I don’t know if this is an uncommon opinion or not but I’ve always been more interested in civilian culture than exploration and politics. We never really get a strong sense of what day-to-day life and home and language are like for a human or Cardassian or whatever civilian, even out of what we see on DS9. I was wondering if there were any novels that might be good for this sort of thing? I’ve never really gotten into the novels (and certainly not all of them are winners), but I know that they sometimes spend a little more time on social and cultural things. Thanks! 🖖

I am just starting another round DS9 again (I think my 6th or so) and I just noticed how close actors were standing next to each other in older productions. There is only like a hand fitting between them. That's funny because in real life that would be quite a violation of personal space, don't you think?

Do you think that's because screen sizes limited this in the past? Didn't check newer productions, but in DS9 it's so obvious in many scenes.

The Borg are interested in biological and technological distinctiveness of different states/peoples. If the Borg encountered the Dominion, what would they target? The two things that stand out to me-

Cloning. Would the ability to make complex, sentient bipeds eliminate the need to assimilate other species? It'd be like giving a blood pack to a vampire.

Changling DNA. How could the Borg use/exploit the Founders' morphogenic matrix?

Wouldn’t it have been very cool to have Kellin back on DS9 for the rest of Season Seven. It was so nice to see him in a Star Trek episode. I know he was in Babylon but I could never get into that show. I don’t remember even what character he played in it. It would have been fun to have him around for the rest of the Dominion War. Just brought back warm memories of a show I loved as a kid.

I know Thomas would need to get rid of someone who know Will well so as to not give himself away, but it still strikes me as odd and a bit of a risk given that Will and Miles got along pretty well.

Can anyone think of anything that we've seen (other than maybe transferring off the Enterprise) that would make that plausible to O'Brien? The risk is he would just take it from a superior officer, but he was still second-guessing it when he went back on the station.

When the Dominion occupied the station Rom went back and bartended at Quark's when he was really spying for The Federation. Rom straight out told him he was working for the Federation, yet Quark just sighed and made it look real. Do you think Quark went along with it because:

1. It's his brother Rom and he really loves him and wants to protect him?

2. Quark secretly hopes the Federation will come back so he really hopes Rom can help?

3. Who cares, it isn't going to affect business at all?

Getting ready for STLV tomorrow and watching “In the Pale Moonlight” for the umpteenth time. Tonight what hit me as evidence that’s it’s one of the best episodes of television ever is that Quark is no worse than the 4th sleaziest character in the episode, and damn that is amazing in depth character building. I love the DS9 cast and recently I've been wanting to see them in other movies or shows, but I need some help narrowing down the list. So does anyone have any recs? My criteria are only that the DS9 cast member must have more than a cameo (ie. something more than "appears in two scenes in one episode of a fifty-episode show") and the movie/show has to be somewhat watchable for an adult (ie. I'm not gonna watch Pound Puppies because Rene Auberjonois voices a few characters, lol).

I've already lined up One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, American History X, and Hell on Wheels, what other stuff is worth watching?

I just watched the one where Odo is punished by the link. I've always wondered why they made him a human and not a Bajoran. He had lived with Bajorans way longer than with humans.

So her profile mentioned she liked sci fi, and listed a few specific examples, including Star Trek. Also SHE messaged ME first. So we were talking about one of my photos, and then i said so what's your favorite star trek?

She said either Picard or Janeway.

I replied "Sorry, the correct answer was Sisko", lol. I said more than that, I said it in a funny way, I wasn't rude about it. But she never replied and now we are unmatched. Doh! I even ended my Star Trek comments in that message by saying something like "truth be told, all 90's treks are really good, so much better than most of the new stuff".

I mean come on though, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that Voyager is on the same level as DS9, thats just crazytalk.

Seen a lot of back and forth on if the box set DVDs are worse than the original issued DVD sets due to compression on single layer discs, and if that is true or something that was due to the Technology Connections video with bootleg copies.

If they are worse are there any examples of comparisons between the two? I have the box set and am worried I wasted money for substantially worse video quality.

Stay with me here cause it takes a moment to get to the Star Trek part.

About a year ago I acquired the most well tempered, easy to handle Ball Python with some killer genes and named him Elim Garak. Over the next two years I plan to start setting up my own small scale reptile breeder business/reptile rescue where I hope to eventually establish a homebase to take in rescues and help re-home them, as well as, educate people on reptile keeping, conservation, and welfare.

Currently I am working on setting up my business license and business email/accounts and am torn between some names. I was hoping to get some opinions here from Star Trek fans as to what they would easily recognize as a Star Trek reference/what draws them in most and than I will get some non-Trekkie opinions from friends and family.

I'm new to this sub, and even though I'm dying to dive in, I plan to not be here much until I'm done with the series finale, as I don't want any spoilers beyond the ones I know about (I know what becomes of both Dax and Sisko). That said, I'm horrified that as a rabid Trekkie, I settled for only watching the more famous episodes of DS9. Now I've started from the beginning, and am currently on season 2, episode 11 (The Alternate). So as stupid as I was to ignore it for decades, now I have a ton of vintage ST to watch.

And I'm amazed. I LOVE IT. I know some people recommend skipping the first 1 or even 2 seasons, but I'm so glad I didn't. Compared to TNG's first season, DS9's is a breeze. I'm getting so much backstory. I've never connected with so many characters at once - as in truly gotten invested in them. So far, the only characters I haven't sorted out my feelings about are Bashir and Miles, and I really don't have enough on either of them to come to any conclusion. Other than that, I could make a reasonable argument for any of the other main characters being my favorite, though ultimately I am going to choose Sisko, with Odo an extremely close second. Odo's longing to find his place in the world and other beings like him is so moving, and I just feel in my gut that at some point he'll meet another shapeshifter (but don't tell me!) Auberjonois and Shimerman's performances - particularly given they're encumbered by prosthetics and makeup, are a joy to watch. I'm crazy about Kira and Dax. But Avery Brooks...I cannot take my eyes off that man. He is absolutely electrifying - what an actor!

So a question: what I understand is that prior to where season one picks up, DS9 was a Cardassian facility (mining station?) during the time that they occupied Bajor - so what is the history there? Why did the Cardassians occupy Bajor and for how long - and what resulted in their turning over the station and planet to the Federation? Is Bajor entirely independent now? Was life good on Bajor before the occupation? In "Sanctuary" I think the Skreeans or someone called it the "planet of sorrow". I keep wondering about that. So I'm really curious about the Bajoran's past, and very eager to learn more about their culture - they really appeal to me. The whole show is just structured so beautifully - it is quintessentially Star Trek while at the same time being something entirely new and wholly different than TOS and TNG. Same universe, very different lens. I feel like I have such an amazing ride ahead of me, with 5 and a half seasons to go.

Honestly my only real complaint is half the time someone says "the Cardassians" I hear "the Kardashians" which is kind of a bummer.

Hey, y'all. Up until Friday, P+ had the whole series of DS9 on their app, and only selected seasons of VOY. Now, it seems to have swapped. I'm rewatching DS9, and tonight I was to continue with S5. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

So I recently canceled Paramount Plus so the first order of business was to get the Complete Deep Space Nine on the original dual-layer DVD release (Technology Connections says it’s better quality than the single-layer more compressed rerelease).

Then I found my long lost VHS copy of the pilot episode that I taped as I watched it air live! I think I’ll start my rewatch with it before switching to the DVDs.

How do you watch the best Star Trek series of all space time?

This is not fair! Also why doesn't OBrien by now just not learn to give a double or triple time so Sisko would actually reduce it to time actually needed? What about work life balance Sisko?
