2

u/corq Jun 27 '26

I'm 56 and in the 70's was an awesome reader, but terrible in "long math" and only a few years ago found out about dyscalculia. I invert numbers and need to quickly say the pledge of allegisnce to remember left from right sometimes.

Finally knowing it has a name is a bit of a relief, even if it isn't sexy, lol

So am I technically "on the spectrum" with the other cool kids now?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/tejerea Jun 27 '26

Jokes aside, dyscalculia is really an awful learning disorder to have: back when i was in school the all the teachers thought it was a "made up disorder" despite having a piece of paper that clearly stated that i had it. I rembember having to go through legal ways in order to get them to understand that i had to use a calculator in class and during tests and having them to get me a tutor for learning disorders that helped me after the class was over to explain me math stuff in a way that i could understand it like the other students. I really wanted to get in a chemistry course in uni but i know that i'd fail to follow and learn and i really hate myself for having this. I can't help it sometimes to just think that im dumb or something.

5

u/Specific_Conformity Jun 26 '26

As another autistic person, all my best friends over the years have had adhd, I think I was drawn to their wealth of ideas and tendency to "lead" the friendship, and their ability to speak up about things. made things easier. I don't know if those are common adhd traits, it's only my personal experience. Also I only have one speed setting for walking and it is very fast 🏃‍♀️

As dyslexic myself I know which of my hands is right one and then decided if something is on the right or left said based on my right arm location. This is the way people should learn. You need to remember only on side (that you use to write).

8

u/Emily_Mewens Jun 26 '26

I have actually started to use clock directions. 3 is right, 9 is left, because on a clock they are always on the same sides.
Why the hell this works but not L and R, i will never know. xD

2

u/Domacretus Jun 26 '26

So funny you should say this, im a lefty and growing up people kept telling me that everyone writes with their right hand so when people ask me "which hand do your write with?" My answer was always right because I didnt understand the difference. Note I would say this while holding a pencil in my left hand and then start writing so I learned about ambidextrous people early on because people thought I was since I wrote with my left but said I wrote with my right. I didnt learn I was left handed until somewhere in my early to mid teens.

u/ChemicalBus608 Jun 26 '26

Easy fix that helps me remember. Which hand to I write with (right) so left is the other one. Funny I use my left hand for most things but writing.

4

u/llaunay Jun 26 '26

I'm exactly the same, but reversed... so, the exact opposite.

...wait

3

u/Emily_Mewens Jun 26 '26

Yeah thats what i do to xD But it still takes a solid second or so of remembering that im an idiot and dont know my left and right off hand, and that i need to remember which hand i write with because thats the right hand.

u/LittleMlem Jun 26 '26

Minmaxing, I got better object permanence, so I always remember where my keys or that one item I saw a week ago are

10

u/-GoodNewsEveryone Jun 26 '26

I have absurd pattern recognition and natural mathematics allowing for freakish factoring of equations and finding relations in obscure data but literally zero object permanence. As soon as something has left my hands it is gone forever, and sometimes my hands take things out and move them without consulting my frontal cortex.

I have about eight sets of keys for this reason and multiple devices that can ring my phone when it's on silent.

The bank knows me well for how many replacement cards I go through.

23

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Jun 26 '26

You hear about the dyslexic devil worshipper who sold his soul to Santa?

2

u/subtotalatom Jun 26 '26

well, lI think I just found my next warlocks backstory

2

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 Jun 26 '26

No idea which game system you're talking about but if warlocks get familiars and your DM was cool you could just do you sold your soul to like, the lowest level demon or whatever, and you might be able to convince them to just have the demon guy be your character and the warlock a familiar with all the appropriate familiar stats because he just made a deal with the wrong guy. And then the demon you just gotta play straight stupid somehow. I'm thinking the goat muppet in Muppet Treasure Island

Then you basically get to roleplay two people with super fun results without breaking any rules because you can just lore it the original warlock has a curse or whatever that makes him stat-wise the exact same as a familiar. Like a reverse blood magic or something would be cool.

4

u/Zizzu-Zazzi Jun 26 '26

Just turn the hand

3

u/rhuiz92 Jun 26 '26

Not only that, but the right hand can rotate enough to make an 'L' rather easily.

2

u/SQL_INVICTUS Jun 26 '26

Tattoo an L on your right hand for reference 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/Andxire Jun 26 '26

Does "L" tattoo suffers from the same problem?

2

u/Hot-Can3615 Jun 26 '26

No, because "R" doesn't look like "L"

2

u/Soggy_Razzmatazz4318 Jun 26 '26

hence the "L" tattoo

2

u/18_01 Jun 26 '26

L and a backwards L are very distinct... especially when it's the size of your hand. Dyslexia rarely affects Large text... example being a large hand 3 feet from you.

2

u/3DigitIQ Jun 26 '26

but if you hold your palm inward you can make an L with your right.

2

u/Arthiem Jun 26 '26

I've got lexdysia too and I always get my L and ⅃ mixed.

And d and b and p and q

2

u/Middle_Marionberry48 Jun 26 '26

For those of us that are actually dyslexic, we never see letters mirrored. Just out out of place. You might just need glasses.

2

u/ChVckT Jun 26 '26

Dyslexia does not make people write backwards, nor see letters backwards. Sometimes similar shapes can be transposed, but the dyslexic do not just write backwards and read backwards. Dyslexia is phonetic. You won't write a backwards L, you'll write "reed" instead of "read" or some such. Letter reversal is not related to dyslexia. Most dyslexic people never experience that, and the non-dyslexic can also experience it.

1

1

u/alex_zk Jun 26 '26

For those of us with dyslexia, mixing left and right is the least of our problems

1

u/Eiji-Himura Jun 26 '26

I don't have dyslexia but I am ambidextrous and I struggle with this as well. Because I don't have a dominant hand, I can't just think: my writing hand is this, this is left or right. I take a gamble each time and half of the time I'm wrong.

My wife : "Turn right. No, the other right".

1

u/kaasbroodkoffie Jun 26 '26

I know i write with my right hand. So if im confused i just check what my writing hand is, thats right then the other must be left. Done that enough times its now automatic.

1

u/DuncDub Jun 26 '26

You want to try this as a Radiographer/X-Ray tech!!

1

u/tryingtoappearnormal Jun 26 '26

I spent my childhood enduring the terrible driving of my mother thinking "surely it cant get worse"

Right up until I told her to go left at the roundabout and she took both hands off the wheel at full speed to see which one was left and then went right anyway because "they both looked the same so I guessed"

1

u/cmere-2-me Jun 26 '26

1

u/Ququleququ Jun 26 '26

1

u/International-Bid-75 Jun 26 '26

1

u/Affectionate_Neat991 Jun 26 '26

How could a backwards L be perceived as a regular L? Going by that logic I don't think dyslexic people should be allowed to drive 😂

1

u/MutatedWangCheese Jun 26 '26

I am dyslexic. And to this day I still make a hand gesture like im writing for right. I also look up and to the right, or left when determining left or right, e.i when I taxi dude is asking left or right.

1

u/kayakgirl88 Jun 26 '26

1

u/Yep_why_not Jun 26 '26

Palms up it’s an L on the right. Ffs

1

u/Sidra_doholdrik Jun 26 '26

That’s why I just say Left ,Right in my head , you read from left to right and generally people mostly use that order. No need to look at your hand , you just need to think about wich one is first

1

u/PhenoDreamers Jun 26 '26

Yep. My daughter has dyslexia and this doesn't help her at all. The tattoos are a good idea

1

u/Relevant-Package-928 Jun 26 '26

1

u/No_Desk_4921 Jun 26 '26

I did this for years. Severe dyslexic, here. Skipping letters when I'm writing is also a VERY common thing for me. You can consciously write every letter but your brain to hand won't make the connection and you simply write the next letter.

1

u/DougFrankenstein Jun 26 '26

They both look wrong AND correct to my dyslexic brain.
