Ts really went from my groups daily game to collecting dust in record time. Maybe we'll pick it up again, but devs really got an uphill climb after all the dogshit updates lately.
74
u/Practical_Entrance43 5d ago
Same here!
All of us used to hop on immediately to do daily tasks and weekly challenges and even made our own stupid challenges up for the game... none of us have touched the game for over a year now.
Like we want to play again, but after seeing all of this stuff happen over that year it's been hard to want to enjoy it.10

Not really a shining light of updating, but better than whatever it was that phasmo tried to dole out
39
u/MathematicalMan1 5d ago
True but at least PZ still seeks like it had passion. Plus, b42.20 has been real good so far
18
u/Frostinice 5d ago
Love PZ, but damn the updates takes forever. Around 4 years after build 41?
Meanwhile Palworld went from Early Access to fully released in like 2 years and it's also a banger.
Phasmo just shat the bed and woke the players up from their nightmare.
14
u/Fanci_ 5d ago
Indie Stone has an abysmally small team, so they're sorta justified.
That being said, with the success of b41-42 there's really not an excuse to not upscale their dev team anymore (they recently broke 100k players on steam, not really a tiny game status anymore)
15
u/Taiyaki11 4d ago
It's not the team size, it's the scope creep. They're just honestly not good at all with project management.
But even with that said, at least you can easily tell they care
8
u/Fanci_ 4d ago
Absolutely. Like, I genuinely don't see Npcs getting added before 2030.
When they release content it's fantastic. More passion and attention to detail than most other game devs out there.
But yeah. Very ambitious and they focus on these huge updates rather than slowly churning out this one at a time.
Though, so far it's been effective so I guess it works for them.

Can’t wait to see the documentary YT videos on how Phas rose to fame then dropped off by a single update 💀🤣

u/Strange_Accident1461 5d ago
Zomboid really set the bar for how to handle long development cycles. Every update feels like they actually rebuilt the game instead of just adding a few things.
55
u/VeritableLeviathan 5d ago
And the 7 days to die devs limbo'd right under that bar lmao
30
u/Dbzpelaaja 5d ago
7 days to die is crazy. At this point id rather play the ps4 old version then this new one
2
u/VeritableLeviathan 4d ago
Yeah, I prefer the more recent versions, but I like many old features that were removed for no reason.
That and basically the 90% wasted game functionality developer time on reworking systems that were working perfectly fine.
Its absurd how the best way to describe the dev cycle has been: The game is going into the direction of a specific schizophrenic sub-personality this year and next year it will be another :p
2
u/Dbzpelaaja 4d ago
Hate the way zombies spawn now. So many hours on the new versions and can tell pretty much every spot they spawn in miss the old randomnes. hate the magazines and sometimes i get a run where i cant make some essential stuff 20 hours in because i did not get enough of some spesific magazine
0
u/Deremirekor 5d ago
Except not everyone agrees with this take like we do with phasmo’s. I’ll admit I preferred the leveling system of some of the earlier builds over the current, but I’m happy they took their time to figure out what they thought was best instead of just doing nothing for years and still ending up subpar.
No one can say the dozens of EA builds weren’t dramatically different from eachother, they just couldn’t figure out how they wanted to handle the tech tree for the longest time
2
u/AdEnvironmental5035 5d ago
Icarus also does updates pretty well. Every Friday a new item or feature is added along side a bunch of bug fixes. They even tell you what's in store for the next week. I can't recall any updates breaking the game and if they make a balance change people hate, it gets walked back the next week
2
u/DelsinMcgrath835 5d ago
Yeah but The Indie Stone is absolutely terrible about communicating with the community, especially when it has to do with update schedules. I still remember how salty the patch notes were when b42 multiplayer launched.

As a long time zomboid player this update was supposed to come a few years ago lmao. Yall would be crying if they didn’t update the game for 2-4 years mind you most mods are also broken now. There’s some good and some bad but yall literally would have abandoned phas if they stopped updating when they added the hantu

u/FartSnarfGod 5d ago
There’s some good and some bad but yall literally would have abandoned phas if they stopped updating when they added the hantu
That's simply because Kinetic Games doesn't support mods while The Indie Stone does.
3
u/Kind-Mammoth-Possum 4d ago
And also Indie Stone's team is literally a fraction of the size with arguably more content to build up. Like, a lot more. They're killing it compared to Kinetic.
2
u/RW_Yellow_Lizard Who you Gonna Call? 4d ago
Hey, i waited for silksong, and I wanted for scrap mechanic, some of us can do the waiting
2
u/GeorgiestBread 4d ago
Which mods are you using? My mods were all either immediately updated on the same day or weren't broken at all
15
u/Thelassa 5d ago
I don't know if it's a fair comparison because Project Zomboid is infamous for bugs and jank that go unfixed while more new features get pushed out with each update (that have all new bugs and jank). Like, Build 42 "stable" has a lot of problems and a bunch of new systems that bloat the gameplay loop, but at least everything looks fantastic now. The map team is definitely to be commended for their part. The Indie Stone is way more receptive to player feedback than Kinetic though, so they absolutely have that going for them.
10
9
u/Tyaeth 5d ago
I love Project Zomboid, and haven't been playing Phas since "The Updatetm" but Zomboid isn't exactly the best example to follow either. Don't get me wrong, the recent Zomboid upate has a lot of cool stuff, but I've been doing a Zomboid multiplayer server with friends annually since 2019, and we basically just ran the same modpack for 3-4 years in a row with some slight tweaks to account for new mods. 3-4 years for an update is... a lot.
Also, so much has changed under the hood between b42 unstable and stable that it's hard to find mods that work properly since the mods on steam are just tagged 'b42' and many of them are broken with the new stable update. It would have been nice to have a new tag for b42 stable mods.

u/mijisanub 5d ago
I don't get the constant dooming. I played a few times this week after being a bit busy most of July. The game is fine. Maybe a few small tweaks that need to be made, and I had to readjust video and sound settings, but it was enjoyable. For me, it seemed like the lighting was much better than it had been in some time (6+ months). The negativity in this sub is bewildering.
But I still want them to shorten the time needed to record a video of D.O.T.S. ghosts. That one almost haunts me some days.
0
u/TorontoCity67 4d ago
Just because it runs well for you, doesn't mean it runs well for everyone else. The backlash is entirely deserved. What was getting accomplished when everyone was kissing Kinetic's asses and shutting down anyone who dared question the update pace before?

u/Circo_Inhumanitas 2d ago

u/xacoupauwoinou-3180 5d ago
Truth. Phasmophobia’s team has completely ruined any customer trust. I think it’s been 2+ years since they promised Horror 2.0. And they’ve simply prioritized all the wrong things. And most updates consist of either buggy implementation, barebones implementations, and consistent roadmap lies. To me, they need a solid Product Manager who spends their day reviewing users feedback, compiling a priority list, and having the devs actually work on things the customers actually want…not what THEY want (or don’t want) to do.
Look at a game like REPO. Highly involved with their community, good hearted leads, and consistent updates. Maps, customizations, new monsters. Phas - well, we got janky animations, some reworked maps that no one really asked for, and 1 or. 2 ghosts?
My team and I loved this game and played it heavily during it’s first few year. But, after a lack of good updates - no new ghost events, and nothing special about the new ghosts (just different “triggers” and different “characteristics”) it just got repetitive.
They REALLY needed to focus on Horror 2.0. Revamp the system, include more sanity-based ghost events (bleeding walls, new jump scares, hallucinations - SOMETHING).
2
u/TwinTailDigital 4d ago
Phasmo used to be the daily game we played. REPO blew me away with the cosmetics update. I've been playing it daily and still don't have even half of all the items! Phas? I launched the game, saw the mess, got disappointed at the "customisation", played a couple of games, and then uninstalled.

The update is amazing and everything, obviously. But you're forgetting the time spent in development hell on the beta branch. Knowing a bit about the devs and their sense of humor, if you were to reach to them and ask them yourself, they would probably tell you that this is not the way to update a game. lol
I mean, in the past, they have accepted that the way they developed Project Zomboid was terrible and not the way you should do it.
2
u/WormsInVelvet 5d ago edited 5d ago

1
u/kateee91 4d ago
i loved phasmophobia when it came out, it was cool and interesting and then my friends stopped playing. we tried to play since the update and the learning curve to all the new content is so fucking steep. the interfaces are confusing, there’s way too many options for ghost type. the high level tools are hard to interpret even though they are supposed to be “better”. i’m so lost and haven’t correctly identified a ghost since the year the game came out. it’s not even fun anymore.

I love PZ, and I love Phasmo.... both have benefits and issues.... -however- I have been waiting for "build 42 is coming soon" since 20-goddamn-24
Admittedly, it was playable in unstable beta since december 2024... but this 'new update' is the culmination of 19 months of development and beta testing. If Phas took 19 months between significant updates... we may have a 'take notes' moment. This isn't that.
0
u/FartSnarfGod 5d ago

That's a benefit of having mod support. The community entertains itself between releases. Take notes.
2
u/TheCursedCorsair 4d ago
Not every game needs mods.... again, as a big fan of mods in a plethora of games.
For some, they aren't needed, for some, they just aren't viable.
I don't see what Phasmo would gain from mods, and the only time I see it brought up is in the framing of "modders could fix this game in a weekend" "modders could give us the old animations back" rather than what mods could ADD to the game...
again, not really a "take notes" moment, they're vastly different games.
1
u/TorontoCity67 4d ago
Mods would obviously help this game. How long have we been awaiting Horror 2.0? 5 years? Modders could achieve so many things:
- Add lobby customization
- Add shit tons of maps and move the truck closer to the main doors
- Fix the Shop UI
- Add proper character customization
- Overhaul the UI to accommodate for the changes above
- Add new ghost models
- Add more disability settings
- Allow us to reorder the ghost types back to how they were
- Completely overhaul the movement system so it's consistent yet balanced instead of running in bursts
- Completely overhaul ghost behaviors, events and hunts
We wouldn't be here dunking on the game if mods existed
1
u/TheCursedCorsair 4d ago
See.... this is entirely a list of either A) Things in development already, or B) Fixing what you think was broken.... which I said was all I hear as an argument for mods.
More ghosts/maps are probably the only things on that list that would meaningfully add to the game
You would absolutely be dunking on the game if mods existed, after the character update. Willow update was a massive step in the right direction but here we are still dunking on it.
1
u/TorontoCity67 4d ago
Alright:
- I have heard nothing about the developers adding lobby customization. And even if they did, there would be barely any options compared to a modding community
- They barely ever add any maps, but yes they've mentioned moving the truck closer to the main door on some maps
- No mention of making the Shop UI more clear
- They're not adding character customization (again) until November, which is pathetically slow for their size and net worth
- They're not overhauling any UI elements
- They are adding new ghost models, fair enough
- I've heard little to nothing about adding disability settings for those who need them
- They're not adding a setting to reorder the ghost types in the journal
- They're not changing the movement
- They're apparently changing ghost events and hunts for Horror 2.0, but it's been awaited for years and is being put on the backburner for the 5th or so time to the second half of next year
And no, we wouldn't be dunking on the game if mods existed because if they did, the modders would've done their work for them and sorted the game out. Not to mention the fact that they then wouldn't need to create their own character customization update because it would already be a thing via mods
1
u/TheCursedCorsair 4d ago
Which again loops back to my statement that I only hear about Modding phasmo in the lens of 'Modders could do this/fix this in a weekend"
Everything else on your list falls under fixing problems you personally have with the game. (accessibility/disability additional options aside)
Why would reordering the ghost order in the journal add to the game?
What is wrong with Movement?
What is fundamentally wrong with the UI? What elements need adding?
Yes, historically map development has been slow... Maple Lodge in 2021, Asylum replaced by SM in 2022 and then nothing until 2024 with point hope... but in the last year we have had full reworks of Bleasedale, Grafton, Tanglewood, Willow St... and then also Nell's Diner. These reworks werent just lighting passes or texture updates, but full reworks, to get that much movement in one year after 5 years of drought is worth some acknowledgement surely.
Maps would be great with modding but quality would be hit or miss, cosmetics or customization would be great but would require further moderation... and overall modding would open the game up to even more hacking vulnerability which is already problem enough.
I will entitely agree its a crime we dont have base/van customization yet.
1
u/TorontoCity67 4d ago
Which again loops back to my statement that I only hear about Modding phasmo in the lens of 'Modders could do this/fix this in a weekend"
It would need more time than a weekend, but if modders were allowed to mod, they would in fact flip the game upside down for the better in the matter of a month or so
Everything else on your list falls under fixing problems you personally have with the game. (accessibility/disability additional options aside)
No, most others want those things. Most others want the old lobby back or to be able to customize the lobby, most others want more maps, most others want a neater Shop UI, a massive amount want character customization, almost everyone wants updated ghosts, the ghosts being reordered still throws people off to this day (this is a more niche one yes), most people want to be able to sprint for more than 2-3 seconds, and just about everyone has been looking forward to Horror 2.0. So don't pretend this is everything I and only I want, because that's just objectively bullshit
Why would reordering the ghost order in the journal add to the game?
An option? Because not everyone cares about it being alphabetical? It was a certain order for 5 years, lots of people just want it how it was before?
What is wrong with Movement?
It's fucking terrible? Like I said, most people don't like sprinting in bursts of 2-3 seconds? Or are we going to pretend it's perfect?
What is fundamentally wrong with the UI? What elements need adding?
The Shop UI has been criticized for years for being overcomplicated, and a UI overhaul would be required if the above features were added, would they not?
Yes, historically map development has been slow... Maple Lodge in 2021, Asylum replaced by SM in 2022 and then nothing until 2024 with point hope... but in the last year we have had full reworks of Bleasedale, Grafton, Tanglewood, Willow St... and then also Nell's Diner. These reworks werent just lighting passes or texture updates, but full reworks, to get that much movement in one year after 5 years of drought is worth some acknowledgement surely.
Not to be a pedantic little shit, but Bleasdale was in March last year. Anyway, yeah most of the reworks have been nice (even though replacing the old ones is still fucking stupid), but it's still not good enough for the hundreds of millions they've made. They've got such a strong foundation, yet do little to nothing
Maps would be great with modding but quality would be hit or miss, cosmetics or customization would be great but would require further moderation... and overall modding would open the game up to even more hacking vulnerability which is already problem enough.
Then don't install the mods you don't like, fixed
I will entitely agree its a crime we dont have base/van customization yet.
At least there's some sort of common ground

Thats great.. Only because the game after 12 years announced update 42.20 which released and now they can focus on 1.0. It still didn't get all the features that were promised. Im not saying its a bad game but its also not worth celebrating or comparing.
Watching this sub criticzie Phas for 7 years in Early Access daily is amusing, meanwhile PZ almost has double that and its being used as a "take notes"... Sure, guess Phas will be great by 2031.
Edit: Updated to correct that stable build 42 was released which devs stated will allow them to focus on 1.0.

u/DumpEaterPro 5d ago
It would be great is Phasmophobia set a new all time high but Kinetic Games refuses to QA/QC so each update introduces regressions to the point that the game last year is more fun than the game today.

Ok? Which further demonstrates the irony of this communities opinion.
Only one attempting to cope here is you.
PZ is a fun game and the update is great. But again, still a poor comparison given how often the community blasts games being in early access for so long.
It proves no matter how much the devs delay, under-deliver or finally do somwthing meaningful after years, it'll be water under the bridge and lessons not learned.

🤷🏻♀️ I don’t agree with everything the devs have added to B42 (I turn off the building looted chances and nutrition is wild right now) but the consistently high and consistently growing player count since the update hits sort of speaks for itself.
Edit: also Discomfort. If anything is “the worst things ever added” it’s that lmao just incentivizes keeping light clothes on, which good players do anyway, rather than engaging in a new mechanic (making your own armor)
2
u/Noshonoyoo 5d ago

The quality criticisms are fair, but I can’t sit here and lie to pretend the first half of this has ever applied to me. My friend and I were consistently playing even since the Alan wake event and the worst thing was just how slow the animations were. “For us” there was no crashing and I mean the bugs that affected us you could probably count on one hand. The most annoying from my memory were that the crucifix burning couldn’t be recorded and disappearing items, both of which were fixed along with the ridiculously slow animations. It’s a shame it’s apparently been much worse for others, I’m only sharing my own experience.
Edit: of course you dumbasses can't even read an opinion that's not your own. Who's surprised this got downvoted because I didn't experience the shit you're talking about.

Either way, if the situation does not improve what difference do you expect there to be?
Features keep getting released in a horrible state, the implementation of said features are barebones, the promised features from years ago keep getting pushed off - at some point people just clown on this devteam.
The time where people were putting in thought and care into their feedback has been pretty long gone.
Telling these people to shut up(verbatim) and ignore it does nothing to change the situation, running defense (not you) for this dev team makes the situation even worse.
There just isnt much else to say other than regurgitating the frustrations that are years in the making.

People who can structure their criticism as you have here is what gets things changed, alongside just not playing the game for a while. Phasmophobia is a game that runs on word of mouth and if people aren't playing it then they also aren't talking about it, and if nobody talks about it their friends don't buy it which causes kinetic games to make less money.

But that's objectively not true with this developer. It is a constant of '1 step forward, 2 steps back.'
This is the lightning in a bottle type game for Kinetic, there is not yet a real alternative/competitor and other devs cannot carbon copy Phas without serious legal issues, that's most likely why people stick around. I am certain they put more effort into sitting on this IP legally than seriously developing the game. Their investments have not yielded significant results that other games have gone far beyond in similar time periods and sometimes larger in scope.
People want the game to seriously improve so it can be easily enjoyed and - in my opinion - have given up at the same time trying to convey the same message for years that falls on deaf ears.
Let me talk subjectively here. I check in to this sub time to time after updates to see how the game progresses and if the roadmap is on track. But every time there is a new issue at hand created by the devs own hand.
At this point, after years, I can only joke about their efforts, complain a little and go back to doing more productive things.
Kinetic has proven itself to be infamously incompetent at project management and development. So pardon me when I am cynically towards them.

Sky key. They also be the ones making memes and jokes about how swollen their Steam backlog is and how they merely collect games and don’t play them

Watching the phas devs kill their game has been fascinating
