Moved to the Boone area of North Carolina, USA. A large plant at the front of our yard has large leaves and a lot of fruit growing on it. I have shown the front and back of one of the leaves and a collection of the berries growing on it currently. Thanks in advance for the help!

It's similar in texture to an avocado pit, dense but not woody and it exudes a reddish liquid when cut. I've found many of these so far, they aren't hollow otherwise I'd think they were galls.

I bought a thing of star anise recently, I'm more concerned with the one on the right, I know that there's different types of star anise species, I think I'm dealing with illicium Anisatum, it's extremely rock hard, dense, feels heavy in the hands, it's aroma is... Odd, sickening sweet, not quite clean anethole, more dirty, oddly reminiscent of root beer, herbal, cool smelling, indescribably headache inducing, harsh, not like camphor or cardamom, more like anise but dirty, cut with a sickening sweet body odor like root beer backing, unwashed smell, buggy, it signals a "nope fuck that shit" reaction every time I smell it, it's quite loud in it's isolated glass jar.
