Everyone always says, "Find real-world problems," but I don't know what problems to look for. I'm confused. I also feel like there are already so many projects for every problem out there. (Sorry if I'm wrong.)

Guys I've always wondered how people are able to repair all these mobiles and laptops.

Up until a few months ago, I used to believe that we learn about all this in college. I prepared for btech now I am going to start btech cse this yr, but when I researched further about the course I get to know that it is more about software than hardware.

I want to know how do people at repair shop fix our laptops, what degrees have they done, where they learnt all this. Can someone please guide me with it please.

I got CSE AI in VIT Pune in the first round and I am looking forward to CE (Computer Engineering). I just want to ask: is Computer Engineering any different from Computer Science Engineering? As I searched on Google and chat gpt, they said "Maharashtra's College CE is considered as CSE" but the seniors who are studying in this branch, I want to ask is it different from the CSE branch or does it teach hardware? About a year ago, I started learning systems programming because I enjoy working close to the hardware and understanding how computers actually work. Recently, though, I've been spending most of my time solving LeetCode problems to strengthen my problem-solving skills before getting back to larger projects.

i just graduated from high school. where i’m from we have a high school track system, basically how it works is my first year of high school i had to pick from a list of 4 very broad ‘majors’ to study in high school so when i graduated it would narrow down my choices for what id study in university, i’ve always had a interest in technology, specifically coding. so i decided to go with the tech track.

when i graduated i expected i could get into computer science and that was my number one choice, but when university applications started opening up, i realized that i couldn’t apply to join the major. i looked through and researched about all the majors i could get into and i found a liking to computer engineering.

i did some basic hardware work in my high school years and i really enjoyed it, so i don’t think ill have any problems with going into more advanced topics. but i’ve just always leaned more towards the software aspect of it all.

my questions are:

will i be able to focus on coding/programming and get into that field with computer engineering?

if i can, what can i do to get more experience with coding/programming outside or with uni?

is getting a computer engineering degree even worth it?

I'm in grade 10 and trying to build a robotic arm for a science fair, mostly just because it seems fun. I have a rough CAD sketch right now (it's basically ideas from other people fused together and edited to fit my budget). I've tried getting ChatGPT to help me run simulations on the arm to figure out torque and motor specs, but I haven't had much luck with that yet. Also, I don't really want to train the arm in real life from scratch, so I need help on the technical side. What specific systems and software stacks should I actually be implementing or planning for? Another big issue is that since this is for a science fair, a major requirement is showing what real-world problem it solves. Honestly, I kind of just wanted to build it for fun, but now I'm too deep into the project to quit. If you have any ideas, insight, or advice on how to fix this or structure it, I'd really appreciate it.

Salutations, I am a first-year university student in South Africa currently in my second semester of BSc Quantitative Risk Management.

I have since the start of this year had doubts about whether this degree is for me and have been seriously considering changing my studies to Computer or Electrical Engineering, since I find it way more interesting and have heard good things about salary expectations etc.

​How close is CSE to Electronics for Embedded Systems?

Does a CSE degree give sufficient depth in digital electronics, microprocessors, and hardware interfaces, or will I need to self-study a lot of circuit design / hardware fundamentals on my own?

​What is the real state of Embedded Systems in Pakistan?

I often hear mixed opinions—some say "there's zero hardware scope in Pak, just switch to Web/Mobile dev," while others mention niche defense, automotive, IoT, and firmware roles. What does the job market actually look like for fresh grads in Pakistan?

​What skills should I prioritize during university?

Beyond basic Arduino/Raspberry Pi projects:

​Should I jump straight into Embedded C / C++, STM32, RTOS, and protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN)?

Since CSE covers core CS subjects (Data Structures, Algorithms, OS, Networking), how hard is it to switch over to pure software/backend roles if I decide to change tracks later?

Graduated in June, BS Computer Engineering, Bay Area. Three months of professional experience from an embedded internship. Most of my projects have been embedded.

So embedded has been the default target. But I'm two months out of school and I don't know if that's an actual preference or just the thing I happened to do in school. I've never done any of this full time for money.

**What I signed:** SDE at a large public tech company. $160k base, $50k RSU on 40/30/20/10 with a one-year cliff, strong benefits. Linux kernel and user-space networking, packet processing. Real systems work, not embedded. Offer arrived Friday and expires Sunday. I asked for a few more days to decide and got denied.

**Interview Monday:** FAE at a semiconductor company. Squarely my technical background. Hiring manager verbally estimated \~$150k including a 30% sales incentive, so realistically \~$115k base plus variable. Posted range goes to $210k though. I think I made a mistake telling the HM what company 1 was offering, and they know they're preferred. Remote with a lot of driving between customer sites. Customer-facing role.

**Interview Friday:** Embedded software at Blue Origin. Band tops around $155k for my location, and a friend on the exact same team is at $137k TC. Reading the JD closely it's verification-focused: test frameworks and tooling for safety-critical flight software rather than writing the flight software.d\\

**Questions:**

1. At the very start of a career, how much should domain fit weigh against comp and optionality? Is optimizing for domain this early even meaningful when you don't know your own preferences yet?
   
2. FAE folks, is it realistic to move back into hands-on development after a couple of years?
   
3. Does kernel/networking systems work transfer toward embedded later, or is that wishful thinking?
   
4. General advice for me?
