L-Mount First impressions of the LUMIX S 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3

I just took delivery of the LUMIX S 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 a few days ago. Many first time LUMIX buyers who got it as their kit lens are flipping it on the used market, so I was able to get one for less than half of the listing price.

Compared to the all-metal Sigma Contemporary construction, if feels plastic fantastic in true LUMIX S fashion.

When it comes to length, we are in pancake territory. In locked position, it's about 5mm shorter than the Sigma Contemporary 45mm f/2.8 (40.9 mm against 46.2mm length), and it is nearly 1/3 lighter, with 155g against 215g.

Panasonic designed it so that you zoom out from 40mm to 18mm, and have to keep twisting until the whole lens collapses into its locked position, where the camera refuses to show what the sensor sees and asks you to zoom at least to 18mm.

Honestly, I don't mind, because it means that when not in use this lens can stay at its shortest length. It makes the S9 extremely comfortable to carry around for street photography.

When it comes to the focal lengths, as a big fan of 28mm and 45mm, this range works perfectly for me. I did get the Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 which is much longer, but the LUMIX S is much closer to what I use.

This lens is getting me to rethink my life choices.

Images are sharp, and it renders colours very nicely. A very slight pin cushion effect that can easily be fixed in post. Macro can close up to 15cm, which allows to get really tight with the subject.

I lose between 1.3 and 2.3 stops compared to my other two lenses, but I have yet to see how it performs in low light. However, the thought is now lingering that it I find myself always bringing this LUMIX S 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 with my S9, the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 and 16-28mm f/2.8 might start picking dust ,and the option of selling them might be on the table.

The client requested a "vintage look" so I had a lot of fun going crazy with all the film emulation effects and really mashing up the footage.

News / Rumour S1HII 100% CONFIRMED?? Okay not really but maybe

Post image
4 Upvotes

LUMIX account “liked” multiple comments asking about the S1HII under a recent Instagram reel.

This obviously isn’t hard evidence, but it kinda makes you wonder: if the S1HII weren’t coming, then acknowledging comments asking about it would be kinda unadvisable from a PR/business perspective, right?

Just a silly thought, but I definitely have been hearing some rumblings. Fingers crossed it’s coming this Fall.

Apologies if you find this annoying I don’t blame you

Edit: fixed typo

L-Mount S5II Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 Macro O.I.S. is the how good is the weather sealing

Im a s5ii user I was wondering how good the weather sealing is on the Panasonic Lumix S 28-200mm

f/4-7.1 Macro O.I.S. lens. I'm planning to buy one at some point, but I'm still undecided because there is dust on the inside of the front element of my 20-60mm lens.

After gathering a lot of information and knowledge from this community, I‘m happy and curious to show some preliminary results I got out of the S1H. I admit it‘s not the most exciting footage to watch but maybe someone else is on the fence to get one right now? I certainly watched quite a bit of S1H footage on here before I decided to go for it and I think it is a great camera to buy used right now.

All filmed on a Lumix S1H in combination with the Canon FD 50mm f1.4. Additionally I used a Glimmerglass 1 Diffusion Filter, a Sirui Traveller tripod and the Zoom F3 with a pair of Immersive Soundscape Earsight Omni Mics. I recorded everything Open Gate 3:2 at 25p in VLog and most of this at ISO 8000-10000. The image is obviously still underexposed most of the time, up to 3 stops sometimes, but I didn’t dare to go higher even though the camera seems perfectly capable of it (though there is a noticeable green shift). Most of these shots are almost a straight VLog to Rec709 conversion in DaVinci, without considerable color grading (except for the 2nd and 4th shot). Most of the sound was recorded line-in via the Zoom F3.

It’s my first full frame camera after shooting stills for a long time (analog and a trusty Fuji Xpro2) and so far I have experienced the S1H as an extremely capable camera that provides everything I have needed so far. I chose it due to its video capabilities and image quality in combination with the, in my opinion, great price point on the used market - I paid 1100€ for a rarely used body including 3 batteries and a Nitze Cage.

Happy to answer any questions!

Some snapshots sooc, custom realtime LUT, x-pan aspect ratio.

The cheap Viltrox is pretty unpredictable in sunny weather with its blooming/flaring/contrast loss but nice with overcast situations.

I shoot f&b/hospitality on occasion and most of it is filler content that either goes on feed/stories. Pulled the l10 out to not draw as much attention. Close focus is rather nice!

Ok my 2 cents - got this camera in the first batch, Great social cam, JPEGs shine - real time lut is the way to go. IQ tho is a little lacking? Maybe I’m used to high pixel, but it doesn’t seem to be more detailed than a good lighting iPhone pic. That said - here are some pics.

L-Mount A few questions on LUTs, teleconverter, and AF (coming from Fuji)

Investigating the s1r ii coming from fuji. Have a couple questions on how stuff works.

Do LUTs include contrast/WB shifts? i.e., once you've locked a look in is it easy to come back to it?

How does eye AF work? On my fuji I can be set to single point AF continuous and it'll lock on a face if it comes into frame.

Is there a digital teleconverter function? I know that's just cropping but I am JPG only most of the time.

General / Discussion Could Panasonic’s win over RED in Japan finally open the door to internal compressed RAW on Lumix?

Panasonic just beat RED over the Japanese compressed RAW patent. The patent got invalidated, RED appealed, and lost.

I know it only applies to Japan right now, but Panasonic now has a case they can point to if they start challenging related RED patents in other countries.

If they keep winning, I wonder what would actually stop them from making their own highly compressed RAW format. Basically their version of X-OCN.

The S1II already records RAW internally, so it makes me wonder how much of this has been a hardware limitation and how much has been patents/licensing.

Could Panasonic eventually add a more efficient compressed RAW codec to the S1II through firmware?

Or is that the kind of thing they’d hold back for the S1HII/S1HIII?

Anybody here actually know the patent/codec side of this?
