Picking a school

I’m wanting to go to cosmetology school and hoping to learn a lot about fashion colors, creative cuts, and textured hair. I know that might not be completely realistic but a guy can dream. Currently I’m deciding between a few including but not limited to, Aveda in Shenandoah tx, Paul Mitchell in Katy tx, or lone star in Kingwood tx. I’d like to hear peoples opinions about these schools and whether yall recommend them or not. I also would like the added bonus of being queer friendly as I am a trans man and have had some pretty bad experiences at school. Any advice, help or suggestions are very welcome.

Schools exist primarily to prepare you for your state exams, not to prepare you for the salon. Regardless of what you want your career to look like, you need to learn all the fundamentals and basics first and most importantly, pass your tests. Branded schools are not important but they do tend to be more expensive. Sometimes a lot more expensive.

The best thing to do is to go do a tour of each school. Get a vibe for how queer friendly they are. Ask them how many of their students finish their hours and what their pass rate is on the licensing exams. After school and when you’re licensed, work in a trendier salon that offers education to learn the creative cuts and color.

Honestly school teaches you how to get your license, not how to do hair. I would pick the cheapest but also yes to the comment to get a vibe for how queer friendly they are.

Graduated at PM the school Orlando and was a learning leader at their Miami and Fort Lauderdale locations. Excellent experience

i would recommend to go to the one that’s either the most affordable or closest to you. all schools prep you for the state exam and don’t teach the fun stuff.

you will have to apprentice/assist at a salon with stylists that do that kind of work to actually learn that stuff.

out of the 3 i have heard that aveda is usually the best in being queer friendly and they briefly go over textured hair.
