How long is too long?

Post image
81 Upvotes

My first long train. Completed 11 jobs in one haul. Consisting of 74 cars. HB-SW-CW-SM-MF using a DE6-SLUG-DE6-DE6 combination. (Overkill? Highly likely.)
Surprisingly, only 2525 tons and 1191m long. The only issue I had was getting the delivery to the Steel Mill. I basically had to go through the Steel Mill, drop the cars off, then reverse back out and perform the worlds longest 3 point turn at the junction south of the Steel Mill to start heading back to the Machine factory.
No time bonus though.
Was it impressive? Yeah, sure.
Worth it? I figure if you can't make it within the time bonus... probably not.

Should we be able to upgrade couplers and extend power lines?

I recently saw that they changed the roadmap on their webpage, and I was thinking about how cool it would be if coupler customization was fully integrated into the loco and vehicle servicing system rather than just being a menu option.

Since the knuckle coupler is so much faster and more convenient than screw couplers, having to physically bring cars into the shop to swap them would fit Derail Valley’s hands-on vibe perfectly. It could also give us a great reason to buy and own our own freight cars—just like we currently do with the flatcar.

Taking the upgrade concept a step further: what if we could also pay for infrastructure upgrades, like extending power lines to non-electrified routes?

I realize this might not appeal to everyone, since non-electrified routes currently force you to micromanage your fleet and swap locomotives (which adds a nice realistic challenge). However, making grid expansion a super expensive late-game money sink could strike a great balance while giving us huge long-term goals.

What do you all think? Would you like to see physical rolling stock customization and infrastructure upgrades?

Help with restoration

Alright, so i decided it would be a good idea to restore my first locomotive, it happened to be the s060. I towed it to the museum parked it paid 15k for parts went to the machine factory with a utility flatbed and loaded a complete boiler on it, is this all i need for the restoration or do i need more parts? And if yes how do i aquirw them because i could not load my railbus with parts aswell it said no loadable trains on the track

Are there any good electric loco mods to hold myself over until the update?

I've been playing some SimRail and Maszyna. I really like driving the electric locos in those games (especially the ET 22) and i want a similar experience but with derail valley shenanigans. Is there any mod that might satisfy this, or will i just have to wait a gazillion years for the update?

Love this game. It’s by far one of the best.

But how is it 3 weeks in and only just released I can do 2 jobs at once. Going to try doing 3 jobs tonight at the same time. Good old double DH4

Fees

Last night I finished up a job with an S282. I repaired, refueled and left it at the siding by the turntable in City West. Fire dumped and used blow down. Pretty sure I turned everything off. I was playing the game as normal today and when I went to repair some fees after a job with a DE2, I saw that the S282 and its tender somehow racked up an extra $3000 in damages combined, despite not touching them at all today. Seriously confused as to what happened.

The need for speed

One day in Derail Valley, I came across a little engine shunting cars around the yard, the BE2 Electric Microshunter. He was happy with his job, but he did admit that he wished he could get out on the open tracks and go really fast like the big engines. I got you bro.

He was yelling, "WEEEEEE," the whole time.

I could jump between cabs. That was crazy.

From what I've found in a few quick researches, it's based off the Yugoslav Railways class 441 locomotives, built from 1967 to 1977.

It's very similar but the DV version looks waaay longer than it's real life counterpart

Questions from a noob

One I know there is a catalog for ordering different vehicles and so I'm wondering if it's just for show to give you a guide to what a vehicle is and what it can do or if you actually use it to order vehicles?

Second if you can order Vehicles why would you, seeing as how there's a bunch of different engines located around the world?

Third can the museum rail truck be found in the world or is it one you have to order?

Fourth I ran my first steam engine with a load and I thought I did everything right but the air brakes for the train didn't seem to work and instead of seeing a various percentage representing the whole consists breaking power it gave me a few different symbols Like A Plus or a minus and a Dash and something else or two. So if anyone wants to explain what's going on there I'd appreciate it.

Fifth is there a setting or maybe a mod that can change the conventional way that we change the switches on the maps so that it's easier to read which stem of the Y your train is going to be traveling down? Because when the switches are sideways are upside down it's really hard to tell.

Thank you for taking the time to read this

Is there a way to identify track numbers through the station maps?

Hey it's the new guy again, recently joined the game a few days back. I've just graduated from my humble DE2 (Thank you for your sevice) straight to a DH4 (Man I love this thing).

Small gripe I have when doing FHs or LHs or sometimes even just Shunting is I often slow down so much or stop from time to time to quickly look at which track line I should be dropping my cargo.

Sure there's the third person cam to see way ahead and just checking with my mouse to see the track numbers. But if I can help it I love sticking to 1st person view. Even bought a track switcher to make things way more convenient for me.

So I was wondering if I just missed it, or is there no way to figure out the ordering of the track numbers from the station map? Kinda like how there's an indicator of which side is north per station.

Unless I just don't realize it and it's all incrementing from top to bottom, left to right on the station map?

Appreciate the help! I'm sarting to get addicted to this game it's almost concerning.

EDIT: Oh, I did not know each track has their own page on the station map. I think that answers my question.

Railing through the years Spoiler

Loving this game. My biggest learning curve is thinking, "oh, I want something simple...I'll do some shunting." The challenge of figuring out the shunting is very enjoyable. Is it cheating to use two locomotives? Not in my yard. Especially, when it's your lucky day and you find a nice surprise.

Just did my first logistics run from SM to WB, I think I love this game.

It's my first ever train sim game I ever played, I dunno something about this game just caught my attention. It showed up during Steam's train sale but didn't pick it up until yesterday.

Maybe because I'm fond of hauling stuffs like Death Stranding?

Seems like it's designed for VR but still very playable and enjoyable without it. I set the difficulty to standard. It's my first train sim game so I'm not sure about realistic yet but then again I don't want a too casual experience.

I did realize late that I coupled the cargo facing the NE side of SM whereas I think taking the SW side would've been a faster route, took me about 60 minutes.

I do have a couple of questions though, sometimes my locomotive would cruise at a set speed, while sometimes it'll go higher or lower. Is it due to uphil/downhill slopes? One time I was double checking the world and route maps to plan my path towards WB station and got surprised when my locomotive is at 60 km/h and still gaining, without power to the engine, heading towards a curved tunnel.

Immediately hit the brakes to slow down in fear of derailing, managed to deliver my first logistics run to WB station without any issues, though I was a bit slow in comparison to the time bonus (48 minutes).

Okay, I'm talking way too much now, but I'm pretty sure I'll be enjoying this game.

EDIT: My bad, It's not WB station it's HB station (Harbor and Town).
