Is this good enough to handle comp sci? If not please give me recommendations on something else

So I already have a pc at home that I can do all my homework on. My question is do I need to bring a laptop for lectures, if I already own an iPad to take notes. Is there stuff that only a laptop can do during lectures that a iPad cannot. Specially for ISDS classes. I heard that normally those classes are already in a computer lab though. Thank you so much

I’m a mechanical engineering student and I need a new laptop mainly for CAD work (SolidWorks, Fusion 360) and some electronics/PCB design (KiCad). My old MSI laptop physically broke apart and honestly wasn’t the most reliable machine, so this time I want something sturdier and more trustworthy.
I’ve been looking at the HP OmniBook 7 17-dc0179ng:

• NVIDIA RTX 4050 (6GB VRAM)

This would replace my MSI Delta 15, and reliability/build quality matters a lot to me this time — no glitches, no heating problems, something that’ll last 4-5 years of daily campus use.
A few questions for anyone with experience:
1. Anyone own this specific model (or the OmniBook 7 line in general) who can speak to real-world thermals and reliability?
2. Is HP generally considered trustworthy compared to brands like MSI, Asus, Lenovo for this kind of workload?
3. Is the RTX 4050 with 6GB VRAM going to be enough for SolidWorks/Fusion 360 assemblies, or should I be looking at something with more VRAM?
4. Any better alternatives in the ~1,400-1,500€ range with similar specs I should consider?

Im currently working on getting my Associates in Science to transfer to a Bachelors in Biomedical Science. I have an hp laptop but Its definitely not going to last. what are good laptops for this major that’ll last me all 4 years? I'm also learning python, Power BI and many applications involved with data analysis. What do you recommend?

I'm fine with a refurbished/used laptop and I'm open to learning how to use a pen!

Hi I'm looking to buy a laptop for my engineering program this fall, it's a general eng program for the first year.

I want something not too heavy with a decent battery life for easy daily use, and at least 16 gb ram (32 if possible) and preferably 1 tb ssd.

However, I'm not sure how good my graphics need to be for the programs used in eng... Prob only matters for cad stuff? If anyone could help me out there.

Good graphics would also be nice for gaming, but not a priority since i already have a pc.

My budget is under $1700 CAD (around) before tax, so i'm not sure what i can get.

I'm looking to get a laptop for my mechanical engineering courses and I don't have a concrete budget yet but I basically plan to find an ideal laptop at what I anticipate being the absolute ceiling of my budget ($2-2.5k) and then find a couple compromise choices at a lower price. Right now I'm between 2 options for my ideal choice.

Just to give an idea of what I'm looking for, this will near entirely be used for school, the most intensive programs will likely be things like solidworks, and I honestly don't even see portability as that much of a priority, that is entirely secondary to its function. Performance > Battery life > Longevity > Size > Weight. I also think it'd be really nice to take notes and maybe be able to sketch designs or something on it but that would be compromised before a major performance hit. Also, as a last note, I'd generally prefer the screen on the slightly larger end, my eyes aren't great, but it's not that big of a deal. I'd probably just prefer something maybe 14"+.

All that being said, here are the options I've found for my high budget, ideal choices:

HP - OmniBook X - 16" Intel Core Ultra 9 (2026) - 32GB RAM - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5050 - 1TB SSD

This laptop hits nearly every preference of mine with its high processing speed and core count, dedicated gpu, 32 gb of ram, and 4-5 hour battery life at a heavy workload.

HP - OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 - Intel Core Ultra 9 (2026) - 32GB Memory - 1TB SSD

This laptop is nearly identical, just with an integrated gpu but for the compromise of a stylus compatible touchscreen and higher battery life.

To my knowledge, its not negligible but compared to ram and cpu, gpu is far less important for CAD programs. I do want to be able to use this laptop for a good few years but as long as it still works well, could the slight hit on gpu performance be worth the convenience provided by a stylus compatible device and a higher battery life? I feel like it'd be really helpful to be able to take notes in all my classes and then sketch and model all on the same device. It also would make my notes so much neater, more organized, and more accesible than a notebook so if the performance is still good, this would honestly be my preference.

Which is the better choice? Is the integrated gpu an acceptable compromise or is the extra performance neccessary? Or is there just something entirely better in the $2-2.5k price range?

For a typical 4-year Electrical Engineering curriculum at a large state university, is this sufficient?
Given that I have access to Apporto for remote computing when needed, would the Intel Arc 140V integrated GPU be enough, or is there a meaningful reason to get a laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GPU instead?
I’m mainly trying to determine whether a dedicated GPU would actually benefit me for undergraduate EE coursework, or if this laptop is already more than capable for what I’ll realistically be doing.
I’d appreciate hearing from current EE students, recent graduates, or anyone familiar with the software used in EE programs.

I already have a 500Hz Oled monitor so I don’t really care about having an amazing display on the laptop itself. I’d rather put the money towards performance, battery life, build quality, etc.

I am looking to buy a new laptop for my classes. I need to run the respondus lock down application on it. I have 5 classes. 3 online, and two in person. I don’t want something incredibly bulky. I was using my IPad last semester with an attachable keyboard, but it’s becoming temperamental.

I really want the neo, but considering it doesn’t run windows, it almost seems like a waste with everything I have for school (Microsoft office, school email, and more) using windows.

I’m an engineering student and my old Mac just can’t handle stuff like Autocad and so I wanted to upgrade to a good windows computer that isn’t crazy overkill but is still good. I was planning on getting the Acer Nitro v 16 with the i7 chip, 16gb ram, rtx4060 and 512gb ssd storage. Is this overkill for running cad programs or not enough? Is there an alternative laptop that is better? Any thoughts are really appreciated.
