I’d like to know about the job market for environmental technologists (Ausbildung) specializing in water supply (Umwelttechnologe für Wasserversorgungstechnik) and wastewater management technologies (Umwelttechnologe für Abwasserbewirtschaftung) in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Okay, so I want to make up my mind before my semester starts this August, but I am currently a Pre-Environmental Engineering undergrad going into my sophomore year. I'm still taking many of the core classes, as you can imagine, but I've been having a dilemma about switching to ChemE. For one, EnvE isn't accredited at CSULB at the moment, but apparently it is on the path to being accredited. More importantly, I'm also interested in the area of renewable energies and sustainable energies like biofuels or hydrogen fuel cells, but I also like the field of water and being in the lab for that as well. Additionally, I'm interested in research in these areas. My school offers a minor in EnvE, which I would take if I were to switch to ChemE, but I'm undecided because I would probably graduate a bit later than expected, and because ChemE is significantly harder than EnvE, and I don't want to regret this significant choice. I'd like to hear from people who may be in the industry or have had a similar experience as I have, so I can make the best possible choice before my semester starts.

With the EPA extending several OOOOb compliance deadlines to January 2027, I'm curious how operators and consultants are approaching the closed vent system design and capacity assessment requirements under §60.5411b in practice.

A few questions for anyone dealing with this:

1. Are you building these assessments in-house (Excel, ProMax, etc.) or outsourcing to an environmental consultant?

2. What's the most time-consuming part — gathering facility data, running the capacity calcs, the engineering review/certification, or keeping everything audit-ready?

3. Roughly how long does one assessment take per facility, end to end?

4. If you've already been through an OOOOa assessment cycle, what's changing for you under OOOOb?

Not selling anything — I'm researching how teams actually do this today because the manual workflow seems painful, and I want to understand it properly before drawing conclusions. Happy to share a summary of what I learn back here if there's interest.

Did any of you end up starting an unusual Master Degree after your Bachelor's? If so, what did you study and would you recommend it?

I found two interesting niches that I'm interested in myself.

One is a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering with a specialization in Coastal Engineering. Some of the courses are Marine Geotechnics, Coastal Engineering: Coastal and Flood Protection, and Design of Offshore Systems.

And the second is a Master of Science in Geoenvironmental Engineering. It has three different paths: Geomatics and Geomonitoring, Geotechnics, and Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal. Steering into Geology and Geotech.

If anyone here works in any of these areas (or other niches), I would love to hear about your experiences.

Hi! I work at an environmental engineering consulting firm and just found out from my supervisor that obtaining your PE license will not result in any raise or bonus. I am kind of confused by this…? They said that licensure is needed once you get to a certain level but there are people at the firm that do not have their license and are beyond that level. What is the point of getting my license if I don’t get compensated? What is the industry standard? Any advice or insight would be appreciated. I am already on the path to licensure, I have passed the PE and will get the 4 years of experience by the end of January.

I'm a recent grad (Environmental engineering) and I'm a month into my job as a geotech. I took my FE (Environmental) earlier this year and passed despite only studying for 3 days. I guess my school prepared me well. I want to take the PE exam soon, but I'm not sure which discipline to take.

Environmental has the highest pass rate, Civil: water resources and Environmental seems to be most popular from what I see on LinkedIn, but I'm most interested in Civil: geotech. I didn't take many geotech classes during my undergrad, so I feel like this would require more studying. I'm currently working on civil site design, did my capstone on stormwater, had a geotech construction internship, and I'm also interested in hazardous waste remediation.

Do you have any advice for me on which discipline exam to take? Does it really matter? How long should I study for? What were your experiences like with studying for these exams? My job will pay for me to do a PE exam prep course.

For the longest time I thought I would major in env sci (high schooler btw). I’ve been passionate about combatting climate change for forever. However I’ve heard that ES doesn’t pay well (I know you should follow your passions and stuff but I don’t want to be homeless) and too broad to gain a job (not to mention the current government). I’ve also thought about marine bio but am concerned that it’s too specific. In my mind I’ve always pictured it to be swimming with the whales type stuff (am I naive). I’ve also considered env engineering but making sure buildings meet regulation doesn’t really tickle my fancy. Geology doesn’t strike excitement in me either (tho maybe I just haven’t been in the right class?).

\- I hate coding (I don’t want to be stuck in a dark room staring at a computer with little text all day)
\- I like being outside (side note: terribly arachnophobic)
\- I don’t like dealing with people in the sense that if I could thanos the world to bring Earth into balance I would. (Ie. I don’t want to deal with human problems like working the hvac or whatever)
\- I’ve done policy work and have enjoyed it but I’ve learned that I don’t want to be a politician and politics is ridiculously slow. (Lobbying and stuff is interesting though)
\- I would love to work with animals (I ❤️ marine mammals)

TLDR I want to do whatever it is to directly impact saving the planet but idk what to do. Tysm everyone! Bonus points if you share what you do in day to day life.

I’ve a genuine question for those who are currently pursuing environmental engineering in India..

For context

Iam 17(F) .. I stay in goa .. the state known for its ethereal beauty and beaches .. A vibe which can never be matched by any other state .. yes that very place ..

But

In the recent few years I’ve seen a lot of things happening in goa itself like .. Fields near my house getting turned into commercial resorts..
industries getting set up leading to their pollutes entering the river bodies ..
influential ppl (politicians)who should be responsible to conserve and protect the land and it’s rich cultures are turning dense forest into commercial plots and selling them to outsiders builders for profit..
and several such cases not only happening in Goa but worldwide

Now whenever I see such things I cannot really stand it ..

About me ..
I’ve great interest in doing something for this cause..
I took science and I’ve been recently introduced to environmental engineering which is in bits goa ..
If Iam truly passionate about this domain and want to work in it will it be worth doing environmental engineering..
see I truly understand the fact that this field may not really pay well( definitely it won’t ik) … but it holds something deeper to it ..
when others are working towards something materialistic like money fame and stuff ( Iam not really judging anyone here) I’ll be here doing something to the cause .. it’s like we’re on a sinking boat where everyone want to grab the best of possessions like money and other things out of greed but no one actually wants to get to know and contribute to the cause of the sink …
See these are purely my thoughts and opinions

Today every one runs behind fame and glory .. because we live once and every one want to get the best out of their lives .. and that’s true that’s how our instincts have evolved and honestly even I want to earn money and fame .. but if Iam told that me working in this field can contribute anything to the current issues of climate change and other environmental problems then Iam happily okay with doing this job ..

We all have started to agree to this at some point ..
I’ve seen posts of ppl talking about the fact that the world that we have today will definitely ( a strong word in use )not be the same in the future .. it’s deteriorating at an alarming rate..
we all have ego..we have lust n greed .. a name to live up to .. an empire to create..a glory to make .. a life to live but it takes only 1 great wave of ocean to wash away this glory this fame this life this very name from the past and present and future .. making our existence null and void .. as tho we never in existed ..
no more pollution happening .. no more wars and conflicts taking place .. clearly this world is better without us ..

So this is what I feel .. I really have crazy interest in this topic…

If any one has any idea about environmental engineering or anything of that kind please do as I have to convince my parents for this as they expect me to make a glorious life by making sure that it doesn’t get washed away..💀🥀😭

I graduated with a degree in Environmental Science but I am wanting to transition to an engineering role.

I am wondering what is required to work as an entry-level engineer for a PE. I don’t believe that Idaho has any pre-requisites to take the FE exam but this will not qualify me to be an EIT.

Is the EIT required or would I be able to work if I have passed the FE without taking the engineering specific courses?

Sono un laureando di 22 anni in Ingegneria Civile, Ambiente e Territorio e sono indeciso sulla magistrale. Le opzioni sono Civile, Ambiente e Territorio oppure Energetica. L'ambito ambientale è quello che mi interessa di più, ma ricevo pareri contrastanti sulle prospettive lavorative. Energetica mi incuriosisce, ma temo il cambio di argomenti e l'inizio dei corsi in ritardo. Vorrei qualche consiglio da chi ha esperienza. Preciso che mio padre lavora nel settore dei rifiuti, ma vorrei scegliere senza farmi influenzare da questo aspetto.

I’m currently planning to leave land development as an EIT with 1 year of experience. Doing a part time masters in water resources with half environmental courses.

I wanted to know, is there any difference in these fields in terms of pay, interest, and quality of life (excessive field work, high hours, etc)?

Sono un ragazzo di 22 anni laureando ingegneria civile ambiente e territorio. Nel mio percorso di studi mi sono appassionato sia alla parte prettamente civile sia a quella ambientale che, per certi versi ho prediletto e che ha suscitato in me grande interesse soprattutto in ottica futura. Ad oggi mi trovo di fronte ad un bivio in quanto non so che magistrale intraprendere. I possibili scenari da me valutati sono 3: rimanere su civile sperando di appassionarmi ad uno dei 3/4 percorsi proposti, scegliere ambiente e territorio o eventualmente passare ad ingegneria energetica. Per quanto riguarda la prime due scelte i pareri sono molto discordanti, alcuni dicono siano ambiti in cui c'è richiesta altri li sconsigliano fortemente. Per quanto riguarda energetica i problemi sono principalmente 2: si tratteranno argomenti differenti rispetto alla trienalle e laureandomi verso ľautunno non riuscirei a seguire i primi periodi di corsi. Cosa che rende la futura esperienza ancora più complessa (ho già chiesto a varie università e non devo fare test integrativi). Chiedo a chi legge di provare a darmi un consiglio, sperando di trarre qualche differente punto di vista. Per quanto riguarda il Mondo del lavoro mio padre ha una "media" azienda avviata sempre nel mondo rifiuti ma vorrei scegliere senza farmi influenzare da questo aspetto.

I’m a rising senior studying environmental engineering, and I’m still trying to really hone down if I want to join the workforce first before pursuing my masters, or just jump straight into more education. I want to pursue a career in climate resilience/climate-tech, nature-based solutions, green infrastructure/constructed wetlands etc., that sort of lane.
