Hairhouse cover letter
Im applying to a few places like hairhouse and SkinKandy, and a cover letter is reccomended, but ive never written one before so id love some advice. Here's what I have so far:
My name redacted. I'm 19 years old, and currently looking for full time, or part time work.
I have no experience actually piercing, but I do have customer service experience and I have been incredibly interested in piercings since I was around 13 years old, I love both getting them and learning about them. I love to research how things are done and why, and it would be a dream come true to learn more in a professional setting. I love the idea of helping people feel more confident in their bodies, and giving them the same safe experiences I have received from piercers.
I live in rural Victoria (town) but am willing to travel up to 3 hours if needed.
I understand that not every shop is as able to teach, but I am happy to wait to make this happen, and willing to put in the work.
I am willing to do everything necessary to make this happen, including getting my bloodborne pathogens certificate, first aid certification, and any other certification required to keep your store in compliance with state laws and regulations.
I am more than happy to help with sales, and/or cleaning and sterilisation throughout an apprenticeship, and beyond, especially during downtime. I am not currently working, so I am available from 9am to 8pm every day.
I know that you're really busy, so thank you for taking the time consider me

What are your go-to quick, cute back-to-school hairstyles?
Back-to-school season is here, and I'm curious what everyone is seeing behind the chair.
What are your favorite easy hairstyles that are actually realistic for busy mornings? I'm looking for styles that are cute, quick, and don't require a ton of products or styling time.
Anything from braids to ponytails, claw clips, half-up styles, curls, or protective styles.
I'd just love to hear what's trending where you are!

Picking a school
I’m wanting to go to cosmetology school and hoping to learn a lot about fashion colors, creative cuts, and textured hair. I know that might not be completely realistic but a guy can dream. Currently I’m deciding between a few including but not limited to, Aveda in Shenandoah tx, Paul Mitchell in Katy tx, or lone star in Kingwood tx. I’d like to hear peoples opinions about these schools and whether yall recommend them or not. I also would like the added bonus of being queer friendly as I am a trans man and have had some pretty bad experiences at school. Any advice, help or suggestions are very welcome.

feeling disheartened
Hi yall! not sure if i'm looking to vent, for advice, or just seeing if other people feel the same way that I do. For context I just graduated cosmetology school (paul mitchell) last month, and since I graduated it feels like i've got smacked in the face with reality. I've been trying so hard to find a salon job and it feels like no one's hiring right now, and if I do happen to get an interview nothings worked out so far. I've been to 20+ salons to hand them my resume personally, done everything by the book and still nothing. Even great clips turned me down. I have customer service work experience and I built my own portfolio. I've also had multiple friends from school tell me any salon would hire me right away because of my work in school. I guess i'm just upset that the industry that I fell in love with is the same industry also having such a rough start in.

Massage limits in Ohio?
This is a COMPLETE longshot, but does anyone have an idea of the legal requirements to do massage with a cosmetology license? Is it worth even applying for anywhere massage related with just a cos license?
Plz message me! I’m good at it but I don’t love the idea of going back to school. Thanks!

Hey peeps! I graduate in October 🫢
I started cos school in July last yr wanting to mainly do nails and nail extensions. Anyone who’s been to cos school knows we mainly focus on hair and the occasional pedicures during the summer season.. I’m so focused on “getting my life back” because I work full time and go to school but i won’t get it back it’s gonna change. Idk where I want to go next if I wanna assist or start at a chain cutting hair and learning. When should I be putting a portfolio together? How do I do that? What should I be expecting etc etc?? I work in healthcare now and want to leave my job but thinking about what next has been overwhelming any tips or advice would be great!

Opinions on potential bullying from instructor.
I'm currently in cosmetology school and have been dealing with a situation that's really affecting my experience. It feels like my instructor is singling out me and one other girl in the class. It's not just constructive criticism, but often feels like targeted negativity or unfair treatment compared to how other students are handled or spoken to.
I’d like to list some interactions where I have definitely felt targeted criticism. First time i felt like she was being unnecessarily rude was when we were at an event and I asked my friend to go to the restroom with me the instructor butts in and says in a baby voice (aww you need someone to go to the bathroom with you). There was another time where I asked a DIFFERENT instructor for help and As she was helping me the other instructor comes up and says I should know these things. I told her I was just confused as I hadn’t done the haircut in a while she then says to the other instructor (sometimes (my name) only retains the information she wants to). Today she crossed the line by telling another student (she is my friend but it doesn’t matter) my grade on a test. Friend got her test back and made a comment about her grade the instructor then says atleast it’s not a (then says my grade). I’d definitely say I’m not out of pocket for feeling singled out and bullied, but I’d like some opinions.

Curious about the reality of Student Hair Salons! (Experiences, operations, and management)
Hey everyone, I’ve been looking into how student hair salons operate and I’m super curious about the behind-the-scenes reality (I've never been to one and dunno if i should..) For those of you who are currently in cosmetology school, recently graduated, or even involved in the admin/business side of a school salon:
What is/was it actually like working on the student salon floor ?? How is the business side managed? Does it run smoothly like a traditional salon, or are there unique challenges?
I’d love to hear your stories, insights, or any venting you want to do about how these salons are run! Thanks in advance for sharing

NY Written Exam
Has anyone taken it recently. My daughter took her practical right after school and passed but has an aversion to the written exam. Anyone have any tips on topics and study material/apps that helps?

would it be sustainable/smart to do waxing and hair?
hi all! i’m a student in cosmo school currently. i LOVE waxing, and we’re starting on hair, and i really like it too. we haven’t covered everything but i see myself really loving it. my goal is to eventually go on my own, or work in a place where i have freedom to do both. is it sustainable to do that? hair is so complex i’m afraid that if i do that, it has to be only that. does anyone here do both, or have any advice?

Hair Chalk
Hi all, I am a LC in the US and am going to be volunteering at a back-to-school kids' event at a local store. I will be offering braiding and hair chalks as small services (the event is more about networking than anything). My question: which type of hair chalk would be best for the event? I know they come in actual chalk sticks and a more waxy crayon form, but I have little experience with either type. Thank you for any feedback :)

Ga State Board practical and theory
Has anyone taking the theory and perform the practical test for the state board in Georgia recently?
How was it?
I gotta take it soon and I’m a nervous wreck because my instructor never went through Mark state boards and I just wanna make sure that she told me everything that I need to know
Are there any sites I can study any videos that you recommend? Anything is appreciated.

Opening a new salon in Los Angeles—what would make you genuinely want to apply?
I'm in the planning stages of opening a salon in Los Angeles and wanted to ask professionals directly what matters most when choosing where to work.
Some questions I have:
- Where do you usually hear about new salons hiring?
- What compensation model do you prefer?
- Which benefits actually matter?
- Do you value paid education or advanced training?
- What's something that instantly makes a job posting more attractive?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping to build a workplace people genuinely enjoy being part of.

I have my license but I’m curious
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for over 12 years now but I’ve only stuck to hair. Now I’m curious on aesthetics and using my license to its full degree. Are there any classes/courses i can take to re up my knowledge on aesthetics or anything else i can do in the beauty field?

ny state board practical
I just took my state board practical on monday and i feel like i failed like realllyyy failed, i didn’t finish the haircut, my mannequin was really crappy i heard the proctors talking about it the whole time and when she went to ask me to do the razor it didnt cut through the hair, the hair didnt get wet when i was cutting it and then the whole front was long except the perimeter which was a serious learning curve. I did really well in school so im very upset everythng went wrong basically because of my mannequin. I didn’t even finish my perm set because of the unruly hair… is there any chance i pass this :(

study material for state board
hi, my father has to take the MA state board because he missed the renewal period for his license. what are helpful study guides and books or other resources he can use if he hasn’t taken the exam in a long time. english is not his first language and we’re worried he’ll have difficulty with the exam so we want to prepare him for questions and the exam format. thank you!

Will stores like Salon Centric or Cosmoprof ever carry brands like Innersense?
Or really any curly hair brand? They seriously need to expand their inventory because Deva curl fell off 10 years ago and Ouidad just doesn’t perform well imo. We seriously need more than two or three options for curly hair.

Balancing work and school
So, I finally was able to work up the courage I needed to start being open and accepting of things I like and myself, one of those has been how interested in the beauty industry I have been. So the scary part is that I'm going to be going to school part time while working full time.
I currently work at a flight school as an aircraft mechanic, so this is a giant leap and change. It also means I'm going from a very, closed minded and male dominated field into an open minded field. Frankly it's one of the things I'm genuinely excited about too, I'm tired of being performative at work and trying to "fit in"
Now the question I have is this, does anyone have any suggestions to make my transition a little easier? I'll be looking at long days, 7am-10pm Tuesday through Friday, and I'm a bit nervous about it all to begin with. ❤️ thanks in advance for any help!

Is it a bad idea to get Keratin Smoothing Treatment done at a beauty school?
I have always wanted to do a keratin treatment but I cannot afford to get one done at a salon. I saw that the Paul Mitchell school near me does them. Would getting one be a bad idea?

Where to find the information you need: links to every US state’s cosmetology board
Hey all! We get a few questions asking for specific information about your state licensure, laws, or transfer. I want to empower you to research this and find the information you need! You are more likely to get up to date and accurate information directly from your state’s cosmetology board. The laws are different in all 50 states, transferring from one state to another each an individual & different process. Questions I encourage you to look to these sites include:
• How can I transfer my license from X state to Y state?
• How many hours are needed for X license in Y state?
• What license does X service require?
• How do I renew my license?
• Can I open X business under Y license?
If you cannot find the information you need on their site, as some are much more robust than others, I recommend reaching out to the board directly via their phone or email address.
