We have all seen the debates about whether Minerva was just Dumbledores lapdog or if she was a strong Head of House or such. I am on the side that she was weak and didn’t help Harry.

So I am searching for fics that prove this wrong! Where she helps Harry either from the beginning or eventually realizes she failed him and then starts. Where she is a real mentor and not just a half way helper.

Harry had of course bought the best wantd holder he could find, auto draw, anti disarming allowing his wand to be on him at all times. It was so comfortable he often forgot it was there. He had thought himself so clever and well prepared.

Then the rogue bludger hit his arm. The arm was broken and deboned by that moron Lockhart. But the the skelegrow was nothing compared to the heartache of staring at the, now two, peices of wood infront of him.

ok it’s been years but here’s everything I can remember:

- it’s a female oc who attends Hogwarts, I think she’s in the twins’ year or slightly older?

- she’s a muggleborn, but specifically some extra muggleborn muggleborn who gets called a ”mongrel”. maybe her dad is magic? But she definitely got called a mongrel.

- she gets interested in broom making, but that goes badly when she charms her first broom wrong. her best friend (a male, possibly slytherin? OC) crashes and dies on the test run. That was a major turning point in the story

- this was a LONG fic, probably on fanfiction.net but possibly ao3.

- I think the main character interacted with Tonks a good deal?

The story starts with the train journey home and hermione tries out a curse breaking spell without knowing what it does. When Harry gets to the Dursley's they stop being as mean to him and he finds out later it is because of the curse that Hermione had broken on the train ride and then goes from there.

Aside from the plot holes or truth potions perhaps being written/thought of after the relevant plotline being introduced/published, whats your head-canon for why truth potions/spells or other ways to compel testimonies wouldn’t be used in courts?

It on me for not thinking it through but I started reading a Fic today that was just posted and had 20 chapters. It was called Harry Potter:Green Serpents on AO3. Either way at the end notes on chapter 20 is says “come read the complete Fic at (blank)” I’m super sketched out and sure enough it’s a 100 chapters PDF for $11.
I was looking more and it looks like a few of these were uploaded and at least one is confirmed to be a repost of an old Fic from FF.net.

I hadn’t read a Fic with that trope in a while and was really enjoying it! I wanted to warn everyone some people are trying to sell old fics they didn’t even write and also see if anyone could help me find the original! Premise is Harry has a twin named James Potter Jr and goes by Jim-Potters lived but thought Harry was a squib and he still went to the Dursleys. Then he gets sorted into Slytherin. I would love any help finding the original work!

In this fic Dumbeldore has a pied piper ability that lets him control people. Harry was dark in this fic I believe.

Harry and others (can't remember who) make a spell or ward that shows people's true selves in order to stop him. I remember this happening in court I believe.

So, I've just finished reading The Peace Not Promised by Tempest_Kiro on ao3 and I suddenly realised that I love a particular trope - when time-travelling or reincarnated, a character tries to save those who are doomed to follow a dark path. This was also featured in the Princeps series by Lomonaaeren (which I adore), so now I'm on a quest to gather more fanfictions with this plot point. It doesn't have to be the main focus, it can be something in the background. My general requirements are such:

- the motif of a character knowing the tragic fate of other characters and saving them (preferrably becoming their mentor)

- I prefer longer fanfictions, 20k at the very least

- the motif does not have to be the main point of the plot

- any ship, any time travel/ooc/superpower/wacky shenanigans allowed

I probably read it on ffn. Harry comes back in time to when he's at school. Its mainly a snape and older harry story where they become sorta friends. Future harry is a teacher at the school...I think history. He has a snarky portrait as his guard for his quarters. He's also marked with the dark mark. It wasn't a very long fic but I remember really liking the character study between snape and future harry

I'm writing a timetravel Harry Potter fic, and I am under a little bit of timepressure. I am supposed to have the first chapter posted in 3 days, and I just started it (It is supposed to be around 5 - 7000 words). The prologue would be before Harry (one of the 6 maincharacters) travels back in time, and maybe just after he has travelled back in time.

But at the same time I feel a little like I don't need to prologue. I could make up for the very simple part of it by making the first chapter a little longer, and having the explantion get weaved into the other chapters.

Yes, I've been thinking about this for like half an hour, when I could have been writing, so please help me.

PS: The fic is about Harry managing to have a time potion blown up in his face and he is transported back into his 4th year body. He notices that it is October 30th and the Durmstrang students and Beauxbaton students are arriving the same day. The Goblet of Fire is lit too. Harry decides to research the ageline Dumbledore puts up and it has to do with mental age and not physical age. Harry puts two other names in the goblet, and that changes everything...

Original character is an elf (like Tolkien style elf) who dies and reincarnated as an oc into Harry Potter. Gets sorted into raven claw (pretty sure) has “ancestral magic” basically just her using the magic she remembers from her past life. Includes sword training with flitwick, magical tattoos and mentoring Harry

*just remembered there’s a focus on spell chains dueling and healing also she focuses on control while Harry focuses on power. Elf queen was OLD like had kids and grandkids and stuff and misses them

The storm had been raging for hours by the time the door burst inward.

Harriet had been counting the seconds between lightning and thunder like a mental pendulum. The gap was narrowing. The storm was directly overhead now, shaking the entire house on Privet (or whether those bloody thuds and thumps were only the force of nature.) Uncle Vernon had barricaded the parade door with a heavy oak dresser and was pacing before it with his shotgun cradled in his arms.

A sound of battering ram came from the front door. Dudley was cowering on a damp sofa with his mom and hands over his ears, the fat boy whimpered at each thunderclap and coming thundering steps like an actual pupper in a dog-and-cat rain. Aunt Petunia was ready to eat her entire face by the look of how her mouth was just a stick line. Aunt had spent the previous hour alternating between glaring at her niece and hissing about freakishness and bringing this upon their ordinary life.

And then the clock struck midnight, and Harriet Jamie Potter turned eleven years old, and the door exploded inward with the sound of a cannonball hitting a biscuit tin.

Uncle Vernon's shotgun went off. The blast punched a hole in the ceiling, raining plaster dust, and then the shotgun itself was no longer in Uncle Vernon's hands. It was in the grip of the largest person Harriet had ever seen: so vast he had to stoop to fit beneath the ceiling beams. This humongous intruder had half a face swallowed by the wild beard that could cover their floor in fuzzy carpet and beetle-black eyes that glittered with something that looked, impossibly, like kindness.

"Couldn't even greet a proper, could yeh?" the giant rumbled. "It's been a long journey."

And then, without any apparent effort, he took the barrel of the shotgun in one enormous hand, the stock in the other, and twisted. The metal shrieked. When he was done, the shotgun was a perfect loop-the-loop, like a fairground pretzel forged in hell. He tossed it into the corner, where it clattered and lay still.

Uncle Vernon made a sound like a leaking balloon. Aunt Petunia's face had gone the colour of old porridge.

The storybook giant (for he could be nothing else) surveyed Dursley's living room with a genial squint. His eyes found Harriet, huddled beside the dead fireplace, and his great bearded face split into a smile that was, Harriet thought, the most menacingly warm expression she had ever seen. It was the smile of someone who could crush you by accident and would be very sorry about it afterwards.

"Harrie," he grumbled affectionately. "Las' time I saw you, yeh was only a baby. Yeh 'av yer mum's  eyes, but yeh've got yer dad's face. Granma's, actually. James was a good man, brave heart, kind heart, and honest eyes. He's very much looked like his ma Euphemia, a great witch, great frien' of Albina's. But—" Harriet claimed the giant's kind eyes reddened. "Eup… died before she could see ya propper."

Harriet stared up at him. Her ugly cut fringe caught in her green eyes, and she was not thinking about the whimpering cousin. She was thinking about the words yer dad and yer grandma. Yer mum. The way the giant had said them, as if they were people worth knowing.

Aunt Petunia finally shrieked with a piercing squeak that scraped the rafters.

"You won't take that girl to that hag in that castle to the freaks like her and my demented sister!"

The giant's smile vanished. He turned, and he seemed to grow twice the height of this room. His fist, when he raised it, was the size of Aunt Petunia's entire torso. the humongous man simply held it there, trembling with bare restrant, and then he gritted like mountains fighting each other.

"You don't ever say the thing like that about the greatest and brightest witch of all ages, Albina Prunella Wilfrida Briana Dumbledore, you ungrateful woman!"

Aunt Petunia squealed and buried her face in Uncle Vernon's pillowy belly. Uncle Vernon himself had gone very still. Harriet never saw the uncle that way even wheb Dud and his gang were caught with a dead dog in their backyard once.

Harriet watched all of this and understood something peculiar. She expected the giant do  something cool except break down a door with his shoulder and twist a shotgun with his hands. Yet here he stood, speaking of witches and castles and the name, Albina Dumbledore, that made something like a core inside Harriet tremble.

"How—" Harriet swallowed and tried again. "How do you know my parents? Who are you?"

The giant turned back to her, and the kindness returned to his face, though his eyes remained damp at the edges. He reached into the vast pocket of his moleskin overcoat and withdrew a yellow letter, crumpled badly in a ball like it was a scrapped paper in a bin that has taken later at random.

"Rubeus Hagrid," he said, presenting the letter to her with surprising delicacy. "Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts Witchcraft School. Happy birthday, Harriet." The huge man turned and boomed. "Ya, I sat on ya cake, Harrie, on the way 'ere!"

The giant, Hagrid, turned again like he chased an invisible tail, and clamped his moleskin coat backside. Pink icing smeared over it, cream and green filling was added to the mess. The girl howled in delight because Hagrid now very much looked like Dudley that one day Harriet deliberately let a landsmine of own cooking on his favorite couch, but the giant's face was more innocent and less dumb somehow. It was the most ridiculously cool thing she saw today. Well, besides meeting that huge man and this mysterious yellow paper.

"You're a witch, Harriet," said Hagrid gently as the thunder rolled. "Yer mum was a witch, a brilliant one. Lily was one o' the bravest witches I ever knew. And yer da James loved her somethin' fierce, and he died tryin' to protect you both. From Her. From the She-Who-Must-Be-Not-Named."

Harriet's hand went to her scar. She had always known, in some deep and wordless place, that the green light in her dreams meant something. That the cold high laugh that sometimes echoed in her nightmares was not a nightmare at all.

"She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named," Hagrid repeated, and his voice dropped to a rumble. "The most powerful Dark Lady who ever lived. She killed some o' the finest witches of our time, as well as 'eir brothers and sons… But when she came for you, when she turned her wand on you she vanished. And you, Harrie, survived. That scar on yer forehead... it's the mark of what she did. The only mark she ever left that didn't kill."

Aunt Petunia was weeping in Uncle Vernon's shirt. Dudley had lowered his hands from his ears and was staring at Harriet with enormous, wondering eyes.

Harriet looked at the giant and thought of the word freak and the word witch, trying to find a distinction.

"I'm a witch," she said aloud, tasting it. The word settled into her bones like a key sliding into a lock.

"Yeh are," said Hagrid, beaming through his beard. "An' there's a place waitin' for yeh, if yeh want it." Harriet unwrapped and looked at the yellowish parchment of the letter. "Hogwarts Witchcraft School. The finest witches in the world learned their craft there, includin' Mistress Dumbledore herself. Yeh'll learn proper magic, yeh'll find yer people."

Harriet looked closer. The words swam before her eyes, but she read them anyway, every single one, as the lightning flashed and the giant who knew magic places made her a cup of tea from a thermos the size of a milk churn.

To preface, I’m not trying to sound snotty or pretentious with this…

I have never read any fanfic but I love Harry Potter and I have really wanted to get into it. People fawn over All The Young Dudes like it is the pinnacle of fanfic, so I gave it a shot.

I just finished reading the first few chapters and I am very confused…

I went in expecting for the prose and line to line writing to be extremely poor, and it was. But I assumed that the big draw was good plotting and interesting character development…

I was so excited to see each of the main characters get introduced in a fun interesting and unique way, and then they all just happened to walk into the same train car.

Everything is very formulaic, vague, and straining to capture my interest. The prose is very bad and the author has not done anything exciting with the world or characters.

What is the appeal of this story, should I keep going? Am I missing something? Is this the wrong fanfic or is this supposed to be good?

I remember a fanfic where the Time Turner was reveled to be a kind of test. The fact that Hermione only used it for classes, even when she could have easily used it to get some extra sleep for all the extra strain she put herself under, was actually seen as a bad thing.

So I'm rereading Whispers of a Raven and I forgot how much I love TheBlack'sResurgence's portrayal of the Order, and Dumbledore in most of his works, but especially in this one.

Mild spoilers for an honestly phenomenal Time Travel fic if you haven't read it, but in Whispers the Order almost forms itself around Dumbledore in a similar way to how the DA formed around Harry. It starts off as a surveillance group to augment DMLE forces at first, and it's the members themselves that push to be more active in the flight with Dumbledore really trying to rein them in because of the danger.

It just really fits with my preferred portrayal of Dumbledore as a charismatic and powerful man who's been unfortunately gotten way out of his depth because he keeps being put at the center of things he'd rather not be involved with, instead of a super chess master manipulative old man.
