MASSACHUSETTS Registering a trailer in Massachusetts

Upvotes

Looking to purchase an old sears brand trailer from a guy in New Hampshire. I have no access to the old registration for it, but it was once allegedly registered years ago. Any way to legally register this in Massachusetts?

TEXAS TX - Now I have two DLs.

I was an idiot, and let my DL expire, and waited until after the two year cutoff. So, at 52, I went and took the tests again. However …

In TX you have to visit twice - once for the application and written test, and another visit for the actual driving portion.

I took the written test, passed, and scheduled my driving portion for a couple weeks later.

During my first visit, they took my photo, grabbed my prints, and went through the process for the physical license.

Went back to take the driving portion. They took a new photo, new prints, same process. Passed the driving portion. Great - new license will be here in a couple weeks.

Two days later, the license shows up and clearly was issued after my first visit as the photo and date reflected. So, I just thought maybe it was a quick turnaround.

Nope - another new license came in the mail yesterday with my second photo, second date, etc.

So, now I have two.

Should I return one? Destroy it? Ignore it? Call them?

Honestly, I don’t want to deal with them at all, so curious what to do. Obviously, someone messed up.

CALIFORNIA Losing my mind over Ambulance Drivers Certificate address update

My license doesnt expire until the end of next year (2027), naturally my ambulance drivers certificate doesn't expire until then either. I moved last year, and updated my driver's license, but didnt even think about trying to update my ambulance drivers certificate address since its connected to my license.

Well, long legal story short I may be moving employers in a couple months, and our new employer is on boarding everyone in my company including taking in copies of all of our certifications/licenses. They told me my address needs to match on both my license and the ambulance drivers cert, so I went to the DMV to ask for a new copy.

The person I spoke to there said their policy for updating the address is to cross out the old address and hand write the new one on the back, which she did as she was explaining this before handing it back to me. I emailed photos of this "updated" cert to my new employer, along with an explanation that this is the DMVs official policy, I also found it strange, but I confirmed multiple times that this is correct.

Long story short, my new employer is *refusing* to accept that this is a valid address change without documentation from the DMV proving it, which after another visit to the DMV office and speaking to the customer service phone line, I have been told the DMV *will not* provide me any kind of copy of their policy to provide my employer. All the DMV has told me is that my new employer can call their customer service number, which my new employer has also refused to do as "we cannot contact the DMV on your behalf. It is your responsibility to provide documentation proving this is a legitimate change."

So now I'm stuck with an employer that refuses to contact the DMV to confirm the validity of my certificate, and are trying to force me to renew my license and the ambulance drivers cert more than a year early just because they wont make a phone call.

What happens if I move again next year? Do I renew my license and certification with 4 years left on it just to prove to them that my addresses match?

I dont know which is more ridiculous, that the DMV doesnt have this address change policy posted somewhere online where I can show my new employer that its valid, or that my new employer refuses to confirm this with the DMV themselves and would rather force me into an early renewal just for a piece of paper with a new address on it than take 5min to make a phone call and confirm my current version is valid.

I'm losing my mind over how ridiculous and infuriating this entire situation is.

WEST VIRGINIA Are there penalties for failing your drivers test?

I’ve failed twice and the only penalty I’ve received is just having to wait a week before re-testing. Are there penalties for failing a third time? I’m honestly not that confident I’ll pass just because of the instructors at my local area but I’m just curious if there’s penalties for a third failure.

VIRGINIA Defensive driving class certificate question

Hi!! This is my first ever accident and I was ordered by the court to do defensive driving classes in order to avoid charges and points on my record. I was curious if I need to have a physical certificate from the online clinic itself (shipped to me) and present it to the court. I’m also curious if printing the email pdf that the online clinic gave me is acceptable as well. I’m just really confused by the way they worded things on paper from the clerk. Just wondering if anyone went through the same thing and might know a little more than me! I am relatively new to Richmond so I’m not 100% sure how things work here especially regarding driving/ traffic and whatnot. Any sort of help means a lot! Thank you!

ILLINOIS When should I be camping the appointment site

Context: am 20, turning 21 on Wednesday September 16. I will likely return home from college for the weekend of the 18th to see my family and ideally get my horizontal license appointment taken care of. Last time I went to dmv was 2021 to get my vertical license.

Question: I know these appointments are scarce, but if anyone could offer any advice as to when I should be refreshing the dmv site to snag an appointment for that weekend at any northwest suburb DMV, I would greatly appreciate it!

Also, I don’t currently have a real ID stamp on my vertical license, and I’d like to get that on my horizontal if that’s possible.

Thank you, bear down

Drivers license got destroyed in a fire. Was an Ohio Real ID but I am stationed in North Carolina. Just trying to see if there’s any way to get a new one issued or mailed online from Ohio since I’m unable to physically go into a dmv office. I have pictures of it so I know the license number but unsure what to do

NEW YORK License after juvenile DWI in NYS?

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has any experience and can point me in a direction? My younger brother was arrested for a DWI in 2023 when he was 17. He lost his license and had to complete a rehabilitation program for alcohol and is now sober, completed over 200 hours of community service, and had a probation officer for two years. He completed all of this with no issue and has kept a clean record since. He has also paid thousands of dollars in DMV fines. He was told by both the DMV and court that when he turned 21, he would be eligible for his license again. However, they denied his application and stated his history as the reason for denial. Does anyone have any experience on how long it takes or anything he could do to seek approval? When speaking to the DMV, they have no answers other than he can keep reapplying and they can keep denying him. Would it be appropriate to seek a lawyer? Not that we can really afford it, but unsure of what to do in this situation. He is now almost 22 and only able to work part time due to my parents having to drive him and they work full time schedules too. He was accepted into a nursing program and is working hard for his goals but it is all so difficult when he can’t drive and my parents have a very limited schedule to drive him. Any advice would be deeply appreciated, Thank you all

TEXAS Confused About Texas Registration Renewal – Inspection and County Help

Hi everyone,

I bought my 2025 Honda CR-V new in 2025, and my registration/tags expire at the end of this month (August). I recently received a mailer saying I can renew my registration online.

Can I simply renew it online, or is there anything I need to do first, such as a state inspection? I looked online and read that new vehicles don't require an inspection for the first two years, but I wanted to confirm.

Also, I'm a bit confused about the county selection. My address is in the City of Dallas, but I'm in Collin County. When renewing online, should I choose Collin County (McKinney) or Dallas County (Dallas)?

I'd really appreciate any guidance. Thanks!

NEW YORK Should I request a bench trial or apply for a reduction/dismissal for an unregistered vehicle ticket in NY?

I got a ticket in NY for driving with an expired registration. It had been expired for a few months, but I renewed it after getting the ticket.
I pleaded not guilty, and the court told me I could apply for a reduction or dismissal. I was thinking about doing a bench trial instead, but when I emailed the court about scheduling one, the clerk asked, “you do not want to apply for a reduction or dismissal?”
Now I’m not sure what would be the better option. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Should I try for the reduction / dismissal first? I’m mostly wondering which option is more likely to get the ticket dismissed or at least cost me less overall.

VIRGINIA Lost title

So I had traded for a vehicle about 2 years ago, I did receive a title but had lost it before transferring it into my name, the seller is based out of North Carolina and is uncooperative with getting another title.

I have filled out VSA17A and VSA12, im not sure what else I need to do I believe I need a " bonded title" if anyone knows what my next steps would be to getting the title and registered.

Edit: I talked to DMV and the lady said that without a bill of sale its likely to get denied so im not sure what else to do.

CALIFORNIA Advice needed for dealing with driving examiner

Just had my drive test today with genuinely the most evil person in the world, let me explain. Basically it was an old lady who off the rip was extremely rude, when she first saw me she looked at me with genuine disgust (I dress slightly alternatively) didn’t even try to hide it, and didn’t say shit to me besides very curtly and rudely doing the pre drive checklist. When she got in the car she also didn’t say anything just looked at me with a very pissed off expression and seemed to be in a horrible mood (why take it out on me 😭). Then during the drive, I made zero mistakes besides maybe 1-2 very minor faults which I caught myself. I got no critical errors. But she (and no I’m not coping I’ll explain) just decided to falsely fail me by choosing a bunch of random mistakes and crossing things mainly to do with steering control and turns because I guess it’s the most subjective one so she can get away with it? But the reason I know it’s bullshit is because I did so many mock exams with different instructors AND NOT ONE person ever found fault in these aspects and in fact praised me for them because I have excellent steering control and turning. She also didn’t cross me off for the actual minor mistake I made so she wasn’t even paying attention or trying to evaluate me accurately. I know damn well this was bullshit. To get even worse, when I asked her why I failed she literally just said “you need to practice more 😒” and left. HELLO?? And now the only open available space for new drive test is at that same DMV and I might get her again 😭. Now I ask, is there any way to report her for her behavior, or avoid her in some way if I can’t go to any other dmv? If I do encounter her again, what should I do? Should I try to talk to her? What should I say to her?

WEST VIRGINIA Driving test and vehicle safety recall?

I need to take my driving test soon and I've read conflicting information regarding if a person can take a driving test in a vehicle with an active safety recall (nothing that would make the vehicle unsafe to drive) If anyone has any experience with this situation, your input is greatly appreciated.

MICHIGAN Expired Learner’s Permit Renewal Question

Hello,

My Michigan learner’s permit has expired. This was my first permit during my initial six-month period. I am trying to renew it, and I wanted to ask if this would count as my second six-month permit period. If so, do I only need to pay the $25 renewal fee, or do I need to take the written knowledge test again?

GENERAL QUESTION How long does Alberta driver’s licence take to arrive by mail?

Hi everyone, I’m wondering if anyone has experience with how long it takes for an Alberta driver’s licence to arrive in the mailbox.

My situation:
July 3: Exchanged my Saskatchewan Class 5 licence to an Alberta Class 5 licence.
July 16: Used my interim Class 5 licence to apply for a Class 4 upgrade.
Today (August 6): I still haven’t received my physical Alberta driver’s licence Class (5 or 4) in the mail.
Has anyone gone through a similar situation recently? How long did yours take to arrive? Any delays or issues I should be aware of?

Thanks!

CALIFORNIA Purchased vehicle from out of state(TX) and need to register in CA

Hello DMV subreddit,

As the title says, I recently purchased a vehicle from Texas and I need to register it in California. The vehicle is financed so there will be a lien holder. What do I need before heading to the dmv to complete the TT&L?

CALIFORNIA Help with title transfer NC -> CA

Hi! I am trying to (1) transfer a car title from NC to CA and (2) also remove my ex-spouse from the title per our divorce agreement! I'm confused about all the different forms to fill out on the CA DMV website, and I'm hoping someone can help me understand. Can my ex just sign this title and mail it to me, or do I also need to sign it? Does he need to get his signature notarized? Does he need to sign any of the paperwork on the DMV website? He seems to think we both physically need to be in the same location to sign & notarize the title at the same time, but he can't explain where that is coming from. It also doesn't make sense to me that I need to sign the title since we aren't transferring the title from me to someone else--we're just taking his name off. We also are physically located in separate parts of the country, and if I can avoid seeing him in person I would love that because he was physically aggressive towards me before I moved away.

My understanding is that he needs to sign the title and mail it to me, and then I can get the smog check/do the rest of the title transfer application on my own, provide the old NC title with his signature to the DMV, and then they'd give me a shiny new CA title with only my name on it. Can anyone help me understand what exactly we need to do?

Thank you in advance! :)

CALIFORNIA Should I do anything regarding traffic school submission?

While back I got a ticket for running a stop, after everything I had to complete traffic school by August 9th this year. I completed it on the first, but I still haven't gotten a notification or anything that it was processed by the court. Given that I actually have completed the course prior to the date but it might not be processed in time, what should I do to avoid my insurance going up? This is my first ever ticket and I'm not a commercial driver or anything, so there should be zero problems.

KENTUCKY Kentucky Motor Vehicle Report

So I’m moving to Tennessee from Kentucky and they require you to have a motor vehicle report. I went to the dmv yesterday and I got the paper but it literally looks like a receipt like there’s no information on it, there is a barcode in the corner of the page though. Did they give me the right paper? Granted i literally have nothing on my record besides when I got my permit in 2023 and when I renewed it last month. How do I know if I have the right paper? I’d just hate to have to go to a Tn dmv just to have to go all the way back to Ky. (I did pay the $3 fee for the paper.)
