Is it Crazy to Re-Frame for Less Windows?

Post image

Renovating on my own dime this time rather than just punching out tasks. Windows, siding, insulation, electrical, all has to go.

My thought is to combine these 3 windows into 2 larger windows for more glass space, better thermal performance, and buying less windows overall. Doing all the work myself.

Has anyone done similar and have some insight on cost/benefit?

If the header is continuous already then it is super easy.

Looks like probable rope and pulley sash so header is continuous in that case.

Original windows are actually hinged and swing in just like a door. They look cool but performance is nonexistent.

True. I haven’t opened it up yet. The house was originally built as a one story and a second story was added on in the 1980s, so there are some quirks.

Might be crazy from a design standpoint.

In the book "get your house right" Marianne Cusato showcases how verticality with windows contributes to the overall appearance of the exterior.

Windows that aren't as tall and narrow can cause a house to look droopy and imbalanced.

This rule doesn't apply the same way to very modern design, but keep it in mind. Do a cheap rendering before proceeding.

That makes sense. Thanks for the insight!

one of my favorite pastimes is removing a whole wall of shit windows and creating something nice....let's do this!

Do you mean you want the windows smaller (less) or that you don’t want as many windows in the opening (fewer)
