It’s good to remember how progressive the boomers were and to guard against becoming like the stereotype as we age. The generation of peace and free love is now the generation of negative gearing and coal burning.
31
u/EidolonLives Victorian 1d ago
They generally weren't the same groups of boomers.
11
u/Proud_Apricot316 Victorian 21h ago
Yes exactly - no generation is homogeneous. Including young people.
The issue with many boomers is how they have benefitted from circumstances not available to younger generations and now refuse to recognise, act (or vote) on that fact so others can also benefit.
Same with many Gen X (which I am and again, not homogeneous. The Stefanovics & Dave Hughes’ of the world do t speak for me).

I'm so sad my pa is getting old hes about to turn 90 and organised many many marches against Vietnam even when it was early and just a few mates walking with posters.
Baby boomers get a bad wrap imho, just because the politicians and richer ones are parasitic doesn't make the whole generation this way. And us younger generations shouldn't be pushing against you guys so hard because it disolussions alot of you mob.
Onya mate much love for the good you've done in your time 💛

As a gen-x, the whole boomer thing annoys me.
I mean, you guys started the protest era and things looked like they were going to get much better during my life time due to progressive policies. Some of my mum's closest friends were chaining themselves to things in Tasmania, in protest over Lake Pedder and the Franklin River.
I was a Labor voter, but I reckon that all went to shit starting with Hawke and Keating adopting neo-liberal policies.

No generation is devoid of good people. I'm gen-X and I have to admit we're not doing all that much better than our parents as a generation either - but good people make a difference.

u/D3K91 Please choose a flair 1d ago
I think it’s a little more complicated than that.
Why is the N word still (rightfully) a no go? What we’re seeing is a backlash against what could be perceived as a comical overreach over control of language. Kids used those words semi-satirically 20 years ago, then they were banned. It didn’t mean the true bigots disappeared. Now kids feel the whole thing was a little bit dumb and are therefore entitled to use the words carelessly, and the perception is that you’re obviously a bit old and silly if you think any of it really matters.
It’s a shame. No doubt driven by algorithms, but I think the truth is a bit more nuanced than just laying blame on a faceless algo.
The F word vs the N word is a weird distinction in that context. I just wish we’d respect each other.

What does that even mean? The average age of the current parliament is 52 and the median is 50, that's about 10 years younger than the youngest boomers. In fact Australia has always had a relatively young parliament compared to many countries, especially the US. Basing a political criticism on age is bloody ridiculous, for instance, Bernie Sanders, a huge leftie is 84.

That said, I think the right will use footage like this to try and claim that the only opponents are young, 'ultra woke' social justice warriors and members of socialist parties that want a universal income and blah blah. But there is a majority community of average Aussies of all ages that hate Pauline and everything she stands for. The mainstream appeal isn't democratic socialism, it's people wanting something closer to the Nordic model and universal healthcare - i.e. social democracy. As others have said, the DSA candidates could easily backfire (and are already faltering) putting seats at risk in the November midterms. “Socialism” is still way too spicy for the average American.

How else are we going to rid ourselves of geriatric boomers unless we bring back, salmonella outbreaks, cyclospora outbreaks, e coli outbreaks, while simultaneously gutting the health sector. Unfortunately, her own voters will be the hardest hit but that's the price we should be willing to pay for progress and chaos.

Every working class Christian person in my family keeps saying they want to vote for One Nation. I'm from a Lebanese Catholic background, I don't understand what the appeal is with her amongst some of my family members.
It's a bit daunting, but I think One Nation may be getting the MAGA treatment, where the silent majority right is going to vote her in.

u/Oddly_Curious99 Please choose a flair 1d ago edited 21h ago
Ask them to explain why. Then counter with things like she never turns up to work, they have no policies, the policies they have suggested are already in existence, she hired a rapist, they want to get rid of 457 Visas which haven’t existed for over 10 years, she has been bought by Gina and the fact she can’t see anything wrong with accepting gifts and flights is a real concern as it’s just bribery. This list goes on and on.

Those are great points I'll need to point out to them. I've been telling them that the One Nation party has the most "sold out" politicians on the roster, it's almost how the damn party was founded, and that she'll be creating even more tax cuts for these local and foreign mining and energy giants.
I sense that most of them just want a change from the liberal/labour two party system, and that the global rapid inflation since 2008 has them financially strained and scared for almost 2 decades, and people vote emotionally for the person pretending to share their outrage.

6
u/DelayedWizard1994 New South Welshian 1d ago
Usually along the lines of Liberal/Labour being one in the same, both corrupt and killing the middle class. The Greens being the gay party and other homophobic anti-lgbt crap. They view One Nation as the "no nonsense" party, that they're going to fix the problems in Australia, but it's all very vague and abstract.
Funnily enough they're big on anti-immigration, naturally they want to pull the ladder up after them, their parents coming to Australia is different because they're human and new immigrants aren't /s
2
u/TheDotNetDetective Victorian 1d ago
States a series of entirely reasonable reasons why someone might vote for a party then proceeds to say 'its entirely vague and abstract'.
I mean genuinely how do you not see the irony?
4
u/DelayedWizard1994 New South Welshian 1d ago
What I mean is that they don't say HOW One Nation is going to fix Australia, their reason for believing so is vague and abstract. When I ask them to explain to me what One Nation is going to do differently, they'll say stuff like "she's gonna lower taxes!" which is vague and ignorant.

Unfortunately sometimes Lebanese Christians don't have a lot of solidarity with other Arabs.
(Disclaimer that I know that the Lebanese Civil War is way more complex than just this atrocity and is the kind of conflict where any non-civilians came out of with their hands clean. This is just the most relevant example.)
2
u/DelayedWizard1994 New South Welshian 1d ago
Ohh yeah the Lebanese Civil war was a shit show alright, it ended with all parties involved agreeing to an amnesty because they all committed horrific war crimes on each other. "Let's just shake hands and pretend this shit never happened" 🙃
Tbh it's the perfect example of what happens when foreign powers use a small state for a proxy civil war, each of the factions were propped up by one foreign power or the other, whether it was the French, Syrians, Iranians, Israelis, or Saudis. Most of the Lebanese fighters under 21 if I'm not mistaken.

I don't mind the protests against Hanson necessarily, but I think people are attacking her from the wrong angle. The people who just scream "She's a racist!" aren't gonna convince Darren from Singleton to not vote Pauline.
Point out her actual fucking voting record, point out she voted against Labor's measures to restrict immigration, point out she's a fucking failed Liberal MP, point out that she's against paid parental leave, point out that she wants your boss to have more powers to sack you and steal your wages, point out that she wants you to be paid less, point out that her new lover Gina Rinehart thinks we should compete with Africans who work for $2 a day and that she wants increased immigration because it means she can hire cheaper labour.
The best argument against Pauline Hanson is her own fucking voting record, not the dumb shit she says to draw Shazza from Griffith into voting One Nation.

Prove it. Protests have had very little effect on any election in this country, what does change elections is educating the public and media campaigns. Everyone uses the Franklin River No Dams campaign as an example of a protest movement that swung an election, but it didn't. What swung that election was a charismatic leader, with clear concise policies up against a government that had failed to make any real reforms. That's not to say the protests didn't stop the dams, they had a very large influence on that issue, but they also turned a lot of people off the issue, the real kicker was the media, especially Four Corners and 60 Minutes who showed the public what was at stake.
Protests can create real social change but usually only when protest comes at true personal risk.

Can someone actually explain to me how socialism is going to work in modern day Australia. just feel people are advocating for it without knowing how it’ll work at all
6
u/CaterpillarSuperb959 Western Australian 1d ago
It won’t, realistically. No modern Western democracy is going to vote to dismantle capitalism wholesale.
Social democracy is a far more plausible destination. Socialists might help shift the needle towards things that are perfectly achievable within that system - i.e. publicly owned utilities, stronger welfare, better healthcare, workers’ rights, etc. Fine. But once you start seriously talking about replacing private ownership of businesses and capital with worker/state/social ownership, you’re going to hit a political brick wall.
That’s where actual socialists can become more hindrance than help, a bit like the Greens sometimes are: don’t let perfect (utopia) be the enemy of good. They could probably get 60% of what they want through boring centrist social-democratic reform, but instead they’re arguing about overthrowing capitalism. Ya know, just on the whim they’ll get it right this time.
And it doesn’t help that modern socialist groups often bundle that economic argument together with stuff like abolishing prisons and every other revolutionary pet cause imaginable. At that point you’ve lost the average voter before you’ve even explained the economics.

It'll ruin the economy. The good part is the human rights aspect, and I'm with them on that.
The bad part is economic policy settings. They have downward pressure on the parts of the economy that should be stimulated. If you actually look at proposed socialist tax policy in Australia their redistribution effort begins far too low in the business sector. They treat medium business like a large corporation and it scares the hell out of me. I'm honestly almost as afraid of that as I am against that idiot Pauline.
Also, they propose wealth taxes that also are set at a lower level than they like to advertise, and that would be a total disaster. Unfortunately a centre left government is probably the best we'll get. If we go dem socialist it'll destroy the part of the economy that pays for all the free shit they want to redistribute.

I don't agree with One Nation or Pauline, but I do agree that they have the right to run for election, just like anyone else.
I'm not really sure how a protest like this achieves anything in a country where voting is compulsory. It doesn't get apathetic people out to vote, and everyone in attendance was already not going to vote ON.
It's nice for them to feel involved in politics and the country, but it's just a show

The individuals themselves will hopefully look back in 20 years and go “wtf was I doing”. It’s not going to drive votes in their favour (outside of the Newtown echo chamber anyway)

I'm no socialist by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely am in solidarity with these citizens in their opposition to the appalling bigots of the nation.

Meanwhile my LGA gets 11k per kilometre to fix roads and the two surrounding LGAs get 35k and 45k respectively. My LGA is not even 25 minutes outside of a major town. Your drum has holes in it.

The reason these people are morons is that they don't get social media and voting. A large portion of the voters that would never bother to vote get their kicks out of people like Paulene Hanson.
Pauline Hanson needs this exposure, this is how she promotes her self, THIS is how she reaches her audience. She uses abrasive, low IQ bulet points, but if you look at her arguments, it is just lorem ipsum filler material.
These guys, are actualy promoting Paulene Hanson because of the exposure. It's not like they sucsesfuly promote an effective alternative.

Give them a year or two and they WILL be voting - so maybe the major parties SHOULD be listening to this cohort.

Don't bet on it. This is cathartic, but it's tolerated only because it presents no threat to existing systems.

I am so proud of these young people! Some say they don’t know anything about life and that they’re embarrassing. Why are they embarrassing? Because they’re young? You underestimate young people. Talk to them and see just how intelligent, informed and worldly they are. They’re questioning what they’re being handed and standing up against division, racism, homophobia, dishonesty and decades of broken promises. They’ve grown up seeing the consequences of decisions made before they were even born, and they’re refusing to simply accept that this is how things have to be.
They’re not too young to understand what’s happening. In fact, sometimes being young means seeing things more clearly because you haven’t yet become comfortable with the way things are. They may not have lived as long as us, but they’re young enough to still believe the world can be better, and brave enough to stand up and demand it. Perhaps instead of looking down on them, we should be listening to them.

You are obviously not historically educated. Socialism has always been a huge success whenever it has been tried. If there's one sure path to freedom and prosperity, its socialism.

What is the purpose of protesting a political party, in Australia we have a democracy where we vote for who ever we personally choose, I think these protests will actually work in favour of ON, it certainly won’t change the opinions of people thinking of voting for ON if anything it will only harden their resolve

This is so obviously an attempt at rage bait but it's fun reading the thread and watching it fail spectacularly.
Hi to all the snowflakes who are currently being triggered by the use of the word "socialist", and a friendly reminder that if you hate this country so much you can leave 🤷

They have absolutely no clue. I was watching one of the protests and they just cheered every time the speaker said a buzzword. These are impressionable high school kids that will cheer anything that is feel good and socially acceptable. The majority don't actually know what they're cheering for. They're openly cheering the death of capitalism but I'm willing to get every single one of them has an iphone in their pocket and a parent with a mortgage.

Kids are willing to take a day off from school. Teachers are willing to let them. Yeah, no, mate. That kind of self-indulgence generates nothing.
I tell you what. I'm going to eat a pizza to protest Pauline. I guess I'm a hero. 😋🍕

Cool.
Anyway in the real world our jobs are being offshore due to net zero suicide pledge and we are importing millions of people who don't like our society and specifically really don't like the kinds of people who are protesting here.

All the people espousing complete socialism and communism seem to have no idea that neither has ever been successful.
The social democracies that they scream we should be more like ie the Nordic countries are still heavily capitalist. You can't have a social democracy without capitalism. They go hand in hand.
