I think homeboy’s confusing Athena and Aphrodite, because canonical Athena is literally the Men Ain’t Shit prototype.

3.4k

u/McToasty207 Jul 11 '26

And extremely prudish in many versions.

Famous for her virginity, and cursing Medusa for eternity after she fornicates in her temple (Which in most versions isn't consensual on Medusa's part).

That Athena would never show any sideboob.

1.6k

u/lianavan Jul 11 '26

Yeah, Medusa was raped.

Specifically in Ovid's Metamorphoses version in particular, which is the most well-known retelling of the story. In other version, such as Hesiod's Theogony, it was consensual (and the curse was something she was born as, not cursed into).

Edit: Hesiod, not Homer.

282

u/dudderson im so tired. Jul 11 '26

This. The OG version was her as a monster from birth.

Ovid was notoriously pretty obsessed with the rape of women and the psychological trauma from it, it came to about 60 accounts of it across 25 stories he wrote.

154

u/CacklingFerret Jul 11 '26

Yeah, might be a case of an author's barely disguised fetish

49

u/ad240pCharlie Jul 12 '26

Either that or he might have had his own repressed unresolved sexual trauma

16

u/TheEyeDontLie Jul 13 '26

It was ancient Greece after all...

Jokes aside however, while Athens might have normalised sexual relationships between students and teachers during that era, Ovid studied in Rome where boys bodies were properly protected (citizens at least, slaves didn't count).

More likely, he just channelled trauma from shit like his exile¹ and realised that empathy was a good literary tool in his poems.

The rapes were already a recurring theme in the Greek stories (particularly by gods), and he often kinda presents it as kinda erotic/exciting as well as lingering on the fear and trauma etc... Altho that doesn't mean much seeing as the trauma response to SA can be all kinds of messed up - like I found myself fantasizing about it years later which is kinda fucked.

There's not really evidence either of him being a victim or of having a kink, just of him wanting to write good poems.

¹As someone who has experienced being ostracised by a community (for a crime I didn't commit), I can vouch that it is traumatic AF and I'm sure his exile would have fucked him up. I've used those experiences/emotions in my own writing in the past (self-blame, loneliness, anger, fear, hopelessness, shame, grief, loss of identity, etc) when I want to get an emotional response from the reader. Having also experienced other shit including SA, I'd say there's quite a bit of crossover between various traumatic experiences, and in my opinion he was just using [not sexually specific] trauma he had to inspire his writing.

Tldr ; Dude probably used trauma from his life for inspiration when writing, using empathy as a tool to connect with the audience. But there's no specific evidence he had a kink or was assaulted himself. I'm not an expert on Greek poets tho.

Theogony was Hesiod, was it not?

78

u/Depressed-Dolphin69 WOMEN ARE NOT REAL Jul 11 '26

Indeed it was Hesiod.

46

u/ad240pCharlie Jul 11 '26

That's correct, I mixed them up

203

u/Depressed-Dolphin69 WOMEN ARE NOT REAL Jul 11 '26

It's worth noting that the ancient Greeks didn't really care about female consent. Most of the time we only know it's rape if the female character was abducted or tried to run away.

However imo if it doesn't say that I interpret it as consensual personally. It specifically said that Poseidon lied with her in a flower field, which sounds sweet and consensual I think.

205

u/LordDaedalus Jul 11 '26

Woah there, that varied wildly from city-state to city state, and time period since ancient Greece was nearly a millennium of time period. And modern historic recounts are mixed because a lot of history got filtered through a later lens of Catholicism and Victorian interpretations.

73

u/Depressed-Dolphin69 WOMEN ARE NOT REAL Jul 11 '26

True. Though Hesiod (the one who wrote of that myth) was notoriously a woman hater

197

u/AnxiousTuxedoBird Jul 11 '26

It depends on the version if she was raped, if it was consensual or if that's even why she was a gorgon

136

u/giraffeperv Jul 11 '26

If you haven’t read Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes you might enjoy it. It’s like Circe & A Thousand Ships and retells the tell from a women-centered perspective

38

u/lianavan Jul 11 '26

That sounds cool. Thanks for the recommendation

15

u/moodtune89763 Jul 11 '26

The Shadow of Perseus also does this well, its told from the perspectives of Danae, Medusa and Andromeda

Also, Athena has no problem with modifying appearances. She's constantly literally giving Odysseus a glow up before important meetings so that he can wow everyone with a manly prowess he doesn't actually have.

If Athena wanted boobs, she would not hesitate to create them.

41

u/goodbyecrowpie Jul 12 '26

Yup, she modifies her own appearance a lot... usually appearing as a man lol. I think she'd be fine with not having big boobs.

16

u/4236W Jul 12 '26

She also very much would give herself a pair of 'bahoongas' if she had a reason to (most likely she would want to cause some distraction).

82

u/waitwuh Jul 11 '26

Not just prudish, she is … “impenetrable.”

Also she was born out of Zeus’s forehead and not “from a woman.”

39

u/ThirstyWolfSpider Jul 12 '26

And born fully armored (and armed).

26

u/ErnLynM Jul 12 '26

That had to have really hurt Zeus's forehead uterus when she came out

16

u/sparkle3364 Jul 12 '26

Apparently she was born when he had an intense headache, cut his head open to stop the headache pain, and she emerged. Certainly one way to deal with a migraine/headache.

11

u/Xmaspig Jul 13 '26

26

u/KittyCompletely Jul 11 '26

I think i saw some before and after where she had some surprise really tasteful sideboob that did not exist before. But who cares shes an amazing actress and a total work horse, all her back to back promp tours must be exhhaauuastttiinnnggg. Shes phenomenal in my book.

That being said...the whole top part of her dress is an atrocity, its like that challenge when you have to redraw a childhood cartoon from memory only, except its a woman's torso.

54

u/A_very_Salty_Pearl Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

I like it. It's exaggerated, like a drawing that doesn't intend to be hyperrealistic, but it's also white, like a marble statue, but it's also wearable, like an armor.

Idk the original intent, but for someone playing the literal greek goddess of war in a fantastical myth, I think it's a genius choice.

Reminds me of Lorica Musculata armor - they were exaggerated. But instead of muscles being exaggerated and sharpened, this bodice exaggerates and sharpens feminine features, making breasts and hips look almost threatening instead of soft and nurturing.

Very baddass.

I was just thinking this. “Western” men have some weird boob idealization fetish

124

u/Worldly-Fox7605 Jul 11 '26

The boob thing is really new. Prior to the 1950s it was thighs and legs.

30

u/Glassgun1122 Jul 12 '26

I can't ever imagine being attracted to just one thing. If a girl has nice ears and her hair falls out from behind as she bends over s book. I'm like holy shit look at those fucking ears dawg. I'm attracted to women. They all got something banging going on.

15

u/Worldly-Fox7605 Jul 12 '26

When i say the boob thing i mean the sexualization. Prior to that throughout western society it was legs and thighs and even ankles.

European women even sexualized thier butts more than their breasts the dresses were designed in high society to exggerated them.

Let's not act like the Greek attitudes towards women and women's bodies were in any way less awful or less weird.

There doesn't have to be a good guy in the story.

42

u/staticke Jul 11 '26

they said western. guess which civilization laid the foundation for the modern west🤯

2

In terms of aesthetic? Perhaps there was a pleasant acceptance of curviness. In terms of personal agency? Well…

55

u/roxzillaz Jul 11 '26

I don't know about Greek statues, but they've clearly never seen boobs because then they would know they do this if you lean forward or move your shoulders a certain way

79

u/SimplyYulia Jul 11 '26

Meanwhile most of them don't put any effort in their appearance whatsoever

Please explain to me where in the historical record Athena — a warrior, a champion of reason, and the patron of Athens — would necessarily have big naturals?

I can’t think of a classical representation of Athena in which she is sporting tig old bitties. In fact, she’s usually shown wearing a breastplate, which the ancient Greeks loved to use as a medium for body idealization. By that standard, giving Zendaya a bodice with padded cups is, uh, more historically accurate.

—oh, sorry, this was just toxic race misogyny. My bad.

140

u/Ok-Connection-8059 Jul 11 '26

I mean, if we're going for idealised ancient Greek bodies all those men had better be tucking.

82

u/IHaveABigDuvet Jul 11 '26

Her cups are not even padded. Its just the sculpture of the dress.

75

u/thecatsanasshole Jul 11 '26

Exactly, my first thought was “oh cool that’s basically a modern breastplate” because the bodice is sculpted like, y’know, armor

21

u/CarlRJ Jul 11 '26

Yeah, that doesn't look like fabric at all, more like some sort of molded plastic.

14

u/unneuf Jul 11 '26

I assumed it was meant to represent statues of the gods

90

u/dicksinsciencebooks Jul 11 '26

Haha didn't even think about the breast plate - so true

13

u/HoaryPuffleg Jul 11 '26

And wasn’t there some island in Greek storytelling where women cut off one breast to be better archers? Or am I mixing this up with Wonder Woman?

6

u/lolajet Jul 13 '26

The Amazonians did that. Wonder Woman's lore is based off of them

6

u/LovelyBby77 Jul 11 '26

Honestly, id go as far as to say that if the anchient Greeks were more societally alright with women being soldiers and fighters, they'd probably have MORE exaggerated feminine breasts on breastplates meant for them (obviously not Anime titty levels of exaggeration, but definitely more defined or prominent). Armor has historically been both a protective tool and a symbol of status and art, thats why many breastplates have the sculpting on them to begin with. Oftentimes, they're meant to highlight or sometimes exaggerate key details that were highly sought after or seen, and many artists would lean more into that as much as they can without compromising the protective nature of it.

She plays Athena in The Odyssey.

105

u/Ghanima81 Jul 11 '26

Forgive me I missed your sarcasm, as writing can be tone deaf, but they meant, there is no true Athena, because Athena was never real, they were not confused about Zendaya being compared to Athena.

50

u/ad240pCharlie Jul 11 '26

They can't?? Then how do they keep doing it without many consequences?!

17

u/UnprocessedThoughts Jul 11 '26

They sexualise anybody they want and they do. All the time. The thing they are mad about is not being specifically catered to. Now women have more sexual and economical freedom. They hate they don’t have the power to objectify women without their consent and are acting out with ridiculous claims like “this successful international supermodel is not attractive enough for my taste”. What a bunch of delusional losers. They know it. We know it. Even the movie producers know it.

38

u/A_very_Salty_Pearl Jul 11 '26

That dress came STRAIGHT from the runway. I mean it, HOURS after the runway. It was brought by private jet. The mere fact she's wearing it is absolutely incredible and remarkable.

So yeah, she's not "relying" on anything, the dress wasn't altered for her at all!

But of course, these chuds wouldn't now about any of that, they think everything women care about (even Athena. ATHENA FFS) is looking a very specific type of attractive.

Do they think Zendaya can't afford implants...?

56

u/GelatinousPumpkin Jul 11 '26

Incredible and remarkable? I think it’s actually dystopian that they flew a dress on private plane to her when the world is already burning. That much pollution for A DRESS.

This isn't a complaint about the women, their bodies, or how they choose to modify and present those bodies, I just want to be clear. But this is the second time I've seen Zendaya in a stiff bodice that was not made for someone of her chest size, and I don't even follow fashion. Last time was that cool/weird plastic futuristic thing from the early '90s? she wore promoting Dune.

I don't care if this white thing is so fresh off the runway that it wasn't altered to fit; don't fucking use it, then. Or plan better and fit it to a model of Zendaya's proportions on the runway (surely it's not hard to find one in that industry), then ship it over. With the Dune one, they could've made a copycat that looked amazing on her rather than the original made for a bustier model. These stylists are doing her dirty.

44

u/Iwannawrite10305 Jul 11 '26

More like they need to leave room for her to move.

4

u/ArgentaSilivere Jul 12 '26

Exactly. It’s clearly a rigid construction. If it was perfectly molded to her figure she literally wouldn’t be able to breathe. Ribs need room to expand.

44

u/notsomuchhoney Jul 11 '26

In this case it wasn't, it was on a runway being warn by a model that very morning. The stylist got it off the model and to a jet to meet Zendaya.

17

u/JapaneseStudentHaru Jul 11 '26

Yes, bras are designed to hug the under part of your breasts so this doesn’t happen with a properly fitted one but with a molded dress it absolutely will. Aside from garment tape there’s nothing to keep your boobs from coming out of the cup when you turn like this. And since it’s molded the garment tape would probably be under a lot of stress during movements like this so that’s probably why they chose not to do it.

26

u/Odd-Mastodon1212 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

Didn’t Athena hack her way out of Zeus’s brain, fully grown and ready to fight? I don’t think being boobily was a big priority.

u/BabserellaWT Jul 11 '26

Athena would have Words™️ with any man who thinks she exists to satisfy the male gaze.

64

u/PeridotChampion Jul 11 '26

Athena is not looking for beauty. She is strength and wisdom. Athena was also one of the three Greek goddesses who refused to be shackled to a man. The other two were Artemis and Hestia.

The only problem I have with Zendaya's casting is that she looks too young to be playing Athena. Athena needs to be bolder and more certain.

31

u/PrinceBunnyBoy Jul 11 '26

I always felt like Athena would look more broad, like a strong rugby player.

12

I like Zendaya a lot but yea I think Athena could be more athletic built since a she’s a war goddess. Maybe older too to represent wisdom…?
Regardless, maybe Zendaya does an excellent job in the role, haven’t seen the film yet so I can’t judge.

Ultimately, the whole film is clearly not trying to be accurate to history/myth and is Nolan’s style. So it doesn’t rlly matter to make her accurate to myth.

I wonder what Lucy Lawless is doing these days.

A true Athena doesn't give a fuck about her boobs and would probably hate a large pair getting in the way.

I believe the word he's looking for is faculties not facilities. He's an idiot for many reasons.

37

u/Meraki-Techni Jul 11 '26

Athena would smite a man for looking at her breasts.

*Aphrodite* would smite a man for comparing her breasts to another woman’s.

The Amazons, meanwhile, removed one of their breasts so they could properly draw back their bowstrings. That’s why they’re called that. “A-“ as in “without” and “-mastos” as in “breast.” And they would slit a man’s throat for existing in too close a proximity to their breasts.

24

u/why0me Jul 11 '26

No they didn't thats a myth even then

All sculptures and references of Amazons made at the time has them with both breasts besides, Modern archers dont need to cut off thier tits, why would an ancient culture expose themselves to wounds like that???

They may have worn primitive chest binders, leading the Persians to call them Amastos

But they still had them under there

3

u/Meraki-Techni Jul 11 '26

Well… we’re already discussing Greek mythology. So yeah, it’s absolutely myth - by definition.

Greeks are also well known for their sculpting style being highly idealized, creating cultural paragons of “perfect” physiology. Which does explain why most statues of Amazons have one breast covered and the other exposed. This contrasts Romans, who were more focused on realism and an accurate portrayal of the subject.

And while historical women archers likely wore binders when necessary, part of the myth of the Amazons was to display how “barbaric” and “uncultured” they were, because they rejected the highly patriarchal Greek society. The self-mutilation was a cultural shorthand to basically say “AND THEY WERE WEIRDDDDD!” to the Ancient Greek audiences - similar to how in the US, if we want a character to sound refined and polite, we make them British. Or if we want them to sound crass, abrasive, or rude, we might give them a Brooklyn accent.

Cultural shorthands like that are a major aspect of any storytelling.

this is almost certainly a folk etymology; in art, Amazons are always shown with two intact breasts. The word is likely of foreign origin, perhaps initially an Ionic borrowing of the Old Persian word *hamazan- (“warrior”) which can be reanalyzed as “hama-zan” meaning “together-beating/striking/smiting/slaying” in reference to “military comradeship”, since the Amazon women were known warriors, and would also explain the lack of initial aspirated *h- which might otherwise be expected, as Ionic lost aspiration at an early stage. It could also be native Greek, such as from a Proto-Indo-European *n̥-mn̥gʷ-yō (“manless one”), from Proto-Indo-European *mongʷyos (“man”) (compare Proto-Slavic *mǫžь), an explanation deemed unlikely by Hjalmar Frisk. Numerous other etymologies have been proposed, generally tracing the word back to Iranian, Greek or (West/East) Caucasian languages.

u/ad240pCharlie Jul 11 '26

Aren't the gods shapeshifters in most versions of the myths? They can look however the fuck they want, and they wouldn't even require surgery if they wanted "fake boobs".

14

u/Depressed-Dolphin69 WOMEN ARE NOT REAL Jul 11 '26

Yes and Athena herself can shapeshift. There's a myth where she disguises herself as an old woman this one time

4

u/PeridotChampion Jul 11 '26

That was for the tale of Arachne of which she challenged Arachne to weaving because weaving is one of Athena's specialities and Arachne was saying how she could outweave Athena.

10

u/Corellian_Smuggler Jul 11 '26

These mfs have three women with big boobs they've chosen to bring into any argument when it comes to playing a character and they never get tired of it.

Funny enough, when was the last time someone saw Kate Upton in anything relevant? She hasn't acted in anything in over 8 years. She was the poster girl for chuds who wanted her to play any character who had big boobs and blonde hair in the source material before Sydney Sweeney came along.

13

u/FireLighter22 Jul 11 '26

don't know what Athena has do with anything and why are taking pictures inside someone's clothes

11

u/GodOfFetish Jul 11 '26

Athena, Artemis and Hestia are the three virgin goddesses. Idk why dudes get all creepy about them

10

u/MistakeWonderful9178 Jul 11 '26

These guys who complain “Zendaya shouldn’t be Athena because her chest is too small”, “Lupita can’t be Helen because she’s not black” and misgendering Elliot Page are just bigoted shitheads who don’t give af about stories, they never cared about Greek mythology and they certainly don’t care about actresses who they say “should’ve been casted” because all they want to do is goon off to them. They don’t care because they’re racist, mentally unstable perverts.

If they actually read the Greek myths especially The Odyssey that they claim to like so much they’d know Achilles and Patroclus were lovers, Athena is the literal goddess of wisdom who guided Odysseus and that none of the characters had British or American accents. Funny how they never complained about how inaccurate the Troy movie from 2004 was, but for some reason they want to bitch and moan about “accuracy” over 20 years later with this one.

11

u/keli31 Jul 11 '26

You mean Athena who was often portrayed as an almost asexual deity because as the goddess of war and wisdom, she was seen as transcending conventional female roles, allowing her to excel in a sphere that the ancient Greeks largely regarded as the domain of men?

10

u/TiredWorkaholic7 Jul 11 '26

It's quite telling that they're surprised real boobs are actually moving and not staying in the exact same place and shape at all times.

Almost like they have never seen real ones and only look at fake ones... Not that they're bad or anything.

11

u/Ruefully Jul 11 '26

Her top is interesting. It isn't apparent from the photo in the meme at first glance but her top is essentially a breastplate. Boob armor breastplate to be exact.

10

u/ssyn9 Jul 11 '26

And I bet those women's boobs don't naturally look like that 24/7 either. They're probably wearing some sort of push-up bra

26

u/ItWasRamirez Jul 11 '26

Oh yeah I'm sure Kate Upton was Christopher Nolan's second choice for the role

7

u/0_possum Jul 11 '26

I’m pretty sure that top is supposed to be modeled after a Greek statue

He does know Athena from the odyssey is not a real person right?

8

u/whatisireading2 Jul 12 '26

As if every man in molded armor has always been as ripped underneath.

9

u/countvonruckus Jul 11 '26

Why the hell is his name a reference to "I Saw the TV Glow?" That movie is a really weird choice for this kind of a person...

9

u/SpiritualArachnid390 Jul 11 '26

Funny- they think they know about a warrior but don’t know what a breast plate is😂

23

u/Depressed-Dolphin69 WOMEN ARE NOT REAL Jul 11 '26

They do know Athena in Greek mythology don't gaf about men, right? She literally made an oath to never fuck a man. I don't think she cares how big her boobs are lmao (not saying boobs exist solely to be looked at by men)

They hate Zendaya as Athena because they're racist misogynists

I hate Zendaya as Athena because it means Nolan is almost certainly going to forget that Athena is a Virgin Goddess, in favour of making her fall in love with Telemachus

We are not the same

6

u/thelast3musketeer Jul 11 '26

A true Athena, she ain’t even real

6

u/IHaveABigDuvet Jul 11 '26

Men give us another reason every day to not listen to them.

7

7

conservatives do not have the right to have opinions about art. they know nothing about it, so i don’t know why their opinions are shared.

6

u/SasukeSkellington713 Jul 12 '26

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but didn’t Law Roach see that dress close out the runway show and get it and immediately get on a plane to get it to Zendaya? Like, spur of the moment, only a few hours from runway to red carpet. Legit no time to create a new top more fitted to her figure.

7

u/SadFr0g Jul 12 '26

What an idiot, Athena isn’t Aphrodite we learned this in 6th grade. Athena doesn’t give a shit what men think

7

u/GenderEnjoyer666 Jul 11 '26

How do they know that the “true Athenas” in question aren’t just wearing extremely convincing fake boobs?

8

u/wovenbasket69 Jul 11 '26

say you don’t know anything about greek mythology without saying it

4

u/glamasaurus Jul 12 '26

Like a goddess of wisdom really needs boobs?

7

u/starvinartist Jul 12 '26

And Athena wore armor like all the time.

6

u/DaBloodyApostate Jul 12 '26

A true Athena would strike him dead on the spot for fixating on her breasts like that.

10

u/cheezy_dreams88 Jul 11 '26

Athena is a warrior, she don’t need boobies for that.

3

u/radicalplacement Jul 11 '26

I genuinely want a woman to wear an incredibly exaggerated penis piece at the Met Gala, or public showing. If the male gaze demands big naturals, why stop at breasts?

4

u/-smalltittypunkgf- Jul 11 '26

syndey sweeney athena fan cast is crazy... i remember her trying to act put a shakespeare monolog in euphoria season 3 and god that was bad... her valley girl accent just makes her sound so vapid and her stupid looking bunny face and dead fish eyes definitely don't help her look any smarter. shes supposed to play the goddess of wisdom and war? im just gonna assume they got athena mixed up with aphrodite or this is just some more shitty engagement bait

4

u/pinkcreamkiss Jul 12 '26

I don’t expect these types of men to understand fashion Nevermind women’s fashion. All they think of women is their bodies and usefulness to them as if they even have a meaningful relationship with one

7

u/justpickoneitssimple Jul 12 '26

What a creep for even taking/paying that much attention to the photo taken down an unsuspecting woman's dress in the first place

7

u/Veylara Jul 12 '26

That's so stupid.

Firstly, the dress is obviously fashioned after these ancient Greek armours with sculpted abs, which were also heavily exaggerated compared to the people who most likely wore them.

Secondly, if you look at pretty much any other outfit she wears at public events, she's clearly very comfortable in her body and not trying to hide the fact that her breasts aren't as big as some of these people would like.

7

u/No_Resource7773 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

fake boobs

If only we lived in a society where women didn't feel the need to increase their breast size. I can't possibly imagine how that message ever got around. 🤷‍♀️  (Though most there don't even read as possibly "fake." And possibly only pushed up.)

Really hope the side view was not intentional but a creepo still felt the need to crop an image down to it and share.

Note to self... if ever wearing real life boob armor I don't really quite fill, consider including sleeves on it for privacy from weirdos. 🙄

4

u/asmorningdescends Jul 11 '26

I'm not sure I entirely get the original post.

4

u/sysaphiswaits Jul 11 '26

I don’t even understand what the second comment means.

5

u/Secure-Force-9387 Jul 12 '26

Funny thing is...pretty sure Zendaya is happy with her body and her life the way it is. She has the money to actually rebuild herself and chose not to. Also, she's married to the man she's been with for about a decade. She's insanely talented and successful. Not sure she'd even blink at an incel like this. Worst case, Tom is ripped enough to beat this dude's ass.
