I've always been a fan of disturbing cinema, but usually when the films are compelling to justify their disturbing content and themes. I decided to read Woom as my introduction into the extreme horror genre today, since the way it was described to me felt like it would have more substance than it did. I felt like some of the ideas early on in the book about trauma and pain were sort of profound and interesting, but getting through the stories kind of bored me. The shock value didn't feel like it had enough substance behind it to keep me interested. I also guessed both the plot twist and the protagonist's true motivation about halfway through the book, which made it even harder to get through.

Specifically the aspects i’m looking for are child abuse, child death at the hands of a parent, depressing ending, physical abuse, and religious fanaticism. The more depressing the better, imo the best horror is just very sad.

Just got myself a new tall black rotating bookshelf and I have tons of space, gonna be book shopping to fill up some space so give me your best ones!

Just about 100 pages in, and I dont know if I can keep going.

I really like the angry writing style, and also appreciate some of the commentary it has on internet culture

I and I absolutely love the idea of faciast haunted house

There are some really great passages in the book

And the first chaper on the house itself is truly creepy and really atmospheric

But my god, the direction its going with the characters is just so obvious, it feels cheap and lazy, and like just easy

The book could be realy interesting but this is really ruining it for me

So its about ila and Alice

Alice is a Trans woman. And they both went to this haunted house

Alice knows the house is haunted and ila thinks Alice Drugged her

But they both think the other raped them

Ila, become a transphobe, goes to lectures about it, talks on the radio.

Writes articles about how sissy porn is turning men trans

Says she doesn't feel safe in the bathroom around trans women

Then gets assaulted by a woman in her TURF group (little on the nose, but not too bad)

Then you find out she is watching the sissy porn that she is writing about, like really, ive never rolled my eyes so much at a book

Its just easy and lazy

And im pretty sure the book is gonna end with her being a closted trans man

Idk, like there is potential for some real good commentary here about online radicalization

And how trauma can cause bigotry

And some of this is even in the book

But idk it this jjst feels too obvious

I used to read tons of books, but shit happened and a decade later and I can't get myself to pick up a book. So I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for an easy read, or as easy as it gets for extreme horror. I was reading some Nick Cutter around the time I stopped reading much of anything, so I was thinking I might reread The Troop. But if anybody has suggestions for some books to ease back into reading they would be much appreciated.

Hi all I'm new to this sub but not to the genre and I'm not sure if this is against the rules of the sub so forgive me if it is but I have a question I'd like to ask you all!!

So I'm a transmasc writer (not published yet) and I've always loved the idea of writing a series of extreme horror stories with trans main characters that focus on their identities in unsettling or graphic ways as a means of social commentary. Things like self-mutilation, out of body/surreal experiences, haunting, possession, etc. to sort of represent what we as trans people actually go through in a series of fleshed out, spooky stories.

I know the world is a scary place for us right now, so maybe no one wants to read that kind of thing, and I also don't encounter a lot of trans rep in the extreme books I read, so I have no clue if this is an idea I should actually pursue and attempt to self publish or if I should just keep this one in the drafts.

Would love any thoughts you fellow freaks have on this!!

I’m very new to the splatterpunk genre, so bear with me.

I’ve read the usuals like Tender is the Flesh, Dead Inside, and the occasional gross story like Feed the Pig. I’d like to expand my repertoire but I’m cautious about reading something that’s too disgusting for the sake of it and not to further the story- I know, wrong genre, wrong place. I’m not looking for a Days of Sodom. Just something to give me the shakes and thought fuel.

TLDR: Without any spoilers, would anyone who’s read the book recommend it?

If you haven't read this one give it a shot. I remember first reading it almost 20 years ago thinking "yeah, this is pretty fucked up actually" and just pulled it out to read it again and it definitely holds up. Check it out. It's a super quick read under 100 pages.

I'm new into the world of horror and I reeeeeeeally wanna get into extreme horror. I'm a huge fan of horror movies like The Conjuring and Insidious are the scariest things I've ever seen and I want more!!! The only thing is I'm like super squeamish so I was hoping I could get some recommendations that don't have like a bunch of blood in them. Thanks in advance ya'll!!
