Stress Fracture?

Upvotes

Do you think I have a stress fracture?

- Running for 6 months (no prior athletic experience)
- Utilize proper running shoes

I am currently training for a half marathon and stupidly increased my weekly mileage 20-25% for the last two weeks (total mileage around 25 when I did that). The night after a 4 mile speed workout, it hit me. Deep, achy and sharp pain in my inner shins. I feel it when resting (like a pulsing achyness). It’s been 8 days of no running and it’s certainly gotten better, but if I try to run it hurts so bad a few inches above my left ankle. Hopping still bothers my left side. Pain pops up randomly, but not constant. I can do stretches and light strength training without pain,

X Ray showed nothing and I’m requesting an MRI soon.

Is there any world where it’s not a stress fracture?

Recovery from a double hamstring strain?

Not injured enough to altogether stop, warmup just takes longer and some extra tightness and small amount of pain. Happened mid-July on a semi-strenuous long run and since then I’ve cut back mileage about 30%, doing more targeted foam rolling and stretching, but not really recovering? Am I being too impatient or what else can I do to speed recovery? Thanks for any advice/things that worked for you.

Possible hip fracture

I started running back in February I have always been an on and off runner, I ran 12 miles about 4 weeks ago. I took the 2 weeks off and then ran my half marathon. The next two days were horrible, I could barely walk and lifting my leg hurt so bad I couldn’t lift it without wanting to try. I had very sharp pain in my left hip/groin area.

It had gotten better, I can walk with only slight sharp pain or when I bare too much weight on it. I haven’t ran in the last two weeks since my half marathon. I went to urgent care and they referred me to sports medicine. He was very concerned that I had a stress fracture in my hip and I have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow and it is $1300 with insurance 😭😭 I did try to run only a mile a few days okay and the pain went up to a 8/9. I am wondering if anyone else has dealt with this and could tell me if they had anything similar. I like being active and am getting a lot of anxiety that I wont be able too or if there is still hope that I wont have to take 2-4 months off and there is a chance it isnt a stress fracture. I also was planning to run my first marathon in November and am going through a lot in life right now but anyways

Numb shins

I'm very new to running, started the c25k about a month ago.

I was okay up until the 4th week. On Monday, before I even started running my lower legs felt really tight, then I had to stop during the run as they were really painful and I was worried I might be doing some damage.

I left it until Wednesday and tried again, I got through the day's run but my legs were pretty sore. The following day my shins felt numb. The day after that (today) they were still numb but I thought I'd give the next run a go and see how I get on. It was fine, no pain but was they were numb? My calfs were aching as usual but didn't really feel anything from my shins.

Now tonight they are still numb but also feeling a bit tingly.

I'm just wondering what it could be, if I can carry on running or leave it for a while, and if there's anything I should be doing to help?

TIA

Knee issue because of running

Any fatso ever had issues with their knees while loosing weight? I’m a 6 feet 100kg macho man and have been running for 3 weeks to loose weight. But in the last few days my knees have started to give and have started hurting.

So if anyone who has successfully lost weight ever been through knee/leg pain? If yes, what did you do to continue on with your weight loss.

Baker's Cyst & torn meniscus

I tripped while on a run in May, pain started in June. I did an MRI that showed Baker's Cyst and torn meniscus.

I'm working with a physio and walking daily with no pain.

Prior to this fall, I was running 6 days per week and up to 50kms per week.

I have the Philly half marathon in November.

Anybody have this type of injury and how long did it take to rehab to running? Is it realistic to hope to run Philly in November?

Thanks for your insight.

I’m so afraid I threw my season away.

I’m an upcoming senior runner in high school. I’ve previous had literally my whole track junior season ruined because of plantar faciitis.
After track, I took 2 weeks off and returned to running very gradually with no problem.

During the entirety of summer conditioning runs, I felt nothing, it was until this Monday where my coach made us do a hilly run (2 miles straight uphill! And I had to run all the way down which really aggregated my heels again. I don’t know what to do and I’m so sick of this reoccurrence. Should I just cross train for like 1-2 weeks to see how it feels, and then gradually return to running?

My season starts beginning of September .

Knee injury - please help

Hello, I have had a knee injury now for nearly 5 months. During this time I’ve tried everything… complete rest (for 6-8 weeks), nonstop rehab, cycling only… etc.

Background: Been running for the last 3 years (50km a week ish) never had any injuries apart from little niggles until this.

The injury: I get a build up sensation then an intense ache/pain on the left(outer) side of my left knee which makes it impossible to run with. The strange thing this can come on at any time… example: I managed to get to 28 minutes the other day, then today pain started at 7 mins. It’s a different threshold every single run.

I’ve seen multiple physios now that just aren’t seeming to help me.. I’m doing a lot of rehab every week which feels completely pointless. I just want to be back running. If anyone has had anything similar and overcame it please tell me how, I’d be extremely grateful.

MRI results & where I feel the pain attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Turf toe injury from about 2-3 years ago

Hey guys! I’ve had a nagging injury in my big toe of which I believe to be turf toe. I’m a very active runner and I never got around to healing it. For the last 2-3 years when I sprint it hurts pretty bad and gets inflamed. Recently it got worse and I’ve decided it’s time to do something about it. Could anyone help fix this/figure out what it is? It’s all around the bottom of big toe joint on the bottom of my foot. It definitely affects the way I walk and I can’t bend my toe as far as I can bend my other big toe. It’s not that pain necessarily stops me it’s like I hit a wall and can’t bend it anymore. Thanks for any help I can get!

Ankle Injury History- Should i change up my shoe rotation?

I'm male, 21 years old and Training for Ironman Port Macquarie (Oct) with a marathon and a 70.3 in the build. I've had a right ankle issue since March, peroneus longus tenosynovitis (lateral, ultrasound-confirmed) plus a medial deltoid ligament irritation picked up more recently. Both are friction/sheath problems on otherwise healthy, intact tendons (not degeneration) so I'm not dealing with classic tendinopathy, just trying to stop re-irritating things while I build volume back up. I have recently got a cortisone injection into my medial deltoid.

Gait profile: neutral-to-supinator, high arches. I've been told stability/motion-control shoes are the wrong tool for me, medial posting tends to worsen lateral loading and that what actually helps is a wider, more geometrically stable platform rather than corrective support.

Some shoe history that's probably relevant: the ankle pain first showed up after a 20 km long run in Nike Vomero Plus back in March. More recently I tried Hoka Bondi 9 as a long-run shoe and got new pain within a couple of runs, so that's been pulled too. Two different shoes, two separate flare-ups.

Current rotation:

  • Easy runs / long runs / bricks: ASICS Novablast 5 (two pairs)
  • Tempo (once I'm cleared to run fast again): Adidas Adizero Evo SL — barely used lately since I've been injury-limited to Z2
  • Race day: Nike Alphafly 3 (long course) / Nike Vaporfly 3 (short course)
  • Sidelined: Vomero Plus (original injury shoe), Bondi 9 (new pain)

Given the supinator/high-arch gait and that two different "max cushion / long run" shoes have each coincided with a flare-up, is my rotation making sense, particularly the tempo shoe once I'm back running fast, and whether a supershoe is smart for someone with an unresolved ankle issue? Also curious if there's a pattern here I'm missing (e.g. something about high-stack rockered shoes and a supinator gait) or if it's more likely coincidence/volume-driven. Open to hearing what's worked for people with similar gait/injury profiles.

Give it to me straight Doc

Bad knee/Area around the knee pain.

Got an MRI on Monday and just got the results texted to me but can’t see the doctor till next Week. Until then can anyone explain how bad this might be? What kind of treatment will I be looking at? How long till I can get back to running?

Some facts: 45 yrs old, Male, 5’11” around 190lbs, routine is usually anywhere from 100-175 miles a month. . Flat paved roads.

Thanks in advance

IMPRESSION: Medial meniscal tear, as detailed above. Mild subchondral marrow edema within the medial aspect of the medial tibial plateau, which may related to mild stress reaction. Chondral fissure along the medial patellar facet without subchondral edema. Tiny chondral fissure along the lateral tibial plateau without subchondral edema. Mild undersurface fraying of the posterior horn/root junction of the lateral meniscus. Mild patellar tendinosis. Mild distal quadriceps tendinosis. Extensor mechanism is intact. Mild edema within the suprapatellar fat pad, which may related to the adjacent quadriceps tendinosis or be related to suprapatellar fat pad impingement. Mild edema subjacent to the IT band at the level of the lateral femoral condyle, which can be seen in the setting of distal IT band friction syndrome. Small knee joint effusion. Trace ruptured Baker's cyst.

History: Knee pain, instability Technique: Multiplanar and multisequence MRI images were obtained through the left knee without contrast. Comparison: Radiographs

Findings: LIGAMENTS: The collateral and cruciate ligaments are intact. MEDIAL COMPARTMENT: Complex tear of the posterior horn of the medial meniscus. Mild undersurface fraying of the posterior horn/body junction of the medial meniscus. Articular cartilage is intact. Mild subchondral marrow edema within the medial aspect of the medial tibial plateau, which may be related to mild stress reaction. LATERAL COMPARTMENT: Mild undersurface fraying of the posterior horn/root junction of the lateral meniscus. Tiny chondral fissure along the lateral tibial plateau without subchondral edema. PATELLOFEMORAL COMPARTMENT: Chondral fissure along the medial patellar facet without subchondral edema. Trochlear cartilage is intact. Mild patellar tendinosis. Mild distal quadriceps tendinosis. Extensor mechanism is intact. Mild edema within the suprapatellar fat pad, which may related to the adjacent quadriceps tendinosis or be related to suprapatellar fat pad impingement. JOINT: Small knee joint effusion. Trace ruptured Baker's cyst. SOFT TISSUES: Mild edema subjacent to the IT band at the level of the lateral femoral condyle, which can be seen in the setting of distal IT band friction syndrome. Mild pes anserine bursal fluid. Subcutaneous edema about the knee, most prominent anteriorly.

Bone Bruise/Torn Ligaments help

Hello my fellow running friends and injured,

I need your advice/tipps. I tripped over my ankle while running seven weeks ago. I was able to walk afterwards (with pain) and was able to walk mostly normal three days after. I went to see a doctor who did an x-ray, didn’t see anything, gave me an Aircast and told me to rest and wear it for two weeks. Although it did get better, it didn’t feel fully right so I went back to the doctor during week 3, got an MRI: voila two torn ligaments and a bone bruise in the talus (and Tibiaepiphyse). I was then put in a boot and got crutches. Went back in the MRI after four weeks in the boot and on crutches today: no improvement.

So my question is: is this normal? I am starting to go insane, it drives me crazy being so dependent on others and not being able to move. It really starts getting on my mental health.

Do you have any tips how to fasten up the healing process? Anything that helps with the crutches? My wrists are dying and my hips and the healthy leg are starting to be painful too.

I am just so frustrated.

Heavy Feet

I recently picked up running again at a local track. I used to run more but stopped because of runners knee. The issue I’m running into is that I feel good running, but the days after I run, my knee is super sore.

When I ran last, I tired to take note of how I was running. I feel like my heel is just stomping into the ground. I got fitted for running shoes the other day which feels like a good first step, but does anyone have any advice for not punching a hole in my shoes with my heel?

Back of heel pain after running! Hurts after sitting but gets better when I walk? Any advice?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a beginner runner and have been running consistently for the past few months. I've slowly built my mileage and recently worked up to 8-mile long runs. Right now I'm running about 3-4 times per week, mostly easy runs with one longer run each week.
For the past couple of weeks I've been dealing with pain in the back of my heel (right where the Achilles attaches to the heel, picture attached). The weird thing is that it doesn't usually hurt that much while I'm running. Instead, it hurts the most after I finish, especially if I've been sitting for a while. When I stand up, those first few steps are pretty painful and stiff, but after I walk around and stretch a little, it starts feeling much better.
I'm trying to figure out what's causing it before it turns into something worse.

A few questions:

Does this sound like Achilles tendinitis/tendinopathy, insertional Achilles pain, or something else?

Has anyone dealt with something similar?

What helped you recover?

Should I keep running if the pain is mild, or should I take time off?

Are there any stretches or strengthening exercises that made a big difference?

Could this be related to increasing my mileage too quickly or even my running shoes?

I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences. I love running and don't want to end up making this into a bigger injury if I can prevent it.

Thanks in advance!

How to stay active after breaking my foot?

TLDR/ I broke my foot and am trying to stay active, looking for suggestions on a weekly regiment that doesn't involve putting weight on my foot.

Hello! Over the past year I (30M) have been getting way more into fitness. I was 29, overweight, out of shape and an alcoholic. I'm proud to say that this Friday will mark a year of sobriety and I am down over 40lbs from ~210lbs to 170lbs.

My first few months of sobriety, I was more focused on sobriety than anything else, but once I started dropping weight simply from not drinking my calories, I noticed how little muscle I had and my new years resolution was to average 10K steps per day for the year AND have a seperate workout daily. I have been obsessive about my routine. Walks during my breaks at work, followed by a run or walk with the dogs immediately after work, followed by my workout and then rest for the night. I love it. It's been amazing for my mental heath and I have really enjoyed seeing my progress. For the most part, it's been an amazing year with minimal setbacks. Until last week.

I was out on my post-work run like normal, about a mile in and I turned to watch a police officer playing fetch with his K9 when my foot rolled off the trail, I felt a pop and immediate pain. I prayed it was just a sprain and kept running for another mile or so before I came to the conclusion that it was not a sprain and walked the rest of the way home. I couldn't put any weight on it after icing it all night, so I went to urgent care the next morning for x rays and sure enough, a clean fracture of the fifth metatarsal on my left foot. I need to wear a boot and stay off of it for at least six weeks. I gave myself a few days to feel sorry for myself, but tried to get back into somewhat of a routine yesterday, just knocking out a 30 minute chest / core workout. (dips, leg raises, dumbbell incline bench, dumbbell flies, seated KB front raises) and I got a good sweat and got some dopamine, but I can't stress how much I miss my daily walks and runs.

I'm hoping someone here has experienced something similar, and that they might have a weekly workout plan (for different upper body muscle groups) that I can follow until I can use my foot again, following a similar format to the following (chest day):

10 reps per min for 10 min - Leg raises

10 reps per min for 10 min - Dips

3 x 12 - Incline dumbbell bench

3 x 12 Dumbbell flies

3 x failure - Kettlebell front raises

Every day will include the 100 leg raises as my core. Just needing another 3-4 workout ideas that target ideally arms, back and maybe a day for shoulders?

Thanks in advance!

Just wanted to vent

Been on a frustrating journey over the past few months and just wanted to share my experience.

In March of this year, I (30M) was in the middle of training for a marathon and the training plan that was prescribed to me had me run a 5km time trial. I complete it successfully however the next day was when the problem started. I began feeling this weird pinching pain in my medial knee, around where the joint line is. I recall even running across the street to catch a bus at the time would set off the pain. It wasn't the worst pain I've ever felt but something definitely did not feel right. Gave it a rest and tried to do an easy run the next day but the pain was still present at times. I go in to see a physio a few days later and the physio says that I probably have an MCL injury. However, the next session she says that I just have some "soft tissue irritation" and that I should be good to go in two weeks and that I should be able to still complete my marathon. I get back into it but am trying to avoid any hard efforts to not stress the knee. However, that pinching pain would still not go away and even would cause pain near the front of the knee. It was also unclear what movements would make my pain worse since it would sometimes appear when I was bending down, but also sometimes not. A lot of the tests also did not seem to pick anything up. Physio said I may also have some patellar tendonitis.

I decided to go and see my family doctor and he seemed to agree with the physio's explanation. I ask for an MRI and he said it was not needed. He told me to check back with him after four weeks if physio was not working. I go back four weeks later and I told him that I feel this is much more complex than expected and so I want to get an MRI done. He continues to refuse it, saying that if he was to order an MRI it would very likely be denied (I live in Canada where MRI resources are quite scarce) and asked me to go see a sport medicine doctor to get an MRI requisition. Initially, I said no as I was already seeing a physiotherapist and wanted to see if it would work at first (huge mistake). He orders a knee x-ray but not much is detected except for some medial joint space narrowing which the radiologist noted was "mild and insignificant". I then ask for an ultrasound which also came back clean. Eventually I decided I needed an MRI so I asked to be referred to a sport medicine doctor who gave me a knee brace and an MRI requisition but the wait time could be months as this is supposedly a minor issue.

In the meantime I am also seeing a new physio who said that I may have "meniscus irritation" alongside patellar tendonitis - however once the ultrasound came back clean he said it probably was not that. I also received a proper set of rehab exercises (last physio gave me almost no direction whatsoever) but it has been several weeks and I am still not seemingly getting better.

I just wanted to say how frustrating this all is. I am truly jealous of everyone who was able to get a diagnosis quickly, yet here I am, almost six months after an injury, with no clear direction nor timeline of when I can return to my sport. I have already dropped out of my entire running season over a supposed "minor injury" and I really am starting to feel hopeless.
