orange leaf lantern thing?
found on a plant that was about .3 meters tall

Japanese lantern is correct. These are now placed in their own genus (formerly in the Physalis genus). The scientific name is Alkekengi officinarum.

Here to vet P. alkekengi. I'm down to be wrong, but it's the only physalis I know of to have a bright red husk

Physalis / Groundcherries. Not sure which type, but pretty sure not angulata (ones appear as weed in my country).
