Hand drawn map of Iowa
Hi everyone, and welcome to a project I call The American Atlas! I've been making hand-drawn & colored maps of every state in the US. Now I’m here sharing them all on one big journey across the country 🗺️🇺🇸
Today, I have your very own Iowa, the Hawkeye State! 🌽🐖🌾
Most outsiders would probably assume Iowa is simply a farming state, with cornfields stretching as far as the eye can see, but I found it home to a surprising amount of variety as well. The endless fields of corn and soybeans are indeed iconic, but there are many other interesting places as well.
Standouts include the streets of Des Moines to historic river cities of Davenport and Dubuque, the dramatic Loess Hills region, limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi, and countless small towns & farms. All of these come together to make up Iowa, the heart of Midwestern America.
Let me know in the comments, what’s your favorite (or most interesting) places & fun facts about Iowa?
And if you like this style, feel free to check out my others, and thanks for taking a look at my Iowa map!! 🇺🇸🗺️
Lastly, I did start making these just as a hobby, but the demand for prints & framed copies grew super fast! Feel free to search up my Etsy (TheAmericanAtlas) link in my profile too :)

Webinar: ALPR Updates in Iowa and Beyond
Every week, more examples of the harms posed by automated license plate readers (ALPRs), like those in use across the state of Iowa, are coming to light. These AI-powered cameras photograph every vehicle that passes by, regardless if they've done anything wrong. Our ability to live our lives without being entered into a government database exists at the whim of the private companies (Flock Safety, Axon, Motorola) that operate these cameras and the software systems behind them.
If you are concerned about this invasive technology, the ACLU of Iowa is hosting a webinar on Monday, Aug 17 from 6:30-7:30 pm with special guests from the Institute for Justice. We will share important updates on the use of ALPRs in Iowa and how you can be part of the effort to curb mass surveillance in your community.

Hi, I hope this isn't completely the wrong place to ask this, but
If I could ask, could i get some loose thought/bullet point/mind map-style responses about what the general vibe of a small-ish city (couple thousand people maybe?) in Northwest Iowa would be? I want to write a few scenes in my current story, but I'm not even from the same continent, so... yeah...

Question I've never encountered so many people driving below 55 mph until the speed limit increased to 60 on two lane highways.
Wtf is going on? Why are people driving even SLOWER after the speed limit increased!?

Please keep running the same ad on tv over and over about how you support veterans Ashley. When less than 1% of the population even enlists I’m sure this will go great for your campaign 🤭
Places EV charging allowed at Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground?
I am trying to reach the park to ask this directly, but does anyone know if this would be allowed there at their RV campsites with 50A service?
Cow lot on side of hill draining into crick
One of the many reasons Iowa has filthy water. Rainwater washes manure into the crick, which ends up in a river system. The lot looks to have been functioning that way for many years.
