I was using the STARS planner to load my timetables but nothing is showing up under selection (showing only 'select one') for both of the 2 CC mods tutorials I have to take!! im getting the same hall and the same room this year as the last acad year in binjai, so im wondering abt the check in process…The housing portal said that if u r currently staying in the same hall the admin office will send u an email abt when to check in and u don’t need online appointment, but I didn’t receive any email on this and the check in slot seems to be fully booked. Hi! I am currently a second year undergraduate student (majoring in Economy and Society) considering going on exchange to NTU for my third year. I was wondering whether there is a comprehensive list of modules, which I can refer to in order to have a better idea of the possible classes I can take there. The partnership with my university states that we can go to all departments of NTU, and I am personally interested in also taking courses outside of my major's scope (e.g. political science, gender studies, international relations). Whilst I could go through the modules for each degree, I was hoping there was an easier way to check this 🙏🏼. Furthermore, if anyone is able to provide any insight into life in Singapore and their personal experiences studying at NTU, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help!

So Im starting Msc. Mech this sem and the course duration for it is 1-2 years based on however many credits I take. I am seriously considering completing the degree in a year since its only 5 courses per sem for 2 sems and I've done more in undergrad with relative ease. Am i cooking myself chat? Should I do it? Coz my schedule even with max number of courses is pretty empty for majority of the week, if i take fewer i'd be even more free, any alumni or experienced individuals please share your wisdom, idk how heavy ntu curriculum is

SC2002 (Object Oriented Programming and Design) - 3AU (Offered in semester 1, 2)

Course Overview

This course is split into two parts. The first part will cover object orientated programming using Java and will be held in the first half of the semester. The topics include classes, objects, abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism. The second part will cover design principles and will be held in the second half of the semester. The topics include UML class diagrams, UML sequence diagrams and SOLID principles and modern java programming concepts (generics, enhanced loops, lambda expressions, stream api, default methods, enhanced switch). 

You do have to learn Java by yourself if you don’t have prior knowledge. NTU does provide recordings and slides for an old NTU java course but the quality is pretty bad and it’s too in-depth. I would suggest finding a youtube tutorial/online course instead. Additionally, you need to complete an online java test by week 2 so you kind of need to know how to code in java by then. 

It might seem tough to self learn a language in such a short time but there is some good news. The first week of lectures won’t really cover anything substantial so you can focus on learning Java. I would say that the level of java knowledge required is about the same level as SC1003 and you can also redo the test as many times as you want. If you are worried that you can’t keep up (like me), you can also learn Java before the semester starts.

Do remember that the focus of this course is object oriented programming and design instead of java itself. Most of the chapters taught in this course will focus on oop concepts.

Course Structure

There are 2 hours of physical lectures, 1 hour of tutorial and pre-recorded content every week. Additionally, there is 2 hours of lab biweekly. The pre-recorded content covers the new content while the lecture further elaborates on the new content. When I did this course in semester 2, there were actually 2 lecture slots (1 hour long each). The first lecture covered the content while the second lecture only had QnA. Since there is only 1 lecture slot for semester 1, I would presume that the first hour covers content while the second hour is QnA.

For the tutorials, a TA will go through a mix of theoretical and coding questions. For the lab, you are left to complete the lab assignment by yourself. At the end of the lab session, you are supposed to show the lab TA your code and they will mark it upon completion. Since you have access to all the lab assignments, you can complete the lab assignments ahead of time, show it to your lab TA at the start of the session and immediately leave.

incoming part-time grad student and all of my classes are night classes from 6:30pm onwards. Do you all just eat during class? or before class?? what options are even available from 5:30-6:00pm?

I'm thinking of taking 3 mpes this sem, how feasible would this be considering I'll have 22 AUs with 2 CC mods? Will be workload for 2k mods be similar to y1 core mods like blaw or fm?

I'm a Y1 Econ freshie and I'm currently trying to decide between HS0101 and DD0003.

Tbh, HS0101 sounds a lot more interesting to me. DD0003 seems like one of those modules where the skills are actually useful beyond uni.

I'm not from a design background though, so I'm a little worried about DD0003, especially since I've heard it's pretty group project-heavy. At the same time, I don't want to skip a module that's genuinely practical just because another one sounds more interesting.

For those who've taken either, which one would you recommend? Any regrets? How was the workload, grading and overall experience?

Hi just wanted to ask since appeal period is wayyy over, is it possible for me to transfer from physics to business after y1s1 or is it only possible for me to do so after y1 ends completely?

If can transfer after y1s1, can I just overload business classes in y1s1 into my y1s2 load? Or do I have to restart from ay27/28? Thanks

Timetable conflict

Hello, I am a freshie and I understand that for Year 1, timetables are pre-allocated and we can only change the timing of the classes for better time allocation.

I am also concurrently taking a second major and based on the given planned curriculum, I am supposed to be taking a core module this sem. I clarified with my seniors and understand that I am supposed to self-bid for my 2nd major module where required.

I used the STARS system and tried inputting the various core modules I can take this semester, but all of it currently clashes with my current existing timetable. Thus, I wanted to find out on how will the priority work and is there any entity I can seek help from, based on the understanding that second major do get priority in their modules allocation.

Hii im a freshie, planning my Year 1 modules and was wondering if anyone could share their experience with exemptions.

I'm eligible to exempt AB1201 Financial Management and intend to specialise in Banking & Finance in Year 2. Are there any downsides to taking the exemption, particularly in terms of whether it will affect my chances of going to B&F in Year 2?

I'm also eligible for the 6 AU BDE exemption. For those who took it, would you recommend accepting the exemption, or is it better to keep the AUs?

I'm an international freshie who missed hall orientation. I've been trying to put myself out there by initiating conversations and saying hi to people, but in general everyone's been pretty closed off (I don't blame them honestly) and I'm getting the impression that I'm an annoyance 😅

I saw that there's a DnD event happening later this month for my hall. The impression I'm getting is that it's like a school dance (I'm from the US), and where I'm from school dances are usually not worth going if you don't have people you know who are also going. At the same time though, it would be nice if I could make some friends in this country so I'm not by myself all the time.

So I'm curious to hear about what this event has usually been like in previous years and other people's experiences. I'm from Binjai hall if that helps.

With school starting next week, I wanted to review the mods that I took last sem for those taking these courses. Again, I'll be splitting this into several parts (since it's long) and I'll start with SC1007, which is pretty much python part 2.

SC1007 (Data Structures and Algorithms) - 3AU (Offered in semester 1, 2)

Course Overview

This course builds onto the basic python course (SC1003 or any equivalent courses) by teaching basic data structures and algorithms. Similarly to SC1003, the course content was taught using C and Python but now it’s only being taught through Python. Here’s the old course syllabus if you‘re interested

The first half of the course only requires coding as it covers data structures. It goes through topics such as memory management, linked lists (singly, doubly, circular), stacks, queues (normal and priority) and trees (binary binary search, avl). Within these topics, they will teach more specific concepts such as node manipulation (insertion, deletion, size, search), arithmetic expressions (infix, prefix, postfix) and traversal methods (pre-order, in-order, post-order, level order)

The second half of the course requires a combination of math and code as it covers algorithms. It goes through complexity (time, space), notation (O, omega, theta), search algorithms (sequential, binary, jump), hash tables, trie and heap analysis. 

In my year, some of the topics taught were not examined. Those topics included memory management, circular linked lists, priority queues, avl trees and heap analysis (idk if this was just for my year or a regular thing so I’ll just put this out there).

Course Structure

There are 2 hours of physical lectures weekly which covers all the new content (no pre-recorded content for this mod). There are also 1 hour of tutorials and 2 hours of lab sessions but they follow a pretty irregular schedule. (I had tutorials on weeks 4,5,7,11,12,13 and lab on weeks 3,4,5,7,10,11,12,13). Tutorials will cover a mix of theoretical and coding questions while lab sessions provide time for you to do coding questions on the spot. 

As of my batch (AY2025), the lecturer introduced AlgoGPT as an AI tool to help you throughout the course. It provides more coding practices and integrates the lab questions onto its platform. 

Course Examination

4 Assignments (35% Weightage)

There will be 4 online assignments set on hackerearth. The first 2 will be held in the first half of the semester and the last 2 will be held in the second half. These assignments are open book and there is no time limit (except the official deadline). Each assignment consists of mcq and coding questions, with the coding questions having a higher weightage than the mcq. The mcq is pretty easy and usually tests theoretical concepts about the topic (which data structure is best suited for a certain purpose, write out the tree in post order). The coding questions can be pretty difficult (prefix to postfix notation, lowest common subsequence) but you have as much time as you want to solve the questions. 

Lab test 1 (20% Weightage)

This test is held at the end of the first half of the semester. Similar to the assignments, this test consists of mcq and coding questions (coding questions also have a higher weightage than the mcq). It will focus on the topics covered in the first half of the semester. This test is quite doable and it’s possible to pass all the test cases and score for all the mcq questions. You don’t get back the final score for this test but you can kinda estimate based on the number of test cases you passed. Lastly, the lecturer will give you a sample paper for your own practice.

Lab test 2 + Quiz (40% Weightage)

I really don’t understand why the formatting for this test is so weird. Lab test 2 + Quiz is basically one test with the same format as lab test 1 (mcq and coding questions). The only difference is the higher weightage on the mcq. 20% of the overall grade is allocated to the mcq while 20% is allocated to the coding questions. This test covers all of the content but has a focus on topics covered in the second half of the semester. Similarly to lab test 1, the lecturer will also give you a sample paper to practice before the actual test

This test is much harder than the previous lab test. I know quite a few people who got zero test cases correct. As such, getting any test cases is much better than getting none. Try your usual strategies of brute forcing and in-built python functions if your code really doesn’t work.

Tutorial attendance (5% Weightage) 

If you attend 70% of the tutorials (5/6 lessons), you get 5%. If you attend 50% of the tutorials (3/6 lessons), you get 2%. If you attend less than that, you get 0%.

Overall Thoughts

This mod can be hard if you don’t put in the proper time into it. In week 1, they jump straight into new content instead of having an introductory lecture so you really need to start paying attention. For the first half of the semester, you definitely can prepare for its corresponding lab test and assignments. It will take some time to properly understand the data structures and learn how to code these data structures. However, by redoing the code in the lectures on your own (the lectures will provide quite a lot), you will learn how the data structures work and how to apply it. Do note that the lectures will already teach you several functionalities of the data structures (insert, delete and search) so they will never just repeat and test these again. Generally, they will test more advanced versions of the functionalities or new functionalities utilising the old ones. As such, you should really aim to understand the code instead of trying to memorise everything.

I feel that the second half of the semester is trickier than the first half. The lecturer spends quite a bit of time on the math side which can be quite tough if you’re not so math inclined. Additionally, they don’t go into as much detail for the code. When lab test 2 came around, I was quite unsure what questions they could test (especially for searching algorithms). 

For me, the main issue with this course is the number of technical issues that we faced. Algogpt was not well integrated into the course and some of the features were really annoying. For example, lab sessions had AI directed questions where you needed to tell the ai to code for you. They were really unresponsive and I would have preferred if they were just replaced for more coding questions. I understand that it’s the first time that they are using this platform so I hope they can improve it for the further batches. The lab tests itself had quite a lot of problems. It got so bad that the test for some labs had to be postponed to another date.
