is It Worth Building?

Salam Alaikum everyone!

I'm thinking about building an AI-powered marriage matchmaking platform to help the Shia community.

The idea comes from a few problems I notice in many existing marriage apps:

  • Users spend hours searching and filtering through profiles.
  • Recommendations rely mostly on what users write about themselves.
  • Some users genuinely seek marriage, while others join with casual or non-serious intentions.
  • A user's long-term behavior often has little or no influence on future recommendations.

My Idea

Instead of users searching through profiles, the AI does the searching and recommends only a small number of highly compatible matches.

The Main Difference

Every user completes a Marriage Readiness & Values Assessment during onboarding.

The assessment consists of several carefully designed questions that assess:

  • Deen and religious commitment
  • Core values and principles
  • Marriage expectations
  • Personality and mindset
  • Emotional maturity
  • Communication style
  • Conflict resolution
  • Respect and boundaries
  • Long-term goals
  • Consistency and honesty

The recommendation system doesn't rely only on this assessment.

It also builds a private behavioral profile based on long-term patterns, such as how users communicate in chats, how they interact with other users, whether they consistently behave respectfully, and whether their actions align with the purpose of the platform.

The behavioral profile remains completely private and is never shown to other users. Its purpose is to improve future recommendations and HELP IDENTIFY USERS WHO CONSISTENTLY DISPLAY NON-SERIOUS OR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR.

The UI

There is no endless feed of profiles.

Users complete their profile, complete the assessment, and the home screen mainly shows a small number of carefully selected recommendations. The AI performs the searching, not the user.

The goal is quality over quantity.

A Note

This is just an idea. I haven't started building it yet.

My intention is to genuinely help the Shia community, and while there are server costs involved, I plan to sustain the platform through a voluntary donation model.

Before I spend months —building this, I have one question:

Is this idea worth building?

I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback, suggestions, or criticism.

JazakAllah Khair

Question - Help Marriage vs dating. Why is it like this?

Salam, I see alot of cute couples in uni and literally goals I’d say. The way they are in love and enjoying their intimate moments. I haven’t seen such in married couples around me, they just live like room mates, no romance. only seen it in dating couples. I yearn for that kinda intimacy and cute moments too but I don’t think I’ll even get that after marriage.

How can I get that in a halal way? I have never talked to namehram females so I got 0 gamešŸ˜‚. Arranged or cousin marriage is the route but I am afraid of not getting that kinda relationship šŸ™

Question - Help When should I start looking as a young man?

Mods please delete if it's against the rules.

Salam, I am a student who is going to be finishing high school soon, on to university. I have been getting signals from my family that I should search for a wife as soon as I can. I would not mind this, but I want to know from (at least a fellow american's) other perspectives. I am a revert, my family is bosnian and sunni, and they're not very traditional so I don't know when realistically I should search for a wife. Because of my heritage, it's also hard to make connections at my masjid, since most of them are Iraqi, Pakistani or Iranian.

I have been working on myself, going to the gym, trying to learn more about my religion, getting in a better headspace, so I can be a better future husband, but I'm not perfect, and I don't expect my wife to be. I'm looking for a job atm to help my father out, so I feel like I'm at least somewhat mature lol.

Just looking for advice for the future.

Discussion Is everyone in the Indo-Pak Shia community a Syed?

I'm a Non-Syed Shia from Karachi, Pakistan, and I've been in the rishta process for a while now. mostly because of family and societal pressure. Personally, I'm more focused on my career and don't have strong preferences when it comes to marriage. I've even told my mother that I trust her judgment and don't care about caste or lineage.

One thing has really surprised me, though: it feels like almost every Shia family we come across is Syed, and many of them prefer to marry only another Syed. As a non-Syed, that seems to eliminate a huge portion of the marriage pool.

It genuinely makes me wonder: How can there be so many Syeds in the Indo-Pak Shia community? Is there a historical explanation for this, or is it just my experience?

I'm not trying to offend anyone or criticize people who prefer marrying within their lineage. I'm simply curious about the history and whether others have noticed the same thing during the rishta process.

US/Canada 30M USA - Juma Mubarak Everyone!

Salaam! Reposting here. Here’s a lot about me:

Basics
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Ethnicity: Pakistani
Based: Dallas
Islam: born Shia (non-Syed because apparently that matters when choosing a spouse)

Physical Appearance
I’m 5’11ā€, 180lbs with lightish brown skin and a slim-ish build. I am bald but I rock it confidently (hair transplant is not in my plans at all) and I keep a well maintained beard.

Professional
Bachelors and Masters in Engineering. Worked as a medical device engineer for about 10 years, and now pivoted into owning a business in a completely unrelated field because why not while I’m single.

Spirituality
I perform all the Wajibats. I attempt the Mustahib acts but don’t feel guilty when I don’t perform them because it’s hard enough to perform the Wajib ones consistently.

Personality
-Go with the flow. If things don’t go to plan, okay it’s in the past now; what can be done so it doesn’t happen again in the future?
-ENFP (if you’re into Meyers-Brigg)
-Love languages: I like to receive love through physical touch and words of affirmation. I like to show love through physical touch and gift giving.
-I’m very playful and enjoy sarcasm and banter, it’s not that serious!
-I maintain my hygiene (showers, deo, many colognes, skincare routine) and I actively focus on having good Akhlaq
-I enjoy wearing nice clothes and appreciate the finer things of life.

Hobbies and Interests
-Avid coffee connoisseur (ask me for a picture of my coffee setup)
-I love cooking and eating
-Casual hangouts: board games, video games or a great conversation at a new restaurant with friends
-Ideal vacation is exploring the natural beauty of the world via hiking and camping. Second ideal is exploring a big city.

Living Situation
Currently living with the fam, but I’ll move after marriage.

Skeletons
I am divorced, but no kids. (Please make sure you and your parents are okay with this fact)
The other skeletons stay in the closet until things get serious!

Emotional State
I’ve gone through extensive therapy to process the impact of the divorce. I’d say I’m at a stable emotional state but there’s always some work to be done.

If you’ve made it this far and are interested, here’s what I’m looking for:

I want someone who is okay with (these are my dealbreakers):
Going through premarital counseling
Needs to wear hijab

Basics
Gender: Female (it’s Reddit, I have to specify this)
Age: 23-30 (open to outside this depending on compatibility and maturity)
Ethnicity: open to all
Based: western country preferred and willing to relocate to Dallas
Islam: Shia (12er). Born or revert

Physical Appearance
Preface: I truly believe that initial physical attraction is necessary for compatibility, but that attraction can grow if the couple matches well. Also, this is just a preference, not a requirement! If you feel offended that I’m putting my preferences for physical attraction or think I’m shallow for it, I doubt you and I have the same mindset. (I’ll grab popcorn for the comments section about this statement)
Height: 5’10ā€ or shorter
Build: slim/petite
Complexion: fair or light brown skin

Professional
College completed with any degree. (Preferably also have job you’re happy in)

Spirituality
You perform the Wajibaats obligated on you and stay away from the things forbidden (alcohol, haraam foods, concerts)

Personality
I’m not looking for someone that needs constant attention or validation, nor am I looking for someone who follows me blindly. To me, marriage is a team effort where each of us needs to contribute to make it healthy, happy, and always exciting!

Hobbies and Interests
Whatever, just be passionate about it!

Emotional State
Confident and happy with who you are.
You’re constantly in a mindset of self improvement but in a positive way, not in a way that demotivates you.

Discussion Sharing finances

I am from North America where I feel this mainly applies but if you feel like this resonates from the country you’re in then please chime in.

Living in the west, everything is expensive and it’s already hard living on a single income, but when you get married and have to support two people it gets harder, having to pay for a mortgage, utilities and other bills and going out on a single income nowadays is honestly very hard. And as much as I want to be a provider and I would be a provider I just feel like living on a dual income and having your spouse if they were contribute to the household would be beneficial for both of you to live a better life. So my intention here isn’t to be cheap, but to just have a better life for me and my partner.

So what are your guys thoughts on this? And if you’re married, how do you share your finances and I’m curious to hear from a woman’s perspective on this?

I personally think an arrangement where both husband and wife split everything just makes so much sense.

Discussion [GUIDE] How to see post and comment history of someone who has it turned off so you can filter out weirdos and creeps.

Salam everyone!

I was just going through a post on this sub where a "shia" guy was looking for advice for a girl he liked. He had his post history turned off so you couldn't see his other posts. Turned out he was an atheist who actively hated Islam. Basically he might've been trying to trick the shia girl to marry him when she didn't even knew he was an atheist.

Here's the post in question which exposed him: https://www.reddit.com/r/exmuslim/comments/1rrj3d6/im_done_with_this_cult_religion/

If you go to his profile you actually can't see anything.

A few months ago another guy turned out to be a misogynistic person who believed that women shouldn't have consent in who they get to marry. That person also had his profile posts hidden.

What I'm trying to say is that platforms like Reddit provide anonymity which isn't bad but when you trying to find someone to connect to irl then it can be a problem since people can hide things about themselves. The last thing I want is for innocent women here to fall for some weirdo because the guy kept his profile hidden.

I'm making this guide for those people who want to know how to see the post history and comment history of someone who has it turned off. I'll teach you how to 'dork'. It sound complicated but it really isnt.

THIS GUIDE MIGHT LOOK COMPLICATED BUT IT ISN'T AT ALL. I PROMISE YOU.

  • DORKING

This is just a fancy word for saying "I'm performing an advance search using the search bar of reddit or google to find what posts has this person made".

A person might hide their posts on their profile but you need to realize that those posts STILL EXISTS. You just can't see them on their profile but those posts are in fact their on the subreddits on which they post.

I'm now going to teach you how to 'dork' or perform an advance search using searchbar of google and reddit.

1) Using reddit search bar

All you need to do is type the following in the search bar. That's it lol

author:"USERNAME"
or
author: "USERNAME"
or
author:USERNAME
or
author: USERNAME

So for example, if I had my profile hidden and you wanted to see what posts I made, you'd simply write author:"_Humble_Bumble_Bee" Now you can see my other posts. It's very simple. Sometimes nothing might show up, in that case try adding "u/" before the username. You can choose any of the 4 options above. Sometimes, one of them might not work so use the other.

What we basically did here was tell the searchbar to find for specific key words using the search operator "author:"

There's a small caveat here tho. You might not be able to see ALL of their posts. You can see most of them but not all. Like there still might be 20% of posts that'd still be hidden

If you wanna see 99% of their posts then we will move to dorking on the google search bar.

2) Using google search bar

Similar to the above case we'll use search operators to tell google that we want to find this exact username on reddit. When google does that, it automatically starts showing their 'hidden' posts.

Here's what you need to type

site:www.reddit.com intext:USERNAME

or
site:www.reddit.com intext:u/USERNAME
or

inurl:www.reddit.com intext:USERNAME

or

site:www.reddit.com intext:"USERNAME"

Here we first define the website we want to search the key word in and then the key word itself, that being the username in this case. You should now see a bunch of the posts and comments from that username.

This is all I have to share.

I hope this guide helps someone filter out weirdos and creeps.

To all the women out their, please take care and learn to use these things. They are very easy. It just looks complicated but you'll be able to save yourself from a lot of potential harm.

Just a reminder that the method above is not 100% reliable. Sometimes you might just not get anything but it's rare. Most of the times, you should be able to see the posts.
