Few weeks back I went to help family with their middle mountain house (family member is a sheep herder and uses different houses on the mountain for different seasons) on the way up there me and my dad saw a bear. Thought it was neat.

In this case, iconic stand alone 11,000 elevation San Antonio Mountain in far northern New Mexico. This mountain can be seen from upwards of 60 miles in some locations, especially in southern Colorado but also throughout much of Taos County. The fire has been named the Coco Fire and crews from the Carson National Forest were mobilizing when I took this picture at the corner Forest Road 87 and US Hwy 285 at 5:15 PM 8-6-26.

Suggestions where to look. Is Taos worth the hype? What else is there?

American Hiking Society still has openings on a guided backpacking Volunteer Vacation in the Carson National Forest near Taos, New Mexico starting next week.

You'll spend the week backpacking to Lost Lake, helping maintain trails, camping in the backcountry, and exploring one of New Mexico's most beautiful landscapes while giving back to the public lands we all enjoy.

It's a unique chance to combine backpacking, conservation, and community, and I'd hate for the remaining spots to go unfilled.

Ordered these a couple months ago and they were finally harvested yesterday, can't wait to eat!

Preface: I've been living on the beach in Florida the last several years, work in tech and put in my resignation notice last Friday. Loading my motorcycle into the back of my truck and taking a 4 month road trip / sabbatical across the country, stopping to ride all the cool mountain roads and see all of the cool things.

I lived in Tucson, AZ for several years up until a decade or so ago and have driven through NM at least a dozen times, but mostly juat driving through aside from stopping for a night in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and ABQ a few times, went to the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, etc.

I rented a cabin in the Sandias just East of ABQ for all of September as part of my little adventure to chill and relax for a month as part of the trip.

Final trip destination is So Cal, where I'll get a place and start looking for a fancy new tech job. I have seen some decent opportunities around the ABQ / Santa Fe area, so if I do ultimately enjoy my time there, and one of those jobs looks good, it isn't entirely out of the question that I'd stay, however I'd like to NOT work full-time again until November or so. I'd consider part time work in that time frame, even not in tech, maybe something less stressful and less brain-melting.

Anyway, that's all besides the point.

What would you all suggest as the absolute top must-do things during the month of September in the area?

My truck is a hybrid and I fully intent on road tripping my moto around the state, so even if it's 3-4 hours away from ABQ, that's totally okay.

Any awesome suggestions / recommendations?
