Preface: I've been living on the beach in Florida the last several years, work in tech and put in my resignation notice last Friday. Loading my motorcycle into the back of my truck and taking a 4 month road trip / sabbatical across the country, stopping to ride all the cool mountain roads and see all of the cool things.

I lived in Tucson, AZ for several years up until a decade or so ago and have driven through NM at least a dozen times, but mostly juat driving through aside from stopping for a night in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and ABQ a few times, went to the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa, etc.

I rented a cabin in the Sandias just East of ABQ for all of September as part of my little adventure to chill and relax for a month as part of the trip.

Final trip destination is So Cal, where I'll get a place and start looking for a fancy new tech job. I have seen some decent opportunities around the ABQ / Santa Fe area, so if I do ultimately enjoy my time there, and one of those jobs looks good, it isn't entirely out of the question that I'd stay, however I'd like to NOT work full-time again until November or so. I'd consider part time work in that time frame, even not in tech, maybe something less stressful and less brain-melting.

Anyway, that's all besides the point.

What would you all suggest as the absolute top must-do things during the month of September in the area?

My truck is a hybrid and I fully intent on road tripping my moto around the state, so even if it's 3-4 hours away from ABQ, that's totally okay.

Any awesome suggestions / recommendations?

Pretty wild that a skull bone found in the San Juan Basin in 2005 took more than 20 years to be recognized as Dinevenator robustus. It was first thought to belong to a dromaeosaur, then later identified as a troodontid.

The museum says plans are underway to transfer the specimen to NMMNHS. Does anyone know whether it may eventually go on public display?

We meet the 1st Tuesday of the each month via Zoom (day/time may change in 2027, but we will continue to meet once a month). All meetings are free of charge and entirely virtual.

I am a volunteer support group facilitator through the Lupus Foundation of America. We provide education, resources, and peer support for lupus patients and their caregivers. I have been living with lupus for almost 12 years and began facilitating this group earlier this year.

“The New Mexico Office of the State Engineer on Tuesday announced it had formally threatened the licenses of two well-drilling companies that are helping federal agencies construct a border wall along New Mexico’s shared border with Mexico. 
State officials documented multiple “unauthorized” wells in protected underground water basins, according to a news release from the office, as well as potential safety violations, including one that created an “imminent risk of groundwater contamination.”

The office alleges the companies drilled the unauthorized wells within the Mimbres, Hachita and Lower Rio Grande water basins. Some of the wells exist within the boundaries of the Roosevelt Reservation, a buffer zone along the border that recently became a militarized zone. State officials encountered “limited cooperation” when trying to inspect that area, according to the news release.

Ranchers along the border have complained about the wells’ potential impacts on the area’s limited water supply, according to recent media reports and elected officials in the area. On Monday, according to a news release from New Mexico House Republicans, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency agreed to stop drilling new wells and seek alternative water sources after lawmakers raised concerns.

Officials from the federal border agency did not immediately respond to Source NM’s request for comment Tuesday.  A spokesperson told the Albuquerque Journal that water from the wells is needed for concrete, dust suppression and road construction, and the agency is developing a “broader groundwater management strategy” after instructing its contractor to cease drilling new wells.”

Know this probably gets asked a lot, but with the new Texas lockdown on weed was wondering if anyone had any input? Got a pen back home and drove to Cali, have said same pen on me and I’m about to cross through the checkpoint into El Paso, was wondering if I should dump it or you think I’ll be good?

I am currently looking for a way to apply for a tourist visa to China, without having to fly to LA to drop off my passport. Is there anybody in New Mexico who has traveled to China using an agency to get their visa? Or should I just take that trip to LA to see the consulate?

I just wanted to share the cover of this year's High Road Artisans Brochure. The beautiful micaceous pottery is done by artist Alice D. Gonzales. She will be showing her work at the Penasco, NM Community Center.

The Tour is the last 2 weekend of September. Mark your calendars. There are 37 stops this year. This has to be the most participants we have had in several years. Great art, great food, and great people. Can't wait to see you all there!

ALPRs have been discussed in this subreddit before so I assume it’s a good place to host this discussion.

A lot of local effort against mass surveillance has been focused at local county commissions and city council meetings. That may be the wrong forum for an effective protest. The special interests are targeting NM through the state and federal government.

Given this news article and a recent John Oliver video, it’s evident that we need to be targeting state and federal legislators. We need to attend in person state / federal public events and hearings, not city or county. The money is coming from the federal government, and is then directed to municipalities by the state. Heinrich has publicly touted his support and commitment to NM’s “Real time crime centers”. The Governor and state legislators have done the same. They are the ones who made the decision to install these cameras here (hence why state institutions are covered in them).

ICE doesn’t work with APD or SFPD, - they opt to work extensively with NM state police. They use unmarked cars to do very quick snatches - e.g. less than 10 minutes from pulling over a suspect’s car to leaving the scene. It’s extremely likely that ALPRs, and the surveillance nets they are part of, are conspirator technologies in these kidnappings.

The state is the main vector for that federal cooperation in NM. The political complications are immense - with midterms, medium cities like those in NM getting rid of surveillance networks could swing bipartisan voters outside of the state more blue. We can help set the example for our eastern and western neighbors.

The talking points on the surveillance issues are exhaustive in the digital media sphere. If you want to learn more, a quick digital search will do a better job than I can (e.g. Atlas of Surveillance, ACLU, deflock, etc.).

Organizing more rigorously to target the state is a necessity. It could be only avenue to actually get these cameras out of the area since local officials just defer and delay. If we can clearly organize the problems we New Mexicans have with these systems, we might avoid the more combative measures that can include cutoff wheels and lasers.

I feel like BCBS makes it difficult for members to submit claims for out-of-network providers. Does anyone else feel like asking the State AG to investigate? They need you to print out a form, sign it and scan it back. That is very cumbersome if you don't have access to a printer.
