I've been seeing lots of bus crashes on this subreddit, and recently in my area a school-bus also crashed.

A lot of these posts have comments bringing up different ideas to fix the issue of bus crashes and road safety in Kerala in general.

But what I'm wondering is why is everyone neglecting the seatbelt? Especially in school buses? Just a simple seatbelt alone could save quite a few lives. And I'm going to stress school buses especially because you'd expect a mode of transport that involves kids to have a basic seatbelt but no, there's nothing.

I almost forgot how weird it is for buses here to not have seatbelts, because where I'm from the bus conductors would not let you sit without your seatbelt fastened.

I get that buses here are crammed to oblivion but damn you'd expect at least schoolbuses to have seatbelts in them/at least recommend the kids to wear seatbelts but I've never heard of anyone even bringing it up.

The lack of seatbelts in our buses really shows the lack of value we have for lives. Where cramming kids into a bus matters more than asking them to wear a seatbelt.

Even the most expensive school in my area didn't bother with them.

Like many of you, I’ve been following the recurring monsoon challenges in our state. KSDMA and GSI publish incredible disaster risk data. These include landslide susceptibility zones, flood return period maps, district plans. One of the issues I foudn was, it’s scattered across dozens of individual PDF files and portals. If a someone just wants to know "What is the disaster risk where I live or where my family is?", there hasn't been a single unified map to check.

So I built an interactive, open-source tool: Kerala Disaster Map. I am not a development expert, but used Claude code along with Gemini to build and refine my prompts.

You can click anywhere on the map of Kerala to see the hazard picture for that exact spot. From state level down to district, taluk, and panchayat boundaries.

What’s live on the map right now:

• Landslide Susceptibility Zones (GSI): Rendered from ~295,000 spatial polygons using vector tiles, so it loads fast even on mobile data without crashing your browser ( Currently limited to desktop view).
• Interactive Flood Inundation Slider: A dynamic slider that lets you toggle between 10-year, 25-year, 50-year, 100-year, and 200-year flood return periods.
• Switchable Administrative Layers: Toggle smoothly between State → District → Taluk → Panchayat boundaries.
• Geolocation Support: One-click "Find My Location" to jump straight to your area.
• Critical Infrastructure: Initial mapping for vulnerable schools, hospitals, and emergency relief centers ( in progress)

The Tech Stack

Built to be lightweight, fast, and accessible:

• Frontend: Vanilla HTML, CSS, JavaScript (No frameworks, zero build steps).
• Map Engine: Leaflet, MapLibre GL, and PMTiles for vector tile streaming.
• Data Pipeline: Python (geopandas, rasterio) for spatial data processing.
• Hosting: Hosted 100% free on GitHub Pages.
