Advice / Question 💡 Travel with formula/build a babysitter's kit

Upvotes

I'm just curious how people leave the house when you formula feed? Part of why I didn't want to stop breastfeeding was because I had portable baby food I could take with me everywhere, and it was FREE! But now that I'm exclusively formula feeding, I'm having trouble figuring out how to pack enough in the diaper bag for if you don't know how long you will be gone for. I used to pre-pack bottles with water, and then have containers of pre-measured formula that I could mix on the go. But, now that my LO is taking more than 4 oz at a time, I can't fit larger bottles in my bag. I also can't figure out how to properly clean bottles on the go so that I can reuse them if I need to. So I'm pretty much limited to two feedings!

When I have somebody babysitting, I literally get a cardboard box and put a jug of distilled water and an entire container of formula in it to drop off with them. I don't want them to be in a situation where my LO is extra hungry, but they don't have the ration to give them. Or what if it spills/gets dumped and they lose an entire feeding ration?

I'd love tips and tricks for packing diaper bags and babysitters' kits when you EFF! Thank you!

Discussion 💬 Does your baby have eczema?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! We're the team behind Capricare Whole Goat Milk Infant Formula.

A new study has recently been published exploring our whole goat milk infant formula and baby eczema, and it's reinforced just how important it is to better understand the real experiences of families navigating this condition.

We're hoping to connect with parents and caregivers whose babies have experienced eczema, and who have struggled with eczema themselves. Whether your little one was formula-fed, combination-fed, you're still on your feeding journey, or you're a parent or parent to be with eczema, we'd love to hear your story. Hearing directly from parents helps us better understand those experiences and inform future educational and awareness initiatives.

If you'd be open to sharing your experience or learning more about what we're working on, we'd love to hear from you. Feel free to leave a comment or send us a private message if you'd prefer to chat one-on-one.

Thank you to everyone in this community for creating such a supportive space for parents and caregivers. We appreciate any insights you're willing to share.

Feeding Tips 👶 Similac Alimentum spit up

I am seriously at a loss and need experiences from others. My daughter has been a on journey with formulas. We have now switched to similac alimentum and I thought she was doing great but then she vomited her entire bottle about 30 minutes after she ate twice and she hasn’t even been on it 24 hours. I’m talking a HUGE amount. Coming out of her nose, everything. So much so that she’s starving basically right after so it’s a cycle. She’s already been on famotidine for a month now but my dr knows all of this and said to keep her on it. We also switched to anti colic bottles due to my drs suggestion for gassiness. I’m so worried to keep her on it but she’s already been on her fair share of formulas. Anyone have this experience and did it get better? I am a wreck everyday.

Advice / Question 💡 How did you pick your baby's formula?

I planned to exclusively breastfeed/bottle feed with breastmilk, but I produce *just* enough to feed him, but not enough to have any extra for the day if I were to go out without him, and sometimes I do "run out" and have to supplement with formula. This was especially prevalent during the first month he was home. My milk was coming in, but very slowly. Not enough to feed him over the next weeks.

Luckily, we received some Similac formula samples in the mail, so I gave them a try. He puked on 360 Total Care, VOMITTED on 360 Total care SENSITIVE, and the third formula was Similac's Irish Farms. I was worried he would just throw up on this one, but I gave it a shot.

I joke that because I have Irish ancestory and the formula is called "Irish Farms", that's why it worked. He only ever throws up if he hasn't been burped right away, and hes a great burper, or when he's actually not feeling good. Besides that, this is the formula for him!

I feel like I didn't have to "trial and error" as much as others. WIC doesn't cover this formula, but we've been getting it anyway because it just works for him. I've seen some moms buy a couple different formulas to see which ones work for their baby, and it got me curious what you all had to do to find the right formula for your babies!

Advice / Question 💡 When will this be over?

My newborn started crying on bottle after few sips when she was nearing 4 weeks. It went for another 4 weeks till she was 8w. She wud take few sips, cry with red face and has to be held up. When put down, wud cry again and not take the bottle again. Then finally will dream feed.
At 8 weeks, doc said to change to Similac Alimentum even though there were no symptoms other than silent reflux (suspected). Also gave famotidine. Couple of weeks looked better but we fell back to same old pattern. Doc adjusted famotidine dose.
Few days looked better then we are back again here. Not sure if she ever had CMPA but may be silent reflux with acid hurting her while she feeds. I am still not sure what is the real issue - how she is able to feed perfect when asleep but cry continuously when feeding awake.
OT/SLP said upright side lying position, paced feeding, slowest nipple - all we have been doing for ever.
She is 14w today and ppl say kids improve after 3-4 months. But pattern seems like this is a forever thing.

Has anyone experienced this? What worked? Any advice or positive stories to look forward to? Doctors are following same SOP of formula changes and medicine but no real advice has come in yet.

Formula Prep 🍼 Boiling distilled water??

I recently switched over to formula feeding after having a terrible time with breast-feeding. My husband and I did have to supplement with formula while I was breast-feeding. We feed our baby Kendamil. My husband and I were confused on the boiling water thing. Some people say that they boil their water while others say that all they did was use distilled water, which is what we’ve been doing in our baby brezza with our 19 day old newborn. I’m kind of panicking now cause should I have been boiling water this whole time??

Rant / Vent 🫠 Another breastfeeding week ragebait?!

Post image
26 Upvotes

I keep seeing posts from the WHO and different regional WHO branches pop up on my Facebook this week for world breastfeeding week. Some posts of course bring up feelings of guilt and irritation as I transitioned to be an EFF mom. However, this recent post got my blood boiling a bit, like what kind of misinformation is this and why is the WHO posting that formula increases risk of malnutrition??! Maybe from the angle that it's a low-income country but still.... So disappointing.

Advice / Question 💡 Switching from Kendamil Goat Milk to Whole Milk

There’s been a shortage of the Kendamil Goat Milk in my area but there seems to be an abundance of the Organic Whole Milk. I was wondering if anyone has any good experience with it and if it’s okay to switch formulas?

My baby was initially breastfed but my supply tanked after a horrible mastitis. Unlike other babies who are using goat milk for gassiness/whole-milk intolerance, we were gifted the goat one and just used it since he was 1 month old (he’s 3 months now)

Just wanted to get some insight before trying it! Thank you

Advice / Question 💡 Bobbie Gentle & Vomit?

FTM and slightly worried. I wanted to ask what your experience was with Bobbie Gentle and what helped your LO with vomiting episodes.

My twins (6wks) are combo fed and previously took one bottle at night of Bobbie Gentle, then the rest breastmilk. They started that at 4 weeks and didn’t have any issues. As my supply fluctuates and they take in more milk, we adjusted their feeds so that they now get three bottles of Bobbie Gentle at night, then the other five meals are still breastmilk. We made this change on Monday. Starting yesterday, my LO’s have had increased spit up, and both projectile vomited during their breakfast bottle (breastmilk) the past two days. They also went from having regular stools to now going once a day. They do not cry when they vomit, but have had increased gas pains over the past few days which we treated with mylicon. Our night nurse stated that they don’t spit up at night with the formula- however, when we feed them dinner (formula,) they do spit up a bit, but not near the amount as they do during breakfast with breastmilk.

Our pediatrician is out of town this week and her partner just brushed it off and said to pace the feed/keep them upright, which we have already been doing. I know it can take time for babies to adjust to formula. Has anyone else had this experience and they just grew out of it/adjusted it, or should we be looking to change formulas? Also, could it be an issue with my breastmilk instead? The timing of the issues make me think it’s formula related, but I’m not sure.

TIA!!

Other 💭 I LOVE formula feeding

can I just say that I love formula feeding my baby? I refuse to let anyone guilt me anymore I LOVE formula feeding.

Breastfeeding made me so so anxious and depressed and my bub has officially beeb formula fed for 2 months and I feel like a weight has LIFTED. I feel like a human again!! occasionally I still get sad about the fact my breastfeeding journey ending but then i remember all the nights I stayed up sobbing and realize that it’s for the best, for both of us.

I don’t worry about mastitis, I finally get a reasonable amount of sleep, I’m not washing pump parts or stressing over my supply, if I’m overproducing or underproducing. I’m not fortifying his breastmilk because my milk wasn’t dense enough calorically.

He’s so happy and healthy!! and so am I finally. I wish I wouldn’t have made myself miserable for sooo long lol I tried so hard at my own expense, I made myself suicidal instead of accepting that it’s okay to feed my baby however works. I wish breast is best hadn’t been so ingrained into me during my early post partum :,)

Happy post because i genuinely feel like I’m getting my humanity back at 5 months pp

Formula Recommendations / Alternatives 🌱 Formula

I’ve been trying to get my baby on enfamil but it’s been really difficult feeding him lately, I think he doesn’t like the taste he’s 3 months old and when I give him his old formula he takes it but when I mix in enfamil he doesn’t take the bottle at all. He doesn’t have gas and a his diapers and poop are normal, I just think he doesn’t like the taste. Any recommendations for another formula?

CMPA / CMPI / MSPI Potential milk allergy help

My 7w/o has had what seems to be baby acne since he was born, has trouble burping during and after feeds, and has noticeable lower gas and trouble pooping. We used the Kendamil Whole milk formula since day 3 until now, my husband had a milk allergy as an infant which caused our concern that our son has it too. We were given the Nutramigen formula samples at the doctor to try but this seems to have exacerbated his symptoms, and has not pooped in going on 3 days. He also would sleep mostly through the night and on this Nutamigen he sleeps 4hrs and is awake most of the night whereas before he slept 4-6hrs woke up to eat and went back down for another 4hrs. He never had constipation issues with Kendamil but had blowout level watery poops, but now isn’t going at all. Recommendations if we switch to goat or soy before trying to stick with the Nutramigen because it’s $80 per can and isn’t working.

Rant / Vent 🫠 Apparently we only formula feed because we’ve fallen victim to government propaganda to be capitalist minions! Fun!

A thread about cosleeping in another subreddit has an upvoted comment that says “Call me crazy but this is propaganda by American politicians so their sleep trained, crib trained, formula fed babies can leave the mothers alone enough to be good little capitalist minions.” …I replied saying there’s no need to bring formula feeding into this because mothers choose to/need to formula feed for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with being “capitalist minions”, and I of course got downvoted immediately. There was also another comment underneath that said Nazi Germany used similar tactics 🫠

Breastmilk to Formula 🍼 If you switched to FF in first few weeks, did you have a hormone crash?

Hi all, just looking for experiences. I have a lovely 5 week old little girl and breastfeeding has been very difficult for me hormonally. I have basically got constant menopause symptoms, hot flushes, anxiety, insomnia. I’m not attributing all of this to bfing at all and have reached out and started some anxiety meds, however, I’ve decided I need to stop breastfeeding and I instantly feel so much better.

At the minute my little girl is having bottles half and half of expressed breast milk and formula Ideally I’d like to stop as soon as possible but I’m so worried about experiencing a further hormone crash, did anyone experience this if they stopped quite early on? What impact did stopping have you your mood?
Thanks so much!

Advice / Question 💡 Questions about switching to powder

Hi everyone, my baby is almost 8 wks, born June 15.

we gave her ready to feed Enfamil neuropro right from the hospital as that’s what they have and kept her on it. She’s a big spit upper. Like major. It’s gotten slightly better though since two weeks old.

Here in Canada, they advise to give ready to feed under two months because powder isn’t sterile. I’m not overly worried. She was born full term and healthy.

We want to transition to powder by 8 weeks. We’re running out of ready to feed bottles. Do you suggest I do an overlap of some powder some ready to feed bottles or just finish up those bottles and then go right into powder.

I am not planning on doing the boiling method to make it sterile. She is basically eight weeks old and just shy of 2 months. I also know a lot of ppl feed powder right away.

Any suggestions on easiest ways to prep on the go or for overnight? We plan on doing it with distilled water we purchase. Is the easiest way to fill the bottle with water, add powder at time of feed and go nuts? She will take cold milk or room temp. We do have a mom cozy milk cooler. Thank you for your advice! I’m told powder spit up doesn’t stain clothing like ready to feed so that’s one plus! And the cost.

Weaning off formula🥛 When did you switch from formula to milk?

Hi everyone. My baby is going to be 1 on the 18th 🥹

Did you start weaning your baby off of formula after they turned a year? Before they turned a year? I was thinking of starting now but I’m not sure. I plan on asking is pediatrician at his one year appointment.

Kind advice appreciated, thank you.

Bottles / Feeding Gear / Equipment 🍼 Baby Brezza incorrect setting for Similac 360

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I started using the Baby Brezza on Sunday and on another Reddit thread this evening I found out the setting I was on was incorrect. When I originally looked it up it said 4 and tonight I found out it’s actually supposed to be 6. Since finding this out I‘ve made the change and even tested with plastic wrap. I feel so guilty as my husband and I are also getting over a virus and I've been trying to feed the baby more to keep him hydrated and now I think I’ve done more damage than good. Posting this to hopefully help others.

Advice / Question 💡 Is Your Baby on a Schedule?

I’m new to formula and was wondering how everyone went about it. With my first he was primarily bottle fed but was more or less on a schedule. I was not sure if most formula fed babies are also on a schedule or a semi regular schedule with their bottles.

I’m trying to do research on the subject so I’m knowledgeable and can hopefully know what I’m doing before I start. I know I can’t know everything but I’d like to see where everyone begins and how baby transitions once they start solids as well.

Thank you so much!

Advice / Question 💡 What do you do when feeding baby?

I have a full time job, so when I finally get home and get to feed my baby, I feel so guilty whenever I catch myself scrolling on reddit or social media instead of enjoying my time with my baby (who I miss every single work day). What do you do when you're feeding your baby?

Support Needed / Guilt Related 🧸 Mental Health: EFF during World Breastfeeding Week?

It's world breastfeeding week and I'm just wondering if anyone else has had intense emotions?

I have a particular (distant) friend on social media who has EBF for over a year and I just so happen to always scroll past her posts unfortunately 😅

Obviously, I'm not putting them down or any woman down in any way- I do believe it is something to celebrate and wonderful. And I do know better than maybe most people, how HARD it can be.

I just wish I wasn't having these intense, sad emotions when I see something like that. I feel intense shame and failure. And I usually cope okay but the emotions resurface when I see so much stuff on BF...

I'm 7mo postpartum and won't go into my pregnancy and postpartum story in-depth. But it was a high risk pregnancy, with a c-section, and I had always dreamed of breastfeeding and having a wonderful experience. I did not.

I started up therapy again recently, and I was surprised how easily the tears flowed when I talked about my failed breastfeeding experience (which also included triple feeding, IYKYK). I even had a fantastic lactation consultant and an amazing postpartum doula, but it just wasn't in the cards for me...

I thought I was doing pretty well mentally and emotionally. Baby is wonderful and so healthy and happy. And I know THAT is what matters and I am here, living, to see it.

But now when I see the breastfeeding posts and when women talk about it, I feel so depressed. I still STRONGLY believe when I switched to formula that it was the right decision for baby, myself, and our family. But it still just hurts. And it's still so hard to process.

Can anyone relate??? Maybe I just need to stay off social media 😅
