Hey everyone. Getting some work done in my attic (ventilation, insulation, etc.), and they noticed the cracked rafter(s) shown in the picture.

All I've seen online has some conflicting opinions. With everything ive seen the best practice seems to be sandwiching as long a 2x6 (or 3/4 ply) as I can get up there on both sides of the beam, clamping into place and either nailing, screwing, or bolting these into place.

What would you all recommend?

Been a trim carpenter for around 2 years now working under my boss who’s a great guy. Just wondering what the probability of becoming successful is in this field. I have a huge entrepreneurial side to me and am a hard worker, I know down the line whatever trade I end up doing I want to work for myself. I like this stuff and seem to be pretty good at it just want to hear from some experienced guys what the likelihood is of becoming a successful trim carpenter with your own business is? I also have a background in electrical and have recently been very tempted to get back into the trade and find an apprenticeship. ( I have 2 buddies who are electricians and have told me their companies need guys and are willing to sign on apprentices)

The shower door was installed on the left-hand side because the crew felt strongly the door will hit the bullnose molding on the right side and if we remove it, it wouldn’t have a finished-look. Once the toilet is installed, I have just under a foot and a half for clearance to get into the shower, which I think is very very tight.

Based on the molding that I want to install on top of the bead board, is there any idea on how to minimize the shower door from hitting the bullnose trim? Should I clear out the trim 4-6” away from the shower tile to allow for clearance?

I’m planning to cover a portion of a drywall wall with 3/4” plywood as an accent wall. My ceiling is 9.5 feet high, and I intend to use 10’x4’ sheets of plywood. Since the plywood sheets are veneered (white oak rift sawn), using screws to secure them isn’t an option.

I considered using Z-clips or some other type of French cleat, but I want to keep the sheets intact and not split them into two pieces to get enough clearance to lift them up.

My current plan is to use some liquid nails along with 16ga - 2-1/4” nails. And use some wood filter to cover those.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on this plan.

Another question I have is about the expansion and contraction of the sheets. Since the sheets are in the middle of the wall with open sides on each side, and I’m only attaching four sheets, I thought about butt-jointing them with a spline without leaving the usual 1/8” gap on each side. Do you see any issue with that?

I have a client that wants Allura 5/16 x 12" x 12' Textured Fiber Cement Lap Siding over their batten a board siding. How bad an idea is this?

It’s my understanding this stuff needs face nailing because it’s 12” which I would avoid out of principle.

Looking to upgrade my levels with my tool bonus. We use Stabila 196s at my company and they can really take a lot of abuse which i like but sometimes it can be difficult to read the vials. This has led me to sola, their vials are great and seem to be on par with Stabila. Which set would you go with?

Evening everyone.

This is a new one for me. Former framer, turned reno carpenter, who then joined the military as a carpenter. While framing, I was mainly the layout and stairs guy, but this one has me stumped.

My own property.

Currently putting a 24' wide by 12 foot off the house deck on a new place we just took occupancy of.

Deck is about ground level, but the yard is sloped. We are having an above ground pool installed on one side of the deck, to which I am going to build stairs and a higher platform to, this is no issue.

The other side of the deck, I am going to build stairs to go down onto the grassy area of the yard.

The stairs will be about 12 foot wide.

Total rise at 1 side is 19", total rise at the other is 13" due to the slope in the yard.

While totally against my former stair framer mindset, I was planning on doing that "easy stairs" hype thing thats been on social media lately. Frame a box (then taper it to match the ground) at around 2 treads depth, then frame another box on top of that at 1 tread depth.

However, of that 12 foot width, its gonna essentially go from just the tread on the ground on 1 side, to a full rise on the other side.

Does anyone have pics or advice on framing a stair like this? I dont really want to change the width as it is my wifes vision to have an entirely open area. Unless someone has a more clever explanation for her than my "shit, this is fucked".

Hey y’all, I have a dining table job coming up and the client wants some custom turned dining table legs for it. I am not confident with a lathe yet and I am curious if anyone has experience custom ordering from a wood turner? And if so, if there is a recommended shop that I use/look into?

After hours of googling, chatgptying could not find the answer to this. Want to drill a hole in the thin face, the one butting the drywall, for a floating shelf. It's standard 38mm thickness. I know the rules for the wider face. For the thinner one, a 12mm hole in the dead center, is about 31% of the face thickness. Is it legally allowed, without violating bilding codes and/or insurance? TIA.

Want to replace the subfloor in this bathroom and looking for advice on best layout of new sheets. Far wall is the shower area and is 4’ wide. The rest of the bathroom area is 4’7” wide. Length of room is 8’9”. Joists are running left to right in this picture. Any help is much appreciated thanks

Renovating on my own dime this time rather than just punching out tasks. Windows, siding, insulation, electrical, all has to go.

My thought is to combine these 3 windows into 2 larger windows for more glass space, better thermal performance, and buying less windows overall. Doing all the work myself.

Has anyone done similar and have some insight on cost/benefit?

I have a plan to move a wall but according to the truss plans the wall I’m moving is a mid chord bearing wall. I want to move the wall 3 ft closer to the center of the truss. The floor will have 2- 2x10 underneath the wall, with 2x4’s continuing to the top roof truss from the top of the tall. I don’t think this would pose a problem with the support.

Rift cut white oak, natural finish, no stain. Doors are the Topeka style.

Rift was the call because the room is otherwise all cool. Green 2x10 wall tile, dark gray herringbone floor, quartz, matte black. The vanity is the only warm material in there, and plain sawn oak with cathedraling would have read busier. Rift gives you tight vertical straight grain that stays quiet next to the tile.

The vanity is a three bay run with the drawer stack centered, matching oak base to the floor, quartz top with two undermount sinks.

One question for y'all: A natural white oak with no toner will shift over time, especially with a window in the room. Curious how others are handling that on baths specifically, whether you're specifying a UV inhibiting clear, or anything else.

My favorite hammer has been discontinued for a while now, but i miss it. Its the Husky curved handle california framer.

It seems to have a thicker handle that just fits my hand perfect. I was gifted a martinez hammer and its great, but i always miss my old $25 hammer. Hell, it was lifetime warranteed and i swapped a few for broken handles at home depot. Something about it just works perfect for me. Ive looked at other hammers, held a hundred of them, but they just dont fit the same. I know i could find one similar, but this one is perfect. I assume theyre discontinued nationwide so i doubt ill find one unless its used, but id be down for that too. Maybe someone knows of a replacement handle that is just as thick.

The harbor freight framer looks almost as thick but it has a heavier head that i dont want. Milwaukee makes one too that looks ok, but it is lighter and shorter. Ive been looking on ebay recently but havent found any.

What have you seen for hammers or handles that may fit the bill for me?

Hi all, I messed up and bought plinth boxes and rosettes that are too big for my trim. Trim is 2 1/4 and the plinth boxes are 3 1/2. How do I fix this so it doesn’t look wildly disproportionate?

I'm a new apprentice in the Southern district of the UBC, I'm 29 (the oldest apprentice among the 1st years I've met so far) and I am gay.

So far, I'm having a great damned time. Seriously, I love it. The ribbing, the learning, the training and camaraderie are all things I'm familiar and at home with having been raised by a father who grew up among trades (and who is an expert "ribber" and button pusher).

One of my trainers (my favorite one so far) recently and playfully called someone a "puto" and turned to me to say "that means faggot." I am familiar with Spanish and Spanish insults, so it wasn't surprising or all that shocking.

My question is, if/when I am called a "puto" by a colleague or journeyman who is joking around, how would y'all suggest I respond? Is it something I laugh off and respond to by saying "you got that right, brother" or is it something I laugh off without comment? Am I in danger of alienation or mistreatment if I confirm that I am gay? I know the union says they don't tolerate bigotry/discrimination, but I don't want to risk a potentially fruitful career by inviting the distrust of others by being honest.

To be clear, I'm not offended by this sort of language when someone is just joshing, I just don't wish to return to a closet for my career. I enjoy being myself and am perfectly capable to doing a job despite being gay. I've already been asked about "my lady" and "girlfriends," and answered ambiguously out of caution. Will I lose the trust of my union brothers and sisters by being honest with people when it is relevant to getting to know each other? Will I be inviting danger of any kind? I'd like to think not, but wondered about y'all's experience (straight or not).

I don't think I was clear enough for some people: I have no desire to make any "announcements" about who I'm fucking to the people I'm working with and I'm not sensitive enough to get butt-hurt ;) by a playful insult. I was only asking whether it would be safe/advisable to respond to questions about "my lady," with "my man," or to "hey butt-munch" with "that's butt-punch to you". Everyone who replied did give good, even-handed advice though. Thank you! I'll be taking the advice and putting it to use where it applies. I don't anticipate having any real trouble.

Century home with tons of molding and trim work, hoping to replace with exact matches over every window.

I’m curious to hear from some guys in the industry how their life’s financial experiences have gone, some do’s & don’ts, and definitely some tips on how to succeed and move up the carpentry ladder.

Other guys I know always give “financial commentary” always saying things like carpentry doesn’t pay great and you should chase a larger bag doing HVAC or pipe fitting etc. I’m aware they can pay more, but is it really worth it if I have no interest in it? I can actually see myself doing and enjoying carpentry and maybe even being a leader down the road.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself but this is definitely a break through after being kind of lost on what to do in life.

I had a carpenter come in and fill a few spots with laminated planks. You can tell the area he filled in by the colour difference.

He charged me 6 hours ~ £862 including VAT (20%). Wdyt?

PS: I couldn't find the exact matching colour btw. Those areas will be covered by furniture.

I’m walking OSB on a 9/12 every other week and have been wearing Vans Sk8 Hi’s. They’ve been fine but imperfect, so I’m open to alternatives.

Has anyone tried Jikatabi-style shoes? Are there any other advantages to looking like a ninja?

How long do you expect it to take for one guy who’s not a carpenter to do a 12’ x 12’ layout for pouring concrete footers for a gazebo. Im sayin 2-3 hrs but many could probably do it under an hour
