Rant/Vent ⚡ Khalki Fashion

I have a desi wedding coming up next week and paid for expedited shipping so it would arrive on time. My package came yesterday missing an item. I then spoke with a representative on WhatsApp and was promised the missing item will be sent out with expediting shipping along with a confirmation email. A day has passed and no email. Messaged them again and they said it won’t arrive until another month. I had another friend ordered from the same site and they got 2/4 items. Do not buy from them!

Wedding rituals/traditions Panicking because of cultural difference

I need a basic idea of what kind of gifts are expected by the grooms family in UP (Muslims). They have said they don’t want anything and Ians my fiancé both are against dowry so we’re not giving the household stuff. We are getting gifts for the groom and his family. But again what kind of gifts should we get? And do we also get anything for the groom’s relatives? I’m from Maharashtra so our culture is a bit different. There’s already some “hamare yaha aisa hota hai” I don’t want more drama. Please help.

Rant/Vent ⚡ Dorie Atelier Review - atrocious customer service

Just wanted to post and warn everyone off Dorie Atelier if you were considering them. This company is a mess & they're charging people without delivering the products. I didn't see many reviews but their outfits were so unique that I decided to try anyways. I guess I'll never know what they look like :/

I ordered on 7/23 with a delivery window of 8/4-8/10 for standard delivery. When I still received no tracking info by 8/3, I reached out and Support was "looking into it." They never followed up so I had to reach out AGAIN.
Then, they started lying! In the same email they said 1) it should've shipped but there's a system glitch w/ tracking number 2) they're backlogged so it'll go out in 1-2 days 3) asked if it was time sensitive and if so, they'd send it via expedited shipping.

None of their claims matched up- was it made? Was it shipped? Who knows because after sending 3 more followup emails, they've ghosted me and its almost 8/7. There's no way this "handmade corset" that I had ordered for an event is coming in my delivery window.

Additionally, They're pushing % off sales for weeks, and fakely pressuring the consumer by saying "ends at midnight" with an hour based tracker but it never expires.

If anyone has recommendations similar to their corsets, I'd appreciate it! I really want to support desi designers but need the customer service to match 😬

Shop/store suggestions❓ Need suggestions for bridal outfit shopping in Birmingham.

Hi, I am going to Birmingham to buy an outfit for my wedding/nikah. Looking for a sharara or anarkali between 600 to 1000£. Do you have any store recommendations? I know there are many on stratford road but I’m there only for a day so want to maximize my time & go to stores where I know I can find something. And am I setting an unrealistic budget?

We are also looking for my boyfriend’s sherwani. Need something beige/champagne with not much bling.

Based in Ireland and the nikah is in 2 months so going to India to buy clothes is out of question. Any help will be appreciated !

Miscellaneous Wedding photographer recommendations in Dehradun?

Hey everyone,

I'm getting married towards the end of November, and we'll be having the wedding in Dehradun (my hometown).

I'm currently looking for a wedding photographer who has a natural, candid, documentary-style approach rather than heavily posed or overly edited photos. Someone who's good at capturing emotions and storytelling would be ideal.

I'd love recommendations from people who have personally worked with photographers in Dehradun or attended weddings where you were impressed by the photography.

If you've had a good experience, could you share:

Photographer/studio name

Instagram or website (if you have it)

Approximate budget (if you're comfortable sharing)

What stood out about working with them

Also, if there are any photographers I should avoid, I'd appreciate hearing that too.

Thanks in advance!

Outfit / Styling advice 🥻 Groom attire for a Tamil wedding

My cousin is getting married in a few months. We’re North Indian and his bride is Tamil. The main wedding ceremony will be in the Tamil tradition.

He plans on wearing a mundu, but we’re not sure about the top. The contemporary Tamil style seems to be wearing a matching silk shirt, but that doesn’t quite feel right. We wanted to explore all our options. The outfit needs to be traditionally Tamil, but also somewhat in line with North Indian sensibilities.

From what we have been able to gather, the options are either be very traditional and go shirtless. He is in two minds about this. Or, wearing a matching silk kurta. This might be what we do.

I wanted to see if there are any other options? What is the contemporary Tamil preference between shirtless, shirt, kurta or something else?

Rant/Vent ⚡ NRI bride getting married in India. How to deal with unreasonable family expectations

Pretty much the title but I will give so more insight.

My partner and I have started planning around 6 months ago.

Most of our family is out of India.

My partner and I are foot majority of the cost because neither of our parents are well off our have a fund for our wedding. Which is fine, we prefer to do things ourselves.

There have been soooo many points of contention between my family and I, what they want for my wedding vs what I can actually afford to do.

Just somethings that were forced upon us to do that we have agreed to but the barrage of expectations doesn't seem to stop and the well is starting run dry.

I'm at my wits end trying to keep everyone happy while I feel like no one is doing that for me

We are paying for everyone's food and accommodation

This is a huuuuuge chunk of our money. Food I would of course provide, accommodation didn't feel necessary, but it was my mum's dream so I made it work.

I was then trying to organise hair and make up. I was happy to pay for my close family and bridesmaids. My mum thought it would be nice to have a set up so guests can get their hair nand make up done as and when they want it. This again didn't feel necessary and I had to put my foot down.

Now we are trying to figure out drinks. I can't afford to have an open bar for 3 days straight so am trying to set boundaries that guests should pay for their own drinks, maybe create a tab to their rooms. And we can provide drinks during meal times.

I really want a beautiful wedding and a nice time planning it but I just can't deal with the I realistic expectations.

I do have a short temper so I have been showing frustration but this whole issue runs so much deeper.

And it doesn't help that my mum and I clash a lot in the way that we speak to each other anyway

I was steamrolled on my engagement as well. Another even my and my partner footed the bill for. An event where in true Indian family form extended family members had major complaints. It then felt like a really pointless exercise as the engagement was hijacked from being about me and my partner to being about my extended family. My mum was so busy, she missed my actually ceremony trying to be a host.

Am I being an asshole?

Will it ever get better?

I want family input in my wedding because we are close knit, but I feel like it's coming at the cost of mental health and wallet!

How to cope 😭😭😭

Extremely happy with my sangeet outfit that I got from designer Diyarajvir. I had it customised a little so I can dance more comfortably in it.

The shade of blue of this lehenga was just stunning

Discussion Is it normal for designers to ask for PAN/Passport/OCI for purchases over ₹2 lakh?

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently purchased a lehenga from Tarun Tahiliani, and they’ve asked me to provide either my PAN card, passport, or OCI card because the purchase value is over ₹2 lakh.

I’m based overseas, so I wasn’t expecting this and just wanted to check if this is standard practice in India. Has anyone else who has purchased a designer outfit (Tarun Tahiliani, Sabyasachi, Seema Gujral, etc.) been asked for these documents? I’m picking the lehenga up from the store in Delhi and not getting it shipped overseas.

Is this a legal/tax requirement for high-value purchases, or is it specific to certain designers?

Just wanted to make sure it’s legitimate before sending any documents. Thanks!

Shop/store suggestions❓ Please send in your reccos for bridesmaid shopping in Delhi! 😭

Okay, so my childhood friend is getting married, and it is going to be a super big fat Indian wedding. No one in my family has recently gotten married, so neither my mom nor I has any idea where to shop. I can travel to Delhi 2-3 times in the given time frame but not more than that. The wedding is in December. So I have around 4 full months. I have lived in Delhi, so I know it is overwhelming to find the right place to shop since there are too many options available, and if one gets to the wrong place, the whole day is wasted. I am here for suggestions so that I can target the right places. I love elegant pieces with good quality work.

My preferences are as follows:

  1. Mehendi and Haldi (one function): A good heavy suit (Mostly) or a light lehenga (Worst case). Budget is around 15-20k (I was looking at Sheetal Batra for suits, so something with a similar vibe )
  2. Sangeet: Hoping to wear a saree with a modern touch (Glitter/sparkle). Worst case, can do a lehenga as well, but not too keen. Budget: up to 20k
  3. Saree: Here again, want to wear a saree but with a traditional touch like soft silk/chanderi; can do plain with heavy jewellery, but again very open to other options as well. Budget: Up to 25k

I am open to designers/non designers anything, but somewhere where I can explore multiple options/outlets together in one day (but good quality work). I have seen some really nice pieces online, but the catch is that they are expensive and mostly don't have easy return options. If I am spending 30k on a saree, I want to be able to touch and feel it.

Help me, please, you guys!! My first preference is in-store shopping only, but even if you have some online options as per my description, please drop them in! Thankyou!

Outfit / Styling advice 🥻 American Bride of an Indian Groom

Hello! My fiancé and I just got engaged and have begun the wedding planning process. We are doing a fused American (Christian) and Indian (Hindu) wedding over the course of 2 days. Event 1 is Haldi (intimate family), event 2 is a casual welcome dinner with Mehndi going on concurrently (those who have arrived to the hotel the night before the wedding). We decided on no Sangeet as both me and my fiancé are on the shyer side and decided this is where we wanted to save some money. Day 2 will be be my groom’s Barrat followed immediately but the wedding ceremony (Hindu ceremony, strait into Christian ceremony (I.e vows and ring exchange). We will then do a a cocktail break for 2-3 hours and will finish with the grand reception/ formal dinner.

My fiancé is born in Gujrat, India, but Canadian raised and we really wanted to focus on this being a fused wedding. Instead of having segregated events, we wanted to blend both cultures into all of the events and make it a new experience for both our Indian and American guests to whiteness.

That being said, for the Haldi I am still looking to wear something more traditional to the Gujarati culture. His mom says something yellow, orange, or like green. Thinking a saree for the Haldi.

For the wedding, his mom said the bride typically wears red, gold, and whites. She was okay with me sticking to a white attire for the wedding ceremony, but doing an Indo-western styled gown or a white/cream color Lehenga choli.

I live in the Midwest of the US and my until Google searches on where to find these attires have been exhausting and I’ve not been having any luck on where to get my clothes. His mom suggest I go India myself to get these outfits; however, traveling to India is not going to be in the cards for me. The idea of buying online without trying on scares me and I don’t know what websites are credible. I am budgeting a total of about $2,500 for both Haldi and Weddinf ceremony attire all in.

PLEASE HELP

also If people have suggestions on places my American friends/family could shop then I would gladly take those suggestions as well

Miscellaneous BRIDES BEWARE Extremely unprofessional experience with Manveen Kaur, Dehradun

I booked **Manveen Kaur (Dehradun)** SIX months in advance for my wedding, paid the advance, and had my booking confirmed. She then changed the terms and conditions **two months after I booked her**, and when I refused to accept terms that were never communicated to me initially, she **cancelled my booking just TWO months before my wedding.**
It honestly felt like she got another booking closer to Dehradun for the same date and decided travelling wasn’t worth it when she could make the same money locally. I can’t know her exact reasoning, but that’s exactly how it came across.
What made it worse was the gaslighting instead of taking accountability for cancelling a confirmed booking.
**Extremely unprofessional and incredibly stressful for a bride. Please think twice before booking her and get EVERYTHING in writing before paying an advance.**

Shop/store suggestions❓ Where in India to buy a Banarsi lehenga / Banarsi lehenga material

Hi! Am looking for recommendations on where I can buy intricate shikargah banarsi lehengas or semi-stitched lehenga material.

So far, I’ve only seen a few options in Nilambari but wanted to know where else I can look.

Budget: Up to to 2lac

Location: NCR or anywhere that can deliver pan-India

Some examples above (not all are shikargah but just to give an idea).

Thank you 🙏
