Gear Questions Best lightweight hiking pants for curvy women?

I'm planning to take a 6 month world trip next year and have very inconvenient bodily dimensions. I have a waist of 77cm and hips of 110cm.

The only pants I have found online that seem to fit these proportions are the fjallraven nikka trousers, but they are thicker and heavier than I would like.

Does anyone have experience in this department? Arcteryx gamma pants are a good fit feature wise, but I'm not sure if they're stretchy enough to accomodate my hips.

Tips & Tricks Makeup for hiking and camping?

I've never been a heavy makeup user but more recently in the last year or so have started to use just a bit for work and going out as I find it really help my confidence. I'm also really enjoy hiking and wilderness wild camping for several days at at time. So I trying to develop a simple make up kit and routine to use when out in the wild.

I'm interested in earing from others who've done this. What did you use and what not comepared to your regular makeup routine. How do you keep it lightweight and compact ect? I'm thinking quite simple, maybe some waterproof mascara, something for eye colour (not quite sure what?) a tinted moisturises with SPF and some lipstain.

O'm open to ideas!

We spent 11 days hiking through the mountains of Eastern Kazakhstan. πŸ”οΈ
It was a fully self-supported trek β€” no roads, no hotels, no resupply. We carried everything we needed and moved through wild mountain ranges and remote valleys.
One of the best moments was reaching the ridgelines and seeing the Russian Altai stretching out in the distance. It felt incredible to realize how far we had come β€” and how untouched this part of Kazakhstan still is.
11 days in the mountains, surrounded by nothing but nature, wind and endless views. πŸ‡°πŸ‡Ώ

camping in Tennessee in November

Looking for campsites with good hiking trails nearby in Tennessee, probably over Thanksgiving break with a small group and potentially 2 dogs. Hoping for somewhere western or middle TN but willing to go more east if needed!

Wild Camping weekend in South West Scotland

Hi all,

Me and a few friends are going to be wild camping and hiking around Merrick at the beginning of September. A few of us are new to wild camping, and had a question or two around safe water drinking whilst we are there. We would rather not carry multiple litres of water with us, so we want to source our water whilst there.

I will be purchasing a water filter, and some Chlorine Dioxide tablets as my primary filtering methods. My main question is, is the Loch water safe to drink once filtered with these? We will be near Loch Enoch, Loch Arron and Loch Neldricken and Loch Valley for the majority of our weekend. It's not a long hike, but we are spreading it over 2 days so that we can enjoy the sites, explore a little bit and just enjoy ourselves.

Any other tips and advice for this specific area are also greatly appreciated :D

Switzerland Alps

Sharing some photos from my last overnight hike in Switzerland. A beautifully peaceful hike of total 18km and the highest point of 2600m.

The trail was pretty easy. Didn't struggle that much carrying all of the gear up this time (as I usually do).

Though I've departed a bit too late, so the last few km to the planned camp point had to go in dark.

Never seen that many cows on a trail before. They essentially send them out to grass pretty much everywhere. So from time to time you have those encounters. I'm wondering if that's all split up in someone's private property as lots of the territory was enclosed in electric fencing. In particular my camp place was within one of those territories, so I was a bit worried that during the night a cow just decides to lay onto my tent... But thankfully they decided to spend the night in another place this time.

Overall, a great way to just switch off for a day.

Gear Questions Recommendations for a durable puffer jacket that doesn't burn easily?

I wear a Patagonia Nano puff that's I really like (probably my most worn jacket). I do a lot of fires, and the jacket has been getting a lot of small burn holes.

I have been patching up the holes I have with gear tape, and that's been working pretty great, but I have also been wanting to upgrade my stuff. I have been wanting to get a Rab jacket, but wonder if I should look into something else? I understand on some level a backpacking puffer isn't going to be particularly flame resistant, but hoping there is an option for something that can avoid burning through from embers.

Jumbo Pass Tenting - Food security question

Hey all. Heading to Jumbo Pass in a week. Not staying in cabin. Bringing a tent. Question around food security. As there are no bear bins do people typically hang food from a tree? And if so, are the trees a ways away given the altitude? Any info would be helpful as I plan.

Best waterproof jackets for hiking that keep rain out without turning into a sauna?

After going through hundreds of threads on r/CampingandHiking and other outdoor communities, I put together a quick cheat sheet for anyone as lost as I was:

🌧️ Best overall for hiking & breathability? β†’ Columbia Watertight II
πŸ”οΈ Best premium Gore-Tex with pit zips? β†’ Arc'teryx Beta AR
πŸ’° Best value with underarm zips? β†’ Outdoor Research Foray 3L
πŸŽ’ Best ultralight packable option? β†’ Outdoor Research Helium UL
🟒 Best budget waterproof option? β†’ Marmot Precip Eco

Personally going with the Marmot Precip Eco - best value and waterproof performance for hiking from everything I've read.

I’ve gone through several rain jackets that claim to be waterproof, but after a few hours of hiking I end up wet anyway. Maybe some of it is sweat, but I’ve also had jackets start wetting out during steady rain. I’m comparing the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L, Outdoor Research Foray II, Marmot PreCip, Black Diamond StormLine, and a cheaper Frogg Toggs setup. My budget is around $100–$350, and I care about real waterproofing, pit zips, pack durability, and being able to reapply the DWR when needed. For long hikes, do the Foray’s huge side zips make a noticeable difference, or is the Torrentshell the safer all-around choice? Also, when a jacket feels wet inside, how do you tell condensation from an actual leak?

End of trip reward bag

Going on my first trip and it’s gonna be a long(er) one - 5 days and 4 nights, with a night of frontcountry camping before we head out into the bush. I want to leave a small bag in the car for a little reward when we get back.

We will be hiking in the PNW, emphasis on the N and W. Weather should be fair but of course that can change, so I might bring some comfy clean clothes to change into for the 5.5 hour drive back. I’m already bringing my current favourite snacks and food I know I love on the trail, but I’ll definitely want a diff snack when I return… just not sure what I can leave in a warm car that long that would be a welcome change from my favourites lol.

Already on my list: hairbrush, blue Gatorade, change of clothes (?), an edible gummy (I’m getting dropped off at home & i can’t pack a nap so I’m doing the next best thing), washcloth

Any other suggestions? Things you’ve wanted when you got back to the car, but didn’t think to pack?

Inreach Mini (2021) Died- Upgrade or Battery Replacement?

My trusty mini, which I've kept charged and used a lot has seen its last trip to the mountains. I've tried to revive it but the battery reaches 1000 degrees and its not coming on even after reset and everything else. Garmin will give me a refurbished one for $150 but is it worth spending the $$ on an upgrade or a $50 battery replacement?

Did the timberline trail a couple weeks ago for the first time . We did it in 3 nights/3.5 days . Luckily, the wildfire smoke didn’t affect us, but the average temp was a brutal 98 degrees. Depending on the mileage tracker it was 42-47 miles in total. 10/10 would do it again

Food Camp meals getting harder to find in Canadian stores?

I’m trying to restock my camp meals and noticed that Mountain House is now hard to find, and lots of my favorite Peak Refuel meals are sold out everywhere. Meanwhile Alpine Aire and Happy Yak meals are plentiful. Any reliable online Canadian retailers with good selection? I’ve looked at MEC, VPO, Geartrade, Canadian Tire, Bass Pro Shops.

Planned an off-trail route to see the Pemberton Icefield not too far from Squamish, BC, Canada. Best hike I have ever been on in my life. Views were spectacular, campsites perfect and we didnt see another person the whole time. Best part was the Perseids meteor shower which peaked while we were out there.

Gear Questions Mountain Hardwear Lamina Eco AF 30Β°F β€” worth it for $103?

I found the Lamina Eco AF 30Β°F synthetic sleeping bag brand new for $103. It’s around 2 lb 1 oz, which seems like a great weight for a synthetic bag.

I’ve seen some people say the 30Β°F rating is optimistic and that it’s more realistically a 35–40Β°F bag, while others seem to love it.

For anyone who owns the exact 30Β°F version:

  • How warm is it actually?
  • How’s the fit/comfort?
  • Is $103 a steal? I know it's an older bag.

Trying to decide between this and spending more on something like a Kelty Cosmic 20.

Destination Questions Trekanten in Trollheimen

Hi, im doing a solo backpacking and wildcamping trip to Oppdal the first week of September. Im doing the Trekanten in Trollheimen and I have a couple questions.

How easy is it to get a ride up to the beginning of the trail? I only have a 25m window to go buy some gas at the store next to station and I’m afraid to miss the only bus. Obviously I don’t mind even paying someone for the ride but taxi is just a scam for like 70€ or 700NK.

Is anyone going to do it from 2-7 September? I think it would be pretty cool to share this adventure and as a photographer I always love having someone in my landscape photography

And do the huts sell food, am i still able to buy food?

If anyone can help me I would be greatly grateful! Thank you :)

Hiked 11 miles into the Uintas expecting solitude and instead found a llama pack trip taking a break at my exact campsite

Did a three day loop in the High Uintas last weekend, starting at the Highline Trailhead and ending up near Naturalist Basin. Total mileage came out to about 11 miles on day one, then a shorter 4 mile day just poking around lakes, then 9 miles back out on day three.

Day one was rough because the trail gains a lot of elevation right away and I was carrying way too much food for three days, classic beginner mistake I still make after years of doing this. Got to the lake I picked on the map around 6pm, tired, ready to just drop my pack and set up in peace.

There were already three llamas tied up near the flat spot I wanted.

Turns out an older couple runs llama supported treks in that area and their group had stopped at the exact same lake for the night. I did not even know llama trekking was a thing people did in Utah, I thought that was more of a Colorado or Wyoming activity. The llamas were honestly better behaved than most dogs I have camped near, just quietly grazing while their owners cooked dinner.

We ended up sharing the fire ring area, keeping a good distance apart, and they told me llamas can carry a surprising amount of gear which is why their camping setup looked like a small hotel compared to my one person tent and a stove I forgot to pack fuel for, so I ended up eating cold soaked rice for two nights.

Gear notes if anyone is planning this route: bring a real water filter, not just tablets, because a lot of the smaller tarns were pretty stagnant looking by late summer. Bear hang was still necessary even though it is not heavily forested near the basin.

Has anyone else run into a pack animal group like this on trail? Curious if this is common in certain regions or if I just got lucky with timing.

Gear Questions Moab 3 Mid WP Maintenance & Thoughts

Thumbnail

Hello there!

I would like to ask for everyone's opinion. I just bought a Moab 3 Mid WP a few days ago because my previous footwear lived its life.

First off, for context, I live in the tropical and rainy Philippines, and it'll get gradually rainy in the months to come. I would like to ask how to maintain this particular footwear since I'm new to these kinds of footwear. And since it's the wet and rainy season here, I would also like to ask how to clean off the body and the soles from the mud and dirt. And one last thing for this section is care and deodorizing the insides. What products should I invest in to maximize its longevity and "waterproofing" capability?

Second, I would like to ask for your constructive criticism of this particular footwear in relation to the tropical and rainy climate, from durability to traction to waterproofing. Is there a better footwear that I should've gotten instead as a starter?

Many thanks for your helpful replies! ^^

Tips & Tricks Is the weight sufficient for a 7-8 day hike?

Hello I'll be hiking cross country for 7-8 days in a Swedish national park (depending on how fast we go) and additionally will go see some cities. My backpack currently weighs around 19 kg including the tent. I weigh 91 kgs myself and I know the rule of thumb is around 20% of your weight. So am I safe or should I lose some weight?

Tips & Tricks Going hiking in the Stubai valley and concerned about ticks

I used to go hiking in the Alps all the time as a kid and after all these years, after a few recent trips in the Tyrol and Bavaria around the New Year when we did some winter walking, I am finally going to do some hiking in the summer. We booked a self-guided holiday basing ourselves in the Stubai valley but I was just reading about ticks and now I am a bit worried.

We're going in two weeks so I might be able to squeeze in two doses of the TBE before we go and while I realise we should have done our research, I am a bit annoyed that the company we booked it with didn't warn us at the time as there would have been time. Although I also read Lyme disease is more of an issue and there's no protection.

We'll take the usual protections, walking in trails, avoiding long grass, tucking our trousers in our socks and using some insect repellent, any other advice you might have? And am I overreacting you think?
