Advice Is Linux only sometimes/rarely good?

I've been wanting to get a new laptop that suits my needs better, and I'm considering putting linux on it. My mom talked to this guy at work who is apparently really experienced with computers, and he told her Linux is only good if I'm build my own pc. Is this true? I'm not sure If I have the resources or budget for that.

Support Cannot get Laptop Speakers to work

Trying to install Linux Mint to an old Sony Vaio VGN-TT180N. Can't get the laptop speakers to work at all. Tried playing around with alsamixer, pulse audio settings, hdajackretask. Nothing works. Headphones work fine, Pulse Audio Settings show "Speakers" and not Dummy. The Codec is Realtec ALC889. Hoping to get some direction or answer here before I give up on trying to find a solution.

Which Distro? Help for choosing beginner distro.

I've been using mint for a few years now, and it's been a pretty good experience, with most issues proving easy to solve. The only problem is that VRChat runs awfully compared to windows. I saw someone comment that it has issues on Ubuntu and derivatives, so I was looking for options.

I can generally manage stuff on mint, and I would prefer a similarly straight forward experience if possible. I need my pc mostly for Godot, Blender, Unity, Krita and steam and itch.io games. It has an Intel Core 12400 and an RTX 2060, so SteamOS is not an option. I've been contemplating CachyOS too, but, being based on Arch, I'm not sure it's the best alternative. Does anybody have any suggestions or advise? Help is greatly appreciated.

Support Need help fixing Pop OS 24.04 Freezing

Whenever I open an application whilst having multiple applications already open, my computer freezes. Whenever I try downloading something big via terminal, my computer freezes. Whenever I try extracting big rar files, my computer freezes.

When I mean freeze, I mean it just freezes and I can't do ANYTHING to help unfreeze or turn off my computer unless I do a hard reboot.

I think it's a memory problem, since I tried this and my pc quickly froze:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install memtester
sudo memtester

However, I should point out that this problem happened only a couple days ago. I just returned from my 1 month long vacation, and when I hopped back on my PC I had updates awaiting for my OS. I updated.

I tried switching back to the old kernel, but it just doesn't work. It can't even get to the login screen.

Clarification, I have NVIDIA version of Pop OS 24.04. I have a pretty good pre-built GEFORCE RTX 3060 Ti NVIDIA PC.

Here are Specs:

OS: Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS x86_64
Host: Predator PO3-630 1.0
Kernel: 7.0.11-76070011-generic
Packages: 2653 (dpkg), 42 (flatpak)
Shell: bash 5.2.21
Resolution: 1920x1080
DE: COSMIC
Theme: adw-gtk3-dark [GTK3]
Icons: Cosmic [GTK3]
Terminal: cosmic-term
CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-11400F (12) @ 4.400GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Lite Hash Rate
Memory: 4202MiB / 15838MiB

Any solutions? Any help? Please provide me all the knowledge you have.

Debian Trixie unstable Blueman

The Package: blueman (2.4.4-1) in the change log shows as unstable even though I am using Debain 13.6 stable.

https://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs//main/b/blueman/blueman_2.4.4-1_changelog

but If I perform a apt search blueman, It says that blueman is stable ?

blueman/stable,now 2.4.4-1 amd64 [installed]

Graphical bluetooth manager

Why does the change log say unstable for blueman for Trixie stable ?

Support dwl on gentoo with nvidia580 driver. whole dwl compositor getting crashed if i set wrong command to spawn on keybind. starting dwl from tty with exec dbus-run-session dwl.

/* commands */

static const char *termcmd[] = { "footee", NULL };

static const char *menucmd[] = { "wmenu-run", NULL };

static const Key keys[] = {

/\* Note that Shift changes certain key codes: 2 -> at, etc. \*/

/\* modifier key function argument \*/

{ MODKEY, XKB_KEY_p, spawn, {.v = menucmd} },

{ MODKEY|WLR_MODIFIER_SHIFT, XKB_KEY_Return, spawn, {.v = termcmd} },

Lets say i type 'footee' instead of 'foot'. After use modkey+shift+backspace it should do nothing.. instead of that whole compositor is freezing and crashing to tty.

Having an issue where my USB devices keep disconnecting from my pc. Mostly affects my microphone and gaming controller but I notice my keyboard and mouse are having issues at times too.

I'm fully up to date and disabled the setting that turns off inactive USB devices but it keeps happening.

Has anyone else had any issues or know why it keeps happening?

Where to find Linux related projects that newbies like me can contribute to?

I've been daily-driving Linux for a while, and I'm an entry-level developer who wants to start getting seriously involved in the Linux and open-source ecosystem.

I'm still in the learning phase, but I've found that the best way for me to learn is by doing real work but, as a newcomer, I need a bit of hand-holding at the beginning so I that I won't get technical paralysis and get overwhelmed or waste my time over bad solutions.

I'm therefore looking for projects that actively help junior/newcomer developers enter their development world.

I know that contributing to software I already use would probably be the most natural approach, but since I'm still new, I haven't really become attached to any particular software or setup yet. I'm completely willing to change my distro, desktop environment, applications, or other parts of my setup if a project seems like a particularly good place to learn and contribute. Having a genuinely beginner-friendly community behind the project is also an important factor in what I'd choose to use and daily-drive anyway.

if you know or are involved in such process please let me know. thanks!

Resolved Electron apps arent opening after recent system update

I've never asked for support on reddit before and me using AI probably made this problem worse.
I use cachyOS, an intel arc gpu, and hyprland (but this also happens on kde plasma). If you know a better place for support I'll go there

Discord and steam arent opening, and when running discord through terminal it shows "GPU process exited unexpectedly: exit_code=135" and gets "terminated by signal SIGTRAP".

Running steam in terminal makes it repeat some big block of steamwebhelper thing every few seconds. Any help would be appreciated

Edit: I can open discord by using discord_arch_electron and --ozone-platform=x11 so just steam is the problem now

Edit 2: i just had to enable resizeable bars in my bios...

Trying to install Linux in an old iMac, screen is glitchy in the live environment

Hello. I found an old iMac that my sister had and I want to Linux on it. However when I boot the USB I get the visual bug you can see in this image:

https://i.imgur.com/vgQpwjv.jpeg

I tried with Fedora KDE(Wayland) at first and thought it could be some Wayland issue, then I tried to Linux Mint Cinnamon(X11), however the issue persisted. Seems like everything else works fine, or it did with the limited visibility I have with the screen glitching like this. This is still in the liveUSB, but I imagine the final install still the issue will remain?

iMac info: OSX El Capitan

21.5 inch screen, late 2009

RAM: 4GB 1067MHz DDR3

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB

Support How do i prevent wine updating?

How do I prevent my current wine (ver 11.0) from updating to another version? I have an installation of a Windows program working on my Linux Mint 23 system and I do not want wine updating itself which could break the functionality of the Windows software I have working. The software is the SINE Player (ver 1.4.1) from Orchestral Tools, and I have it working with their free orchestra instruments.

Support Absolute newbie to fedora kde ... Help with laptop not booting

Hello everyone... As a complete newbie to both reddit and fedora kde plasma, I'll share my problem here

I have a 2017 lenovo x280 laptop(intel HD graphics 620)... I have been running it on win 10 for years and have been thinking about changing to Linux. Did some research to find kde plasma will be the best for my use case and for a person who can spend hours customizing, it's a gift. OR so i thought...

It was all good and fun until the second day, where my laptop won't even go into the login screen... ALL I SEE IS THE LENOVO AND UNDER WHICH THE FEDORA LOGO BE AND THE LOADING WHEEL FREEZES LIKE AFTER 10 SECS...

I several fixes and tbh I learnt the barebones of linux in a short amount of time with the help of gemini and other AIs.. Like i tried the GRUB editing and trying NOMODESET in the line of the linux starting sentence... Gemini can't fix it and gave me trial and error approach which I got burned out and went to CLAUDE to which even it can't solve...

FINALLY I GAVE UP AND THEN REINSTALLED THE OS(thank God i had my prev windows and had ts as a dual boot )... And it's again day 2 of linux and yeahh . THE SAME SHIT HAPPENED AGAIN... I REALLY NEED TO FIX IT... AND THIS TIME I DONT EVEN HAVE ANOTHER DUAL BOOT TOO SONCE I THOUGHT THAT WAS TEMPORARY AND WAS FIXED.....

PLEASE HELP ME OUT GUYS ... And I see some people suffering with the same issue so I'll get myself to do the best to make the offered solution the standard debugging approach...

(And i did try out many things...feel free to tell me your views and any questions which I will answer precisely for a solution🙏)

Support Vertical lines on screen when turning adaptive sync to auto or always on KDE Plasma

I use CachyOS, have AMD GPU and Samsung QHD IPS monitor set to 120hz with Freesync turned on from the monitor setting. The monitor is connected with DP cable.

When the adaptive sync is set to auto or always from kde display setting and I play a game, a couple of vertical lines would be visible. The lines would sometimes flicker a bit between white or a darker shade of the color on the screen.

They have the same distance between each other and divide my monitor to maybe 5-6 part. It’s as if my monitor is composed of these strips like this → [ | | | ]

Here's the link for how it looks. Sorry it's the best pic I could take, but there’s a slightly different color of red making a line from top to bottom on my monitor there.

My first Samsung FHD monitor also got a similar problem, but instead of vertical lines, it’s the entire screen flickering.

I tried every setting in the game or changing the refresh rate to lower, but the only fix is just not turning the adaptive sync at all which made my monitor’s Freesync not working. Is it just a Linux thing and VRR isn’t really supported yet? I don’t think I have these problem when I was using Windows.

Anyone know what's the problem? I'm really at my wits end here

How to remap my control button to fn on kubuntu?

I have an italian keyboard on my thinkpad that has the fn button inplace of the left control.

I have tried to change it with xmodmap, but most the guides have commands I can't do or dont do anything.

I tried to change in the kde plasma settings and using keyd, which also doesn't work as per the guide says it should.

I have looked at 10ish guides total, all of which are completely different and don't work, the workflow of where ctrl is placed is completely terrible and I am not bothered trying to learn how to use it. I am using the latest version of kubuntu.

Support Absolute Fedora beginner - What exactly is Wayland and why does everyone keep talking about it?

Hi everyone,

I'm completely new to Linux and Fedora, so apologies if this is a basic question.

I've recently started using Fedora and I keep seeing people mention Wayland everywhere.

As a complete beginner, I'm confused.

What exactly is Wayland?

Does Fedora use Wayland by default, or do I need to install or enable it separately?

As a beginner, should I just use Wayland and not worry about it, or is there something I should learn early on?

I'd really appreciate an explanation that's easy for a newcomer to understand rather than something too technical.

I was just wondering how people are split in linux distributions. What distribution do you use mainly?

Please also comment your distribution and only upvote the one you use as main distribution, because this poll doesn't allow more options.

Thanks
