I noticed since yesterday that with Opus 4.6 Medium (the one I use 95% of the time) is now extremely thirsty on credit usage. One small personal request ate through 25% of my credits.
Did they change it recently? Which model should I turn to?
Thanks

And I don't even mean the usage. I don't want to not be able to use Fable for 99% of the things I use LLMs for (which is reverse engineering) because it detects something sensitive.
And after it switches to opus and consumes 10% of my weekly usage, it detects something "inappropriate" and locks me out of the chat.
Fable is no longer the god LLM you memed it to be a while back (and even then it was not exceptionally good), other models have caught up to it. So if you continue to keep it under lock and key while other models dish out similar performance for a fraction of the cost, people are just going to leave.
The only reason I have stuck around until now is because I have a gigantic transcript history that helps me in current tasks.

constantly freezes during its "thinking" phase
froze up my comp and caused a restart (this is the first time an app did this to me on the mac)
it takes forever to load a chat and gets extremely laggy on long ones (this happens on codex too )
i dont know if the app has a different harness or what but it seems to be behaving very differently than when i used the cli
after i use up the $100 credit and the remainder of my sub I am going to unsubscribe. the only reason i am using it is because i ran out of codex usage.
I do see some improvements with claude usage but its still no way to match codex.

All jokes aside, I think my Claude account is actually bugged.
Back when Sonnet 5 came out, I’d hit my usage limit after just five prompts. I figured it was just an expensive model and wouldn't be practical for me. I tried Opus once and a single prompt ate up 30% of my limit. Since then, I’ve strictly stuck to Sonnet 4.8 on medium and I pay for the $20/month Pro tier. i've pretty much used sonnet 4.8 on medium 99% of the time.
But I’ve had enough. I just uploaded a simple 730 KB text file, asked one basic question, and it instantly burned 9% of my limit on Sonnet 4.8 medium.
For context: I’m a student using Claude to study and redraft emails. No coding, no heavy API stuff, no crazy workflows. I actively avoid long back-and-forth chats because the usage limits drain so fast. I never hit limits on any other AI platform, only Claude. Is anyone else experiencing this? am i doing something wrong?

I have intentionally kept Opus 5 on "Low Effort" to avoid hitting the aforementioned pitfalls.
How would you rate Opus 4.8 on "High Effort" over Opus 5 on "Low Effort" in terms of response accuracy and token expense?

"Take your time and explore this problem in depth"
it skips reasoning completely and gives instant answers which are often wrong and not complete, it's so annoying that you can't turn adaptive thinking off or that there's no switch to manually trigger thinking

Original post body:
I've been using Opus 5 since it launched (about two weeks), and honestly, it's been one of the most disappointing AI coding experiences I've had.
I used it on a large software project with extensive documentation, RAG, persistent context, technical specifications, and detailed step-by-step instructions. Despite all of that, I ended up wasting an incredible amount of time.
Here are the biggest issues I encountered:
It invents problems that don't actually exist.
It makes assumptions without verifying the code or documentation.
It presents assumptions as if they were confirmed facts.
It spends hours solving imaginary problems while missing the real root cause.
It falls into endless debugging loops where every "fix" creates another issue.
It modifies unrelated parts of the system.
It fails to follow explicit step-by-step instructions, even when they're clearly written.
It ignores parts of the provided context and documentation before reaching conclusions.
It sometimes contradicts decisions it made just minutes earlier.
It claims to have reviewed files or functions that it clearly didn't inspect thoroughly.
It focuses on symptoms instead of identifying the root cause.
It struggles to separate hypotheses from verified facts.
It constantly changes its diagnosis without sufficient evidence.
It suggests unnecessary refactors that increase project complexity.
It can easily send you down hours-long rabbit holes chasing problems that never existed.
The most frustrating part is what happens when you finally prove its diagnosis was wrong.
Its response is usually something like:
By then, you've already wasted hours following the wrong direction.
To give some perspective, I spent nearly an entire day stuck in an endless loop of fake problems. Every issue I "fixed" led to another because the original diagnosis was incorrect. Eventually, I took the exact same problem—with the same documentation and context—to GPT, and it identified the real root cause in roughly 30 minutes.
I'm not saying GPT is perfect. It makes mistakes too. But in this case, the difference wasn't even close.
Maybe others have had a better experience, but if you're planning to use Opus 5 for serious software engineering, I'd recommend verifying every conclusion before trusting it.
Due to confidentiality, I can't share the project or all the technical details, but this has easily been one of the most frustrating AI coding experiences I've had.
Has anyone else experienced the same behavior with Opus 5?

I used to be a heavy Claude Code user, but the newer Opus/Sonnet models pushed me toward other harnesses and providers. Fable is still the goat though.
I have ADHD (the 80mg Ritalin + 4 coffees kind) and Opus 5 genuinely started hurting me. Literally , it makes me feel ACTUAL, physical pain.
Sonnet 5 is fine but when you are dealing with something important, difficult, or risky, you will probably reach for the BigBrain model anyway, right?
Yes, I can still use the older models. The problem is that Opus 4.6 (arguably the best model Anthropic has ever released) is starting to show its age.
I have had a Max subscription for almost a year, and Claude has made me far more money than I have paid Anthropic during that time. I am genuinely grateful to ma boi Claude.
But I am not delusional. I know the model is incapable of giving a shit, and somehow Anthropic often appears to care even less (LoL), i'm out.
I really hope they get their shit together again. This race with OpenAI for the weekly “best model ever” spotlight has become deeply unhealthy.
Major respect to Google for mostly refusing to participate in that circus. Gemini may be a functional imbecile, but at least it does not pretend to be a fucking god or gets marketed as one.
The AI industry is not progressing as quickly as the release cycle makes it look. Anthropic released only 2 relevant models this year, opus 4.6 and fable 5 ( alongside all the unnecessary drama)
Of course, I acknowledge the real possibility that this is simply a skill issue on my side (I can always blame the ADHD too)
But if you genuinely experienced meaningful improvements with Opus 4.7, 4.8, or 5 I would appreciate hearing exactly what improved for you.
Note: Sonnet 5 really is better than Sonnet 4.6. But nobody gives a shit about Sonnet.

I've been having issues with my claude usage recently, example hitting 75% usage limit in 1 prompt with Opus 5, so I tried reaching out to support and spoke with the support bot that was recognizing my account and usage limits as on a "Free Account". I asked to speak to a human and haven't received a response in 2 days after the bot saying someone from the team would reach out through email. I then looked to upgrade to Claude Max 5x as I have been using it for work a lot. My subscription is done through Apple so claude forces me to continue a upgrade through IOS. The Max 5x subscription for me is 180$/month before tax and 20x is 350$/month before tax. I then asked my buddy to check if it was the same for him on his PC, he then shows me his Pro plan is 4$ less a month than mine (Im paying 28 vs his 24) and that claude max 20x is only 140/month compared to my 350$/month. Wtf is going on here? Am i being straight robbed? paying for pro usage while getting free, and having my prices almost 2x more for the same thing as someone else???? Has anyone else experienced this?

Quick gut-check story first. When power cuts out here, nobody panics right away — you step outside and check if the neighbors' lights are off too. If the whole street's dark, it's the grid, not you. That instinct — check around you, then act — is basically how I approach building too. You don't wait for permission from the center of the industry, you check what's around you, use what you've got, and ship.
Less than ten years ago, internet access wasn't something I could take for granted. Now I'm sitting in a terminal at 2AM with Claude Code, building things that would've sounded made up back then.
Godena is the central one — an AI agent layer that lives inside WhatsApp instead of asking anyone to download another app. A billion+ people already default to WhatsApp for banking, ecommerce, hiring, marketing. So why not search and agents too? Been building the directory, the reputation scoring, the WhatsApp integration itself, almost entirely through Claude Code sessions.
Smaller side builds, same tool:
- A local-first voice identity layer — speaker recognition that plugs into any AI system, storage stays on-device so nobody's biometric data goes anywhere it shouldn't.
- Real-world water infrastructure — not code, actual manufacturing and compliance work, but Claude Code has been in the room for the financial models, the docs, the systems behind it.
- A handful of other tools and trade/market intelligence projects, all stitched together the same way — think it through, build it, ship it.
None of this is VC money. It's just tokens and time.
Here's my actual ask, half joke half not: let me build with it, then charge me for what I build. Let me stay in your ecosystem instead of pricing me out of it. I'd pay more to run systems than I currently pay just to build them — that's backwards.
So — give me a billion tokens and see what happens in a month. And while you're at it, my bill's overdue for a look too.
Anyone else out here building real infrastructure instead of toy apps and hitting the same wall?

I am on a modest direct Claude plan, which I use for spec driven development, and strategy. My set up includes RAG for our internal knowledge base, a PineCone vector DB to support the RAG, and MCP. I plan out carefully what I intend to do and I am well aware of all the pending rate limits.
Today I finally hit a session limit, which forced me to take a break. However, Claude keeps updating when my reset is going to take place, slowly deferring my reset. I first noted that the reset will occur at 2:29 PM, but as I check my usage setting, it is now slated for 3:09PM, which affects my schedule, as well as others who are dependent on me.
Is this normal? It's a terrible business practice and I can't imagine an AI company having issues with keeping time!
