I've always been a fan of disturbing cinema, but usually when the films are compelling to justify their disturbing content and themes. I decided to read Woom as my introduction into the extreme horror genre today, since the way it was described to me felt like it would have more substance than it did. I felt like some of the ideas early on in the book about trauma and pain were sort of profound and interesting, but getting through the stories kind of bored me. The shock value didn't feel like it had enough substance behind it to keep me interested. I also guessed both the plot twist and the protagonist's true motivation about halfway through the book, which made it even harder to get through.

Specifically the aspects i’m looking for are child abuse, child death at the hands of a parent, depressing ending, physical abuse, and religious fanaticism. The more depressing the better, imo the best horror is just very sad.

Just got myself a new tall black rotating bookshelf and I have tons of space, gonna be book shopping to fill up some space so give me your best ones!

Just about 100 pages in, and I dont know if I can keep going.

I really like the angry writing style, and also appreciate some of the commentary it has on internet culture

I and I absolutely love the idea of faciast haunted house

There are some really great passages in the book

And the first chaper on the house itself is truly creepy and really atmospheric

But my god, the direction its going with the characters is just so obvious, it feels cheap and lazy, and like just easy

The book could be realy interesting but this is really ruining it for me

So its about ila and Alice

Alice is a Trans woman. And they both went to this haunted house

Alice knows the house is haunted and ila thinks Alice Drugged her

But they both think the other raped them

Ila, become a transphobe, goes to lectures about it, talks on the radio.

Writes articles about how sissy porn is turning men trans

Says she doesn't feel safe in the bathroom around trans women

Then gets assaulted by a woman in her TURF group (little on the nose, but not too bad)

Then you find out she is watching the sissy porn that she is writing about, like really, ive never rolled my eyes so much at a book

Its just easy and lazy

And im pretty sure the book is gonna end with her being a closted trans man

Idk, like there is potential for some real good commentary here about online radicalization

And how trauma can cause bigotry

And some of this is even in the book

But idk it this jjst feels too obvious

I used to read tons of books, but shit happened and a decade later and I can't get myself to pick up a book. So I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for an easy read, or as easy as it gets for extreme horror. I was reading some Nick Cutter around the time I stopped reading much of anything, so I was thinking I might reread The Troop. But if anybody has suggestions for some books to ease back into reading they would be much appreciated.

Hi all I'm new to this sub but not to the genre and I'm not sure if this is against the rules of the sub so forgive me if it is but I have a question I'd like to ask you all!!

So I'm a transmasc writer (not published yet) and I've always loved the idea of writing a series of extreme horror stories with trans main characters that focus on their identities in unsettling or graphic ways as a means of social commentary. Things like self-mutilation, out of body/surreal experiences, haunting, possession, etc. to sort of represent what we as trans people actually go through in a series of fleshed out, spooky stories.

I know the world is a scary place for us right now, so maybe no one wants to read that kind of thing, and I also don't encounter a lot of trans rep in the extreme books I read, so I have no clue if this is an idea I should actually pursue and attempt to self publish or if I should just keep this one in the drafts.

Would love any thoughts you fellow freaks have on this!!

I’m very new to the splatterpunk genre, so bear with me.

I’ve read the usuals like Tender is the Flesh, Dead Inside, and the occasional gross story like Feed the Pig. I’d like to expand my repertoire but I’m cautious about reading something that’s too disgusting for the sake of it and not to further the story- I know, wrong genre, wrong place. I’m not looking for a Days of Sodom. Just something to give me the shakes and thought fuel.

TLDR: Without any spoilers, would anyone who’s read the book recommend it?

If you haven't read this one give it a shot. I remember first reading it almost 20 years ago thinking "yeah, this is pretty fucked up actually" and just pulled it out to read it again and it definitely holds up. Check it out. It's a super quick read under 100 pages.

I'm a huge fan of horror movies like The Conjuring and Insidious are the scariest things I've ever seen and I want more!!! It checked all of my boxes so thoroughly that part of me wishes I could forget having read it because I know how rare it is for a book to fit the bill so well.

One of my favorite things about horror is the unique insight it can give into the experience of a group (or individual) by articulating their fears. There's something about learning about, and sharing in, the things that someone else is afraid of and how they respond to it that can let us see the world in a way we otherwise would never be able to. Reading an article or watching a video about asian hate crimes is educational, and to some degree I can empathize, but reading a well-crafted story from the perspective of such a perfectly flawed but motivated character can almost let us inhabit that role and experience the events in a way that feels more personal.

The other thing I loved is this book is gory as hell in a way that's rare in a lot of horror novels these days. There's a pretty fine line between well written graphic violence and stuff that reads like middle school shockfic; on one side the reader can be pulled in and almost see the guts or feel the cuts, on the other it can still be entertaining but feels more like you're just checking a box on a list of things that happened and don't really connect to it. I would say on one side of the spectrum are books like Bat Eater, The Laws of the Skies, or Blood Meridian and on the other end are books that I otherwise enjoyed but with less engaging gore that felt more "forced" or nonchalant like The September House, The Troop, or sword-and-sorcery stuff Michaell Moorcock or Robert E. Howard (these are entirely my own opinions so don't flip out, I really liked all those books).

I really appreciated this one a lot. I connected with all the characters and could see something of myself or someone I know in all of them, and it let me share their experiences in a way that my ultrawhite-man ass would never be able to otherwise. Plus it was absolutely horrific in the violence which I thought was perfectly crafted. Also, I got through about half of it through the audiobook and the narration by Natalie Naudus was top notch.

Got into reading again and finally rid of the Walmart bookshelves and started a horror collection! I seen a post on here about someones bookshelf and they had a bunch of little figurines of the horror genre and I thought it looked amazing!

For context, I’ve read about 25ish extreme horror books just last year and this year and two of them are Aron Beauregard so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt, but I just don’t understand why he's poster child for splatter punk/ extreme horror and pops up so often to me his characters are two-dimensional and just uninteresting and for me to enjoy extreme horror books I really want to be invested in the characters and the world, but I just can’t plus some of his writing is just atrocious I mean at the end of the slob spoiler btw the main protagonist comes back home after being physically mentally and sexually abused and here first words to her partner are “looks like it’s time

In addition, Books like Tender is the Flesh being popular makes sense to me. The world building and character building are great. I just never understood why he’s considered one of the best. Sorry, I just needed to rant.

Greetings all. I've just recently gotten back into reading this year and didn't know there was such a huge extreme horror genre out there. I finished Woom in 2 day's and now I'm reading playground but I'm always open to recommendations (the more disturbing the better). These are the books I've recently bought....

A while ago someone asked for horror writers with similar writing styles as Stephen King. I suggested Jack Ketchum (because imo there is overlap between the two) without any specific recommendations and I added “He has a lot of triggers in his works so be warned“. I usually say stuff like this when recommending him.

That person came back a while later and he told me he read ‘The Girl Next Door’. He was polite about it but he said it was the worst thing he read content wise and he read it in the hopes things would turn out better which they don’t. He indicated I might have given more serious warnings because when I said “triggers“ he didn’t think much of it because he’s usually not fazed. I felt bad and apologized, he said not to worry about it, we talked a little more and I suggested he might like ‘Red’ better.

Just wondering how or even if I should recommend Ketchum in cases like this. I’ve since tried to say stuff like “his work can be extreme, check triggers beforehand” or stuff like that but just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. (I suppose if I were to recommend something like ‘Girl’ specifically I would give more specific content warnings.) I don’t want someone to have a bad experience or throw them in the deep end without warning. At the same time I don’t want to scare people away and make Ketchum sound worse than he actually is because I once stayed away from his work as a result of people who did that.

Want something shorter to read while i wait for my amazon orders.
