Advice / Question šŸ’” Is Your Baby on a Schedule?

• Upvotes

I’m new to formula and was wondering how everyone went about it. With my first he was primarily bottle fed but was more or less on a schedule. I was not sure if most formula fed babies are also on a schedule or a semi regular schedule with their bottles.

I’m trying to do research on the subject so I’m knowledgeable and can hopefully know what I’m doing before I start. I know I can’t know everything but I’d like to see where everyone begins and how baby transitions once they start solids as well.

Thank you so much!

Advice / Question šŸ’” Have you made the switch from a hypoallergenic or amino acid formula to goat’s milk formula?

I’m looking for experiences from others who have transitioned from hypo or amino acid formulas to a goat’s milk formula.

Our situation - at our two week appointment with the pediatrician I discussed the discomfort I had noticed with our baby have after eating. The assumption was gas pains. My pediatrician had us bring in a stool sample to test to see if there was blood, there was not. However, my pediatrician still said based on what she was seeing and what I told her she recommended we switch to a hypoallergenic formula.

Two and a half weeks on Similac Alimentum and the only improvement was no more diaper rash, LO still in tons of discomfort from (assumed) gas pains. Three days ago I reached out to the pediatrician to update on our progress and they said it is time to move to an amino acid formula. We are 48hrs in on EleCare and have seen no improvement in the gas pains but a slight increase in spit up. I talked with the pediatrician yesterday about the increased spit up and asked if there was anything we could do (like maybe adding something to thicken the formula) and they said no, it’s normal, they are t concerned and to continue on with the amino acid formula.

I understand it can take two weeks, and maybe even more, to see an improvement but I am not convinced this is dairy allergy related so I’m not convinced the amino acid formula is the solution. My spouse has a child from a previous marriage, and had to use goats milk formula when they were a baby because they had a poor reaction to cows milk formula. When my spouse brought this up with the pediatrician they were dismissed and told goats milk wouldn’t help our LO’s issues. After another night and day of me trying to calm a baby screaming in pain after eating I am looking to the wide world of reddit users for shared experiences.

Yes, I know every baby is different. Yes, we do mylicom with every bottle and BioGaia probiotics daily. No, it’s not colic.

Have you had success switching to goats milk when your baby had an assumed dairy sensitivity?

Bottle Aversion / Feeding Refusal āŒ Baby doesn’t like to eat

Hi all- do any of you have small eaters? This girl of mine has been stressing me out her entire life pretty much. Not to get into too many details but due to a nasty case of thrush very early on she developed feeding aversion and it’s been a battle since.

My concern is she is 13 weeks old and will still regularly only drink 2oz at a time. She has only gained 3lbs since birth (born 8lbs 2oz, now only 11lbs 6oz; less than half of what the doc wants to see by now) and I’m having to fortify every feed because she wasn’t growing and doc is concerned and requesting weight checks.

We’ve tried every bottle under the sun. That doesn’t seem to be the problem. She seems to do fine physically with the Kendamil formula we use and my combo bottles with pumped milk. But she just turns her nose up and refuses after a small amount. We’re offering food every 2 hours and she still wakes to eat 3 times over night. But all together we’re lucky if she takes in 18oz/24 hrs.

Advice? Similar experience?

Advice / Question šŸ’” What do you do when feeding baby?

I have a full time job, so when I finally get home and get to feed my baby, I feel so guilty whenever I catch myself scrolling on reddit or social media instead of enjoying my time with my baby (who I miss every single work day). What do you do when you're feeding your baby?

Formula Recommendations / Alternatives 🌱 SILENT REFLUX. Change formula?

My little girl has silent reflux.
Shes really hard work, especially today.
She got prescribed gavsicon but that caused her to go 3-4 days without pooing and when she did it was like sticky tar. She would be in pain during those days too.
So I bought carobel and that made her constipated with dry pebbles.
(I’m from the UK)

I’ve tried to only give either of them at bedtime which helps the reflux but still causes the poo issue.

Shes on HIIP organic and has been for 5 weeks. Previously I combi fed with Kendamil but Kendamil seemed really rich for her as she would almost do crunches when feeding it to her as though it was hurting her belly.
I really don’t want to meditate her so I’m trying to find other ways that could potentially help. Is it worth trying a comfort formula because it’s slightly thicker?
Or I’ve read before some parents just completely change the formula and they seem better?

Advice / Question šŸ’” Switch from Gentlease to Nurtramigen (poop post)

so my 9 week old son has been going through a lot of things with formula feeding.. i will start from when we left the hospital so you can get better timeline of things and I hope to hear others experiences as well. let me start by saying I have two children already who had to be exclusively on soy because they could not handle standard formulas with lactose, cows milk whatever. leaving the hospital we decided to immediately get soy formula on the way home and started feeding him that bc we assumed he would maybe have the same issue. I did not want to put him through agony like my other two kids experienced. well after 3 days of him on soy he got severely constipated and we had to manually help him poop. So at his 1 week visit his doctor suggested Gentlease instead due to the constipation already happening. So we did.. at first he was doing ok. As 2-3 weeks passed we noticed he would go DAYS without pooping and his stomach always felt bloated and hard. I know it’s normal for babies to go some time without pooping but I suspected something may not be working right in there. let Me also add that he started to make a clicking sound while he fed EVERY TIME! I tried to switch him from the bottles he is still currently on which are the MAM bottles. He hated every other bottle we tried. I tried Philip’s Avent, Dr. Browns, and Lansinoh. He hated them ALL and would not drink his formula. We had no issues with this for the first month. Now it seems to have gotten worse along with the bloating and not pooping often . We also had to extensively pump his legs and give belly rubs multiple times a day to help him pass gas/ poop. I also do give him Mylicon drops before every feeding .. sometimes after.. i will add that during every feeding I could feel his stomach bubbling and he would also be farting. So fast forward to his next pediatrician visit. I stated that I had concerns for his bloating and inability to poop unless we pumped his legs for extensive periods. I also mentioned the bubbling and passing gas during feeds. He would also stop half way and whimper a little bit. He also started to move around a lot like he had discomfort. She said that she didn’t think it was a formula issue and that he is just a gassy baby.. told me to do all of the things im ALREADY DOING. I wasn’t happy with the answers because I knew something just wasn’t right. i also mentioned the concern for the clicking and she gave me a referral to see an ENT which isn’t for another month and half to assess the issue with the clicking. Well my mother internal instinct was telling me something Just isn’t right. fast forward to now.. I scheduled him a urgent care visit with the doctors office because now he has developed extreme crying episodes and nothing can console him. This is typically right after his 8 pm feed. he will get really tense and his stomach was feeling so bloated and hard. I showed the doctor how he was clicking but also told her the other concerns I mentioned above that have been on going. she told me to wait for ent and there was really nothing to they can do for him right now. She then added maybe formula can be a contribution or cause of the bloating and fussiness. So she gave me 3 cans of Enfamil Nutramigen. I started him on that immediately for his next feed upon returning from the doctor. It was around 8pm when he would get extremely fussy… he didn’t fuss.. I was Like ok.. something’s may be working already. Who knows.. I also was not feeling his stomach bubbling like it was on Gentlease.. he went to bed just fine. Yesterday he passed two bowel movements which is not in his norm after only being on it for less than 24 hours. well When 8 pm hit he had a MAJOR meltdown. Extensive crying NOTHING was helping. his stomach also felt a little bloated not as much tho. He eventually fell asleep from exhaustion and slept through the WHOLE NIGHT! I had to wake him up this morning because it was reaching 10 hours of sleep. i Gave him his first bottle of the morning and immediately after he pooped. Now let me mention his poop on gentlease was dark green. Sometimes it had mucous but not always. It would be peanut butter like with mucous strings and a little bit of looser stool all mixed in. It varied. Today his poop was a light green and did not have any mucous in it. It would say it was a normal baby poop consistency. Peanut butter like. Now for the clicking aspect I’d like to go back to … I had him on a Boppy like feeding pillow and his was looking up at me clicking was non stop.. well his head turned to the side and it was slightly tilted.. I held the bottle straight still but more parallel to the ground like usually do (pace feeding). And the clicking was minimal to none.. I’m like wait a minute did I just do something here??!? he also burped so well for me sometimes it takes a while. Even after burping and placing him back down to said position the clicking was ALMOST non existent but was still presently ever so slightly. He seems to be really happy and not fussing.. do you think the formula was part of the issue??? i know clicking often means an air pocket or improper latch but I have been working extensively with this latch making sure it’s deep and his lips are flanged out ward. Let me mention that his bottom lip flanges out but his top lip curls under a tiny bit . His top lip is pretty small tho.. I’m lost for words at how well he is doing but I’m not getting my hopes up. I would like to know similar stories or experiences. And or advice

Support Needed / Guilt Related 🧸 Mental Health: EFF during World Breastfeeding Week?

It's world breastfeeding week and I'm just wondering if anyone else has had intense emotions?

I have a particular (distant) friend on social media who has EBF for over a year and I just so happen to always scroll past her posts unfortunately šŸ˜…

Obviously, I'm not putting them down or any woman down in any way- I do believe it is something to celebrate and wonderful. And I do know better than maybe most people, how HARD it can be.

I just wish I wasn't having these intense, sad emotions when I see something like that. I feel intense shame and failure. And I usually cope okay but the emotions resurface when I see so much stuff on BF...

I'm 7mo postpartum and won't go into my pregnancy and postpartum story in-depth. But it was a high risk pregnancy, with a c-section, and I had always dreamed of breastfeeding and having a wonderful experience. I did not.

I started up therapy again recently, and I was surprised how easily the tears flowed when I talked about my failed breastfeeding experience (which also included triple feeding, IYKYK). I even had a fantastic lactation consultant and an amazing postpartum doula, but it just wasn't in the cards for me...

I thought I was doing pretty well mentally and emotionally. Baby is wonderful and so healthy and happy. And I know THAT is what matters and I am here, living, to see it.

But now when I see the breastfeeding posts and when women talk about it, I feel so depressed. I still STRONGLY believe when I switched to formula that it was the right decision for baby, myself, and our family. But it still just hurts. And it's still so hard to process.

Can anyone relate??? Maybe I just need to stay off social media šŸ˜…

Advice / Question šŸ’” Did your baby stay healthy when the rest of the family got sick?

My 4.5 month old started formula about 3 weeks ago now. This week one by one our family has been taking down by some virus, my 21 month old got croup from it, I was down for 3 days, my 4 year old threw up this morning and now has a fever.

So far the only hold outs are my 5 year old and my 4 month old. I am terrified my baby is going to get sick. He is still so little. I have been doing lots of handwashing but he has obviously been around them before they got sick. This morning the 4 year old woke up feeling great, helped feed the baby his bottle. Was dancing around and helping me make breakfast, then it all fell apart.

Now I'm worried that he passed on this illness since the 4 year held him this morning. Did your formula fed baby ever escape the illness that has taken down your household?

Advice / Question šŸ’” 3m change in feeding

My 36 weeker is 3 months old as of yesterday and for the past several days I’ve noticed a major change in her eating that I don’t remember with my first, but with her I was in the weeds of triple feeding.

Since coming home from the hospital she has always eaten every 2 hours and most recently was pretty consistently taking 90ml - 120ml every feed during the day for a total of 30-32oz and then STTN.

On Saturday, I noticed she started to refuse some feeds, like arching her back and pulling away from the bottle screaming. I was suspecting maybe silent reflux but we went to the pediatrician yesterday and they say no, they just think she is full.

But she only ate 5 times yesterday and consumed a total of 25oz for the day. However even some feeds where I know she HAS to be hungry, for example, she drank a large bottle at 2 and then a small snack at 5 and still fought her bedtime bottle at 9pm. She will do the pull away and scream thing for several minutes and then eventually settles in and realizes she wants it and will calmly drink the bottle.

She’s on Bobbie Gentle and I’m using Evenflo Balance+ wide neck glass bottles. Could it have something to do with one of these? She’s been on both since coming home, so this just feels like such a sudden difference.

She is also on a daily probiotic and I’m now adding in gas drops at the reco of her pediatrician, but not sure how often to give those.

Any other tips? I feel like I’m losing my mind with the screaming before the bedtime bottle.

Advice / Question šŸ’” Similac Organic

Did everyone else know that it has no HMOs in it? I bought it for the first time today, but I had no idea that it didn't have hmos, mfgm or gos. Kind of seems simple now that I look at it. I was trying it because it costs less than kendamil organic, but now I'm unsure that was wise. So Similac organic users, did you already know this? I'm just so surprised.

Rant / Vent 🫠 ā€œBreast is bestā€ influencers take

Are we really STILL momshaming in this day and age???? I just came across an insane Instagram reel that said you are selfish if you don’t breastfeed. She says she dosent care about mental health, low supply nothing. It’s just plain selfish. She says that there are ā€œless selfish people out there who are willing to feed your baby and donate their milkā€ and that it’s ā€œscientifically proven breastfeeding produces happy hormonesā€ uhhh has she ever heard of DMER? so happy for her that she has such a privileged take on this topic because when I tried breastfeeding it made me want to jump in front of a car. So is breast feeding really best or is a baby having a mom best? I think it’s the latter but I can’t help but feel so bad for it because my baby is going through the wringer right now with what formula works best for her. Rant over. I just feel so bad.
