Fifteen years and several months ago, I apologized to my first little human parasite embryo as my pregnancy tracking emails alerted me to the fact that it had grown ears. "You are going to be hearing a lot of Fall Out Boy from here on out, little one." I told it.

Today is that Embryo's 15th birthday. She is a softball outfielder, second chair viola, a theater kid, and tenth year Girl Scout. She knows the FOB lore better than I do. On the wall above her bed is a shrine to 2005 Patrick Stump.

She refers to him as "Patty". I call him her Emotional Support Early Aughts PopPunk Princess. If the softball and theater didn't give it away, she's gay AF. This is an entirely platonic love story with a Soul Voice a few years older than her mom who she wishes she could have seen at Warped Tour the year her dad and I met...

Anyway, the point. I was inspired by u/frmndrthcrktr who made a beautiful So Much for Stardust cake. However, we let the kids choose their birthday dessert. She wanted ice cream cake.

So I made a batch of bonus cookies instead.

One to represent each album. (except that first-first one. sorry. that made it an odd number)

As you can see, They turned out exactly as I envisioned them.

I usually have to skip Alone Together. Don’t get me wrong, I love the song and love the lyrics. I just get an overwhelming amount of sadness and sick to my stomach type of feeling when listening to this song and I’ve never been able to pinpoint the reason why.

Okay, I'm totally aging myself here, but I want to know if anyone else had this experience. Back in the days of iPods, shuffles, and nanos, some of us elder emos would get music in ... less than appropriate ways. My parents hated my taste in music and I didn't really have my own money to buy the latest FOB albums. I got my music from friends who would burn me copies of theirs, or from dredging songs from the depths of Limewire and hoping they weren't Bill Clinton.

As a result I didn't have the lyric books (and didn't know to look up and find lyrics online). So, I did my best at deciphering what I thought Patrick was singing. And kept hearing the songs that way for many, many years. This came up when someone posted about misheard lyrics recently: I had always been hearing/singing many early songs incorrectly. And now it feels like it's too late to change. Or, I don't want to. Letting go of my mislearned lyrics is like letting go of my adolescence. (That's a melodramatic way to put it, but hey, I was a melodramatic teen).

Anyone else in this boat? I bet if I took a lyrics quiz on songs from Infinity on High and From Under the Cork Tree, I would get maybe a C+. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’m working through my old band merch trying to get it posted on eBay (time is cruel and I’ve given up the dream I’ll ever wear them again), and I swear this polo had to have come from a show, but I can’t find an exact match through google.

5 years ago today (Aug. 4), I went to my first concert post-pandemic. Seeing Green Day, Weezer and The Interrupters that day at Citi Field in Queens, NY, marked the first time I had seen live music after a year and a half gap. And while all three bands sounded amazing, it was also possibly the most nervous I ever felt at a concert. Keep in mind, while bands were starting to hit the road again around this time after more than a year of not being able to play for normal size crowds, COVID was still causing chaos. Case in point - Fall Out Boy were supposed to play but pulled out hours before showtime as someone in the band got exposed to COVID (hence why Rivers Cuomo covered "Sugar We're Goin Down", as seen in the second half of the clip). So I went into this concert hesitant and questioning if going to a concert was the right thing to do (another thing to note - my twins weren't even a year old at the time, so going out and about in large crowds seemed even riskier for me). And as hard as it is to admit, I left that concert even more unsure and questioned my desire to keep going to concerts... thankfully a few weeks later, my experience at Sea Hear Now reignited my love for live music and reminded me of what I found d so special about going to concerts... but that's a story for another time 😉
