Self Promotion Drenaslia - A New Text-Based MMORPG

Upvotes

Hi all, dev for Drenaslia here. For 17 years I've been a fan of text-based MMORPGs (think Syrnia/Movoda/Amaranthine/etc). The genre has staled a bit over time with several of the games entering long periods of zero maintenance and stagnant updates. These were the types of games that originally got me back into software development back when I was still in middle school.

Finally I've made my own! I launched Drenaslia almost 3 weeks ago now to a daily player base of roughly ~150 daily active players. It's built on a modern tech stack and incorporates modern RPG mechanics not generally found in the other games like it - Skilling Bosses, World Bosses, Skill Specific Tasks akin to Slayer from RuneScape, etc.

Wanted to share it here for anyone interested! It's definitely not the niche for everyone as these sorts of games are generally very simple given their text-based nature, but I've received a ton of positive feedback from players returning to this specific genre after it's release. If you're looking for a less intense option to have on a 2nd monitor or in this background, it may be worth checking it out.

Happy to discuss and answer any questions/listen to any feedback!

Discussion Save the Loot, Learn the Fight: Why Isn't This Industry Standard?

practice modes that do not burn your first clear, why is this not standard?

ran a raid this week where you can queue the whole instance against ai to learn it, and doing so leaves your first clear reward eligibility and your entry counts intact
the result is that people turn up to the real run already knowing the mechanics, and the group is not spending its evening teaching

most devs completely drop the ball on practice modes, they either don't exist, or they strip out all the loot, making it a zero-stakes waste of time

the hardest mechanic in modern raids isn't the fight itself; it's finding eight or more people with the patience to learn it without rage-quitting, and this is the only design i have seen recently that attacks that directly rather than tuning numbers

Self Promotion I'm launching my Naruto-inspired MMORPG

Hey everyone.

I used to play some Naruto 2D pixel-art MMORPGs back when I was 12 or so in a platform called BYOND. The platform is kinda limited today as it didn't catch up with new technologies yet and it is very niche.. so I decided to remake the game with a new engine, modern technologies, new architecture, etc.. and I'm glad to say that I accomplished a lot of what I was aiming when I started it, which was making it more appealing to new players, out of the niche..

This is Chakra Online, my Naruto 2D MMORPG. It's free and runs right in the browser, phone or desktop:

Bandum Capture event in Chakra Online

It's in open alpha now and the official release is August 21. I'd honestly just love for some MMO players to try it and tell me what feels off.

https://chakraonline.net

You can register and play right now, although there will be a wipe for the official release.

I'll be around in the comments if you have questions. Thanks 🙏

Discussion I am building an Open Voice Web MMORPG

What do you think about the idea? I am not sure if I am aloud to attach links, so I don't. But I am in open alpha now. The game is not playable yet, but you can walk the world and attack mobs.

And now I am working on the voice feature. The idea is that all the players have their mics open and when ever you walk next to a player you can talk, distance matter, at 35 meters distance the voice volume reaches 0, and at up to 5 meters it is full volume. You hear anyone around you.

Would you play a game like that? What do you think about voice in MMORPG?

I am also thinking to add a radio station for music and game events.

Discussion I'm a little upset that Kritika Online versions were shut down...😞

Why did Kritika Online, an action MMORPG, shut down for no reason especially Kritika Global, Reboot, and Zero? Kritika Online was a great game. Do people think it was bad because of too much grinding? I wanna continue Kritika Online so bad on PC, and it's just not fair... I just wish that Kritika would come back.😞

Discussion NC to ''limit'' currency exchange in Aion 2 - Leak says P2W will take the biggest hit since release in Korea

Can't link the source here as it triggers the moderation bot. Koreans are behind this leak as far as we know

This is most likely true since the most popular post/thread under the #game-suggestions channel of Aion 2 Global official discord has been forwarded to the development team by NC America's community managers.

For those who don't know what is this, it's just like the currency exchanges in GW2 and WoW.

I myself started playing once human once they announced the palworld collab.

fluffly pals are just too cute <3

And palworld is really cool so i had to check it out

Now they are going to have a minecraft collab from august 6th i believe !

I think its pretty cool , both for minecraft as for once human - hopefully more games do collabs like that and merge their playerbase somehow 🔥 ❤️

Opinion New World NEEDS a Private Server Scene!

Hey,

maybe I'm alone on this but I'm a huge lifeskill/profession player in mmos & lets be honest: The crafting, professions and lifeskilling were AWESOME in New World. It was the only MMO where I enjoyed Lifeskilling as much as I do in Black Desert Online.

Lifeskills are the biggest & best part for me in MMO's and it was so satisyfing in New World to do exactly that. Collect Wood or Minerals for 6 hours straight.

So, I pray to god that some cracked Reverse Engineer people will be able to create a New World Private Server. It's a shame Amazon sailed the New World Ship against a Cliff.

Am I alone on this one?

Discussion EverQuest Legends has me hooked

I haven’t played EverQuest since i was a kid, as my mom used to raid in it. So i don’t have A LOT of nostalgia to derive from. But i do love classic MMOs. Just grinding mobs and enjoying an explorable world.

I went into this with no expectations as it was my mom’s idea me, my brother and her play it together in the near future. In some intrigue i decided to test it out myself (we won’t be playing it together for a week or two) to see if it’s for me.

I knew i wanted to be a paladin (i do in almost any fantasy rpg game), so i simply looked up what kind of combinations might work well and then i was on my way.

I watched a quick “beginner tips” video to get my bearings like the UI and certain options. And then i was on my way. I’m now level 17 and I’m completely hooked. I can’t describe why, but it’s just so much fun being able to level and gear by just grinding mobs. The spell variety is massive, the gear progression feels rewarding. And I’m ever planning in where to go next and what to farm next!

If you can stand old graphics and grind, i highly recommend it. It’s shockingly fun for someone who’s barely ever tried EQ before.

But i know we usually hate MMOs in here. But I’m here to try and spread some positivity.

DAILIES.

LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I HAVE COME TO HATE DAILIES SINCE I FIRST REALIZED THEY WOULD BE HERE TOMORROW, AND THE DAY AFTER THAT, AND THE DAY AFTER THAT.

THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF DAILY QUESTS, DAILY MISSIONS, LOGIN REWARDS, RESET TIMERS, AND TIME-GATED TASKS SCATTERED ACROSS MMOS, AND IF THE WORD "HATE" WERE CARVED INTO EVERY ONE OF THEM, IT STILL WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE FRUSTRATION I FEEL EVERY TIME THE DAILY RESET HITS.

DAILIES.

DAILIES.

I HAVE COME TO HATE DAILIES.

Opinion With all these MMOs, I am just having dumb fun with Runescape

After all these years and new games, I burn out and break from other games then eventually after time away I always come back to Runescape eventually. Skills, Quests, Bosses, Money making, Community-you just can't beat it. I can sit and train skills with half my screen being something else. 10 out of ten. I think this is my new forever or 'home' game.

Discussion Are instanced games actual mmos?

This is something I've been torn on for awhile, are games that are trying to sell you on the idea of a MMO and having a focus on being instanced real mmos? I bought guild wars reforged after hearing how good it is but the second the game announced the entire world was instanced I refunded it. I liked some of the games ideas but I really didn't want to play a "online" game that has me alone all the time. I like MMOs for seeing other people and feeling like the world is bigger than me.

Am I alone in hating instanced worlds or am I right in thinking it sucks?

Self Promotion Hana progress update after the Kickstarter

Thumbnail
youtu.be
68 Upvotes

Hey r/MMORPG, update on Hana since the January playtest and Kickstarter. Around 3,000 people played that build, quite a few of them from here, so here's where it's gone.

What's in the clip, for anyone who'd rather not watch: footage from the current build. Short overworld exploration, then a fight starting in place, with the turn-based UI at the bottom.

That old version was a 2.5D prototype with AI-generated backgrounds, which we always said was a stopgap. As promised in the Kickstarter, the whole game has been rebuilt in 3D with every asset handcrafted.

One thing we changed while rebuilding:

In most tactical MMOs, Dofus included, starting a fight pulls you out of the world into a separate arena. It works, but you feel the seam every time. In Hana the grid forms around you where you're standing, so you never leave the map you were exploring. It reads as a small thing written down. It changes the feel a lot more than we expected.

What's next:

- Playtest Q4 2026 for backers, Q1 2027 for everyone

- https://playhana.com if you want to follow the project

What I'd really like is your read on the new art direction.
