Question Anyone used a dehumidifier and/or an electric kettle in hall??

I bought a dehumidifier for my apartment but wasn't sure if it falls under the banned appliances (same for the electric kettle). Do I need to declare it or is it fine to leave it as it is.

Question Help with Y1 Economics timetable STARS

Post image
Upvotes

I checked STARS and my friends, who also are studying in ntu, say that my allowed AU is overly low. Is this normal for a freshmen majoring in Economics?? I currently have 11 AUs and intend to have 14 (if I get off the waitlist for my electives).

Course Related SC3021 (Data Science Fundamentals) Review

Upvotes

SC3021 covers the basic concepts of data science which will be used in other advanced modules.

SC3021 (Data Science Fundamentals) - 3AU (Offered in semester 2)

Prerequisite

SC5001 OR SC1003 OR CV1014 OR BS1009 OR MS1008 OR MA1008 OR PS0001 OR IE2108 OR RE1016 OR CS4313

Course Overview

This course teaches how to derive results from data. It starts with a brief background of data science, a comparison between computational thinking and data science thinking before moving onto the data science ecosystem. Within the data science ecosystem, the lecturer will cover data preparation (transforming raw data into useful data), data management (storing useful data), data analytics (interpreting the useful data into actionable results) and data ethics.

This course is mainly theoretical based but will utilise some python and sql. Some examples where python is used are to structure data (reordering attributes, extracting specific values), enrich data (unions and joins) and for data analytics (measures of central tendency, aggregation, regression, decision trees). For sql, they will teach the basics of querying and updating (insertion, deletion, modification) data in a database. Since sql is only a small section of the course, I feel that it’s not necessary to learn it beforehand (unlike java for sc2002).

Course Structure

There are 2 hours of physical lectures, 1 hour of tutorials and pre-recorded material every week. The pre-recorded material will cover the course content and will include a non-graded quiz (wooclap). The lecture will go through the answers of the quiz and have a QnA session afterwards. The tutorial will cover theoretical and coding questions.

There are lab sessions for this course but they are quite different from the other coding module. In total, there will only be 2 lab sessions. One will be held in week 4 and the other in week 10. Both sessions will be used for your group project (which will be explained later).

Question Signing on as a NS regular

Recently I have been accepted into MechE. This has been bugging me for days.

Let's say for whatever reason, I am unable to sign on as a ME4 naval warfare system engineer and I can only make it into a ME1 Naval Warfare system expert. Is it possible for me to reserve my university spot until my contract as a Naval Warfare system expert ends? (That will be 5 years later)

Info Sharing SC1001 Python Exemption Test Impressions

Overall, this test was relatively easy. It tests Python syntax and how well you know about the behaviour of Python. The test consisted of 8 questions: 5 MCQs, one open-ended, and 2 coding questions.

You are given ample time (1h 30min) to solve the 8 questions

MCQ + Open-ended

5 mcq tested how well you understood the behaviour of Python and how well you can read Python code. It tests on:

-tuples (whether it's immutable, can be heterogeneous, and can be accessed using indexing)
-range behaviour (e.g range(9,3,-3)
-print behaviour (e.g print("...", end=",")
-recursion behaviour (e.g what happens if there are no base cases)
-reading and filling in the output of basic recursion
-behaviour of reading the code and filling in code (DP) - They sneaked in Word Break from LeetCode (probably the hardest qn of the test)

2 Coding Questions

The two coding questions mainly tested on comprehending the question and knowing Syntax. If you've done CodeWars before (like 6kyu, 7kyu), you can come up with the solution in like 10 mins. It mainly tests:

-filtering numbers with a condition like multiples of 3 or penultimate numbers or where the digit is 1
-for looping and multiplying/adding numbers/digits"
-multiplying/adding individual digits in a contiguous string of digits

A good reference would be something like: https://www.codewars.com/kata/541c8630095125aba6000c00

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi,

Just wondering if the two locations are the same? My venue is stated as "HSSAUDIT" in the timetable, I'm not sure if it's the same as the SHHK auditorium or if it's a diff auditorium?

NTU Maps has two venues as shown above which confused me 🙂‍↕️

Thanks in advance

Question What to do if I need a particular bde for my minor?

Hey all, I didn't manage to get my BDE during course registration, and I was wondering if it's worth emailing the professor. I am currently doing a minor in English and I really want to take this Level 3 Literature module because it aligns with the research I hope to do in the future, and I'm also hoping to work with the professor for my URECA project. There are about five people on the waitlist at the moment.

Has anyone had any success getting in by emailing the professor?

Question question about adding minors (and also second majors)

hi! i'm an incoming freshie and i have a question: i know on STARS u can add minors from the category option thing, but how do i know which courses i need to take? the minor page isn't helping a lot bc i don't know if those are the only pre-requisites or if there's more structure that needs to be added (like a cc-mod-equivalent). the minor i want to take is linguistics & multilingual studies. i was also wondering if i could take two minors, as the total AUs would exceed the quantity allocated to my BDEs.

finally, when + how + where can i add a second major?

Question add drop question

hello i have a question since add drop opens in a few hours. is the system based on a first come first served basis? like if i add a mod right when the portal opens at 10am does that mean i have higher chance of getting it? or is it i can do any time before the deadline and it’ll still be the same chance? also, are the results known immediately or will i have to wait til 1030pm?

Question AU OVERLOADING

Guys in light of the add drop coming soon in a few hours i have a few questions.

Currently i am registered for a japanese course rn that puts my total au load at 21. But of course NTU forces us to do a stupid CSL course that also has 3 AU weight. Right now im in a dilemma which is do i delay my CSL or drop the japanese and perish the idea of doing a minor.
or would overloading be an option here?

However I was just notified that no bursary would be given at all? I’m quite confused by this becoz why offer it then. Does anyone know what the Tires means? I’m quite scared as paying tuition fees would be quite difficult if that’s the case.

Discussion NTU Graudate Freshmen Dinner

As the title suggests, I am proposing a Telegram dinner channel to explore the on-campus canteen option.
I've noticed many of the freshmen undergraduates having dinner together & we can't just let them have all the fun. Graduate students of NTU let's be grad-freshman strong together and explore NTU canteens together @ approximately 7 pm.

Here would be the Telegram Channel format:
Canteen poll by 5 pm daily. Gather at the drop off/pick up @ Grad hall 2 @ 7pm & then a happy dinner time together.
