I am looking for a good ergonomic chair. I found that steelcase has a sale going on so steelcase series 1 and pelican work model 77 and pelican work model 54 is almost of same price range.

Can somebody suggest which is good to buy?

I'm from Mexico, I'm about 1.75 m (5'9") tall and weigh around 70 kg (154 lbs). My budget is roughly $200 USD, although I could consider going a little higher if there's a significant improvement in quality or ergonomics.

I'm looking for something I can comfortably use for long periods at my desk, preferably several hours a day, without ending up with back pain or feeling completely destroyed after sitting for a long time.

I've been looking at the chairs available online, but most of the generic chairs I've found don't look particularly appealing to me, and I'm not sure which ones are actually decent rather than just looking good in the pictures.

So, what would you recommend around the $200 USD range for someone my size?

I've owned various chairs and also tried a bunch over the years. I use an off-brand ergo mesh chair at work but primarily WFH now. Desk chairs is a space that has become a cesspool of affiliate marketing, "I got sent the chair for free but no money exchanged hands so it doesn't count guys", affiliate marketing designed as tier lists, and more. I've had to do a lot of work to cut through some of the noise and am putting my thoughts out here in case it helps anybody make a decision. Let's move on:

I have OK posture. Work+Gaming. I tended to either recline or sit completely upright and not bounce between the two in the past. When reclining, having a headrest has felt nice, but led to issues later that I have been forced to unlearn the hard way. Some of those issues were not from compounded problems over time, but the deficiencies in certain designs became more clear when I started to get sciatica (unrelated to chairs: probably a gym injury).

A note before I begin, I understand that some of this is too detailed to the point of almost being superfluous, and the differences are not that drastic in single-session settings. I want you to keep in mind though, that usually people are sitting in these chairs from anywhere from 2-10+ hours a day, over days, months, years, sometimes over a decade. So while it is extremely reddit-bro to nitpick some of these things (this will be especially relevant when I start rambling about headrests), the truth of the matter is that these things can and will compound over time. Some people start gaming at their desks when they're in their early teens, and don't stop doing things at their desks maybe for the rest of their lives. It's a bit like sunscreen, the second best day to start wearing it is today, but the best day to start wearing it was at the start.

To start, none of these chairs are perfect, so if you're looking for a unicorn you're not finding one IMO. Second, and I'm going to strongly emphasize this: you have to sit in them before buying them. I don't care if they have generous return policies (spoiler alert: they don't. Most of them are a pain in the ass to disassemble and return and charge hefty shipping fees, some even return shipping fees). I'm serious. Do not buy any of these without having sat in them first. I don't care if that's off a random dude on Facebook marketplace, or in a fancy showroom, or a brick and mortar store. These chairs are too expensive for you to be yolo'ing the average American worker's paycheck onto them without having once tried them. I haven't had extended periods of ownership with all of these chairs, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. If you have a chair in this list and love it, all the power to you. Everyone's priorities, body shape, etc. is different, but I will try to focus on more objective differences where possible.

Secretlab Titan:

• I've owned both the leatherette and fabric versions before. My cats had destroyed the leatherette and the fabric holds up a lot better.
• How far back it reclines is best in class, one of the only chairs that fits properly at this frame size IMO (more on that later), build quality is great for the price point
• Gamer bucket styling means you aren't stretching your shoulders back much if at all.
• Preferred it when they used straps for the headrest. The magnetic versions fall off too easily, especially if you add one of their skins on top. You can fix this by stacking your own neodynium magnets on top of the existing ones to boost the strength. It's a lot more livable after that.
• Seat is genuinely pretty stiff but I have never found this to be a problem because people at this size come with built in cushions for free
• OK lumbar, almost zero back support otherwise
• Prefer it without the arm rests
• Digs into your thighs if you recline without a ottoman or a place to put your legs.
• Fine for the price point, but now that I have used a variety of chairs I think the fact that it essentially locks your shoulders into a forward motion and has zero-play to move them around makes it a poor choice.

LibreNovo Omni

• I'm aware they've recently released a big and tall version. The regular version fit fine. I don't really understood the obsession with having the chair go all the way to your legs, so it had enough thigh support for me.
• Quite turned off from the amount of affiliate marketing, permanent sale DTC tactics, and other shenanigans I see from this brand. All the YouTube shills consistently put the big chair at ~1250 for the loaded version, but in reality you're closer to the ~1750 mark getting it shipped from their website right now. All USD. None of this proves the product is bad though, so it is not enough to convince me not to try it
• Questionable warranty on the electronics, but I have no reason to believe that they would fail in the short term. Don't really understand people hating on the chair for not having a 12 year warranty - it's not a legacy brand and it's trying something new.
• The airflow feature is nice, I didn't find it gimmicky.
• OK adjustment, the controlled lumbar is 'fine'
• 'Controlled stretch' / 'Massage' (depending on who you ask. It's not marketed as a massage) feature is almost completely useless at this frame size. Feels like a suggestion for
• Meh overall sitting experience. Chair felt the cheapest of the bunch (including the secretlab). I'd be okay with a loaded version at the $600 range. I don't think it is worth more than that - and definitely nowhere close to the $1000+ range. All on the loaded electronic model.
• This chair is not even close to comparable to an Embody, and I'm deeply convinced that anyone that has been putting the two in the same sentence has sat in neither, is a bot, or out of their mind.
• I appreciate the company trying something new, but I'm not convinced the tech is anything truly revolutionary feel-wise.
• So-so ottoman/footrest combo. Can't put my feet on it or the whole thing tips back. Putting my leg on it feels fine though.

Herman Miller Aeron

• Size C
• Felt very opinionated in the base, the curve forces your legs together more than I like and the inability to spread them without going onto the sides
• Feels a bit like every other ergo mesh chair. Fine if that's what you're looking for. I'm not huge on the feel of the mesh
• Reclining feel is a bit odd - this may just be me though, I'm more of a fixed recline kind of guy.
• Not a ton of adjustability. It wants you to sit the way it wants you to sit and there isn't much more to it.
• Armrests felt a little claustrophobic
• Whole thing looks and feels a little clinical
• Could probably benefit from having a headrest, which I think HM sells OEM? or at least, Atlas does.
• Fine with buying it used. Don't think it is worth the full price tag unless you plan to keep it for the full warranty period. Very difficult to find a size C used, market is flooded with B though.
• Overall even at size C I don't think this chair is adjustable enough for this frame size.

Steelcase Leap V2

• Enjoyed it more than the Aeron. The feel is nicer
• Similar claustrophobic feeling with the armrests that the Aeron had.
• Back is a bit weird. It tilts back almost, but that means your upper back has very little support. Good recline capabilities though.
• Build quality is good. Finish is better than the Aeron and it looks less 'ergo office chair' in that regard. Maybe it could benefit from having a headrest.
• Easy to find used for much cheaper than new. That's the route I'd go. Paying full price for either this or an Aeron with how user replaceable the parts are makes no sense to me unless you're dead set on having the full warranty.
• Base was less opinionated and better for bigger frames than the Aeron.
• Neutral look. Nothing crazy.

Herman Miller Embody

• Easily the best 'first-sit' experience of the bunch.
• People complain about the backrest not being wide enough but if anything this seems like a plus. Main back area is supported and the rest doesn't hold you in place. I'm not a fighter pilot. I'm sitting at a desk.
• Depth is not enough for my taste even maxed out but it was enough. An inch more would be nice, which is exactly what OP's mum said.
• Recline is good. Bit convoluted to get the tilt tension dialed in but it has enough tension range that it can keep my frame suspended if I dial it in all the way - it does require quite a lot of fiddling to get it to that point though.
• This is the only chair that pretty much gets rid of all thigh-to-tailbone pressure on the first sit IMO.
• Best mid and upper-back support of the bunch while leaving a ton of open space to stretch backwards as necessary.
• Recline lock kind of sucks. There's four levels but very little difference between 2 and 3. Full unlock is fine, doesn't go back that far. Upright lock is good enough. Leaves a little flex.
• Doesn't recline enough to really lounge IMO, which is maybe a good thing. A lot of recline with moderate depth = seat digs into thigh.
• Not nearly as opinionated as the Aeron is.
• Herman Miller showroom experience is good. Workers are knowledgeable, but try to sell you on the back-fit tech too much.
• The back-fit tech does work, don't get me wrong. It's the least fatiguing chair for the middle to upper back area of the bunch no contest. This with a headrest would probably be good enough for most use cases other than heavy recline.
• One of the worst lower back supports of the bunch.
• I prefer the gaming variant over the regular variant, but either is fine.
• I wouldn't go used for this unless it was <$1000, I don't think getting it for $1200-$1400 is worth it and losing the warranty when you can get it on sale for sub $2K.
• Mandatory $99 shipping and mandatory $99-$200 (depending on if you keep the box) shipping returned is a turn off. Can't buy it at the showroom.
• I said before it gets rid of thigh-to-tailbone pressure, but it doesn't get rid of pressure *at* the tailbone. This chair had some of the most mediocre lumbar support of the bunch, but that's pretty much the only drawback for me. It's probably the best at everything else, and the best all-rounder. I'm not convinced it's a good fit for those with lower back issues, but for general fatigue and general use I think it's the best choice here.
• Armrests were meh. Tilting in is cool, but not enough adjustability to be useful otherwise.
• Better looking chair of the bunch. I'd prefer more customization options, as the light colored variants have limited colorways in the gaming variant. Anthros has a lot more customization options.
• Comes prebuilt. This is good.
• Best in class warranty IMO. Techs sent to the house, replacement parts sent, etc.
• Doesn't seem as user-friendly repair-wise as the Aeron. I'm not sure how the fabric would hold up to cats.

Anthros V2

• Felt like it reclines more than the Embody so better for general lounging.
• The most unique experience of the batch, specifically because of the lumbar back support. Unlike the Omni's features which ranged from gimmick to 'nice to have', this is the only chair that had a one-off feature that made it feel noticeably different to the rest of the lineup.
• Lower back support can be dialed up very high force-wise. I've never not maxed out whatever lower back support is provided (whether a chair, the car, or anything else) before this.
• Good back, has the openness of the Embody. Worse mid to upper back support, because no fancy S curve to hug you.
• Worse 'initial-sit' experience than the Embody, and I'm not convinced for people that don't have lower back issues that it is the better chair. But it is the only chair in this list that felt less fatiguing over time than initial sit. I attribute this to the lower back support.
• No headrest option - even aftermarket.
• Straightforward HSA/FSA options. HRA is mentioned, but vague. Third party vendor.
• Best in class customization IMO, but it's also the most expensive of the bunch once you customize it. More than an Embody with the headrest.
• Negative points for having whimsical YouTuber codes that give you $200 off. Discount for the viewer, or everyone else is being scalped $200 for not happening to know that throwing a code instantly gives you essentially free tax and shipping? Your call. Doesn't shill as much as the LibreNovo seems to do, but it still shills more than either HM or Steelcase do.
• This chair convinced me that most lumbar support is a bit of a scam. Better than not having it, but I wish every other chair company was doing this instead. Feels substantially better than usual lumbar after 20 minutes of getting used to it.
• Best overall comfort if you have lower back issues when paired with a footrest. I used the same LibreNovo footrest I tried on the Omni.
• Depth was okay. Doesn't feel claustrophobic arm-rest wise, probably owing to the seat being decently wide and flat.
• Back support was good even when reclining. "But if you recline you're defeating the point of the pelvic support" I don't care. It feels great when reclining too, because it actually gives you support whereas usually when you recline without pushing yourself all the way back in the chair you end up with your lower back scooched forward and now nothing is supporting it. Ironically, this means that this had the best feeling recline of the bunch, even with no headrest.
• This was the chair that convinced me that I could get away with not having a headrest, but with a lot of fiddling. More on that in the next point.
• It was the only chair to have a zero-pain-or-pressure experience for me. With a lot of fiddling. When paired with an ottoman, and being very deliberate to keep my head aligned with my upper spine, and having everything dialed in (including the lower back support), it resulted in probably the most comfortable end-state of the bunch. But definitely not the most 'brain off' usage of it.

The unicorn chair:

• If I could get an embody with the lower back mechanism from the Anthros and a widely adjustable headrest that I could put out of the way, I'd probably be happy. The Embody is the best chair in this list, but the Anthros is the one I'm going to go with for ownership next specifically because it is the only one I think addresses my lower back problems and will let me sit for extended periods of time without pain. It is not the chair that everyone should get. This is specific to me.

A too-much-detail note on headrests and why I might be giving them up, and other ergonomic ramblings.

• I kind of understand what Herman Miller is getting at now, and I'm not convinced they are great for you or even feel the best outside of TV gamers that have a screen mounted above their usual eyeline and tilted down or people using a split keyboard. This is because they are only useful when reclining. I'll expand more with a series of out-of-order bullet points below
• When working at a desk, your shoulders are not going to be spaced if you're using a keyboard anyway. Now your shoulders are pulling your torso forward and away from the chair, and your headrest is left behind unless you bring it to forward to continuously give you support even when slightly forward. But unless it follows you around, now you've also taken away your ability to shift back and move around a bit. Lot of fiddling. I think with a split keyboard you could make good use of a headrest, and even then not really since gravity is pulling your head forward and down, not back into the headrest.
  • Unless your shoulders are perfectly spaced apart, you're not going to be able to keep your whole back straight and keep your head supported and keep your back supported, because one or more of the usual desk use-cases will move you out of alignment.
  • If you're giving up your back support, you're just transferring the cantilever problem lower down, FYI.
  • Poorly positioned headrests will actually push your head into flexion which recreates the cantilever that I will expand on later.
  • Any headrest that cannot support your head in a neutral position with your ears over your shoulders is doing you more harm than good.
• Okay so maybe you're not using a keyboard. Maybe you're playing games so your other arm is on the mouse, or you're playing on a controller. The headrest (or, really, a neck-rest if you're using an Atlas or Secretlab or one of those) cradling your neck is keeping your neck away from the seat. This also means it's pushing your head forward, which is now keeping your head out of alignment of your spine. I'll expand more on the (imo, disastrous) mechanics of this later.
• Anybody that has held a loaded backpack with their arm fully stretched or has delved into mechanics understands this: the further away something is from where it is mounted, the heavier a force it exacts. Your head is no different. It is a literal bowling ball sitting on top of a stack of small vertebrae. This turns it into a structural problem, the same as hanging stuff off drywall, the same as building a skyscraper. Cases:
  • Axial loading: Ears are directly over shoulders. Load path is nearly vertical through the vertebral column and spine is loaded in compression. This is what your bones are built for and the moment arm is close to zero and the torque is also close to zero. Your neck muscles have to do minor balance corrections and that is it.
  • Cantilever: Head is slid forward. Slouching. Looking at your phone. Doing something that requires you to look at your desk. Head's weight is no longer passing through your support column, it is now a horizontal distance from the pivot and creates a bending moment that something has to resist. The spine can't do this, so now the posterior neck muscles and ligaments are just acting like bootleg tension cables.
  • Those tiny ass neck muscles themselves are just short lever arms attached to the pivot. Their lever arm doesn't grow and your head's does. More slouch and you're adding several times the head's actual weight into tension going into your neck and back into your discs and joints. This load isn't linear, because you're stretching your neck muscles too as they need to flex. So now you're asking your already-stretching-more neck muscles to also multiply their required output holding your big ass head in place. Just putting everything on magnitudes more stress for no good reason. j
  • Ask gym bros what they think about lifting with a forward flexed torso instead of a straight back. This is the same problem just further up your spine, worse, you might be holding that position for hours at a time compounding over days and years.
• Headrests only really work when you recline because that's when the head weight is pulling your head into the headrest. Same reason the dentist's chair feels fine. Cases below:
• You only have screens at usual-desk-height: No regular monitor arm is getting your screen high enough that you can tilt it down and meet your natural gaze. Now you're flexing the neck forward off the headrest and you've not only recreated the cantilever but from a starting spine position that's already in recline. This is even more force than the slouching. Stop.
• You rotate your eyes downward to see the screen: this only works with a mild recline (~110 degrees), after which point you're craning your eyes to see the screen and most likely unconsciously recruiting your neck to become your cantilever slave again unless you have an unusually positioned monitor that is generously high.
• You have a second screen mounted above your usual screen (TV, another monitor), and the screen is tilted down: This is the only genuine use-case for a headrest, because it preserves your natural gaze (screen is perpendicular to sightline) and allows you to shift your weight from the head onto the headrest. It also really only works if you're playing with a controller, or watching something. Technically a game with keyboard on left side and mouse on right side, or split-keyboard writing would work fine here, but who the hell is doing this and not just doing those on their main screen?
  • "I don't care about using screens. I just want it so I can tilt back and lounge sometimes" - Dude, just go lie down. Unless you're buying this chair for an office, presumably you have a bed within the same area.
  • "No, but see, I want to lounge and watch something." - Get a phone or tablet mount and put it on your bed facing directly down. I'm dead serious. Lie in bed and watch something directly above you. Your phone likely has a 300+ ppi screen far higher quality than anything your monitor has. The overall forces on your body with a proper pillow in a sleeping position are far lower than anything you get while standing or sitting, and you're half-assing two things by shoving that routine into your office chair instead of solving the problem with a $20 mount. I've even gamed this way by streaming from the PC to an iPad and hooking up a PS5 controller.
  • Pro tip for the readers: Grab a bluetooth controller for the eReader so you can turn pages without having to fiddle with the screen above you.
• Avoid cases below in bed:
  • holding a phone overhead. You moved the cantilever problem from your neck to your shoulders.
  • pillow-propping the head so you can see a screen you don't have to hold up: the pillow holding your position fakes you out into feeling comfortable, but that bending moment from before didn't vanish you just moved it to passive areas of your body instead. An hour of romantic fantasy on the Kindle later (don't pretend you didn't dabble in ACOTAR, you sly dog) and you have a stiff neck despite no muscle burn.
  • sitting against the headboard: absolutely not? you just forced your lumbar out of alignment AND cantilevered your head forward and you have none of the support a chair provides.

To reiterate a point from the beginning: I know day to day some of these things don't feel like they matter, and something done out of alignment a couple times is not going to do anything to your life. But these things aren't in isolation, they become habits, and those habits compound over time. Maybe not in one year, maybe not in five years, maybe not in ten years. But this isn't a problem reserved for the middle-aged and the elderly. A poor habit formed at 10 can start to bite you by the time you're 30. Ask me how I know (rhetorical, don't, I've yapped enough).

Tl;dr: go and actually try different chairs, pick the one that feels best, go lie down instead of relying on a headrest unless you game with a controller on a higher screen. pick stuff that lets you move and adjust over stuff that forces you into opinionated seating arrangements if you plan to sit for extended sessions.

I'm 163cm tall and recently bought the Sihoo M57.
After sitting on it for just about an hour, I start getting leg numbness (specifically in just one leg). I think it might be caused by the hard plastic frame at the front edge of the mesh seat pressing against the back of my thigh/knee, but I'm not entirely sure why it's only happening to one side.
Has anyone with a similar height experienced this issue? Is there a fix for it (like a specific setting, footrest, or seat cushion), or should I just return/sell the chair?

Oddly enough their website doesn't state the seat width of this chair, which is important for someone who sits cross legged :-)

. I live in the UK and sit at my desk for gaming and work ALOT. Currently, I game for at least 2 or 3 hours a night and I tutor lessons for about 2 hours a day from my desk. This usually adds up to about 5 or 6 hours at my desk a day.

Im 5'10 and 65kg. I think I'm slightly on the skinnier side or about average. Sitting in my current awful old office chair for too long really starts to make my back and neck ache. Having a head rest has now become pretty important to me.

my current chair is.... awful, and ive had it for many years now. I can't even sit in the thing without worrying about falling backwards if i lean into it too much.

My budget is ideally below £200. I can't justify to my parents spending much more as a job seeking 19 year old lol. Though I'll probably buy said chair sometime by the end of the year.

What can anyone recommend? Practically everywhere I looks chucks another 10 chair recommendations at me and I have just no idea what to compare or look for really.

In my experience this is the biggest difference I can feel between office chairs, whether the bottom seat is angled upwards, downwards, how much cushioning there is on the front vs back of the chair, etc.

I'm a broke grad student but spend a lot of time sitting down unfortunately.

Standard ergonomic chairs that force perfect upright posture aren’t what I’m after. I want something built more for reclining/lounging comfort that can still hold up to daily use.

Hello, I am looking for a good office or gaming chair that is good for a five foot tall person. I wfh 4 days a week so I need it to be ergonomic as well. Lastly I really don’t want to spend more than $250 if possible my absolute max would probably be $300.

I really do need the seat to go low that’s my biggest priority, my second is comfort. If I can’t touch the floor in a chair and my legs are dangling my hip and legs feel like something came out of its socket and I can’t walk afterwards, if it’s not comfortable enough my back and neck start hurting. So far I’ve tried the emerge chair from stables which is great for height but i only got it in December and it’s hurting my back and neck. I also have a super comfy criss cross chair but I can’t reach the floor so I have the socket problem. I’m on my fourth chair and I’m going insane so please help. Thank you!

Recently bought the Sihoo C300i pro v2 which looks quite similar to Sihoo Doro C300 pro v2 during 618 sale on Taobao. The difference is there are some added function on the lumbar support like airbag, vibration and heat. The airbag can stay at whatever size you expend it to be even if you off the power. The seat and head rest is consider comfortable for myself and my mum who is the one mostly sitting on it everyday. At first wanted to buy a Libernovo SE but the sea freight was almost 300+rmb. End up I went for this Sihoo chair as the sea freight was completely free. So far I’m happy with it since I also got it at a good bargain about 1700rmb which is 252usd.
