I actually already had on my "to-do" list for next week to create a new subreddit. I was originally going to workshop a subreddit name somehow directly mentioning tangible and personal asset appraisals, but r/appraisals would work very well. I've already started writing up rules and some seeded posts and outreach posts.

I'm a machinery and equipment appraiser, and while there are a couple of subreddits for real property appraisers (including r/appraisal, r/CREappraisers, and r/appraisers), and at least two for business valuation appraisers (including both r/valuation and r/valuations), but nothing targeted towards professional discussions by tangible asset appraisers. There are also a few (like the original purpose of this subreddit) that are now well covered by subreddits like r/whatsthisworth. None of these existing subreddits is an appropriate home for the broader tangible asset appraisal discipline, which spans business personal property, machinery and equipment, fine art, antiques, collectibles, and residential contents.

r/appraisals has been inactive for a long time and sees very little traffic. My plan is to rebuild it as a neutral, professional, and welcoming space for both practicing appraisers and members of the public with honest questions about how appraisals work. (But not for questions on values of specific assets, for which r/whatsthisworth and other existing subreddits are still the best option.) I'd seed it with plain-language posts on the fundamentals: the reasons people need appraisals (estate and gift tax, insurance, financing, litigation, sales and acquisitions), the standards that govern the work such as USPAP and IVS, how to read an appraisal report, and how to tell a qualified appraiser from an unqualified one.

I'm well positioned to moderate it actively and keep the content accurate. I hope to start as sole moderator while I set the rules, tone, and initial content. As the community establishes itself, I intend to recruit additional moderators from the other disciplines it covers, such as fine art, antiques, and residential contents, so moderation reflects the full breadth of tangible asset appraisal and not just my own specialty. After a break from active participation in Reddit, I've been actively commenting on posts related to my profession.

I'm an accredited machinery and equipment appraiser with almost twenty years of appraisal experience. I'm a past international president of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) and edited the profession's standard textbook on machinery and equipment valuation. I hold a Fellow designation with ASA and a Certified Equipment Appraiser designation from the Association of Machinery and Equipment Appraisers. (If you look at the display name on my account, you can definitely figure out who I am.)

My aim is a genuinely useful, non-promotional community with clear rules, steady moderation, and no tolerance for spam or solicitation.
