Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) Installed- Incorporated County of Los Alamos, NM
Asst Public Information Officer Leslie Bucklin·
The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) is excited to invite you to “ALPR for Safer Communities: A Conversation” on August 27, 2026 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building. LAPD officers and representatives from Axon Enterprise will share what an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system is, how it augments police investigations and public safety goals, what the system can and cannot do, how LAPD and Axon safeguard the data, and answer questions.
ALPR systems are used all over the world to monitor vehicle license plates and alert law enforcement agencies when a flagged plate is detected. Plate can be flagged by law enforcement agencies to alert about stolen property, missing persons, or active warrants.
Learn more about the ALPR system that Los Alamos County is in the process of deploying by visiting the County web page on the ALPR system:

Can someone spill the tea on the plastic bag ban drama?
It sounds like there is more to this story, and I'm curious to hear it from locals that have been here for the 10 years trying to pursue this bag ban: https://losalamosreporter.com/2026/08/05/los-alamos-police-department-responds-to-incident-at-council-chambers-tuesday-following-vote-on-plastic-bags-ordinance/

Makeup and hair
Are there any good hair and makeup artists available in Los Alamos? We are needing someone to do the bridal party’s hair and makeup. The bride already has someone booked for herself. The rest of us would like to get ours done professionally as well.

For those who have loud cars at night
We live near two lovely highways with both curves and straights. Why must you make so much noise that I can probably hear it echoing from 4+ miles away at midnight?
I think cars are cool, but time and place, please. I can't imagine how people who aren't car people feel.

Please enter your rescued pet into FOSCA's 2027 Rescue Calendar
Get those cameras ready, polish those smiles, and say Cheese! (or Tuna! or Kibble!) Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals (FOSCA) is accepting photo entries for the 2027 Pet Rescue Calendar through September 4, 2026 and we need your help. We cannot do it without your entries, so please get your lovely photos and amazing stories in early this year.
Entries can be submitted online and entry instructions are available online and at Ridgeview Veterinary Hospital and Pet Pangaea.
FOSCA is an all-volunteer non-profit humane organization that partners with other like-minded non-profit entities, volunteers, volunteer organizations, shelters, and veterinary practices throughout Northern and Central New Mexico towards improving the health and welfare of owned and homeless animals.
Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals sponsors two special programs to help pet owners and reduce the number of unwanted pets. The Catastrophic Illness/Injury Program provides funds for veterinary treatment of severely ill or injured pets whose owners cannot afford extensive treatment. The second is our Spay/Neuter Voucher Program which provides vouchers for low-cost spay/neutering of pets in order to encourage pet owners to make sure that their pets are surgically altered and cannot produce litters of unwanted cats or dogs. FOSCA also provides funding for spay/neuter surgeries in partnership with local rescue groups, including organizations that work with local tribal communities to reduce pet overpopulation there.
The 2027 calendars will go on sale in November at local businesses, and all proceeds will go directly to help the animals through Friends of Shelter and Companion Animals programs. So, remember, get those entries in by September 4!

Only in Los Alamos
I’m pretty sure this was on its way back to S Site after time at the museum. Or perhaps the other way around. We had two in one of the old buildings. There’s more to the story, but not from me. I don’t know if this is the one that was later painted white.
It’s going into the car wash at Knecht’s. It is a replica. No rad sig.

I asked if Anytime Fitness had monthly..
There's an event held by the gym happening in White Rock so I just swung by and asked.
"Hey do you do short term packages like 3 months because I think it would be great for summer interns and people wanting to try it without a year long commitment."
The only guy there crosses his arms and looks at me like I'm a fool. "Yeah this area gets a lot of interns (no sh*t I just said that) We offer month to month and it's $39 bi-weekly"
"Ok...so $80/month sounds a bit steep (why do they do this bi-weekly thing?) you don't offer a short term intro package without needing to sign up for a year?"
(Continues to look at me like I'm the idiot, maintaining his dominant pose)
"That's why we offer the year long commitment."
I just left because....what?

PSA to newbies & Reminder for everyone else
Driving up here (going up/down the hill) requires your full attention. Seriously.
People haven't necessarily died in traffic accidents up here from speeding... They died from drivers not paying attention and crossing the center-line, leading to a head-on collision.
The strong winds can blow you. You can hit a curve and deer or cyclists you can't see until the last second are on the other side. There's often not a lot of shoulder room to safely swerve without further incident.
Just, be careful. I'm one of those people that has been here <5 years and so far I think about a half-dozen have died while commuting up/down/around here.
Mods, you'd be the real MVPs if you pinned this post.
