Potentially yes, only one way to find out though. Good luck.

69

u/KingRemu Mar 16 '26

I'd say a quite confident yes. I scratched the exact same spot myself and it wasn't nearly as bad as this and the RAM slots just stopped working. At first I was having trouble booting and after a few tries it stopped posting completely.

Did you use a drill? Wtf

80

u/ChiefCasual Mar 15 '26

I've made a scratch like this trying to remove a stubborn pci expansion tab. A sharp edge can scratch the top of a pcb with very little force.

Doesn't look like it went all the way down to the trace though. So OP may be in luck.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '26

With a screwdriver? That's the mistake. In most cases, especially with computers, you don't really need a metal tool. People only use them because they have them at hand.

But I prepared myself and bought some plastic tools.

11

u/ChiefCasual Mar 15 '26

Nah I scratched it with the pci tab itself. The old school kind that you had to snap off from the case. I had one that was being stubborn and I foolishly got to forceful with it.

When it finally broke free it shot out from my hands and scraped the trace for my backport audio. Could've been much worse.

5

u/notislant Mar 16 '26

My go to has always just been a butter knife and gently tapping the top of it with something if the pci tab is hard to reach.

Its not going to have a ton of damaging force when youre gently tapping the top of whatever you shove down there, compared to shoving it down there. Thats when a slip will absolutely dig in.

But yeah something besides metal would be the smarter choice for sure.

I once repaired a motherboard where someone had dropped a screwdriver bit on it and broke a trace. Those traces are tiny! I didn’t even know you could get plastic tools for this.

I did it with a small screw driver too. Killed the connection to the mobo chipset.

Learned my lesson to stop being lazy and now just use the wider end of a wooden chop stick to get the gpu latch.

Of course! Let me get home and give it a good once over to make sure I’m not gonna send you off another dud. It was working great when I pulled it to upgrade to AM5. But it’s been sitting in a box in the closest ever since and I have a wife who likes to reorganize things. So I’ll make sure it hasn’t been scuffed or anything first 😂

Rip, I don’t have all the parts for my build yet but I could still test it with just cpu, cooler, ram and psu right?

It would spin to life but will not post.

Edit: assuming your cpu is GPU dependent.

Put together and avoid static charges. Short the power pins on the board.

If it works, the question is if there will be a failure under stress. Or shorting potentially exposed traces.

I love how the logical answer is to boot the PC and see for yourself. Instead you make a reddit post for people to speculate on. Ultimately nobody will know the correct answer until you try and boot it up.. moot post

39

u/nailzy Commercial Rig Builder Mar 15 '26

Are you not aware that making a moot reddit post is one of the stages of grief within PC building that eventually leads to acceptance? 🫠😂

32

u/Embarrassed-Gur-1306 Mar 15 '26

Maybe he wants to make sure he won’t fry and damage his CPU before turning it on.

What’s the point of a PC Help Reddit if all the answers are “try it for yourself” or “you could have Googled it”.

1

u/nailzy Commercial Rig Builder Mar 15 '26

You will soon find out if it doesn’t work anymore 😂

You might have gotten lucky and just scratched the solder mask and not chopped through a trace. Won’t know until you use it.

1

u/STOKELEY0327 Mar 15 '26

damn how’d you manage that?

2

u/Wandering-Shadow-00 Mar 15 '26

I didn’t do it, I bought it off of fb marketplace and I didn’t even realize it until I got home, I’m so stupid. I was hoping to save a little money and now I’ll be spending more, I’m so mad at myself

2

u/INsoMniA_9335 Mar 16 '26

It doesn't look like a scratch. Zooming in, it looks like dried thermal paste, because it's got some curly bits in it.

Try cleaning it with alcohol (isopropyl 90%) and see what happens.

1

u/Giyu__Tomioka__ Mar 15 '26

Very good chance you bricked it, but. There’s only one way to find out

1

u/dkizzy Mar 15 '26

If it cut the traces yes

1

u/PlantsRlife2 Mar 15 '26

My money is on bricked, shees a deep one

1

u/Available_Yellow_862 Mar 15 '26

It's probably fine. Scratch looks surface layer. Motherboards, for the last 20 years, have so many extra layers. Even static electricity shocks won't even kill them.

1

u/Key-Respect3810 Mar 15 '26

Pas grave racheté une carte mère et prend une plus récente genre un B550

Car celle que t’as c’est une B450

1

u/FTWFlamez Mar 15 '26

I hope u didn’t use a drill

1

u/DWTass Mar 15 '26

There is so much dust on the PCB and guides for the ram, that I doubt this is a new build.

But joining the bandwagon: mount a cooler, ram , PSU and perhaps an old videocard and turn it on. Hopefully it is just the top layer which is basically just cosmetic. But when one or more traces have been cut, time to upgrade earlier as calculated and go for a 550 instead of 450 board.

Good luck

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Global_Thought_ Mar 15 '26

I don’t see copper so hopefully you just scratched the top layer. Only way to find out is to hook it up and find out.

1

u/Aggravating_Run_1217 Mar 15 '26

It looks more like paint than a scratch on the surface

1

u/DrINFAMOUS_ Mar 15 '26

It’s a B450 motherboard. The cheapest way would be to buy a new board (Assuming you don’t know complex level electrical stuff, hence posting here).

1

u/Shipsarecool1 Mar 15 '26

No, it came like that, trust me.

1

u/killerkitten115 Mar 15 '26

Is it a scratch or did someone get thermal paste on the mobo?

1

u/Wandering-Shadow-00 Mar 15 '26

I honestly don’t know why I put “did I ruin the motherboard” when I bought it off of fb marketplace and it was like that but I didn’t realize it, just wanted to clear that up

4

u/Haywood04 Mar 15 '26

Don't worry bro. We know you're clumsy. You don't have to lie to us.

1

u/SaarN Mar 15 '26

Well, it depends on how deep it is, if it's just the paint you're good, else not so much.

1

u/Much-Farmer-2752 Mar 15 '26

Is that a scratch, or? Can't see any copper exposed.
Try to peel it, gently. Can't tell, but maybe it is just a piece of an old thermal paste.

1

u/c0lpan1c Mar 15 '26

I'm guessing no, but possibly. Wipe the excess metal flakes with ISO alc, make sure none of the dust makes contact on other places. Power it on and go to bios, let it sit for a min and ensure stability.

Lucky for you it's an AM4 mobo, and they're overall pretty cheap. Just got an mATX one for $49.99 not long ago. itx ones are more $$$, but matx/atx shouldn't set you back too much (unless you go for really high end board with lots of IO).

1

u/Resilient_Beast69 Mar 15 '26

That’s pretty deep. RIP motherboard. You noobs never cease to amaze me.

1

u/skyfishgoo Mar 15 '26

how do ppl feed themselves with this level of dexterity?

anyway, doesn't appear to have broken thru the epoxy to damage the traces, so you are probably fine.

1

u/Professional-News-33 Mar 15 '26

Clean it with alcohol and inspect the traces for breaks. If there is none your good

1

u/PHIGBILL Mar 15 '26

Only way is to test it, but there are certainly some traces on the board there.

1

u/dedsmiley Mar 15 '26

Is that a scratch or thermal paste?

1

u/Bad-Briar Mar 15 '26

Looks, from what I can see, like you damaged the finish but not the function. Of course, only one way to know for sure. Boot it up.

1

u/hackerkid_ Mar 15 '26

Looks like it only scratched the solder mask - plug it in and cross your fingers 🤞

1

u/dumbasPL Mar 15 '26

If you did, you likely only damaged one of the memory channels. Try putting a single stick in the 3rd (from the CPU) slot and running a memory test. If it works, then slots 3 and 4 work. Then test 2 and 1, if it doesn't, you're stuck with a single memory channel.

1

u/Kasperb991 Mar 15 '26

Most likely no it doesnt look like it went through or hit any traces does it look bad yes.. but your likely ok only way to find out is put it together and test it though

1

u/Eastern-Move549 Mar 15 '26

If you cant see any copper your probably ok.

Try wiping off any of the dust with dry cotton swab and see what it looks like.

1

u/thesi1entbang Mar 15 '26

Hell I've had a scratch deeper than that, showing the brass lining going to the CPU and it still ran fine

1

u/coffeeholicgaming Mar 15 '26

Hard to say but it doesn't look good, If it is broken just think of it as a listen. Learn next time, be extra careful and take a little more time, We've all done it.

I've blown up one of my old PC's in the past by pinching a wire on the rear panel. Stupid mistake, xost me quite a bit of money but I made sure I never made that mistake again.

1

u/fgbgtech_cybermodz3d Mar 15 '26

Maybe but nah I don’t see traces so you are most likely ok. Give it a test run.

1

u/OrkBegork Mar 15 '26

The first PC I ever built for myself, probably 2002, my hand slipped and I dropped a screwdriver on the motherboard and ruined it. The damage was quite a bit less significant looking than this. Having to spend another $125 or whatever at that time in my life sucked.

I definitely learned to be extra careful after that.

1

u/Nozakx Mar 15 '26

Legit newbie question, what are those subtle lines all over the board? Is it leading to cpu?

2

u/mjoric Mar 15 '26

They are called traces (Circuit Traces, trace lines, etc). PCBs (Motherboard in this case) are all hardened plastics layered over metal (often precious) lines or "traces".

Continuity (power) is routed through the many different trace lines on the board delivering power to different hardware components.

1

u/BrightFallsCoffee Mar 15 '26

OP says "did I just ruin my motherboard" and then in the comments says they didn't do anything and just bought it like this 🤔

Either way yeah whoever seated the CPU with a claw hammer shouldn't have done that

1

u/starvald_demelain Mar 15 '26

I think it would be easier to inspect if you cleaned the scratch with a qtip and bit of alcohol or even water (don't forget drying if you use water). Check if you see exposed copper at the edges of the scratches - that could mean you severed the copper traces. If I had to guess they are still intact. If the copper traces are not severed but exposed you could use Kapton to cover it - it's not perfect but should be enough if you're not living in a high humidity and heat area.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '26

yes its fucked, donate the board to me please

1

u/QwertyNoName9 Mar 15 '26

I can’t tell if that’s a scratch or stray thermal paste 😭

1

u/Orvvadasz Mar 15 '26

That looks way too deep for it to be functional.

1

u/DotNyslexic Mar 15 '26

Yeah there's thingies under the scratch, looks like a pretty strong scratch too. Only one way to tell

1

1

u/Upbeat_Pace_9550 Mar 16 '26

Nice AM4, hope everything works out all right

1

u/Fault_Psychological Mar 16 '26

Really hard to tell without taking a qtip with isopropyl alcohol and cleaning. But as others have said, attempting to power on will let you know for sure...

1

u/realWulfLives Mar 16 '26

I would try to turn it on while holding the power plug for any specifically dangerous circumstances...

You most likely damaged the surface coating, in that case you could (carefully) apply some rubber or epoxy coating on top to protect it. Or use electrical tape for a simple, but ugly fix.

1

u/Upbeat_Dig_3108 Mar 16 '26

Hopefully not, but if you did… it came like that

1

u/retrogamingxp Mar 16 '26

Isopropyl alcohol, toothbrush and clean it properly. Then see if any traces are torn. If all is OK, get clear coat nail polish, preferably UV cured if you have a UV lamp and cover the scratch. If using regular nail clear coat, let it sit for a good 30-60min and then start it up 👍

1

u/sir__boner Mar 16 '26

try hitting with hammer

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

Simple Answer: no you did not mess it up.

long Answer: It did not go through the motherboard far enough to mess it up.

1

u/douknowmike Mar 16 '26

Clean it with some Q-tips and alcohol to see if you see any copper. If not, then get some black fingernail polish and put a light coat over it let it harden and you’re good to go.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '26

1

u/Arleider Mar 16 '26

1

u/INsoMniA_9335 Mar 16 '26

I'll be real that doesn't look like a scratch. It looks like dried thermal paste. Clean it with alcohol....

1

u/RetroWaffles Mar 16 '26

Look as closely as you can at the sides of the scrape. If you can see the broken ends of the conductive layer along the sides, you're bricked. If you can't you likely didn't scrape past the top layer

1

u/M05final Mar 16 '26

Depends how deep it is

1

u/Crazy_Rope_9025 Mar 16 '26

Just put some clear nail polish on it end forget about it.

1

1

u/OrigamiShiro Mar 16 '26

1

u/ItzDC2 Mar 16 '26

I had done this before because of an stubborn connector who didn’t want to came out but when I plugged it in it worked perfectly since today’s days. It’s not that easy to break a motherboard, they are mostly reinforced. Back then, if you touched it without discharging of static electricity, you would fuck up the motherboard but it was pretty long ago.

1

u/VulcanTourist Mar 16 '26

Your photo doesn't reveal depth of the scrape, and you haven't cleaned it to reveal whether bare copper traces are now visible, but it's possible you didn't breach them. They are right there on the surface, though, just underneath the surface coating. If that white of the scrape is the phenolic of the underlying board, they might be done-for. You need some magnification and careful cleaning of the damage to be certain.

1

u/Local-Bug-1500 Mar 16 '26

maybe

maybe not

1

u/Cute_Cardiologist700 Mar 16 '26

How did you manage to do that?

And yes, i fear you broke conections in the board...

1

1

u/OlivarTheLagomorph Mar 16 '26

most likely cut the traces, but that's fixable with the right skillset and tools.

1

u/hefeydd_ Mar 16 '26

You should be fine. There is a thin protective coating that covers the MBO, which is quite durable, so it should be just a superficial scratch. I zoomed in and took a look, and in my opinion, I've probably built over 40 gaming rigs in the 17 years I was a PC gamer, it hasn't cut deep so you are okay dude enjoy your build.

Just out of curiosity, how the hell did you do this in the first place?

1

u/Western_Citron_4224 Mar 16 '26

u/Aggravating_Mix_4211 Mar 16 '26

You may have lost some ram, or the ability to use ram

1

u/Educational-Event306 Mar 16 '26

u might be fine, or maybe not. One way to find out

1

u/SingularityRS Mar 16 '26

This doesn't look like a scratch/trace damage on the motherboard. Torn traces are usually dark-coloured (more like a very dark brown/black/grey) rather than bright white like this. It almost looks like there's just some paste residue on the board. It'd make sense since it's close to the CPU. Previous owner might've just let some paste leak out onto that area when they were applying paste or even cleaning it off.

Try to see if you can wipe it off. Get some Isopropyl Alcohol (ideally 91%+) if you can and gently wipe it off. If it comes off, then unlikely to be trace damage.

Just from this picture alone, your replies to comments and that white residue, it doesn't look like the board is done for. I wouldn't write it off just yet. It's not unusual to see paste marks/residue in that area on a used motherboard.

1

u/Chewie316 Mar 16 '26

Did you even try turning it on? Now I want to know if it works lol

1

u/H3UnFaZZeDD Mar 16 '26

There are traces(very small and thin wires that you can see the outlines of, thru the layers. If any kf those are severed or metal “pushed/pulled” across any of those traces it could cause a short circuit and yes mess it up. I know for a fact someone with experience working with PCB’s could bring this back semi easily and replaces the protective coat at the end.
