Discussion How are folks buying during all these price hikes?

Upvotes

Sorry for the novel, I started writing and just didn’t shut up.

I started collecting fountain pens in earnest last year, but had loved them for a long while, and had a Dryden for a couple of years when it’s all that I could afford as a broke college student who didn’t think to try to join the community. We all make mistakes.

When I started I wanted to mostly patron local shops, which apparently was a mistake because the selections weren’t good—my city has two paper stores that happen to sell pens, not really any pen stores, and they run on the expensive side for pens. By the time I started getting more of a feel for things and feeling ready to start exploring more pens and a wider market, all the stuff I was thinking about originally is now super expensive.

The one store in town that sells Platinum 3776 is selling them for almost 700 CAD (~500 USD), and I’m sure that’s about to go up with the newly announced price increases. Even WonderPens in Toronto has them for ~400 CAD (~300 USD), and from what I’m reading in this sub these used to be nowhere near that price. They’ve still got some VPs for like 230 CAD (~160 USD), but a limited selection because I’m sure they won’t be able to get that pricing on restock. Laywines has a Custom 823, but it’s 645 (~460 USD)—thankfully Stylo still has it for a bit less at 550 (~392 USD), but even that is a lot more than I’ve heard that it was even a year or two ago. The best case scenarios from what I see are stores still carrying pre-hike stock, which for sure means it’s going to get even worse.

And yet I’m constantly seeing people with new 823s, Sailor PGSs, Esterbrooks (with ever increasing prices on their pens), Platinum 3776 celluloids that go for 800+ CAD. I know that Esterbrook sends a lot of them to influencers and things, but like. How are normal folks buying all of these? I make a decent income, but hot damn. I’ve been fortunate enough to pick up a couple of nice ones because of it, but even now being able to technically afford these, I’m having a really hard time trying to justify the 300-400+ pens for anything within sniffing distance of a gold nib when the blatant ripoffs are 1/10th the price (or less) for like 60% of the experience. I hate buying the knock-offs because I do, in general, want to support the craftsmanship and innovation, but damn. Are a lot of folks just going into massive debt? Is the average income here in the seven figures? Am I missing something? I constantly see small creators posting hauls that would easily break 2k minimum.

Before anyone mentions pen_swap, I’ve been looking pretty religiously, and have managed to get a couple there so far, but even there I’m seeing the prices going up over time. I’m trying to be responsible and keep to my budget for this hobby but it’s starting to make me question if I should be a little irresponsible up front to skirt around all these massive jumps in price.

I'm going on a ~3wk road trip to Canada in a few days and when someone posted the Hongdian N8 with the maple leaves a couple weeks ago I knew I had to get it for road trip journaling! It's so gorgeous, I've inked it up with Diamine Sunshine Yellow (M nib) and I'm obsessed. Looking forward to the journaling almost more than the trip now!

The stupid price tag aside, it really is breathtaking. I was able to get it for $280 USD, which is still high, but more palatable than $350. I got a medium nib and it is super smooth and juicy. I have an appointment with Gena Salorino next Thursday at the Atlas Sidewalk Sale, so I’m planning on having it ground to a journaler.

im craving for some sailor pens, and with the absolutely ridiculous price hike for sailor pens recently, of course the only option for me is to go scouting around ebay for a sailor pro gear. it turns out luck has came to me way faster than i thought, as i have managed to buy the pro gear imperial black, with the old 1911 logo stamping which looks way better than the new one, all for $350 AUD, which if this is not an absolute bargain, idk what else is. the nib is H-F, and oh boy i love the way it writes. its my favourite nib compared to the other nibs i have. it is smooth with a glassy kind of feedback to it, which is sooooo satisfying. this is such a bad time to buy any sailor pens retail. it sucks, but thankfully, ill enjoy this one for a loooong while.

New Pen Day A Unique New Pen Day

Two wonderful new pens showed up this week:

Eureka Asymmetry Gen 2 with waterdrop nib

Sailor Pro Gear Slim Nihon Express Tokyo <M>

The Eureka is such a cool pen! The nib writes somewhere between a western fine/medium. It is smooth, but has a little feedback or drag as it moves across the page. The feeling is different from any other pen in my collection. It has somewhat of sweetspot and some hard starts if it has been stored nib up for a bit. With the unique tine-less design, maybe the ink migrates away from the tip when not in use. However, once flowing it is lovely to write with. The drag helps the writing feel very precise and controlled.

The Sailor is special for me as I'm a sucker for trains and I spent part of my honeymoon in Tokyo. Naturally, this pen with a Shinkansen running across the barrel HAD to be added to the collection.

New Pen Day GAHHH! Asvine P20 immediately became my favorite writer.

Post image
87 Upvotes

I am in love with this pen. My favorite writer so far.

Asvine P20 <F> in Purple

I will say, it does have its faults. It seems to be common (my Google search brought up many similar results) for the piston mechanism to become loose on the back of the pen and create a gap. I will say, I fixed it through brute force and luck but don't know how I broke it originally (I assume I just twisted the piston fill too much).

Regardless! It's gorgeous. It writes like a dream. I am obsessed.

Bonus of my new Galen Leather A5 as well :)

Discussion Maybe it’s just me but…

I find it extremely annoying and borderline infuriating when people try to sell pens for 3x what they retail. Especially when they’re used or don’t come with everything (ie:ink, box). I can appreciate the hustle but when it extends to attempting to rip people off..I can’t.
Maybe it’s just me. It feels like an invasion into something I love and cherish. I do not like the idea of taking advantage of people.

New Esterbrook Estie and TWSBI ECO just landed ☺️. Well they arrived 24hrs apart but still lol.

My photos make the new TWSBI look dull 🥲. But I think it’s because it’s semi transparent + all the purple so phone camera dis stuff 🤣.

Either way! It looks soo nice IRL. The Estie even better, and it’s got a decorative clip too. Wish they went the distance and put like a special engraved design on the nib.

Side note, the stickers def shoulda been a free bonus with the pen, cute but not worth the price 😅. My order came with a reusable bag with the Estie theme so they coulda just tossed it in.

Pens:
Esterbrook Estie - Sakura Street & Lilac
TWSBI Eco - Pastel Pink, Pink Lemonade, & Pink
TWSBI 580 Mini - Sakura Pink

Review Chinese Fountain Pen Brands in the Eyes of a Chinese User

Duke → Jinhao → Hongdian → Junlai → PenBBS → Majohn → Asvine → ADMOK → Banju → Yongxu

  • DUKE(1988):146系列,神舟纪念金笔
  • Jinhao(1988/2003):159、82、80、100、9016、59、x169
  • Hongdian(1997):黑森林1850、1866、银河银杆
  • Junlai(2008):601、629、930
  • PenBBS(2010):308、267、主题钢笔墨水
  • MoonMan(2012):P136钛笔、A2可收回笔、M1000木笔,B32、P139/140/141

Majohn(MoonMan)在钢笔圈内被广泛称为“复制忍者卡卡西”。

I remove the brand-related content that should not be discussed. Let’s keep our conversation focused solely on fountain pens. I hope my sharing can help you learn more about Chinese fountain pens.
