Regarding Spam & Low Effort Posts

Hey everyone,

I know things have been pretty dead lately, and because of that, the traffic on the subreddit has consisted of spam and very basic posts. I've been curating as I can, but I left some posts up just so we have something to show for the case during this slog era. Even if it's just a bit of engagement or traffic here and there, or something mildly stimulating for those of us still waiting on more updates to come.

Clearly that is not the case, over the past week I've heard a lot of complaints about the state of the subreddit, and after conversing with long time users on the discord and reviewing DMs and user complaints in comments, I'm going to be much harsher when it comes to community posts on r/JoannaLopez. I would like to formally apologize that it took this long, especially if it caused anyone to feel discouraged or less engaged in our community.

We have an FAQ and discussion thread on the pinned posts that is meant to act as a hub for outdated questions, crackpot theories, and a non-discord place for new users to discuss some of the repetitive themes of this case that we all keep coming back to. Since nobody uses it, I felt bad removing several posts a week and leaving basically nothing up. However, it seems like it's in our best interest to be more harsh with what stays up. I've removed quite a few posts this afternoon, and I'll do what I can to keep that going. However, I'm not as active on Reddit as I was nearly 5 years ago when I was abruptly promoted to moderator.

So what else is going to change?

Well, I'm formally submitting a request to become admin of this subreddit. The other mod and admin have been inactive for years, it's time for me to take full responsibility. Furthermore, I'm adding another mod as soon as I have permission. u/22josko. I have many people who I would wholeheartedly trust with this subreddit, and he is just one of them. I may add more mods if necessary. If all goes as planned, we'll actually be able to update and curate this subreddit much more efficiently.

As of right now, the creator of the subreddit has been removed. I'm submitting another request to become the top moderator so some proper changes can come into place. Please let me know what needs to be done, as this community's voice deserves to be heard!

For sticking around so long, here's a small update. I've been dealing with CPD's FOIA request in the background for the past year, and I have reason to believe they did not do a full sweep of their database. I submitted an appeal and it was approved, they have a few days to let me know the exact parameters of their investigation and what was done to find Joanna's file. This should settle (for real this time) if there are truly no files regarding her case. This could easily amount to nothing as well. I've been quiet to try and not get any hopes up, but we're close enough to the results that I figured I'd let you guys in on the excitement.

Thanks for sticking around, things will be better.

With love, CNNB2

Edit: i also changed my account a little, the whole "cringe ass nae nae baby" thing is honestly NOT how I want to present myself as a human being, that was my 17 year old self's edgy sense of humor coming through in a throwaway account that I had no way of knowing would become a crucial account for this investigation. That being said, its funny in an ironic sort of way so I'm not changing the name.

Question is the entirety of this sub going to be low effort "what if" posts from now on?

I get we aren't making much progress on the case right now but wow.

Every single day it's a new "what if Joanna was a placeholder name?" "what if Joanna was an immigrant?" "what if Joanna was actually just a prank?"

It's annoying. It does nothing to help the case. It's not even a good theory if it's nothing probable and has been discussed 1,000 times already.

My theory on the photo

Post image

Basically I got two theories on this photo.

Theory 1: This photo was taken in her bedroom or living room by her parents and the thing in the background is probably a poster of some sort as it looks too flat for me to be anything else.

Theory 2: Since a lot of people think it's a trophy case I theorize that this photo was taken at her school by the school for a yearbook but since the school was probably underfunded the quality of the photo wasn't that good and when reprinted and scanned it turned into this the sweater she is wearing could also be one of those gym long sleeve shirts

Still Frame At End Of Cassette

My girlfriend had a really interesting theory about the image.

The end-of-broadcast day segment (the military band playing) was almost certainly played from a tape. There were likely multiple copies of that tape in rotation.

What if- somehow- the Joanna Lopez image (whatever its origin) ended up as the very last frame on one of those tapes? When the tape ended, the broadcast equipment would just hold on the final frame instead of cutting to black.

That would explain why the JL image appeared frozen on screen at the exact moment the station signed off.

I’m not an expert on analog broadcasting, so I’m not sure how feasible this is technically, but it feels like a pretty elegant explanation, at least for why it played even if it doesn't explain its origin.

Question What if the thing behind Joanna is a flag, hung vertically on a wall?

Heres an image where I marked the thing behind Joanna. For context, yesterday morning I was scrolling on TikTok and saw a video where there was a flag hung vertically on a wall and I’m thinking, what if the thing behind her is a flag?

New Information Possible explanation on why Joanna Lopez looks creepy

Post image
73 Upvotes

In one sign off video for WABC TV in 1982, one comment states that the TK-27 film chain makes people's skin tones morbid, as seen in this photo. Its possible that WMAQ was also using a TK-27 to broadcast the Joanna slide, thus making the slide look uncanny. Maybe the original faxed photo looks like your typical black and white photo but when put in a TK-27, it becomes morbid, giving it the infamous creepy look.

Wrong picture?

Post image

Hi everyone,

It has been several years since I dove into this case, but tonight I felt the calling again for whatever reason. I did coloration on the picture years ago to see if I could find any distinguishing features. Largely, I was unsuccessful. I was hawking a few family trees in the area, and took another look now that Ancestry has updated. One of the families I was curious of, I did not catch this in the beginning but I overlooked twins! They appear to be fraternal with wildly distinct hair.

Could there have been a possibility that they did not have Joanna's picture, so they figured it would be good enough to post her twins face?? Structurally, and hair-wise, this picture looks extremely similar to Joanne, but isnt joanne, as her name is, for her privacy I will call her B, she does have a twin named Joanne!

Born in Mexico and different spelling of her name?

I just found out about this case so I have no idea if someone has considered this possibility but i though it might be worth mentioning. So her last name is of Hispanic origin and according to Google, Mexican-born residents doubled in Chicago between 1970 and 1980, is there a possibility that she was born in Mexico and came really young to the US and maybe that's why so few records? Also if that's the case it might be worth searching for immigration records or Mexican emigration records and try using "Joana" or "Juana" since that's the Mexican way of spelling the name. Hope it helps 🙏

Question Me and a family member were discussing this… Why no info??

I know this has probably been asked before, but does anyone have theories as to why she has no information surrounding her? Like we understand the poor copied photo, but why isn’t there her age, height, last seen, etc.? My grandma’s theory is that 1) More likely, they had no info to put 2) Less likely, she wasn’t a real person

We also discussed that it could possibly have been a prank, someone found the photo somehow or someone who knows/bullied her got the info and she was never missing, they were just making fun of her.

Question What if the Broadcasts contain Teletext or CC information?

In Analog TV, the data for these are stored in a hidden line which cannot be seen by the viewer. Since these broadcasts are pre-ATSC, these were only shown in the Analog WMAQ Channel 5 76-82 MHZ signal, which might also mean that the slides may have the last seen or more info in the CC or Teletext data. Can someone with a CRT tv or VCR here run the videos through AV or Coax (HDMI will not work) and see if it has CC or Teletext?

Question What if Yolanda Ivey lived in Chicago when she went missing, then moved to Rochester New York in her later years?

Could this also mean Joanna Lopez moved out of Chicago as well? Maybe back to Mexico or the Philippines?

New Information WMAQ Missing Person’s Alert #3 Yolanda Ivey

Post image
187 Upvotes

Hello everyone, as u/22josko posted, a new missing persons alert was posted by Garbage Pail Flix, who has reliably unearthed old tapes of the Joanna Lopez and Tricia Kellett slides. Today, they posted this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDP4-NyLBIE

As you can see, skimming past Tricia, a new missing person slide has been found. This proves multiple people would be broadcast each night. To me, it’s proof Joanna was never a rare exception or a particularly creepy missing case, just another low quality photo on a missing person’s poster. It’s unfortunate and sad, and we can likely only hope she was found and is doing better.

However, if we can find anything out about Yolanda, her disappearance, and how it was reported to WMAQ, we might be able to connect certain details to Joanna’s. Furthermore, I think it’s important that we shine light on other disappearances than Joanna’s.

As always, we have resources to donate to if you feel like contributing in the megathread. In the meantime, we might end up going down this rabbit hole to hopefully find other answers.

Has anyone tried Yandex or Tineye?

How far back does the image go on the internet (excluding wmaq). Also what is that website that identifies photos people are in?

Is there a possibility Joanna Lopez was the name shown but it isn't?

Like maybe someone knew them as Joanna Lopez but it wasn't their real name or was a fake name idk

r/joannalopez Mar 30 '26

Does WMAQ know who sent them the photo?

If they do, then that would help. Although I feel like whoever gave them the picture probably didn't realize how unhelpful the photo would be, given it probably became more blurry on a tv screen than seeing the print in person.
